[3:44]
gill. >> yes. >> trustee gorback? >> yes. >> I'm a yes. We're now on item 2e.
[3:51]
we have our report from our parent organization lgbtq+
[3:57]
advisory council. Megan goble. The floor is yours. Thanks for being
[4:01]
here. >> thanks for having me. I haven't been here for a while, so it is nice to see you
[4:08]
all. Good evening. Dr. Mclaughlin, do we say president dr. Powell?
[4:16]
president powell? Cvusd administration and school board members, thank you for having me today. My name is megan goble, I use she/her pronouns.
[4:25]
our advisory council has continued to advance our mission of fostering an inclusive,
[4:29]
safe and supportive learning environment for all of our lgbtq+ students. This year we
[4:36]
saw representation from 17 school sites, four subcommittees were established and maintained and
[4:42]
we requested the district update the human growth and development curriculum to be more
[4:47]
inclusive of our lgbtq+ students. We have continued to help our school sites celebrate
[4:52]
and recognize october as lgbtq history month. And june as pride month and with the support of the conejo
[5:00]
school foundation we presented our proud to be me activity to all of our elementary school sites. We had a moving panel discussion with our lgbtq+ high
[5:08]
school students. While there were strengths identified in our district, such as our wellness centers,
[5:13]
many of the students expressed that teachers are not doing enough to call out homophobia or transphobia when it arises
[5:20]
in the classroom. They stated the teachers, their
[5:24]
impact really matters, they should be a safe space.
[5:29]
in 2025, 2026, we plan to continue advocating for
[5:33]
an inclusive curriculum and more consistently request feedback from our students.
[5:37]
we appreciate the engagement and support of our
[5:42]
cvusd administrators and school board members and look forward to our next academic year.
[5:48]
thank you. >> thank you so much. And moving on to item
[5:58]
2f, we have dr. Bergman here, I believe, to present a very
[6:06]
special recognition.
[6:14]
>> president powell, dr. Mclaughlin, members of the board, members of cabinet,
[6:19]
it brings me great pleasure to introduce one final student
[6:24]
to the board for this school year. I am in the presence of some greatness, to be honest with
[6:35]
you. Musical prodigy is not a term that is used lightly. But it is an absolutely apt term that I use to describe
[6:42]
the student who I am going to be presenting to you tonight.
[6:48]
a junior at thousand oaks high school and
[6:53]
aside from earning accolade after accolade after accolade this year, he was --
[6:57]
he auditioned, he was one of 1600 students in southern california who auditioned for the music
[7:04]
center's annual scholarship program. This is a program that has been around for about 37 years,
[7:09]
and, again, huge number of students in southern california audition
[7:14]
to bebe part of this. In roughly mid -- I guess early
[7:21]
may, it was announced that sergio had been identified as one of 115 or so semifinalists.
[7:27]
that in and of itself is pretty spectacular. $500 scholarship for being a
[7:33]
semifinalist. But wait, it gets better. We wait a couple of weeks, and lo and behold I get this
[7:40]
email from the music center, letting us know that sergio had been identified as one of the 14 grand finalists in the
[7:47]
music center's program. So, in addition to a $5,000 scholarship, sergio was
[7:53]
also given the invitation to perform at the theater in
[7:58]
downtown los angeles on june 6th to a packed house and you were up on stage,
[8:03]
I think you said, with a bassist. >> bassist and pianist. >> bassist and pianist. It was all about him.
[8:10]
a prodigy percussionist is just -- I can't begin
[8:15]
to explain just truly how amazing sergio is. I was talking to he and his mother before the meeting started and I just found
[8:22]
out that he had been invited to the vale jazz workshop this
[8:28]
summer and that identifies him as one of the top two percussionists in the nation. So he'll be heading off to vale in july in addition to
[8:37]
new york city for a while, just hobnobbing with new york's
[8:41]
elite. And learning how to even hone his craft even more. And the surprising thing is
[8:47]
that, again, he's only a junior. He's coming back for one more year and we are delighted
[8:52]
to have him. I'm incredibly proud of him. He is a shining example of what the music programs in this
[9:00]
district are capable of churning out. I'm incredibly fraud introduce all of you to mr.
[9:07]
sergio sipes.
[10:17]
>> okay. We are at item 2g and we now
[10:22]
get to recognize our 24- 25 classified employees of the
[10:28]
year.

>> dr. Mclaughlin, members of the board, cabinet and members of the school and extended community, my name is shawna
[10:52]

[11:02]

[17:29]
he is a team player, who will help staff whenever needed,
[17:33]
and without hesitation. John does it all for students,

[21:09]
maintained, expertly managing the complex custodial needs of three distinct programs with
[21:16]
unparalleled efficiency and grace. Beyond her exceptional work ethic, ada brings genuine care

pam is also remarkably considerate of our student needs, particularly those of our youngest learners
[27:56]

[28:01]
their classrooms. Congratulations, pam.
[29:23]
>> jamie taylor.
[29:35]
>> as the school office manager, jamie is an indispensable member
[29:40]
of the sequoia team, effortlessly jugging
[29:45]
countless responsibilities with a smile and a caring heart. She masterfully coordinates substitute teachers,
[29:50]

[30:37]
congratulations, jamie.
[31:49]

[32:30]
congratulations to her.
[33:23]
>> well deserved. >> thank you.
[34:37]
>> okay. Suddenly got a lot quieter in
[34:41]
here. Okay. We are at item 2h. And this is our recognition
[34:50]
of student board trustee aidan light. And tonight we will be recognizing him and saying
[34:57]
good-bye. And so, aidan, we have a couple of things we would like to present to you tonight, but,
[35:02]
first, I thought I would give everybody up here the opportunity to give any
[35:07]
comments or share any thoughts before we get to that. So,
[35:11]
does anybody want to share anything? You'd like to say to aidan?
[35:17]
>> I'll go. I have not formally prepared this, because, aidan, there is so much we can say.
[35:22]
it is truly been a joy to work with you as a student board
[35:27]
trustee. You have set the bar, sorry,
[35:32]
finn, I see you in the back, you have set the bar incredibly high in terms of everything that you
[35:38]
do. And there was moments where I was concerned about your school work, but as evidented by the fact that you were
[35:46]
a valedictorian and heading to ucla, my concerns were not justified. It is really been wonderful to
[35:52]
have you here on the board. I think you added tremendously to our board discussions, and
[35:57]
as I watch you run the student dak meetings, you have done an excellent job with that as
[36:02]
well. So thank you, congratulations and good luck in everything you
[36:08]
do. >> when I think of you as a student trustee, it is more
[36:16]
like student trustee. I mean, it's -- I wanted to
[36:21]
give you a map sometime of how to
[36:27]
find teo high school because you were never there. The way that -- every place I've been, you were always
[36:31]
there. You're everywhere. And the way you run the meetings, like,
[36:39]
trustee sylvester said, you set the bar incredibly high. Good luck, finn.
[36:46]
so, I just want to say how nice it has been to work with you, how professional you are, how just -- what a great co-
[36:54]
trustee you are. So, thank you very much, and good luck as a bruin and everything in your future.
[37:07]
>> so, I have had the honor of having worked with every student trustee since the
[37:13]
position's creation and I can confidently say you stand out
[37:19]
as a superstar among superstars. Your influence on the board
[37:24]
and on the district has been strategic and heart felt.
[37:32]
you synthesize student perspectives and particularly prioritize student well- being and a legacy that lasts beyond the immediate moment.
[37:42]
there is an old saying that a person has three names. The one the parents give them, the one their friends give
[37:50]
them, and the name they make for themselves. You have created a name and
[37:56]
a legacy that will endure and is incredibly special.
[38:02]
so, congratulations on that. Just make sure you go to class at ucla. It is a little different than
[38:08]
thousand oaks high school. Speaking from experience. And, please, don't be a
[38:13]
stranger. We will miss you.
[38:18]
>> well, trustee light, it has been a pleasure to be
[38:23]
your colleague and I will miss you. I have appreciated your questions, your
[38:29]
contributions, your collegiality. The way you ran the meetings right out of the
[38:36]
gate, starting with the first one of the year, was extraordinarily professional and competent.
[38:41]
you took the role very, very seriously and yet you brought yourself to it and you set your
[38:48]
fellow student representatives at ease and always made space for their important
[38:54]
contributions. We appreciate you. We wish you the very best of luck. And as trustee goldberg said, don't be a franker. A
[39:03]
stranger. Thank you so much. >> trustee light, first off, I want to comment on your
[39:09]
professionalism. Obviously we worked with, you know, a handful or so of student trustees and they all have been
[39:15]
great. Your professionalism as far as preparedness has been top notch. I think you've been
[39:23]
precedent-setting in some of the processes that you've put in place for yourself, but will also lead to others that will
[39:32]
be following in your footsteps and finn for next year, which I think many of the thoughts and
[39:40]
ideas and requests that you made us go back and forth and
[39:49]
problem solve and think out loud together on how to implement or provide a resolution to the
[39:56]
request. So, I just want to say I wish you the best of luck and thank you for a very dynamic
[40:01]
year. So, thank you.
[40:06]
>> okay. My turn. So, aidan, I thought at first I was going to try to write you
[40:13]
a poem, but then I realized I possibly couldn't do any better than mrs. Jud's poem for
[40:19]
you she wrote and presented at your last
[40:25]
sdad meeting. I'll say my words of thanks and
[40:30]
echo what we heard tonight. Having you at meetings
[40:36]
and events and sites across the district throughout the year has really been helpful to make you part of this team, but I
[40:43]
wager also really helped you in your role as student trustee. Your leadership was a
[40:49]
really important part of this role and I thank you for that work, not only in terms of bringing student voice to decision- making, but also for
[40:56]
being a model to other students and a variety of areas. Your composure, the
[41:01]
intention and thought you put into everything you do, your constant attention on inclusion while
[41:08]
facilitating meetings, those are a few examples. And finally, your time with us here in the board room, we
[41:13]
had a lot of discussions this year on many topics, budgets and
[41:18]
cell phone policy and valedictorian
[41:22]
systems, artificial intelligence, sexual harassment and assault reporting and more and your voice has been really critical throughout.
[41:28]
you've asked great questions, you've never hesitated to bring ideas forward in ways that really helped to further the discussions we were having. And helped us to make
[41:36]
decisions in really thoughtful and effective ways. In fact, I think it has been said a couple of times
[41:43]
that sometimes you're more eloquent than any of the adults up here. So we won't debate that right
[41:49]
now. I'm putting that out there. So we have some things we're going to gift to you.
[41:54]
first, I also have a ittle something from me. It is a children's book from a poet I
[42:00]
like named cleo wade. And it is called may you love and be loved, wishes for your
[42:08]
life. It is a love letter to the infinite potential of the future.
[42:13]
and I'm a big believer in the need for more leaders who keep love at the core of what they
[42:19]
do. Love for others, love for themselves, love for their community, and as you continue to develop as a
[42:25]
leaderleader all ways, I hope you'll consider keeping love in the mix. We know we need to be
[42:30]
including factors like expertise and the law and other people's opinions and thoughts and data
[42:37]
and analytics and goal alignment and all these other things, but I think that having love is
[42:42]
part of the equation really help us in our path to making decisions that are empathetic and people- centered
[42:49]
and ultimately help create a better world. So, that's for me. We also have a certificate for
[42:57]
you, a card from all of us, certificate of achievement,
[43:01]
the board of education hereby presents this recognition to aidan light in honor of your outstanding leadership and
[43:07]
service as a student board trustee and committee chair and in recognition of your
[43:11]
unwavering dedication and support to the student families and community of the
[43:18]
conejo valley unified school district for 24-25. I think trustee goldberg, do you want to bring that over too? We also have an
[43:26]
engraved gavel that you can use.
[44:06]
>> engraved trustee light. Thank you. Thank you, everyone.
[44:11]
>> so, trustee light, we want to grab a picture, but I believe you have some comments you wanted to share with us at
[44:16]
this time as well. >> yeah.
[44:20]
>> okay. >> I sit before you today saying something I've never been
[44:27]
able to say in my life and that is that I am not a student of the conejo valley unified school
[44:35]
district. That's because the last time this was true, I was not old enough to understand what a
[44:39]
school district was nor speak this sentence as I was not yet 2 years old starting at horizon
[44:45]
hills. And I've been here ever since, experiencing the exceptional educational
[44:49]
experiences for all students, filled with opportunities and choices that foster unique gifts and
[44:54]
prepare students to reach their full potential and diverse, challenging and changing world.
[44:59]
our new mission statement. And so I don't know how to feel as I say that for the first time in my life.
[45:07]
I've been given so many opportunities here and I will forever be grateful. The people in this room
[45:12]
and everyone in the community I've spoken to for this position will forever be part of my
[45:20]
foundation. I've learned so much. I'm so happy more students will be able to follow in
[45:24]
these footsteps and learn and grow as I did while still in high school. Though it is hard to say good-bye.
[45:29]
to my successor, I'm excited to see what you do in this position and to see what this opportunity does for you.
[45:34]
I started thinking in december how I may want to write these comments and after months of
[45:39]
thought, I was still editing them at 5:55 right before the meeting. But this is what I think I want to say.
[45:46]
to my fellow cvusd students and recent graduates, thank you for entrusting me with the
[45:51]
opportunity to serve as your student board of education trustee. I hope I've been able
[45:55]
to represent each and every one of you. I've tried my best. I've visited every school
[46:00]
site and tried to connect with as many students as possible and reply to any communication when students reached out asking
[46:06]
to talk. I hope you're proud to see up here on the board representing you and feel pride in the way your district runs. So I want to share a quick
[46:14]
story. In order to be eligible to run for this position, students must have served in sdak 4 one
[46:21]
year, anyone looking to join us up here, keep your eye out for those applications.
[46:27]
my journey, I started in march 2021 as a 13-year- old over at
[46:37]
khaliah whose goal came to achieve this position and I applied for sdad and interviewed and as an eighth
[46:43]
grader, I pitched myself as someone who would be able to bring in the
[46:47]
underclassmen perspective and voice. And how it is a transition to our high schools and I was
[46:53]
rejected. And so I tried again in january 2022 when a position opened up. Still a freshman, similar
[46:59]
agenda, similar platform, and I was rejected. Twice. But when I applied to sdak in
[47:10]
march 2022, applying for my of so sophomore year, going in, no prep, no platform, genuine interview, I was accepted and that april I was named chair of the budget subcommittee and
[47:17]
then the next next the member at large. The next I was voted sdak chairperson, the meeting I
[47:26]
ran was between two hospital stays for life threatening pneumonia and there wearing a risk,
[47:31]
barely able to breathe and delivering my speech to run. And yet I was able to win that election.
[47:35]
and so the same person who was rejected from sdak twice had
[47:39]
the chance to lead it and to sit here. Every one you've will face
[47:45]
rejection, whether by college, career, another person, something we can't imagine yet.
[47:50]
here is a few things I hope you learned as a student here, watching a fellow student on the
[47:55]
dais, I hope I've shown that the little 13-year- old cougar had the potential to join sdak
[48:04]
but chair it and each of you has that potential to go for what you want to go for.
[48:12]
you will face rejection, you shouldn't be discouraged. Take it in stride and try again. There is a place for every
[48:20]
one of you. The little kid that had no idea what a school board was other than it was the body that
[48:25]
made the rules I had to follow and could serve on it within a decade, what can't you do. Rejected from the first step on
[48:32]
this journey, to fulfill this dream could achieve it within five years, what can't you do?
[48:37]
you have a district that loves you, cares about you, and that fights for you. I walk out tonight knowing
[48:42]
you will all be set up for success, surrounded by people that support you. So what can't you do?
[49:03]
>> thank you, I want we want to get a picture with you. Do you want to come down here? I don't know if you want
[49:08]
to have your mom have a picture with you too? And I think you need to do the walk-through, right? Okay. Let's do it.
[51:49]
>> okay. We are now atat comments, item 2i.
[51:56]
the cvusd wants to hear from students, parents, employees and our community. All individuals have the
[52:02]
right to provide public comments during our school board meetings under government code section
[52:08]
549543. Comments regarding specific items listed on tonight's agenda must be made when that
[52:13]
agenda item is called. If you wish to speak on a topic not on tonight's agenda, now is the time to provide your
[52:18]
public comment. If you have not already done so and wish to speak, please hand in your blue card to mrs. Philemon.
[52:23]
please note if you have any materials to hand to the board members, please provide
[52:28]
these materials to mrs. Philemon for distribution to the board. The board cannot undertake
[52:33]
any action or discussion on items not on tonight's posted agenda. However, members of the board
[52:38]
or its staff may briefly reply to comments or questions posed by the public. Usually we will wait until
[52:43]
the end of the public comment period before responding. As our meetings are held in public, your comments will
[52:48]
be heard by those who are attending or watching a broadcast. In addition, the board
[52:53]
encourages students to participate in civic affairs, therefore we hope students are watching this meeting or in tonight's audience.
[52:58]
please be mindful of that and make your comments factual and offer them in a respectful
[53:04]
manner. In compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, the governing board strives to respect the privacy rights of students and
[53:10]
employees during our meetings. This includes the right for the identities of students to remain confidential.
[53:15]
we also ask that speakers be sensitive to our employees legal rights to privacy and
[53:19]
confidentiality. As a reminder, those requesting to speak at this time will speak on items that are not on the board agenda.
[53:25]
please note that speaker cards will not be accepted once the board starts the public comments
[53:30]
agenda item with the first speaker.
[53:35]
okay. In that case, we are moving
[53:40]
on to section 3, action items, 3a.
[53:44]
do I have a motion? >> president powell. >> yes, trustee goldberg. >> I move we rat fight changes to the 2025, 2026
[53:52]
and 2026, 2027 school years calendars as submitted.
[53:57]
>> second. >> thank you, is there any discussion?
[54:01]
seeing none, we'll vote. Trustee light.
[54:06]
>> yes. >> trustee gill. >> yes. >> trustee gorback. >> yes. >> trusty
[54:12]
goldberg. >> yes. >> trustee sylvester. >> yes.
[54:17]
>> I'm a yes. Item 3b, do I have a
[54:22]
motion? >> yes. >> president powell. >> trustee sylvester.
[54:26]
>> I move that we improve the instructional continuity learning plan as submitted.
[54:34]
>> thank you. >> second. >> is there any discussion on this item?
[54:40]
>> did you want to provide any information? You had a committee that met last week just to brief
[54:45]
the board on that meeting. >> yes. The continuity plan was
[54:52]
originally brought forward to the board on may 21st and subsequent to that meeting on june 9th, a team
[54:57]
of instructional service and student services staff met with a great team from uact. We talked about the plan,
[55:05]
to clarify a number of features as well as to really just talk overall about how
[55:13]
important it is that we communicate with each other during times of natural disaster or emergencies and
[55:20]
what a strong partnership we have to build on. We did also add some language into the plan that is new, stated on page 4, which
[55:27]
states if any of these circumstances -- sorry, if any of these circumstances would impact working conditions and employees,
[55:36]
cvusd administration and its labor partners would work collaboratively together to bargain those impacts.
[55:43]
>> great, thank you. Any questions or comments? Okay. In that case, we will vote.
[55:49]
trustee light. >> yes. >> trustee goldberg. >> yes. >>
[55:55]
trustee sylvester. >> yes. >> trustee gorback.
[55:59]
>> yes. >> trustee gill. >> yes. >> I'm a yes.
[56:04]
we are now at item 3c, do I have a motion? >> president powell. >> yes, trustee gill.
[56:10]
>> I move we approve the 2025, 2026 local control
[56:14]
and accountability plan, the lcap.
[56:20]
>> second. >> thank you. Any discussion or any comments?
[56:26]
from staff? >> can I ask a quick -- just want to confirm, has
[56:31]
anything material changed in this since we discussed it at the last
[56:36]
meeting?
[56:41]
>> nothing material. Some of the -- I got some additional feedback on some of the reflection
[56:47]
problems and they have to be in a very specific template, so I took that content and made sure it reflected
[56:53]
the template that is required. The county office also adjusted
[56:58]
some of the budget numbers, they gave me some feedback there
[57:03]
to reflect the actuals in the calculator but none of those budget numbers were
[57:08]
substantial at all. >> great, thank you.
[57:14]
>> seeing no other questions or comments, we'll vote. Trustee light.
[57:19]
>> yes. >> trustee gorback. >> yes. >> trustee
[57:23]
sylvester. >> yes. Trustee goldberg. >> yes.
[57:28]
>> trustee gill. >> yes. >> I'm a yes, motion ies 5- 0 with a preferential yes
[57:36]
vote from trustee light. Okay, we're at 3d.
[57:42]
this is business services second public hearing for our 25, 26 proposed budget.
[57:50]
so, we will now convene a second public hearing to receive public testimony concerning the proposed 2025- 2026
[57:57]
budget, general funds and ancillary funds. Are there any public cards --
[58:02]
public comment cards on this item?
[58:07]
okay. Because there are no public comments, I will now close the public hearing at 6:59 p.m.
[58:18]
do we have any comments or discussion from individual board members or any comments
[58:24]
from dr. Hayek? >> on the next item?
[58:28]
>> no, on this one. We don't have a vote on this
[58:33]
one. No comments or anything, we can move on to 3e. First I want to get a motion on
[58:38]
that. Do I have a motion for 3e? >> president powell. >> yes. >> I move that we approve the 2025- 2026 proposed budget
[58:45]
for the general ancillary funds as submitted. >> second. >> thank you.
[59:16]
that is a swing of $3 million potentially for us. We will have to wait and see until they do the final to see how that shakes
[59:24]
out. >> thank you.
[59:31]
>> any questions, comments? >> okay. We will vote. Trustee
[59:36]
light? >> yes. >> trustee sylvester? >> yes.
[59:40]
>> trustee gill? >> yes. >> trustee goldberg? >> yes.
[59:45]
>> trustee gorback? >> yes. >> I am yes. Motion carries 5-0. We are at 3f. The child
[59:58]
nutrition annual report. Do I have a motion? >> president powell? >> yes, trustee.
[1:00:03]
>> I move that we accept the 2024/2025 annual report.
[1:00:09]
>> second. >> I know we have a
[1:00:14]
presentation. >> this is our annual child
[1:00:18]
nutrition services report. I want to formally introduce our director of child nutrition, sarah phillips, who has been
[1:00:25]
with us since april? >> yep. >> dr. Powell, members of the board and executive cabinet,
[1:00:30]
good evening y. Am sarah phillips, director of child
[1:00:35]
nutrition services. So like he menged mentioned I put this
[1:00:42]
together in april. I will get started with numbers,
[1:00:46]
participation, in elementary it averages 39% of students, middle
[1:00:52]
school roughly 40, high school, 30. Throughout the 24-25 school
[1:00:56]
year we served over 800,000 breakfasts and over 1.1 million
[1:01:02]
lunches. Some of the favorite menu items for elementary were
[1:01:07]
waffle breakfast bowl, protein pasta with meat sauce, popcorn
[1:01:15]
chicken, bean and cheese burrito. Grill cheese. Maple
[1:01:19]
pancakes, cheese burger, chicken sandwich, orange chicken and
[1:01:24]
rice bowl, bacon club sandwich and quesadilla. With the help of
[1:01:28]
kim and elon we developed a nutrition service logo, it will
[1:01:33]
go on uniforms, any social media, and some equipment. An
[1:01:38]
example of that would be our share tables we were able to roll out at the end of this school year, they are placed at
[1:01:44]
the end of serving lines to hopefully capture unwanted food
[1:01:48]
items from students to divert them from the trash, give them a second chance at being consumed by another student. As you can
[1:01:54]
see with the picture here, clearly labeled share table and there little bit of blurb of how students can use to help reduce
[1:02:03]
food waste. Those top two containers are for room temperature food or hot items which don't often find
[1:02:10]
themselves on the shared table, the bottom two containers go in the freezer the night before so they are chilled. If a student
[1:02:15]
wants to leave a yogurt or milk on the share table, the student
[1:02:21]
looking feels assured it is kept at a safe temperature. We hope
[1:02:26]
to roll those out to elementaries next year. Student taste test, I was not sure if we would get to them this year but
[1:02:32]
within my first few days I received a letter from a student at glenwood signed by all of his classmates addressed to the
[1:02:39]
people who decide what is on the menu. He was asking for
[1:02:46]
crescents to be aded to the menu. I knew there was a whole
[1:02:50]
grain ham and swis cheese crescent, which is really good, modeled off the one they serve at starbucks, so we went out to
[1:03:00]
glenwood and it was one of my favorite days seeing that student come out and realize there we were and we had
[1:03:07]
cressoners. That was special. We had the chance to sample a vegan
[1:03:19]
and gluten free black bean taquito, the taste tests wentwell. The items will be on the menu next year. Summer meals
[1:03:29]
have kicked off on that flier, posted on social media, those
[1:03:34]
meals and locations are open to the public, summer school meals
[1:03:40]
served at the schools participating in summer school are closed campuses, only opened to those students. With starting
[1:03:46]
in april I wanted to give a look ahead of what some goals are for
[1:03:53]
child nutrition, expanding menu offerings, whether that is
[1:04:01]
rotating the menu options, providing more variety for
[1:04:09]
students, getting them excited to participate to share in a meal with friends, it is very important to me. Of course,
[1:04:16]
reintroducing harvest of the month. We have the opportunity to work with so many local organic farmers and partnering
[1:04:24]
with food hubs such as farm cart organic and aperic provide them
[1:04:34]
with local organic produce in their lunch. I think that is all.
[1:04:41]
>> thank you. >> do we have any questions or
[1:04:46]
comments from the board? >> yes, trustee light?
[1:04:51]
>> two quick things, the first one, a previous director, ms.
[1:04:57]
beck, had asked student district advisory committee to form a designated taste test panel to meet a few times a year to have
[1:05:03]
consistent voices and advisory group to child nutritional services, I wanted to ask if that is something you would be
[1:05:09]
interested in having, but sdac can work on putting together or if you are going to move towards the sight taste tests.
[1:05:18]
>> we can explore either. I am open to forming a committee.
[1:05:25]
>> I will connect you with our next chair person. >> sounds good. Thank you. >> next final question, just in
[1:05:32]
the interest of fellow students, graduates getting their question out because it is something I got a lot, obviously at one
[1:05:37]
point all of our meals were students had to pay and right now we have the universal free meals for all, which left a
[1:05:45]
number of graduating and rising high school students with money
[1:05:50]
left unspent. What is the appropriate avenue for students to go up about retrieving that money back?
[1:05:56]
>> graduating high school students can reach out to amy white, assist ant director of child nutrition services,
[1:06:04]
requesting a fund balance refund. She will process it and put a check in the mail. >> thank you so much. Welcome.
[1:06:17]
>> trustee? >> first of all, thank you, and welcome. I am sure this is not on your agenda three months
[1:06:24]
after taking the job, but very appreciated. I want to suggest that glenwood student will be a future student trustee. We are
[1:06:35]
all incredibly thankful for ability to offer free summer
[1:06:39]
meals. Part of my curiosity is, you know, we have a location in
[1:06:45]
oak park, how do we determine where we should be?
[1:06:49]
>> sure. So, we have a history of working with these organizations and partnering with them. I am not sure if
[1:06:55]
their locations have changed over the years, but that is how
[1:07:00]
they were chosen, from existing relationships. >> okay. Thank you.
[1:07:08]
>> we have met at wellness committee, and I want to thank you for your involvement in that, enthusiastic involvement.
[1:07:14]
you are wringing in the, both the heated and the heated and
[1:07:22]
refrigerated share tables. All of the what looks like scrumptious new dishes. Thank you for your involvement and
[1:07:30]
welcome here. >> thank you. >> go ahead. >> I will add my gratitude. I
[1:07:35]
was at a school site recently and all the kids were a buzz
[1:07:44]
about the waffle bowl. Great job. I also want to thank you for the excitement that you seem to have brought to the parent
[1:07:50]
community as well, so, keep up the good work.
[1:08:04]
>> I will also say welcome. You know, I went to a presentation at west lake high school. I am trying to figure how we can do
[1:08:11]
better. One of the projects of the student was taking food wastes, I can't remember how many sites, but they went
[1:08:17]
through a process of-- they were taking it to animals, to farms,
[1:08:22]
people with horses. I don't know how viable that kind of thing is, if it was a one-time project, but seemed like a cool
[1:08:28]
way to deal with extra food. >> definitely.
[1:08:34]
>> okay. No other comment. Thank you so much. >> thank you. >> okay. We are at our consent
[1:08:42]
agenda. Do I have a motion? >> president powell. >> yes, trustee light? >> I move we approve our consent
[1:08:47]
agenda as submitted. >> second. >> it has been moved and seconded. Do we have discussion?
[1:08:54]
>> seeing none, we will vote. Trustee light? >> yes. >> trustee gorback?
[1:08:59]
>> yes. >> trustee goldberg? >> yes. >> trustee gill?
[1:09:03]
>> yes. >> trustee sylvester? >> yes. >> I am a yes. Motion carries
[1:09:09]
5-0 with preferential yes vote from trustee light.
[1:09:15]
>> with that we are at section five, do we have any committee
[1:09:22]
reports tonight? That anybody would like to share? Seeing shaking heads. Okay. Then we will move on to comments from
[1:09:29]
the board of education, agenda item 5b, starting with trustee
[1:09:35]
light. >> good evening conejo valley, it has been a very busy two weeks
[1:09:42]
as we celebrated all of our student's accomplishments this year y. Had a chance to make it it each comprehensive high
[1:09:48]
school senior scholarship night and graduation and had the chance to make it to maple senior walk and watch the joy of
[1:09:56]
graduating seniors visiting and younger learners looking up to their future. As of now on our swagit, where board meetings are
[1:10:04]
streamed, the videos are available for watching and I had a chance to watch the ones I couldn't make it to, due to my
[1:10:10]
own graduation practice. Few final things. In regards to the
[1:10:18]
graduations, so many are involved, from stepping up the stage, to practicing with our students, streaming the events,
[1:10:24]
cleaning up after, printing the programs, and so much more in the background. Thank you for all of your work at the close of
[1:10:31]
the school year. Thank you to all of the fabulous district staff who worked so hard to insure the exceptional
[1:10:38]
educational experiences for all students. It has been a pleasure working with and learning from so many of you. To the board and
[1:10:43]
cabinet, thank you for all your support as I became accustom to the role and for your support throughout the year. My work
[1:10:49]
would not have been possible without you. Finally, thanks to all of the community. For supporting a student voice on
[1:10:55]
the dis and welcome me in so many places throughout the
[1:11:00]
communityty, you have have made this a joy. That is all for this term. Have a wonderful summer and wonderful lives, conejo
[1:11:05]
valley y. Am always here for you. Of course, one last time. Good night. >> thank you, trustee light.
[1:11:14]
>>> we will move on to trustee gorback.
[1:11:21]
>> good evening. Happy pride month still. Happy mental health
[1:11:26]
awareness month. I can't tell you how important it is to
[1:11:31]
recognize mental health, and I am glad that we have an
[1:11:38]
extensive mental health program. I went to several graduations of
[1:11:44]
comprehensive schools, and other high schools, middle schools,
[1:11:50]
elementary schools. As each one is so individual and has its own
[1:11:56]
character, I imagine that each student within each graduation
[1:12:01]
it is its own significance. Last week was a week of celebration,
[1:12:06]
of accomplishment, and just joy of what our district does. I
[1:12:10]
also walk the week before that, I went to the weathersfield
[1:12:15]
walk, featured on the local news. Again, the tradition of
[1:12:20]
the eyes, the glow in the eyes of the 6th graders, excuse me,
[1:12:25]
5th graders, as they looked up at these gods that were walking
[1:12:31]
around them in uniform, in gowns. Then the fun of them going in the playground and using the apparatus at the
[1:12:38]
elementary school and play, bringing back the memories of how they felt as 5th graders. So, just want to end with it has
[1:12:47]
been a fantastic year. Next year will be better, and have a great
[1:12:51]
summer. We will see you before you know it.
[1:12:58]
>> thank you. Trustee gill. >> thank you. Good evening. I want to express my thanks to all of the folks who worked so very
[1:13:05]
hard to make all of the end of the year celebrations for us
[1:13:14]
safe, happy, joyous, and so beautiful. It is such a privilege for us to be able to take part in elementary school
[1:13:21]
cullmanations, middle school promotions, and high school graduations. Every one of those ceremonies with big milestones
[1:13:29]
for our students, our families, and all of the small triumphs
[1:13:35]
that we have had along the year. I took note at each of these
[1:13:39]
celebrations but especially at the elementary schools, this
[1:13:50]
community has rallied, our schools did such extra ordinary work supported by school staff and administrators, especially
[1:13:56]
when I was at the elementary schools, each of these
[1:14:01]
celebrations students were marking a lot of growth and
[1:14:06]
resilience since that disruption we all experienced. At the
[1:14:10]
elementary schools, those students experienced the disruption of covid during their kindergarten and first-grade
[1:14:17]
years. I remember back at that time that my first question was
[1:14:22]
to our superintendent&I asked him, how are our students who are just beginning to learn to read fairing? He told me they
[1:14:30]
were going to be fine. And they are. They are confident, great
[1:14:39]
readers, and fabulous writers, in fact, wonderful public speakers, something I definitely was not when I left the 5th
[1:14:48]
grade. So, I want to say a special amount of gratitude to
[1:14:53]
our teachers and our entire school family for what we
[1:15:00]
accomplished and what we got through together and how rain shower students are shining in the aftermath. I am grateful. I
[1:15:05]
will miss you all during the summer but I hope you have a wonderful time and I will be so happy to see everybody come back
[1:15:11]
safe in august. Thank you.
[1:15:15]
>> thank you, trustee gill. >> trustee goldberg. >> so, I am just going to echo the gratitude for everybody, for
[1:15:30]
an amazing year across the board, culminating with graduations at all levels. The speeches and the talent, just
[1:15:38]
the joy was palpable. The speeches were incredible. Each
[1:15:42]
one, I thought, can't get better than this, and it did. So
[1:15:49]
they were amazing. I want to thank all of the staff who made
[1:15:56]
everybody feel safe from gate at the beginning, from when you
[1:16:02]
walked into the gate and stayed there, throughout the whole ceremony, and then walked out. It was not lost on me that the
[1:16:09]
tone was set from the beginning, and I really appreciated it. I
[1:16:18]
want to give a special shoutout, so we talked about glenwood, we
[1:16:26]
talked about the senior walks. Glenwood had-- they shared a
[1:16:32]
photo of the seniors sitting on the kindergarten carpet with
[1:16:38]
their kindergarten teacher, the comment was made that they didn't want to leave. They just wanted to play and be kids. I
[1:16:46]
think that comfort and that safety that they felt in that
[1:16:52]
room is such a gift, and I want to thank all of the teachers
[1:16:56]
that make their students feel that way. I also want to give a
[1:17:02]
very special shoutout to, we are all exhausted, it was a very
[1:17:09]
long month, very long week. But in particular, richard blake for
[1:17:15]
his dedication, his heart, for always showing up, even when it
[1:17:21]
is hard. You can't touch that kind of dedication and heart.
[1:17:26]
so, thank you very much. To him. And hags, everybody.
[1:17:32]
>> thank you, trustee goldberg. Trustee sylvester. >> are you going to sign my year book? Um, good evening. I think
[1:17:42]
my fellow trustees have really expressed what last week was like. It was really a week of joyous celebration, and it was a
[1:17:48]
week that could not have taken place without the efforts of so,
[1:17:53]
so many. It seems a little daunting at the beginning to think I am going to all these graduations and sit in the hot
[1:18:01]
is sun in a black robe but it is a wonderful experience. I want
[1:18:07]
to thank all the principals who welcomed us and made it very
[1:18:14]
easy for us to participate. As mentioned, the speeches were
[1:18:19]
brilliant, the performances were absolutely amazing,er and it really just was joyous, that is pretty much all I can say about
[1:18:29]
that. So, again, congratulations to everybody who graduated every
[1:18:36]
student moving up. I hope everybody has a wonderful, wonderful summer. We will be back here august 13th, and I
[1:18:42]
hope to see everybody then. Good night.
[1:18:46]
>> thank you, trustee sylvester. >> I will echo the sentiments of my colleagues on the amazing graduation end of year
[1:18:54]
celebrations last week, they were wonderful. I want to say
[1:19:02]
happy pride month and I wanted to, again, say thank you to meghan global for her report for lgbtqia, that report, and for
[1:19:13]
her leadership as well as everybody else on the executive
[1:19:19]
team. I want to wish everybody a safe and restful summer, and to our school community as well as the greater conejo valley, these
[1:19:27]
are words I think probably said many times before, but in today's world, it seems like they may have more meaning than
[1:19:36]
ever, umjust the trauma and fear I know lot of are feeling now, including our own students and community members, during these
[1:19:48]
real times is overwhelming and exhausting. If are in a dark place or living in fear, whether it is related to any
[1:19:55]
immigration-related activity or feeling the brunt of any sort of bigotry or hatred, please know you are loved, and that there
[1:20:02]
are many, many people in our school community and our greater community who are here to support you and lift you up.
[1:20:12]
there are organizations and hotlines across our country, our county, that are available for support. With that, I hand it
[1:20:21]
off to dr. Mclachlan. >> as we concluded last week
[1:20:26]
from superintendent's perspective, there is a lot of work that goes in to that 180-days of school, but the last
[1:20:31]
week of school and all the promotions and graduations and
[1:20:36]
everything are taking place from my perspective, it was a great
[1:20:40]
week and a lot of thanks go out to all of our employees who set
[1:20:45]
up chairs, take down chairs, moved chairs to another school,
[1:20:50]
set up sound systems, moved sound systems, set up at another
[1:20:55]
school, it is a continuous week of motion and movement and there
[1:21:00]
are people who coordinate those things but they-- it wouldn't go unnoticed if we didn't point out the hard work that goes in
[1:21:06]
to setting those up. So often we just get to see the exciteal
[1:21:12]
part. There is so much behind the scenes that get done, so that we see the good stuff. So, shoutout to everybody. I want to
[1:21:21]
wish everybody a safe summer and get some rest and spend time
[1:21:26]
with friends and family, do some things that you enjoy, and we will be back at it again sooner than later. Thank you.
[1:21:36]
>>> okay.with that we are item 6, adjournment. Do we have any future board topics that board members would like to add?
[1:21:44]
trustee light? >> um, just I know this is a kind of new situation because of the first student trustee
[1:21:52]
assigned board committee, I would recommend updating for the new trustee and his interests in the fall.
[1:21:57]
>> thank you.
[1:22:05]
>> any other? Okay. Seeing no
