[0:01] [Music] hi my name is Luther Overholt I'm the [0:06] city of Edina forrester thank you for taking the time to help us eradicate [0:10] buckthorn buckthorn is a non-native invasive shrub that was brought over [0:14] from England and the 1800s to be used as a hedge rope it competes with native [0:19] plants and vegetation for nutrients light and water so how do you identify [0:23] buckthorn the leaves are egg-shaped pointed at the tip smooth dark glossy [0:29] and finally toothed buckthorn leaves are the first to come [0:33] out in the spring and the last to turn in the fall the female plants have [0:37] blackberries on them on smaller plants the bark is smooth with white dots on it [0:43] all of the plants do have thorns on them like the name implies [0:48] the tree will have brown bark with elongated silvery corky projections a [0:54] cut branch will expose yellow SAP wood and an orange heartwood [0:59] the fruit on buckthorn is round berry light clusters of black Porter and fruit [1:04] the fruit ripens in August and September here are some removal strategies using [1:11] the weed wrench we make available to you for removal place the jaws at the base [1:15] of the plant and pull back using a saw or loppers cut the buck zone [1:22] at the base and spray with a roundup when first starting to remove buckthorn [1:26] clear around the cherries and remove the female trees with berries to dispose of [1:32] the buckthorn properly please stack buckthorns on the curb with stumps [1:37] facing the same direction for easier pickup if you decide to remove buckthorn [1:41] on your property the city offers free buckthorn disposal the last two weekends [1:46] of October thank you for volunteering to help improve Edina parks and green [1:50] spaces [Music] [1:58] you
