[5:21] Okay. We are going [5:25] to [5:30] reconvene to open session at 7:31. [5:35] We have our quorum here. [5:38] Oh, [5:40] man, I forgot everything that I'm supposed to report. [5:44] There's no action. [5:44] There's no action to report taken in closed session. [5:48] So let's stand [5:50] for the pledge. [5:53] Ready. Salute. I pledge allegiance to the flag of [5:57] the United States of America and to the Republic for which it [6:01] stands, one nation under God, indivisible, [6:05] with liberty and justice for all. [6:11] Okay. [6:12] I have to grab my agenda. [6:13] Yeah. [6:18] Okay, our board norms. [6:25] We'll start and end meetings on time as published in the agendas. [6:28] We will prepare for meetings by researching topics and asking questions in advance. [6:32] We will trust the expertise of district employees in implementing the mission and [6:35] board policy. We will treat everyone in a respectful and fair manner and be [6:39] open-minded to all points of view. [6:41] We will create an environment where communication is accessible and audible for [6:45] all. We will collectively support the authority of the board as a whole, not as [6:48] individuals, and we will affirm the voices of the public while maintaining [6:52] the structure under the Brown Act. [6:55] Okay, this is to notify to the audience that open [6:59] session will be audio taped and recorded. [7:03] Do we have any public comment on non-agenda and open session items? [7:07] Nope. [7:07] We do not. [7:08] No comments. [7:11] We are going to go proceed with our reports, and we will start with [7:15] our student trustee. [7:17] Hello, everyone. I will start by apologizing. [7:20] I'm going to have to leave a little bit early after reports because- [7:23] Oh, okay [7:24] ... I have senior summaries tomorrow, and- [7:26] Woo [7:26] ... I have Link Crew and I need to get sleep- ... to be able to function. [7:30] That's okay. [7:31] But I'm very excited for the new school year. [7:33] Again, a new board Link Crew is tomorrow. [7:35] We're going to do our annual freshman orientation. [7:38] I've heard very good things about this group of freshmen, so I'm excited to work [7:41] with them. And just excited in general [7:45] for our leadership crew, [7:49] Link Crew, and also just ASD in general. [7:51] I think we're a really good group this year, and we're really excited. [7:53] We're really excited to work with the principal. [7:56] I've gotten to meet him a couple times, and he is a really nice guy. [7:59] Okay. [8:00] I keep telling people that, and it's true. [8:03] And so yeah, I'm just very excited and very hopeful that I'll have a great [8:06] senior year and be able to represent my constituents. [8:11] Awesome. Thank you. We'll go ahead and start [8:15] with Trustee [8:17] O'Malley Solis. What? [8:20] There's no union? [8:21] No union. [8:22] Oh. [8:23] Seeing that there are no union representatives here, we will start with our board [8:26] trustees, continuing with Trustee O'Malley Solis. [8:30] Okay. [8:31] I had the opportunity last night to participate [8:35] by volunteering in the ice cream social, welcoming back the [8:39] ninth graders with a couple of fellow Rotarians. [8:41] That was fun to [8:43] see the energy on campus. And as I was walking out, I [8:47] got to see, I believe, a student-led tour, [8:53] showing the ninth graders around, and that was cool to see as well. [8:57] And that's it. That's my report. [9:01] Thank you. [9:02] Trustee [9:04] Shaffer? [9:05] Yeah, I just want to wish all the incoming students a really good start [9:09] to the year. I'm super excited and looking forward to all [9:13] the things that this year brings. So learning principals, I'm really excited to [9:17] get to know you both and [9:19] welcome. [9:22] Okay. Trustee Powers? [9:24] Yeah. Welcome back to students tomorrow. That's very exciting. [9:28] And welcome to our new principals. [9:30] And I don't think I've done anything in the last month board [9:34] related. [9:36] But I'm looking forward to the auction [9:39] next month [9:41] for our new principals. There is the Community [9:45] Schools Foundation- [9:47] Barn party [9:49] ... barn party. [9:49] Barn party. [9:50] Where you drink too much wine, and then you buy things for [9:53] the children. [9:55] For the children. [9:55] For the children. [9:56] Not for yourself. [9:56] You drink too much for the children, and then you buy things. [9:59] You're right. [10:00] And then the only other thing that I think I have to say is, [10:04] it is election season. No one ran, [10:08] guys, so we have two empty seats [10:12] coming up on the board. And that will be [10:16] for trustees' areas where Kristen is and where Anitra [10:20] is. And so just sort of a solicitation to [10:24] anyone who's out there who, for appointing, [10:28] we need people from those two trustee areas. [10:30] And I am hopeful that we will have strong candidates because we need [10:34] people who really care about our district. [10:38] Awesome. [10:39] Thank you. [10:41] Toaster. [10:42] Trustee Clayton. [10:46] Yeah. I echo everyone's welcome. [10:50] Had a great summer that went by far too quickly [10:53] and have no additional reports. [10:56] Okay. Thank you. [10:57] And my report just includes a big welcome back to our staff, our scholars, and [11:01] our families. Very exciting at San Juan [11:05] School. As I pass the school every [11:09] morning as I go on my way to work, it's just exciting. [11:13] I was a little [11:15] sad about the Padre coverage, but that's because I'm [11:19] class of '85. [11:23] But [11:25] we're moving forward, and [11:26] I'm very confused by [11:30] sometimes hearing from the community about, [11:34] "What happened? Where-- I've just noticed-- What?" It's just a [11:38] confusion. Must pay attention. Anyway, so, just to [11:41] piggyback also on Trustee Powers, that we are looking for [11:46] some community members to fill our seats. [11:49] And [11:51] we all work, and we don't have extra time to serve [11:55] either, but this is something that is very doable. [11:58] Guilty. [11:59] And you have a good... [12:02] Our fellow trustees will help anyone who's interested in answering any [12:06] questions, [12:08] all of that. So nothing else to report. [12:12] And now we'll move to our superintendents. [12:15] Okay. [12:17] Don't have yet any reports on board committees. [12:21] Those won't start till later this month. [12:25] I want to welcome our two new principals. [12:28] Shamoon's birthday is today. [12:29] Yay. [12:29] I almost feel like we should sing happy birthday. [12:33] Happy birthday. [12:34] And he's had a great start to the year. [12:37] He's [12:39] met probably more people in a couple of [12:42] weeks than I did in the first three months. [12:45] So he's out there, he's [12:48] connecting with people, [12:50] even rearranging the office. [12:55] Shamoon, any words? [12:57] Yes. [12:59] I should- [12:59] Just breathe. [13:01] I'll make it relatively brief. It is my birthday after all. [13:05] But I just want to say really thank you so much for welcoming me into [13:09] this family in a very short amount of time. [13:11] I've only been here since July 1st. [13:15] It feels like I'm already a part of something really, really special. [13:21] On my birthday today, so many people approached me wishing me well, [13:25] and I had a chance to even meet with some of the link crew kids today, and [13:29] I could feel the anticipation for the school year. [13:32] And I'm extremely excited to be a part of this journey with all of you. [13:35] So thank you for also giving me the chance to be a part of this. [13:38] Appreciate it. On behalf of the entire Ebrahimi family, you have no idea [13:43] how crazy this is, but this is amazing. [13:46] Well, the question we really want to ask, though, is do you have curtains- [13:48] Yeah [13:49] ... in your office? Because it's very important this time. [13:51] Yes. It's on the way. [13:52] Okay, good. [13:54] Yes. I have the remotes. [13:55] Okay. [13:55] The sheer curtains first, but the curtains are on the way. [13:58] Okay. All right. That's what I need. [14:00] Shamoon, can I ask you just to come up here and just stand here, and then we'll [14:02] bring Miss Edith up here, so if anyone goes back to view our board meetings, they [14:06] know who we're talking about. [14:06] Sure. Yes. [14:07] Yeah. [14:08] Hello. Hello again. Shamoon Ebrahimi, straight out of the Chicago [14:12] land area, now living in the San Juan Batista area [14:16] in Morgan Hill, and happy to be the principal at Anzar High [14:20] School. Thank you so much. [14:22] You're welcome. [14:22] Thanks for coming. [14:23] Thank you. [14:24] Happy birthday. [14:25] Thank you so much. [14:26] And Garcia. Who again, [14:30] has just fit like hands in a glove into the [14:34] position at Romus, and more meets and greets and [14:37] popsicles and- [14:40] ... whatever. [14:41] We ran out of popsicles today. [14:43] Oh. [14:43] So that was amazing. [14:45] Gave away over 100 popsicles, and everyone's so anxious [14:49] to see their class lists, and so we're very excited. [14:52] And we've been getting the campus ready, and so ready for tomorrow. [14:57] Yay. [14:57] Thank you for having me. [14:59] Yay. Welcome. [14:59] Welcome. [15:06] So other things I might mention, we had an excellent new teacher [15:10] academy. Very excited about our incoming class of new hires. [15:14] Javon organized us all to do presentations, and I think we [15:18] feel really good about everybody that's coming on board, so that's [15:22] exciting. [15:24] Following that, I don't know, this is a tough time of the year for you, [15:28] Javon. She put together, again, with help from various team [15:32] members, two days of professional development that [15:36] are even more targeted and relevant to job-alike [15:39] positions than ever before. And I've heard so many positive [15:43] comments in the past couple of days about that. [15:46] So thank you, Javon, for all those efforts. [15:50] Many of us, and Anisa, you were there too, attended [15:55] a county event [15:57] a while ago on AI. [15:59] Oh, forgot. [16:00] You forgot? [16:02] I don't think. [16:03] Which I actually thought was pretty thought-provoking. [16:06] Yeah. [16:07] So we'll bring some of that to our AI task force. [16:11] Again, I think some of [16:15] us, I'm looking around to see who went. The Algebra Academy. [16:19] Shamoon and Edith and I and Javon [16:23] attended [16:25] the Algebra Academy that's supported by Granite Rock. [16:28] We had a number of our students either participate [16:32] or be there as alumni and mentors, so that was pretty exciting. [16:36] Really appreciate the work that one of our parents, Christy Sessions, [16:40] does in organizing that event. [16:43] So that was exciting. And then the last thing... [16:46] Oh, Stuff the Bus. [16:48] Mm-hmm. [16:50] Many of us attended the event to put together [16:53] backpacks for kiddos. [16:56] And they need to be distributed, the extra ones that we brought back, [17:01] when we find space to store them. But we had pretty good turnout, and [17:05] it's always heartwarming to see [17:07] the [17:10] support to come out and fill the backpacks with supplies, and also the funding to [17:15] provide those for families that need those. [17:18] And the last thing I wanted to say is just the San Juan construction. [17:23] This is a beautiful school. [17:26] Everybody who [17:30] has the pleasure, and you soon will, of walking through classrooms, I mean, [17:34] it's sort of [17:35] jaw-dropping gorgeous. We're still [17:40] tying up some loose ends, and [17:42] teachers have to figure out, do I need another bookshelf or this or that, but it's [17:46] going to be wonderful for the kids. [17:48] And I'm anxious tomorrow to get there early and just see the [17:52] reaction of most of the students, because I think they'll just be amazed. [17:56] They're putting in landscaping, putting in mulch around plants. [18:00] So a lot of this work is going to continue for a little while here, and then, [18:04] of course, we go into phase two, which is building the MPR [18:08] and the library, preschool, kitchen, et cetera. [18:12] But yeah. So a lot of us have been daily [18:16] going over there and just keeping it up. [18:20] So yeah, it's been a busy period of time, President. [18:26] Thank you. [18:29] Okay. We are going- [18:31] Look at that. [18:33] Oh, okay. [18:34] All right. Well, we'll let Sam in. It's time now. [18:37] Mighty senior. Have fun [18:39] tomorrow. [18:46] Okay, we are looking for a motion to approve consent [18:50] agenda. [18:50] I'll move to approve the consent agenda. [18:52] Thank you, Trustee. [18:53] Second. [18:53] Thank you, Trustee Powers. All in favor? [18:56] Aye. [18:56] Any opposed? [19:01] Okay. Information item. Our first is the launch of the [19:04] district website. [19:07] Okay. District website. [19:09] Yes, sir. [19:12] It's like weeks. Miranda goes, "Closer, closer." [19:15] I go... [19:18] Let's get... [19:20] Squeeze on. [19:20] Oh. [19:29] So I don't know, everyone, did you get them? [19:32] Yep. [19:34] So, [19:35] this is just while I'm talking. We are live [19:39] finally now on Google and Apple. Apple just [19:43] got approved today. So these are the QR codes to download the app. [19:48] So basically, this is a new digital home for Roma San [19:52] Juan, and I'm really excited to formally introduce this. [19:55] I know the website's been out for several months. [19:58] But this now, pretty much this past two weeks, [20:02] everything is tied together now. [20:05] So it's more than a new redesigned website. [20:07] It's a digital home for the entire community. [20:11] Our goal was to improve our families, students, and the community members [20:15] find information and stay connected. You can go to the next one. [20:20] Oh, it's right here. I have it, and I have a timer. I like that. [20:24] So as you know, this was built for our community. [20:27] This project began over a year ago with a committee. [20:30] We did a lot of discussions. We looked at a lot of platforms. [20:34] The goal was to improve the district-wide communication. [20:39] We listened to what families and schools needed, and we reorganized [20:43] and updated a lot of the information and content, [20:47] so it would be easier to find and just more clear. [20:51] And as everybody knows, a website is always a work in progress, and [20:55] this will be updated all the time. [20:58] I always tell people, too, if the navigation makes [21:02] sense to me- ... in my head. So I always tell people if for some reason [21:06] you're having a problem finding something or whatever, just let me know and we can [21:10] rearrange things really easily on the menus. [21:14] So basically, each site has their own identity, [21:18] but they all look very similar, and so they have their own colors [21:22] and everything else, but the layouts are similar, [21:27] to keep everything consistent. So families will find familiar [21:31] search tools, quick links, calendars, and directories on [21:35] every website with allowing them to have their personality as [21:38] well. [21:40] And this is really helpful too for people who have more than one kid [21:44] or more than one child at different schools. [21:46] It helps the organization. [21:51] So we did design this with families in mind. [21:53] This is the parent/guardian resources page with easy icons, [21:57] and so they can find each area. These are the [22:01] areas that people go to the most that we're finding. [22:04] So here they can quickly access enrollment, data confirmation, [22:08] calendars, transportation, meals, [22:12] ELOP, athletics, and the bullying reporting. [22:15] And there's clear labels, short descriptions, so they know what they're going to [22:19] find. And we're hoping it reduces the number of clicks, and [22:23] people have to go searching through all different menu items to find things. [22:30] So this just shows here, [22:32] it actually translates on the fly. [22:35] So on the bottom right-hand corner, there's a [22:38] US flag, and you click it, and you can pick the flag of Mexico to go [22:42] to Spanish. And it does [22:45] translate everything. We've really made a point to not have [22:49] PDFs on the website because those do not translate. [22:53] So you'll find the parent notices and everything. [22:56] They're all individual posts. And so each post will [23:00] translate. So, it was a lot of work in the beginning to get each page, [23:04] 100-page parent notifications into posts. [23:08] But now that it's up, it's really easy to maintain. [23:13] And this is just to show we finally have everything together. [23:16] You should have gotten some emails this week. [23:18] We're using Messenger XR now instead of [23:21] ParentSquare. So we're able to target all those messages [23:25] similar to ParentSquare by school, parents, staff, [23:29] and it does automatically translate the message based on their language in Aeries. [23:34] All the data is brought in from Aeries on a nightly basis, [23:38] and is refreshed every night. And so all parent emails and [23:42] staff emails, everything like that. [23:44] What's nice for me is it actually updates our staff directory as well. [23:48] That didn't happen with the old system. [23:50] And so I do have to add pictures, but the staff directories are updated on the fly. [23:55] Also here, which it shows you are the, is the mobile app. [23:59] So that's the homepage in the middle that you'll see on the mobile app, and on the [24:02] right is a page where you can select exactly what schools you want [24:06] to follow. You don't have to follow every school. You can if you want. [24:10] And as you select the schools, the calendars, [24:14] it's based on the Google Calendar that the schools keep updated. [24:18] And so you'll only see the calendar for that school [24:21] And you can pick if you want to see the athletics calendar or the events calendar. [24:24] Most schools have two calendars. [24:27] And you can also select if you want to see the district calendar as well. [24:31] Mm-hmm. [24:32] And so that is kind of cool because it's reactive to whatever [24:36] you need. [24:38] And I wanted to thank Cesar. [24:41] He helped out with these apps and getting all of the back end ready. [24:45] It was a lot of work, especially with Apple. [24:47] They have a lot of testing and things that they do on their side. [24:52] And Jackie and Sam have been integral in getting Messenger and [24:56] Composer, which is the website's [24:59] platform integrated with Aeries. [25:01] That's been a really long project for them and getting all the mapping and [25:05] everything done correctly, and they've done a really great job with [25:08] that. [25:10] So anyway, that's it. That's our digital home. We're really excited. [25:14] And if you have any questions about it? [25:19] Any questions from the board? [25:21] Yeah. I successfully- [25:22] Yeah [25:22] ... downloaded it. [25:23] Me too. [25:24] Yeah. Well, we did the... I downloaded it. [25:26] Yeah. [25:26] And it was really nice to be able to see. [25:28] I really appreciate the calendars because I think that's always driven me crazy, is [25:31] that I don't know when back to school night is, for example, and it's right there. [25:35] Yeah. [25:35] It's on there. So that's- [25:36] And they're color-coded on the main website, like all of the schools, but they're [25:40] all color-coded. And then there's a legend at the bottom of the [25:44] calendar. So basically it all feeds from Google. [25:47] Yeah. [25:47] So, yes. [25:48] Oh. Thank you. Thank you, Cesar. [25:51] Yes. [25:53] Okay. Our next- [25:55] Good job, Cesar [25:55] ... is the 45-day revised budget. [25:58] So I didn't put together a presentation for it. [26:01] It's pretty much our adopted budget and adding [26:06] the Students of Color Professional Development Block Grant. [26:09] It's about 883 grand. [26:11] Adding the remaining Learning Recovery and Emergency Block Grants. [26:15] I think those are the two main points. [26:18] So there's not much. [26:20] We have no one-time funds. [26:25] Where do we find those? You just read out the... [26:29] Are there line items on it? [26:30] Oh, that's not- [26:31] This is not- [26:32] That's not the- [26:33] This is Barb's favorite spreadsheet. [26:34] Yeah, that's- [26:35] Oh. [26:35] Just wanted him to mention this. [26:36] Okay. [26:37] The revised budget's on the- [26:40] In here [26:40] ... clickable on the agenda. [26:42] Okay. Sorry. [26:43] It's two PDFs. One for unrestricted general funds- [26:47] Unrestricted. Okay. Thank you [26:49] It looked like just all the grants. Right? [26:52] Yeah. There's two one-time funds. [26:55] One of them has impacts to the unrestricted general fund [26:59] because it gives us more time to spend down Learning [27:03] Recovery and Emergency Block Grant, so we don't have to make a transfer from [27:06] unrestricted to restricted this year. [27:10] So [27:11] it buys a little bit of time. [27:13] Thank you. [27:14] Any questions for David? [27:17] Thank you, David. [27:18] Thank you. [27:20] Moving on to our action items. Action item A, the [27:24] agreement College and Career Access Pathways Partnerships. [27:28] This is the second College and Career Access Pathway Partnership [27:32] agreement that we have had with Hartnell College. [27:35] As you know, in our district, we are partnered with Gavilan, so we have to get [27:38] special permission to partner with Hartnell. [27:41] And I'd like to mention that we have expanded the courses that we [27:45] are planning to offer in this agreement. [27:48] Along with mechatronics, there is a course called Construction Management and [27:51] Architecture, and this is a course that will follow our CTE pathways [27:55] in a really nice sequence for our students. [27:58] This is also a course that David Founds, our CTE instructor [28:02] here at our school, can teach as dual enrollment on our [28:06] campus. So our plan is to move forward with getting all of [28:10] that [28:12] process in place so that he can teach that course when we have students that are [28:16] ready to fill that course, which will be, I hope, by next year. [28:19] So that's really exciting. We've also added three new courses, Ag [28:23] Business, Ag Plant Science, and Ag Production. [28:26] These are three courses that our students, through our California [28:30] Colleges Guidance Initiative assessments, have told us that they're very [28:34] interested in some of these Ag courses. [28:37] They're not offered at Gavilan, so we're allowed to offer them at Hartnell. [28:40] In the past, we have had students transported to the Hartnell campus [28:45] via van, so it's a small cohort of students that have been able to take [28:49] courses there, and so we're trying to figure out which students, which [28:53] courses, and the timing for that as we move forward with this agreement. [28:58] Thank you so much. [28:59] Any questions for this? And it's a multi-year, so we can [29:03] amend and add classes as we see fit. [29:05] I'm just really excited to see how we've been expanding the career [29:09] pathway, and just, it's so wonderful. [29:12] Not all kids are necessarily gonna- [29:15] Do the traditional [29:16] ... do a four-year university, and that's okay. [29:18] And I think that having these options is so great, and I love having the dual [29:21] enrollment. I just really appreciate all the efforts that you put in on this, [29:25] Javon. [29:26] Thank you. [29:28] The one thing I'll add is, I was looking at the enrollments for [29:32] certain courses at the high school, and he has five [29:36] courses that are pretty full. [29:38] Yeah. [29:39] Up from when he started, maybe two. [29:42] Mm-hmm. [29:43] And so I talked with him today and he was like, "Yeah, you've got me now." [29:48] I'm not leaving. [29:49] Nice. [29:50] And he is really a kid that, [29:52] David Founds- [29:54] Great teacher [29:54] ... is doing a great job. [29:55] That's great to hear. Well, I'm happy to make a motion to approve this. [29:58] Yeah, I'll second. [29:59] Thank you, Jamie. All in favor? [30:02] Aye. [30:02] Any opposed? Motion carries. Thank you, Javon. [30:07] The next is the job description for the Anzar High School [30:10] clerk. [30:12] So what we're doing here, this is a new job description. [30:15] It's actually the office clerk and the library clerk. [30:18] What we did, if you remember previously, is we had a [30:22] four-hour office clerk position, which is in the front office here, and a [30:26] four-hour library clerk position. [30:29] And Mrs. Large had those both. So it was an eight-hour job. [30:34] What we were finding is the hours in the library are very [30:38] variable depending on when Mrs. Beske needs [30:41] support. It's dependent on her prep. [30:44] And so by combining these two positions, it gives us a lot more [30:48] flexibility. And then we left it at the longer day, the [30:52] 222-day calendar that a clerk is at. [30:54] So as school is starting and ending, when the library [30:58] position is not needed, that person can help focus in the office [31:02] and get things ready for the school year or help close things down, and [31:06] they have a full day to do that rather than just four hours. [31:10] And we did work through with the ASJFCE [31:14] and worked this out with them as well. [31:18] Did you get any pushback with this? [31:22] Well, it was more discussing equity [31:25] among the sites, but part of the issue is if you have half the [31:29] students here that they do at Aromas with a full-time clerk. [31:33] And part of it too is the student need here for a [31:37] clerk. They're not running in needing Band-Aids and [31:40] ice packs and things like that. So there wasn't as much of a [31:44] need for a full-time clerk in this position. [31:48] Thank you. Any questions? I'll make a motion to approve. Thank you. [31:52] Trustee Chalmers. Thank you. Trust- [31:54] Jesse [31:56] ... Jesse. All in favor? [31:56] Aye. [31:57] Opposed? Motion carries. Thank you. [32:00] Next item. [32:00] And the next one is food service. [32:02] So food service provider is a six-hour position, and [32:06] we are asking to have it moved to a seven-hour position. [32:10] This is the person who is in the cafeteria. [32:14] They're in charge of their area, and then they have a cafeteria assistant who's [32:17] five hours below them. [32:20] With the San Juan construction and the kitchen being here now, [32:24] they need additional time, but we're also offering an earlier breakfast here [32:28] now at Anzar, so that's causing more time. [32:32] And then also with construction at San Juan, we've had to [32:35] change the recess schedules a little bit. [32:38] And so how long they're serving lunch, we're trying to have the middle [32:42] school students go a little later, not all at the same [32:45] time because there's limited room and things like that. [32:48] And so we did work with the union again on this. They were fine with it. [32:52] The employees are fine. And we understand that once we change this to seven hours, [32:56] it will stay seven hours. [33:00] Any questions, Bran? [33:02] Looking for a motion. I'll move to approve. Thank you, Trustee Jenny. [33:06] Second. Jesse. Thank you, Jesse. All in favor? [33:09] Aye. [33:09] Any opposed? Motion carries. Thank you. [33:13] Thank you. [33:15] Next on the agenda is the second reading, the mobile [33:18] communication devices. [33:20] So I wanted to just point out the small differences [33:24] between this version and the one that you saw at your first reading. [33:29] As you requested under definitions, [33:33] we added the phrase, "includes but is not limited to." I think [33:36] that was a suggestion that Casey brought up. [33:40] And that whole list of cell phones, smartphones, [33:44] smartwatches, smart glasses, et cetera, that was in the original [33:48] policy. [33:50] It's interesting because we're watching all the area school [33:54] districts [33:55] go through this same process and put out policy [33:59] revisions and procedures. [34:03] I was looking at the hay balers, for example, and one of [34:06] their communication pieces talked about devices. [34:11] Any device that connects communicates with signals. [34:14] And that's really what all of these are. [34:17] And so the only other change under instructional [34:21] time, there were [34:24] four items there originally. We had an [34:28] internal meeting with our administrators to talk through these, [34:33] particularly our new principals and our high school [34:37] principal. And it was decided that because [34:41] at the high school it operates a little bit differently than K-8, and [34:45] a high school student goes into a class, they deposit their [34:49] cell phone into a [34:53] shoe tree thing- [34:54] Hotel [34:55] ... hotel for their phone. And then when class is over, they pick it up and they [34:59] go to the next one. So for us to say and/or student [35:03] resource or break times, [35:05] that would fly in the face of that, right? [35:08] Because they're picking it up while they're moving to their class and they've been [35:11] using it at break or recess. And we've not [35:15] had any problems with it. So we're going to leave [35:19] the current practice at the high school the same. [35:22] And to be consistent with the policy, we simply, the [35:25] period after wellness centers and deleted and/or [35:30] for student recess or break times. [35:34] At San Juan School, [35:38] in the past, I think we probably mentioned the [35:42] students [35:43] were asked to keep their cell phones in their backpacks, and [35:47] many of the backpacks were hanging outside on hooks. [35:50] And so they weren't very secure that way. [35:52] And we had some students who were violating that [35:56] policy. So instead what we're doing is we purchased for them, [36:00] because if you've seen the layout now, the L shape of the classrooms is quite a [36:04] ways away from the admin center itself. [36:08] We have these, which many school districts are getting, we have a secure [36:12] lock box kind of thing where a cell phone can be deposited, and [36:15] a teacher can pick it up if there's an emergency, can pick it up and take it [36:19] with or open it, whatever. So they're going to remain in the [36:23] classroom with the students. We're going to try those and see how [36:27] they work. If they work, now at Aromas, they have a [36:31] basket system that they use that's worked fine [36:35] for ... several years, but I think they'd like to [36:38] probably move to that same system too. [36:40] We just want to see if this device works well, and then we'll bring that [36:44] to a vote. So the only change in the wording [36:48] is what you asked Casey to add, and then [36:51] deleting that last phrase. Otherwise, both [36:55] policies are as [36:57] the first reading. And we've [36:59] communicated this with information to parents, [37:03] we've communicated it to all of our teachers. [37:07] I think probably we'll generate an FAQ document, [37:11] which many districts are supplementing with, but we have the [37:14] information on our website, and we really had one or two questions. [37:19] We are asking [37:21] if a parent wants their kid to have the cell phone at school, to [37:25] fill out a registration form to either [37:29] say, "No, they're not bringing a cell phone," or "Yes, they are." Because in the [37:33] past, we haven't known, for example, if the cell phone that they bring is actually [37:36] one the parent knows that they have. [37:39] So we want to make sure that [37:41] this is a cell phone that the parent wants the kid to have, that they didn't get it [37:45] from their boyfriend or girlfriend or someone else, and that it is [37:49] actually going to be secured by us as their own cell phone. [37:53] So parents are [37:55] either saying, "No, they're not bringing anything," or "Yes, they are, and here's [37:59] the cell phone number." [38:02] And we're getting a lot of people stepping up and filling that out. [38:09] Any questions? [38:11] Can I make a motion to approve both [38:14] of the policies at once? [38:18] Is there anything in that one? [38:20] No, the other one, there's no change in them. [38:21] Okay. I'm going to make a motion to approve both policies. [38:25] Okay, second. [38:26] Thank you. All in favor? [38:28] Aye. [38:28] Opposed? [38:30] This is second, Jesse? [38:31] Yes. [38:36] Okay. [38:36] Okay. We are now in our [38:39] recommendation for future meetings. [38:46] Nothing right now. [38:49] Well, oh, at a future meeting, we're going to need to [38:53] do an approval of [38:55] doing interviews and seating [38:59] board trustees. [39:00] Okay. We'll bring you some information about that process. [39:03] So yeah. And getting it out and putting it- [39:06] Yeah [39:07] ... to the communities in our district. [39:09] Thank you. [39:10] Okay. [39:13] Others? [39:16] Okay. Upcoming meeting dates. Our next regular board meeting is [39:20] September 9th. [39:21] Do we have a-- We have a hold on September 2nd, [39:25] but we don't have a confirmation for that yet. [39:32] 6:00, here at Anzar High School. Our [39:36] Facilities Committee meeting is August 26th at 4:30 at the [39:40] district office studio. [39:43] And feedback by Trustee O'Malley Solis. [39:47] It was nice to have our two new principals here tonight, [39:51] thank [39:52] you for inviting them, and [39:54] thank you to Truman for being down for thank yous. [40:00] I was excited about getting [40:04] to hear about the kids' experience, that [40:07] the kids are about to experience being parts of the San Juan school, and I'm [40:11] interested in hearing about how it goes. [40:15] I really liked the new website, and I like the [40:19] fact that there's [40:21] immediate translation right there, as well as [40:24] seeing Toaster as the star of the show at San Juan school on that [40:28] tile. [40:31] I really liked hearing about the new curriculum offered [40:35] through Parkdale College. The construction management architecture [40:39] class in particular is near and dear to my heart, because that's my [40:43] field. [40:44] So it's nice to see the Del Chino children having access to [40:48] that before they're doing their graduate work. [40:54] And then also the business science and ag production class. [40:59] That's it. Great work. Excited for the new year. [41:03] Thank you. [41:05] Okay. Is there any public comment on our closed session [41:09] items? [41:10] No public comments on that. [41:11] Public comment. Okay, we are going to adjourn to closed session at [41:15] 8:06. [41:16] I think I'd like- [41:17] Can we take a- [41:19] Like to mention what we're going to discuss. [41:20] Oh, yes. We are going to be discussing the superintendent [41:24] goals and the conference with labor [41:26] negotiators. [41:28] I move to adjourn us to closed session. [41:31] Thank you. 8:07. Are we all- [41:34] Aye [41:35] ... in favor? Okay. [41:36] Great. We're taking a break. [41:37] We're going to take a- [1:08:25] We're through. [1:08:25] Standing. Pamela. We're done. You're ready now. Okay. [1:08:29] And we are reconvening to open session [1:08:33] at 8:34. There is no action to request. [1:08:37] Yes, yes there was. Oh, yes. I'm sorry. There was. [1:08:41] We are looking for a motion. No. Yes. [1:08:44] You're reporting out on what we've approved in there. [1:08:47] We approved in, during closed session, we approved [1:08:51] the superintendent schools. Correct. There it is. There it is. [1:08:55] Okay. And now I'm looking for a motion to adjourn. I move to adjourn. [1:08:58] I'll second. [1:08:59] Thank you. Wait, who? That was Kristen. Kristen and Stephanie. [1:09:03] And then- Got it on the board ... at 8. All in favor? [1:09:06] Aye. [1:09:06] Aye. Okay, adjourned at 8:34. Thank you.
