[6:56] This year we have continued [6:56] with the video version [7:03] families have been leveraging [7:04] the resources and services [7:06] provided by the cal works [7:08] program to gain financial [7:09] independence and secure a safe [7:11] and quality of life and a [7:12] brighter future for their [7:13] children. [7:14] Cal works continues to expand [7:15] its network of community [7:16] partnerships and programs to [7:18] meet a vast arave needs, from [7:19] child care to transportation, [7:20] housing assistance to [7:21] employment and education so [7:25] each individual amily can [7:27] partner with cal works to put [7:29] a specialized plan in place [7:30] for their unique journey. [7:32] This afternoon, we'd like to [7:34] share a video highlighting the [7:36] inspirational stories of the [7:38] 2023 cal works achievement [7:43] awards honorees. [7:43] They embodied essence of what [7:45] it means to thrive in [7:47] impossible odds and maintain [7:50] dill focus in extremely [7:51] difficult situations. [8:51] So cal works is very [8:55] beneficial and I live and work [8:57] by going to school. [8:59] Cal works can help you get [9:00] good job. [9:00] It help my family with english [9:03] and many other things. [9:04] It is a very good experience [9:10] here. [9:12] >> for future generations of [9:12] your family listening to this [9:14] year's from now, is there any [9:16] wisdom you would want to pass [9:18] on to them? What would you [9:21] want home to snow. [9:22] >> so I will tell my kids to [9:24] get a higher education, and to [9:27] focus on education because it [9:29] will help the community and [9:31] the treatment around you. [9:33] >> passionate and benevolent [9:36] were two words that perfectly [9:37] describe cynthia gomez, a [9:39] single mother of three. [9:40] Her journey shows with the [9:41] combination of determination, [9:43] sacrifice and a little [9:44] assistance, anyone with [9:45] achieve their aspirations. [9:47] >> I went to my internship [9:49] last year and then I always [9:53] want to be medical to work [9:58] there, because I haven't been [10:00] there, right. [10:01] I know how to navigate the [10:03] system. [10:04] And I know the language or [10:07] what's a challenge for [10:08] doctors, you know, understand [10:09] what's going on. [10:10] I feel so happy to be able to [10:13] help my community and help [10:14] another community and that is [10:16] my main goal, support others [10:17] as you support me when I was [10:19] in the need for it's very [10:26] supporting to me, because my [10:27] husband is always available [10:29] when I need her. [10:33] Every time I need something, [10:37] it was her, it's great, and [10:38] I'm so blessed for that. [10:40] I don't have words to say [10:40] thank you to her. [10:43] >> ashley's competence is [10:43] extraordinary moving that with [10:44] determination, resilience and [10:45] support they can challenge [10:48] any -- concur any challenge [10:50] for themselves, their family [10:50] and be community. [10:52] >> being enrolled in the came [10:54] works program has changed my [10:55] life in many ways, the ability [10:57] to even attend school and to [11:11] be able -- without the cal [11:12] works program, I wouldn't be [11:13] able to do any of this, you [11:15] know, tuition and school is [11:16] very expensive and I couldn't [11:22] imagine having to do with [11:23] everything that life demands [11:25] and paying for this on top of [11:27] that, t would never be [11:31] possible. [11:32] That's been the biggest [11:32] influence through the whole [11:33] process is getting done while [11:34] I have the support. [11:40] There's nothing more than I [11:42] love to o where having a [11:44] clinic, women and children, [11:45] even men that need the support [11:50] and just some steppingstones [11:51] to get to where they need to [11:53] be. [11:54] >> reporter: porsha began her [11:54] cal works journey as the [11:56] little caretaker of her young [11:58] daughters and demonstrated an [11:59] ability to maneuver through [12:00] difficult situations and [12:01] utilize available resources [12:03] such as the cal works and [12:05] housing sports programs to [12:07] regain her footing and finance [12:11] stability. [12:13] >> I'd say, hey, you know, [12:14] sky's the limit and you should [12:16] take all advantage of the [12:24] opportunity. [12:25] Cal works has the help and [12:27] thanks to make a better life [12:29] for myself. [12:29] I would have to say when my [12:32] daughter recently graduated [12:35] daycare y daughter was just [12:41] smiling at me and kept her [12:43] eyes on me, and to me that was [12:46] confirmation, hey, mom, you [12:48] overcame those things and now [12:50] she was proud of me. [12:51] So it's one of the proudest [12:52] moments and makes me also very [12:54] happy for the future, happy [12:56] homes and proud moments to [12:57] look forward to. [13:00] >> a refugee from ukraine, she [13:03] was given two hours to pack [13:04] her hings and fully with [13:07] herson when russia invaded. [13:10] She's working hard in [13:11] marketing to build a career [13:13] and a brighter future for her [13:16] family. [13:17] >> how has being enrolled in [13:19] the cal works program, how has [13:20] that changed your life? [13:22] >> the participation in the [13:24] program give me opportunity to [13:28] learn english and that eally [13:30] adopt to the contrary. [13:36] It's a big help for me and my [13:39] son. [13:39] >> you talked about cal works [13:41] and how it changed your life. [13:59] You need to make this the best [14:05] plan. [16:27] President lee and I were [16:29] teasing a little bit, when you [16:34] celebrate or this kind of [16:36] event, it deserves the full [16:38] accommodation. [16:38] This is probably an event that [16:40] most olks in the room are [16:44] wholly unaware of. [16:47] It was literally 100 years [16:50] ago, and just to be clear, [16:51] none of the board members were [16:53] here then. [16:54] I was literally 100 years ago [16:56] this week, just a couple days [16:57] away from now, it actually [16:58] will be the 100th [17:01] birthday -- of our [17:02] extraordinary stevens creek [17:05] park. [17:06] And the birth of that park [17:12] with 400 air strikes really [17:16] was the birth of our county [17:19] park system it will started [17:24] with 400 acres, the park its [17:26] more than 1,000 shakers. [17:28] It is the first park in our [17:31] know more than two dozen park [17:33] system with more than 50,000 [17:34] acres and we take it for [17:36] granted but somebody had to -- [17:38] that somebody had to have that [17:39] vision all those years ago and [17:42] build on that vision [17:42] throughout the course of the [17:43] last century. [17:47] >> I'm going to ask if we [17:49] could tee up the video which [17:51] will do a much better job than [17:53] I showing the splendor this [17:56] real july, and then I'm going [17:57] to ask don and some of his [17:59] folks from the park come on up [17:59] and let him tell us a little [18:03] bit why his is a special [18:04] occasion and also take the [18:06] photo with all of those people [18:09] in parks. [18:20] >> 100 years ago the county [18:21] was able to require 400 acres [18:24] near cupertino which was the [18:25] beginning of stevens creek [18:26] county park, the first county [18:28] park of the system. [18:28] The land was acquired to [18:30] people had access for [18:33] recreation as well as [18:33] preservation and protection of [18:35] the habitats that were [18:36] associated with that area. [18:37] Following the first purchase [18:38] of this property, the land was [18:40] open for the public to [18:41] utilize. [18:42] This is prior to a parks [18:44] department being in service. [18:46] So it was an advantage by the [18:49] public works department but [18:50] open to the public to be able [18:51] to enjoy burl about [18:52] preservation this landscape [18:53] and allowing the combination [18:55] of preservation and protection [18:57] and allows the public to have [18:58] access to the park. [19:02] Since the first purchase of [19:03] 400 acres, the park system has [19:07] grown in order preserve and [19:08] protect habitats that are [19:10] representative of santa clara [19:12] valley as well as providing [19:13] recreational opportunities. [19:15] With that growth of now 28 [19:16] parks, over 52,000 acres in [19:19] 1956, the department was [19:21] created in order help managing [19:24] and grow this thriving [19:26] community and provide [19:27] recreational opportunities to [19:28] santa clara valley. [19:30] Santa clara county parks [19:32] provides a wide variety of [19:35] very diverse areas fromies in- [19:38] mountain biking to hiking to [19:42] programming. Programs, school- [19:42] we rovide jr. Ranger programs [19:44] for children. [19:45] We provide lots of [19:46] opportunities for people to [19:47] have different ways to connect [19:49] with nature in our county park [19:52] system through programming, [19:53] through just going out with [19:54] the family and enjoying a [19:55] walk, enjoying a bike ride [19:56] with family members or friends [19:58] and taking the dog for a walk. [20:00] The county parks provides many [20:02] opportunities for people inned [20:03] a vest settings within our [20:04] park system. [20:12] >> building upon this existing [20:13] tremendous resource and legacy [20:14] that we built since the [20:15] beginning of he original [20:17] acquisition of 400 acres [20:19] through community involvement, [20:20] community engagement, the [20:22] department is very focused on [20:23] inclusivity and making sure [20:25] our parks are welcoming to [20:26] everyone. [20:26] We do manage for this and [20:28] future generations, we want to [20:30] make sure that these [20:32] landscapes are protected and [20:32] preserved and allow for [20:34] recreational opportunity force [20:36] future generations to enjoy. [20:39] -- opportunities for future [20:40] generations to enjoy. [20:42] >> the features at santa clara [20:44] county parks -- the future [20:46] looks bright with a lot f [20:48] community support and county [20:50] leadership as well as elected [20:51] officials. [20:51] The system has been able to [20:53] grow and improve over the [20:54] years and into the future, we [20:56] look to see that same growth [20:59] and same expansions so that [21:00] future generations are able to [21:02] enjoy a system that is [21:03] connected throughout the [21:05] valley, creating his web of [21:06] parks and recreation areas [21:08] that are interconnected for [21:10] both habitat, wildlife [21:12] connectivity as well as human [21:14] interaction and being able to [21:15] connect with nature in these [21:16] special places that santa [21:17] clara county parks provides. [21:19] It's been amazing to reflect [21:21] back on the last 100 years in [21:23] this system and really looking [21:25] forward to the next 100 years [21:26] plus of the system and what we [21:28] can provide to the public and [21:30] how we can preserve and [21:31] protect these wonderful [21:33] landscapes into the future. [24:23] It's really about the county [24:25] and as was mentioned [24:27] previously, it's having that [24:29] vision 100 years ago to [24:30] acquire that first land, make [24:32] it available to the public and [24:34] preserve and protect and then [24:35] the gross sense that of course [24:37] we couldn't have an amazing [24:37] system that we have now [24:38] without the support of the [24:41] community, the board f [24:43] supervisors over the 100 years [24:44] and beyond, and county [24:48] leadership. [24:48] They're all coming together to [24:49] create such a system that has [24:50] grown from just this 400 acres [24:54] stevens creek to now over [24:57] 50,000 acres, 28 parks within [24:59] the system, and just a diverse [25:01] not only habitat types and [25:03] really preserving almost every [25:05] habitat and eco type that [25:06] exist in the county, is under [25:09] preservation and protection, [25:10] which is an amazing thing to [25:12] think about for future [25:14] generations, to enjoy. [32:31] He has a tremendous work ethic [32:32] and it's clear that the [32:34] client's health and safety are [32:36] his top priority. [32:38] John is trustworthy in his [32:39] medical assessments and always [32:41] refers to legal and ethical [32:42] standards when making [32:44] decisions. [32:44] He's committed to efficient, [32:46] effective and top quality [32:48] service. [33:44] When a 17-year-old girl went [33:45] missing from her home in [33:46] sarasota last july, detective [33:48] sergeant paula mcalister took [33:51] the reigns of the [33:52] investigation and made sure no [33:53] stone went unturn, no lead [33:55] unfollowed in the search for [33:57] the missing teen. [33:58] Sergeant mcalister, a 23-year [34:00] veteran of the sheriff's [34:00] office and head of the unit [34:02] that handles juvenile matters, [34:04] led a month-long [34:06] investigation, she coordinated [34:08] efforts of several detectives, [34:10] control deputies, allied [34:11] agencies, local task force and [34:14] volunteers search-and-rescue [34:14] teams in an all-out effort to [34:16] locate the girl. [34:17] Dozens of leads and tips [34:18] poured in, and sergeant [34:20] mcalister did the follow-up as [34:23] well as interviews, search [34:24] warrants and investigated [34:25] theories associated with the [34:26] case. [34:27] She was the point of contact [34:27] for concerned family members [34:29] providing updates on the [34:31] investigation as well as [34:32] empathy and compassion for [34:33] distraught relatives. [34:35] While her efforts ultimately [34:37] found the girl, it isn't a [34:39] story with a happy ending. [34:40] Her body was found near her [34:42] crashed car on the roadside [34:44] ravine in the santa cruz [34:46] mountains. [34:46] It wasn't the outcome anyone [34:48] wanted, but sergeant [34:50] mcalister's efforts helped [34:51] bring a sense of closure to [34:53] the girl's family, friends and [34:54] the community. [34:56] Sergeant mcalister's [34:57] diligence, her care and [34:59] compassion coupled with her [35:00] high level of experience [35:04] wanter commodations of [35:10] excellence, thank you, paula.
