1 00:00:09,600 --> 00:00:15,720 It's 530. I'd like to call the meeting to order. Our first item is the Pledge of Allegiance. 2 00:00:15,720 --> 00:00:32,360 I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. 3 00:00:32,360 --> 00:00:36,920 Well, welcome, everyone, to tonight's school board meeting. 4 00:00:36,920 --> 00:00:43,240 Sarah, can you read our mission statement? S3: 5 00:00:43,240 --> 00:00:46,960 Thank you. Next item is approval of the agenda. 6 00:00:46,960 --> 00:00:49,560 So moved. Second. 7 00:00:49,560 --> 00:00:58,600 We have a motion by Jeff and a second by Tim to approve tonight's agenda. 8 00:00:58,600 --> 00:01:09,940 Any additions or corrections? S1: 9 00:01:09,940 --> 00:01:13,660 The agenda is approved. 10 00:01:13,660 --> 00:01:42,620 Next item is our Tiger spotlight. Our student recognitions. Our first one of this school year. Uh, this is our favorite time of the meeting. So how this will work? If you hear your name, I want you to stand so we know who we're talking about. And each board member is going to read a short bio about you. And then when we're done, I got certificates. We're going to meet back there by that martial Tiger banner and take your picture. So we're going to start with Mr. Chapman. 11 00:01:42,620 --> 00:01:45,260 Maybe. 12 00:01:45,260 --> 00:01:48,940 There we go. 13 00:01:48,940 --> 00:02:39,750 I got the pleasure of highlighting Miles Miller, nominated by Mrs. Miles, began this school year ready to be an amazing first grader. He has been excited to learn and has demonstrated strong leadership skills in reading, writing, and math. He is a wonderful role model for his classmates, consistently showing them how to be respectful, responsible, and safe. Miles contributes thoughtfully to classroom discussions and leads by example each day. He loves helping others and is someone we can always depend on. I know this is going to be a fantastic year, Miles. Congratulations. 14 00:02:39,750 --> 00:03:14,410 From Southview. Tiana Zweig nominated by Mrs. Thor. Tiana has a very kind heart. She has been seen already this year inviting others to join in different activities out at recess. She also works hard to do her best in class and is eager to be challenged. She was also recognized as one of our students of the week for showing her tiger traits in and around our school. 15 00:03:14,410 --> 00:04:03,980 Congratulations to you! S3: 16 00:04:03,980 --> 00:04:56,120 And at the high school, we have Musab Sheikh Salah nominated by Miss Skalicky and Miss Maryland. Language arts teacher and social studies teachers Brie Marlin and Bessie Skalicky report that Musab always pays attention in class, wants to do well academically, and works hard to be successful. In addition to his desire to learn, he is generally a nice person who is always willing to volunteer to help other students and is a quiet leader within the classroom. Musab came to Marshall High School midway through his ninth grade year after attending school in Kenya. Musab attended summer school to help catch up on his credits so that he can graduate on time. Because of his great attendance, strong work ethic, and incredible kindness to others. He has been recognized at Marshall High School. September student of the month. Nice job. 17 00:04:56,120 --> 00:05:00,200 Your timing couldn't have been better. 18 00:05:00,200 --> 00:05:02,200 You can have a seat now. 19 00:05:02,200 --> 00:05:47,040 And finally, we have from the a l c Bree Holland. She was nominated by Miss Miss Bass. Brianna has started the year strong. She shows up for class prepared, is attentive and engages in class discussions. Her participation demonstrates curiosity and a desire to do well. She has shown noticeable growth from last year, particularly in her willingness to stay engaged in her learning. Brianna has already established some good habits in the first few weeks. Her positive attitude, constant effort and willingness to contribute has gotten her off to a great start. I look forward to seeing her continue to build on this progress throughout the year. 20 00:05:47,040 --> 00:05:50,810 Congratulations! S1: 21 00:05:50,810 --> 00:06:01,650 And parents. If you want to take pictures during this time, you're welcome to do so as well. 22 00:06:01,650 --> 00:06:06,610 Congratulations. 23 00:06:06,610 --> 00:06:42,730 All right. 24 00:06:42,730 --> 00:06:48,070 Let's give them one more hand. 25 00:06:48,070 --> 00:06:59,470 Parents. You can certainly continue to take pictures, and then you're welcome to stay for the entire meeting if you like. But if you need to duck out, that's fine as well. 26 00:06:59,470 --> 00:08:32,360 Well, they're finishing up. I would like to recognize our school board. September is school board recognition month, and I really want to just take a take a moment to say thank you to these individuals and the time and the effort they give forth to support our schools and our students and the work they do every day. Um, the I'll read the summary that's in the board agenda as well. So during school board Recognition month, our district proudly extends its deepest gratitude to the members of the school board for their unwavering commitment to our students, staff, and community. Serving on a school board requires countless hours of dedication, thoughtful decision making, and steadfast focus on providing the best possible educational opportunities for every learner. Their leadership helps shape the vision, goals, and future of our schools, ensuring that students have the resources and support they need to succeed. We are sincerely thankful for the service, advocacy and partnerships our school board members provide throughout the year. Willingness to listen, collaborate and make difficult decisions reflects a genuine commitment to public education and the well-being of our district. I want to say, you know, we've had, um, a lot of tough decisions this past year. We've had to make. And I really appreciate the support and the, the hard work that you guys all put into that. So a small token of our appreciation. There's a little gift bag with some treats for you and our students. Um, certainly the reason we're all here, it's fun to see that they created some little thank yous that are hanging around the room too. So you can take some time after the meeting to look at those. And if you want to take one home with you, you're welcome to take those home with you. I think there's a few at your spots as well that you can take home and just share and reflect on. I think they're, they're fun to see. So that's those of us in the room. Let's give our board members a thank you too. 27 00:08:32,360 --> 00:08:43,400 Thanks, Jeremy. Being able to recognize outstanding students makes our work really easy and rewarding. So thank you. 28 00:08:43,400 --> 00:08:51,380 Our next item is a public forum. Is there anybody from the public want to approach the board? 29 00:08:51,380 --> 00:08:59,220 Seeing none, we'll move on to our south view, update our presentation. Welcome Mr. Thor. Thank you. 30 00:08:59,220 --> 00:09:13,740 So invited Peter to come in. Peter's been principal at South View for a few years now and going to share with you guys some things going on at South View. Certainly a lot of lot of great things happening every day and some just some few things he's going to choose to highlight today. So thank you. Pete, for being here. 31 00:09:13,740 --> 00:09:35,620 All right. Thank you for having me. Um, I do want to echo the thank you for your time and dedication to our public school system. Um, I'm a pretty proud member of of Marshall and proud, uh, student that went through this district and now have chosen to raise my kids here. So it means a lot to me for your time and dedication. 32 00:09:35,620 --> 00:09:40,420 I did tell Pete that because he had presentations on school board recognition month that he could sing a song like for. 33 00:09:40,420 --> 00:09:42,180 Like. 34 00:09:42,180 --> 00:09:47,150 He thought having the students make some signs would be more. He declined, saying. 35 00:09:47,150 --> 00:09:53,030 I think the last time I sang a song was in high school. So. 36 00:09:53,030 --> 00:13:37,770 Um, I just want to highlight some of the things that we're talking about at Southview this year. And a lot of this comes from my staff, my site leadership team. Um, so I love seeing our kids pictures. And when you walk into our school Southview, there's a bunch of monitors that are just open all the time. Um, and we just flip through continuous pictures of our kids interacting with each other and interacting with our teachers and whatnot. Uh, the things on the board are the things I'm going to talk about really briefly at any point. If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask. We are a bar model school. So remember probably about four years back now, we wrote a grant and was granted, um, a three year training and it's been really meaningful in that it's helped us to really refine what we do. I feel like before that, we had meetings just about every day after school with committees left and right. We had multiple people on multiple committees. That was just duplicating the same work and we just weren't communicating as well. And so through this bar model, we've allowed, we've been able to either combine those or just talk about, hey, what is our main focus? And if it doesn't fit that focus, is it necessary? And so I feel like this has helped us to kind of eliminate some of those other things that we that don't pertain to our goal at Southview. So we do have small block meetings. Those are usually in teams of 2 or 3 teachers. They meet either during their prep or from 315 to 345. They talk about every kid that they see between the teams and and whether they're struggling or not. We talk about positives. First we talk about who who they connect with within our school, and then we come up with a goal for that kid for the year. And we go back and we look at those on a pretty regular basis. Our big blocks, our students, that after going through a small block, if they need some additional supports, we bring in a bigger team. This usually is multi grade level. Today we just had a big block for a fourth grade student, and we had second and third grade teachers there as well. To kind of talk about how things went in the year that they had had them to just talk about supports. We have our school teachers in there. We have our ELL teachers, if they qualify for ELL, our title teachers or so it's just a bigger block, just more supports that that are in place. And then we also have a community connect meeting that happens every Wednesday. And this is one that I'm really proud of. Uh, we've kind of talked about how does that work at Southview so that we can, can support our staff after we've gone through what we have internally. And so our student resource officer comes to that meeting. We have people from the county that deal with truancy within our building that come to that meeting. We have our school nurse. We have all of our school teachers. Uh, we have our, um, greater Minnesota that are in house that will come once a month to talk to us about kids that we, that we share. Um, and then we have somebody from our team, our special education assessment team as well. And so it's just really well rounded. It allows me to kind of keep those high fliers, the kids that we need to just give additional supports that we might not have internally, um, just up on my radar at all times. So I really value that, that once a week meeting. 37 00:13:37,770 --> 00:15:11,390 And then with our grant ending last year, I had a committee, a volunteer committee meet over the summer to talk about what do we want to keep going? And so we came up with these six different committees a bar safety, tiger traits, sunshine, celebrations, parent engagement, and attendance. And what I love about those is that our staff came up with those. And those are the areas that they really wanted to focus on. And then when we met, um, when the teachers came back, it was the staff that volunteered their time. They presented to their own peers and said, hey, let's have everybody pick one of those to join on and, and put in some work. And so now in the past, a lot of these committees, we, some of them were not um, committees that we had in place. But now everybody that comes into Southview. That's a certified staff belongs to some committee, and I feel like I tell my staff all the time, you kind of get what you invest in when you come to school. If you come and you close your door and you work in your classroom, that's what you're going to get out of it. But if you are willing to step out and, and reach out for a greater cause and work with your peers, uh, there's a lot of good that happens. And so I'm really proud of that. Uh, I kind of got the idea from Darcy at Parkside. I know they kind of do committees as well. So that's one thing that we're trying this year. Um, and we'll see how it goes. 38 00:15:11,390 --> 00:18:02,590 This week, uh, we were able to look at some preliminary data and it, it really reinforces what we're doing. Southview. Um, I love looking at cohort data. I love seeing just how we're moving in the right direction. Um, our cohorts are growing by close to 10% from one year to the next. And so we're going in the right direction. We use a lot of different assessments. We use Dibels as second and third. We use the cap D at third and fourth. Um and from those beginning of year assessments, we, we kind of filter our supports through that. Um, obviously our students that have Sped services, those are pulled and then our ELL programing, um, is really pulled from that data as well. So some of our ELL students will get a language intervention, but a lot of them will get like a ufli reading intervention because their needs are that low that we're working with phonics. And so then that's where they're placed. And then from there we have title services. And, and what I'm really proud about is I think of the kids that fell below, um, grade level. Every single kid that was below grade level fell into one of those spots, and we were able to put them into a support spot. And so I'm really thankful for the title program we have and the people that we have in those spots. We also have this reading ready program that just started today. That's a partnership with Smsu. They are providing like, uh, students that are in their junior and senior year. They come in, they do a one on one program with our students. And these kids would would not fit into our title programing. Um, just because we don't have the space. And so we have 16 students, Smsu students that started today working one on one, um, under the direction of our classroom teachers and they're keeping the data for us. Um, and we're going to see how that we're going to track those students and see how much growth they can make with this program. And if it does well, it might be something that we implement internally where we just teach more people, train more people internally with that program. And then our small groups Within our tier one. Within our regular classrooms, we still have close to two hours of reading instruction at second, third, and fourth grade. And so I tell our teachers, our students are young enough that they're not going to be able to just sit there and listen for more than ten minutes at a time. And so we're going to do most of our instruction in a small group setting. So do the overview and then get stations going and pull back. Kids work to where they're at to to show growth. 39 00:18:02,590 --> 00:20:09,340 One. One other thing that we're really focusing on this year is this process for problem solving. Um, I want to thank you guys for allowing us to have an instructional coach within our building. Uh, Sam Downing Fisher has been a huge asset within my building. She has met with numerous teachers. She sits in on small blocks as needed, but in all big blocks. She's at my community Connect. She's our data person. And so when I need data, that's who I go to. Um, this is we talk about tiers and how 80% of our kids should be at the tier one, where they're getting instruction from their classroom teacher. Uh, you know, our model right now, we probably don't have that 80% perfect triangle. We probably have, um, we probably have more kids in tier two and tier three than what we would like. And so that means that we have to train our teachers to, to make sure that our tier one students are getting what they need within the classroom as well. Um, and so it kind of flows. If you look on the chart on the right, uh, we, our teachers came back last year and said, Pete, we really like to just see something that's easy for us to, uh, like a flow chart of some sort. So what happens when a kid struggles in math and reading, or with a behavior or with attendance, whatever that is, we should be able to go through this chart so that we can put interventions in place. Um, what, what is, uh, probably a different mindset that we have all had to learn is that sometimes when you put an intervention in place and it works, we just continue that intervention. And so how do we get that to the next year's teacher so that they know that and they continue that. And so there's just a lot of communication that has to happen. And with our campus, uh, program, we're able to do a lot of that through the changing of our forms and, and just making sure that our teachers are checking on those forms. 40 00:20:09,340 --> 00:22:14,930 Um, my background is in math. When I came to Marshall, I was a secondary math teacher. And so I do look at our math data quite a bit. Um, we do utilize the Excel, um, and we do that fall, winter and spring as well. So all of our kids have gone through the fall assessment. Um, our math blocks mirror our reading blocks. So at third and fourth grade, we have team of teachers. When one class has math, the other has reading. But we do have a built in math wind block. And so those are like what I need times so teachers can work with small groups as well. We do also have assurance of mastery teacher that primarily works with our kids that are well below their peers. And we utilize rocket math for that. Um, one big thing this year is next fall is the first year that we will have to implement our new math standards. And so we've been talking for the last 2 or 3 years about what steps we need to do to make sure that we can be prepared for that. And so some of that comes with professional development. And, uh, it's this week, Wednesday and Thursday, we're going to do a compass training through MDW with the help of the Southwest Co-op. And from that, they will help us kind of create a plan for us like K-12. So we can kind of go through that. Um, our teachers are excited that we're going to implement our pilot, uh, up to three different, um, uh, curriculums, the second, third and fourth quarter of this year as well. So there's a lot of changes. Um, math from what I know, when I went through as a student to when I was teaching to now has changed quite a bit. And so, um, this new set of standards is very much built on problem solving skills and not as much on just memorization of basic facts. 41 00:22:14,930 --> 00:23:39,120 And I would say this picture sums up what we all do. If you look at it, the teachers are surrounding our kids on the perimeter. We have a teacher that is leading an activity. This is a school wide activity. Um, our PBIs team, uh, really talk about how do we build relationships. Barr was all about relationships, building relationships between students and students, students and staff, and then staff and staff as well. And so I tell my staff, if we can't show up and put a smile on our face, our kids aren't either. Um, greeting them when they come to school every day is probably the best part of my day. And so I want to thank you guys for allowing us to do that, for giving us the staff that we have at Southview. I'm pretty blessed to have a really good staff. And like I said, the students that come in, it's about building relationships. So they want to be there. Um, last year we set a goal of 11.2% of our kids, uh, being on a truant truancy list. And we were able to get that goal. That was a pretty big goal for us. Um, but it is really about making sure that every kid has an adult they feel comfortable with. And so I could tell my staff, if nothing else, you're going to make our kids feel loved and that they feel valued. And then everything else will fall in place. 42 00:23:39,120 --> 00:23:40,880 Any questions? 43 00:23:40,880 --> 00:23:44,560 Is that program with SMU an ongoing thing or just. 44 00:23:44,560 --> 00:24:02,800 This is the first time we've had it. And so they actually brought it to us just a couple of weeks ago. And we had to get parent permission slips pretty quickly. Um, first time trying it. I tell my staff all the time, we have to be able to try new things, to see what works and what doesn't work. We can't just keep doing what we're doing. 45 00:24:02,800 --> 00:24:06,040 The college is a great resource. Anytime they offer us help like that. 46 00:24:06,040 --> 00:24:06,760 For sure. 47 00:24:06,760 --> 00:24:09,160 We should take it. So if it works. 48 00:24:09,160 --> 00:24:21,740 This was a grant that they received as my understanding to to cover that. And they got some student teacher candidates that are interested in coming doing it. So yeah, we're excited as well to see how it works, aligns with the work that we're doing and see what kind of data we get from it. 49 00:24:21,740 --> 00:24:25,140 So yeah, so students who are going to school to be teachers. Yeah. 50 00:24:25,140 --> 00:24:27,300 Juniors and seniors. Yep. Yeah. 51 00:24:27,300 --> 00:24:33,660 Yeah. And they get lab hours for coming. And our kids get one on one time with our college kids. What could be better than that? Right? Yeah. Right. 52 00:24:33,660 --> 00:24:35,700 Recruitment for the teachers, for the school district. 53 00:24:35,700 --> 00:24:38,140 That's great. Absolutely. Yeah. 54 00:24:38,140 --> 00:24:45,300 What are you seeing the trend for students coming in with IEPs. Are we is it getting more um, you think. 55 00:24:45,300 --> 00:25:00,220 Probably from when I first started being an administrator, I'd say our percentage is a little bit up. Um, I think at Southview, the last time I checked, we were probably close to about 20% of our kids that have IEPs. 56 00:25:00,220 --> 00:25:07,540 This information from the bar, like when you have a fourth grader that's going to transition to fifth grade, does that get communicated? Yeah. 57 00:25:07,540 --> 00:25:39,230 Okay. So that's one thing that we keep transition documents that go from grade to grade. And then I always tell the instructional coach over here at the middle school that we have those documents. We don't send those over just like, hey, everybody just have at it. But if they have a question and they want to see it or want to know more about it, here's the here's the kids and kind of general idea, and then they can reach out and then somebody from our community contact team will connect with. 58 00:25:39,230 --> 00:25:39,950 Thank you Pete. 59 00:25:39,950 --> 00:25:47,350 Yeah. Thanks. Appreciate it. 60 00:25:47,350 --> 00:25:51,550 Next item is approval of the consent agenda. So moved. 61 00:25:51,550 --> 00:25:53,710 Second. 62 00:25:53,710 --> 00:26:12,210 Motion by Sarah Runchey and a second by Sarah. Was that Sarah? Yes. Okay. Sarah Brink to approve the consent agenda. I will call for the vote. 63 00:26:12,210 --> 00:26:16,490 And that is approved. 64 00:26:16,490 --> 00:26:23,010 Next item is approval of the bills for August of 2026. 65 00:26:23,010 --> 00:26:24,690 Motion to approve. 66 00:26:24,690 --> 00:26:26,050 Second. 67 00:26:26,050 --> 00:26:36,250 Motion by Jeff and a second by Mary to approve the bills for August. 68 00:26:36,250 --> 00:26:44,370 Any further discussion? S1: 69 00:26:44,370 --> 00:26:48,490 And that is approved. 70 00:26:48,490 --> 00:26:53,690 Next item is information our Treasurer's report. Any comments, concerns or. 71 00:26:53,690 --> 00:26:55,810 I wouldn't say much to add at this point. 72 00:26:55,810 --> 00:26:57,250 School year is just getting started right? 73 00:26:57,250 --> 00:27:09,050 We've just gotten started. Our fiscal audit is wrapping up. So they just have a few more walkthroughs to do with individual staff. So I don't think we'll see a lot of movement from prior year to current year. 74 00:27:09,050 --> 00:27:13,940 Thanks, Sarah. 75 00:27:13,940 --> 00:27:20,060 Next item is board updates. 76 00:27:20,060 --> 00:27:20,780 Any reports from the board? S6: 77 00:27:20,780 --> 00:27:22,860 I don't. 78 00:27:22,860 --> 00:27:26,580 Hearing none. 79 00:27:26,580 --> 00:27:29,260 We'll move on to Jeremy's report. 80 00:27:29,260 --> 00:38:51,840 I just want to share a few things going on in the schools. You know, exciting time. Busy time with all the all the new school, all the new school year. Getting going. Um, a few updates from the sites and there's some pictures that Emily helped me put together with, um, each of the reports for this month. So that's kind of fun too. But at Parkside, just want to share. Our youngest learners are off to a great start. So we kind of a staggered start at Parkside. First graders start that first day of school. And during that first week, our kindergartners kindergarten families come in and they get some one on one time with the teachers, do some assessments. So that whole week looks different for our kindergarten staff and kindergartners start that second week. So, um, a lot of transition as some of those kids, it's their first time ever being in school. So some of them come in and transition really well, and some of them are a little bit harder to leave mom and dad and come in for that first day. So there's always some tears, usually more from the parents and from the kids. But, um, that's, it is an exciting time at Parkside for sure at all the schools, but certainly with our, with our youngest, especially coming in and getting going, I want to give our families and staff a big thank you for helping with morning drop offs. Um, that is just a building routine at all the sites especially. But Darcy calls it off in her report. Just a reminder to everyone when you're dropping off. And this is true for all of the schools, but please just stay in the vehicle, pull all the way forward. Um, that's probably where we get if there's a hold up in one of the lines, that's usually what happens is somebody stops early or something like that. So, um, she calls that out. Um, students at Parkside completed their annual bus safety and she's got some pictures of the bus safety in there. So they go out and walk through the bus and talk about safety on there. And I know at Southview and Middle school, we also are talking about crossing safety and crosswalks and that sort of thing too, because certainly an increased awareness we want to bring forward to our students there too. Also at Parkside, we want to mention that the new parent engagement opportunities, something that new they're offering this year, is a Love and logic parent workshop. We currently have 23 parents registered, but if anyone is listening and is interested in participating in that, we still have some room for parents. I believe the childcare slots are filled with that class, but it should be a really good workshop for parents of young, young children. It says Love and Logic is a research based parenting program focused on setting loving limits and helping children develop problem solving skills and responsibilities. So that is a good opportunity that's out there. You can reach out to the number that's listed is 5376767 to register for that at Southview peat covered a lot of the things in his report. Just hit the highlights here. Again, been really working on building those strong systems. That's where we start the year at every at every school, building the the foundation for the year and talking about all of our expectations, he shared the different teams focused on in. Safety. Parent involvement. Attendance. Tiger trait celebration. Staff. Staff. Staff engagement helps get the staff going and builds that base for our kids to have those places in place, those pieces in place. Um, also, the bar framework continues to be a big focus at Southview Middle School and high school. Even though the grant is our implementation grant is up, we're going to keep a lot of those pieces in place. We're defining a lot of benefit at all of our sites with that. And like Pete mentioned in his presentation, it really builds that framework for doing things we've always done and adds some, um, a nice way to structure that where it's, you're not repeating the same thing over and over. And it's a good, good way to carry kids forward and make sure we're meeting all those needs. Um, last thing he mentions is the focus this year is strengthening connections among staff and maintaining the strong emphasis on tiger traits that be respectful, be responsible and be safe. Um, one way we do that at Southview is we do stations. They have a passport. I believe they still do the passport itself. You and they go through and hit different stations on those expectations. So we know that everyone knows the expectation. It's hard to hold a student accountable to meet an expectation if we never take time to teach the expectations. So that's part of that bar work taking place as well. All the sites were completing already wrapping up or beginning of the year assessments. That's our I-ready, Dibels and Capd assessments, and I'll mention it when I get some of the other reports too. But our capture results, that's where we're measuring that reading foundational skills. That's what Dibels is doing for us too, for K through two, K, K through three, we're using Dibels we're finding a lot of growth has taken place with that real intentional focus we've made on meeting individual needs and targeting those interventions to those very specific needs. We're seeing students coming in this year at a much different place than what they started the year last year, looking at at groups of cohorts year over year, middle school, she mentions we had a really good turnout for open House in picture day. We had more than 600 students attend. So a really great turnout there that day. It's simple. At the middle school, they can walk through schedules, meet the teacher, practice locker combination, all those things that really kids are nervous about that first day coming in. Then when they come in the first day, that part is taken care of and it's just see your friends and get to class. So that has worked really well for us, especially with this age group. Middle school is just a it's a tough age. They're not little anymore, but they're not quite big yet. So something that extra support is we're getting transitioned is, is really good. They're, um, new parking lot. We've talked about this a few times, but we've got some very positive feedback that is flowing really well. Um, the new traffic pattern is, you know, a little routine to build for some, but that is that is working really smoothly for us. We did learn on Friday when it was raining at 8:00 in the morning, that a lot more parents are dropping off than they are in a bright sunny day. So that creates a little more backup. We had some backup traffic between Southview and the middle school that morning, but nothing that that we couldn't work through. And I think the processes are in place and it helped to have some good weather days to start the year with. So that continues to work really well for us. Uh, Peggy also mentions the captain read basics assessments that screening or We're identifying students that need additional supports. We're using that to form our groups for this year. That's grades three through 12. We're using that assessment to we had a training today with the cap D trainer and just learning some more about how we can use that to make sure we're interpreting those results and using that to meet student needs. Kindness closet continues to be an operational at the middle school. It's an important resource for students and families. They've had their first open house night with that, where they open it up and families can come in and it continues to be well attended. And we continue to get a lot of families dropping things off and donations happening for that. So we can continue to keep that open. Finally, at the middle school, sixth grade students for September 11th, remembrance, it was a 25th anniversary this year, and our sixth graders went down there to the memorial park. Just a good opportunity to reflect an important moment in our nation's history. It's hard to believe it's been 25 years. And for our kids, that's it is in the history book. It's not something that they remember that day because our kids aren't 25 years old, but, um, it was a good, good, um, program the city put on that day. And it was nice that our sixth graders could attend high school. A lot of things taking place there as well. Um, seniors providing positive feedback on the new MacBook neo devices that has. They are working really well. I was at the high school today and got to talk to a few kids about it. Mr. Thor's daughter included, and they are pretty excited about those. Those new computers. Um, certainly been a nice addition. Staff have noticed increased student engagement following updates to personal electronic device policy. So that's our changes with the cell phones. Um, well the kids are not loving the cases. They are working well. We're seeing a lot more students engaged. We talked about the last board meeting too, but not having the cell phones in class is really a move we needed to make at the high school. Ninth graders are transitioning really well. We have a really great ninth grade class this year. Um, staff are encouraging students to stay on top of assignments and coursework. That transition is going well. Our sophomore classes, the annual career fair at Smsu, is coming up, so we'll be taking all the sophomores over to that. I'm sure Brian will talk more about that in next month's report. Homecoming is just around the corner. I think you saw that homecoming candidates were announced last week. Homecoming is next week, September 28th through October 1st. A lot of events taking place with that, so I encourage our community members and board members to attend some homecoming events and come see support our kids. I know I heard even the powderpuff practice was taking place. The kids are starting their preparations for the things that they think are important for homecoming as well. Um, students at the high school, the ALC and the CTE are participating in mock crash. So this is an event we do once every four years. So every high school kid gets participate once in this, um, big impact event. That's, it's just a lot of collaboration with community resources. We're doing it out at the Lyon County Fairgrounds again. Um, it's, we talk about the dangers of driving impaired and driving through. Um, we do that through partnerships with local emergency responders. So there will be police cars and ambulances. And we brought the helicopter in the past and we can have that available. So all these different agencies are participating in that. We'll bring all the students over there. That is Tuesday, September 29th. Um, board members, if you're interested in participating, you're welcome to come in and see that too. But very impactful session for our kids. And we do schedule that around homecoming time just to make sure we're stressing that being making safe choices for our students at the ALC. Dan shares that we continue to focus on continuous improvement. Last year, we had year one of a compass training looking at comprehensive needs assessment within that program, and he's taking some of those things we learned last year and applying this year and digging a little deeper in the data this year. One of the changes that took place through that work was a new credit recovery course. So each subject core area has a recovery course. So say you failed algebra one or but you didn't. When you look through the gradebook, some students say failed. Maybe a part of that class. They didn't necessarily fail everything within that course. They go back, pick up the pieces that they failed in that course, get the credit for that course, and then be able to move on to the next course. So it's a way to get our students credit recovery at the ALC. We're excited to get that going. Feedback so far was out there the other day to um staff seemed excited about about that opportunity. Just a different way of focusing on it. So each of the teachers is assigned one course during the day. They have a block a day where they're doing a recovery course for whatever course in their department, a student might be missing to get them caught up and then able to take the next level. Parent engagement remains strong. We had 61% of our families attend open House at ALC, so that worked out well. They had a new intake process where Dan is going through and doing a credit check and an audit of the student's transcript, if you will, just to see exactly where they're at and really making sure identifying everything they need to go forward. That was going really well. And he also shares very encouraged by this year's capture results. At that level, we had only six students who scored below the intervention threshold in word recognition decoding, which is where we start the work with the capture results. So last year we had about 15 students, so down to six this year at that site that needed that that level of intervention. So that was very encouraging to see. Activities and athletics. It's hard to keep because this changes daily. But our programs are already making us proud. Tiger volleyball is off to a great start. We recently hosted a 32 Team Southwest Challenge. If you haven't attended that event, that is a busy event that takes place across two different sites. We finish an impressive fourth place out of 32 teams, so it was a very well attended event this year. Um activities Department is also visiting all ninth grade students. Um, they're visiting classrooms and introducing all the opportunities that they have to make sure that students are aware of how to become engaged at the high school. That's something that Mitch and Amber are helping organize. That's going well. Um, he shares Tiger Swimming is hosting the Big South Conference championship in October. That's the first time we've hosted that since we joined the conference. So it's been a lot of years, and we're excited to be able to host that event this year. Just a lot of lot of things taking place. Um, the change to bound has gone well that that transition has gone smoothly and people are getting their passes and such on their, um, he just shouts out a big thank you to students, family, staff and community members for continued support of our schools. Um, creating opportunities, building connections and helping every tiger succeed. So that is what I have for those in operations. I didn't put that one in front of me. 81 00:38:51,840 --> 00:39:18,560 Tricia shares, the food service audit is coming up. That's something we became aware of. So that will happen later in the month. So she and Jill and Shelly are preparing for that. Roofing and facade update. There will be some more things up there, but our construction Pre-bid meeting is scheduled for October 8th, so the bids will be going out and information about that coming out again, that project, we're looking to do a two year project with that starting next summer, so bids will go out as early as this fall. I'll take any. 82 00:39:18,560 --> 00:39:19,920 Food service audit. 83 00:39:19,920 --> 00:39:48,100 No it's not that's not an every year. It's just we were our name was drawn this year. So be good to go through and see where we're at with that. I do think with the fraud investigations taking place in the state, we're seeing more of that type of thing come from MDE than what we've seen in the past, and it's just good for us to review practices. And we're seeing at districts across the state are seeing it in anything where there's federal funding involved coming to the school district. So we'll be prepared. 84 00:39:48,100 --> 00:39:49,420 That's it. Thank you. 85 00:39:49,420 --> 00:39:53,940 Thanks, Jeremy. 86 00:39:53,940 --> 00:40:12,020 Next item is a discussion item. I guess more informational item than discussion, but it's we're going to show a video about the Minnesota Permanent School Fund, which is going to be a ballot initiative in November. Statewide ballot initiative. So take her away. Emily. 87 00:40:12,020 --> 00:41:55,690 Did you know that every Minnesota public school student is part of a public school trust more than 168 years ago, when Minnesota became a state, lands were set aside to create a permanent trust dedicated to one purpose supporting public education for generations of Minnesota students. Today, that promise continues through Minnesota's permanent school fund. Revenue generated from school trust lands is invested, creating a permanent financial resource that helps support public school districts, charter schools and tribal schools throughout Minnesota. Over time, careful management has helped the permanent school fund grow to more than $2.3 billion. This growth has prompted a discussion about how annual distributions from the fund should be calculated. This November, Minnesota voters will be asked to consider a constitutional amendment to update how annual distributions from the existing fund are calculated. The proposal does not create a new fund. It does not change the purpose of the trust, and it does not raise income or property taxes. Recommended. From a nonpartisan task force and with strong bipartisan support from the Minnesota Legislature, the proposed amendment reflects modern trust and endowment management practices and will increase distributions to schools while maintaining the fund for future generations. Learn more about Minnesota's permanent school fund and this fall's constitutional amendment at Minnesota amendment.org. 88 00:41:55,690 --> 00:43:12,580 There's a simple video that the associations have put out. We wanted to share. You're going to see us sharing more of this on our social media accounts over the next month, just to get. We want to make sure people understand what the permanent school fund is. Well, it doesn't generate a lot of funds for the schools. It does generate funds for every school in the state. One of the most common questions that I would say I'm hearing and my colleagues are sharing that they're hearing is, well then where does that money come from? Or does it come that money is sitting in an account that just isn't able to be accessed by school districts right now. So when that's the intended purpose of it and it's based off of financial advisor, you can explain this better than I can, but based off of the interest that's being earned on those accounts and the dividends coming off those accounts, that right now just can't be distributed because of the way the law is written. So this would allow that to come out, but it would never, never deplete the fund to the spot that it would disappear or anything like that. There's plenty of funds to distribute this. So going if the formula would be applied last year to the to the account, it would have been about $80,000 for our district alone. So um, and it will change every year based on what those interest rates and such are looking like, what the dividends look like. But certainly we want to make sure people are informed because on that ballot, not voting for that question counts as a no vote for that ballot. So if people understand, just don't skip that one. 89 00:43:12,580 --> 00:43:42,120 Right? S6: 90 00:43:42,120 --> 00:44:00,840 Get the word out there. I know in the coming weeks, I'll be presenting some local civic groups as well as, you know, very simple presentation, like rotary groups, that sort of thing in town will be getting the information out there and try to share it so people know. So we've got three board meetings between now and Election Day. So we'll be sharing something each board meeting between now and Election Day too. So you guys will be well informed. 91 00:44:00,840 --> 00:44:07,360 Very good. Thanks for that. 92 00:44:07,360 --> 00:44:14,200 Next item is an action item. Approval of the certificate of the preliminary levy. 93 00:44:14,200 --> 00:44:15,320 Motion. 94 00:44:15,320 --> 00:44:17,760 Second. 95 00:44:17,760 --> 00:44:25,840 Jeff. And a second by Sarah. To approve the preliminary levy. 96 00:44:25,840 --> 00:45:02,530 Any discussion? S10: 97 00:45:02,530 --> 00:45:07,490 And the reason we do the maximum is because we can't go any higher than that. But we can approve a lower levy. 98 00:45:07,490 --> 00:45:08,730 Correct. 99 00:45:08,730 --> 00:45:16,370 Just so that's clear. Yep. 100 00:45:16,370 --> 00:45:23,770 Any further discussion or questions? S1: 101 00:45:23,770 --> 00:45:23,770 And that is approved with no other business. I will adjourn the meeting. Thanks, everybody.
