[1:29:23] Chief Carlin dedicated many years of service to the city of Brexville and to the safety and
[1:29:27] well-being of our community.
[1:29:30] Prior to joining our Police Department Chief Carlin was a decorated marine who served two
[1:29:35] of duty in Vietnam. He still holds the distinction of being the only
[1:29:40] Brexville police officer in our history to serve in every rank in the police
[1:29:44] department. Patrolman, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain before ultimately
[1:29:49] becoming Brexville's seventh police chief. Chief Carlin excelled in all
[1:29:54] aspects of law enforcement. During his distinguished career he was a member of the
[1:29:59] Swat team.
[1:30:00] And was an early advocate for and later led our canine officers. He was a born leader who impacted many of the men still in our department. While he made many notable arrests throughout his career, the major event that forever impacted his career occurred on April 29, 1983. On that day, then Sergeant Carlin stopped an approach to vehicle at 21 and 82 for what he thought was to be a routine license plate violation.
[1:30:29] What he didn't know at the time is that the driver had killed his girlfriend and
[1:30:35] Akron earlier in that day and was on the run.
[1:30:38] Upon approaching the vehicle, the driver exited his vehicle and opened fire with a 32 automatic
[1:30:44] handgun.
[1:30:46] Sergeant Carlin was shot five times.
[1:30:49] The driver got back in his car and fled northbound on Brexville Road.
[1:30:53] Despite suffering severe injuries, Sargent Carlin heroically pulled himself into his cruiser
[1:30:59] and began pursuit.
[1:31:01] He chased the driver to CVCC, where the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
[1:31:08] Sargent Carlin attempted to pursue on foot but collapsed from significant blood loss.
[1:31:14] He was transported to the hospital where he underwent several surgeries and faced a lengthy
[1:31:19] recovery.
[1:31:19] But being the true hero of a civil servant that he was, he returned to work and
[1:31:26] completed a remarkable 37 year career as a Brexville police officer.
[1:31:31] We extend our deepest conglances to Chief Carlin's wife,
[1:31:35] Norley of 43 years, his family, friends, former colleagues, and
[1:31:41] all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
[1:31:44] As dedication, courage, and commitment to the City of Brexville will not be forgotten.
[1:31:51] In honor of Chief Carlin's illustrious career, and as many years of dedicated service to the safety of our residents,
[1:31:59] all flags at City of Brexville facilities will be lowered to half staff beginning tomorrow morning,
[1:32:05] and remained at half staff through Saturday evening following his funeral.

[1:32:16] May he rest in peace and may we never forget the legacy he leaves behind.
[1:32:21] I just, I want to say thank you to a lot of the current and
[1:32:26] former retired police officers who reach out to me over the last couple days,
[1:32:30] sharing all the great stories about chief.
[1:32:34] In particular, I want to thank it was, you know, a real,
[1:32:37] So, it's a real honor to be able to talk to the officer at the time, the police officer at the time who was in charge of the investigation, then Lieutenant Jerry Enruby of the Brexville Police Department.
