in the morning.
[1:26] That morning, we were dispatched out to
a
[1:29] working structure fire at the apartments
back on Maple Street.
[1:34] Upon arriving,
we had discovered that Terry had made
[1:38] entry into
the apartments and pulled a victim out.
[1:43] This morning,
I talked with our county dispatch.
[1:48] Terry was on scene at 05:59.
The first fire engine arrived at 06:06.
[1:55] 7 minutes.
7 minutes he gave a person.
[2:01] Got her out of the conditions.
That's 7 minutes this morning.
[2:07] She's still alive. She's still with us.
I spoke with the grandson.
[2:12] She is still in the hospital. She is
still trying to recover.
[2:16] But one of the things that that makes me
[2:20] so think that Terry's deserving of this
is because
[2:24] he gave an individual a chance to stop,
to be able to still communicate and talk
[2:30] with their family.
So,
[2:32] I know in the interview with the 812,
you said you're not a hero.
[2:37] We all volunteer to do this, you know.
But your actions that morning were
[2:43] heroic.
Now, the door frame didn't survive.
[2:46] I [laughter] will testify that Terry
Wilson is one heck of a mule kicker.
[2:53] And the building owner was kind of like,
"Holy cow, how do I fix that?" So,
[2:58] the conditions in that apartment that
morning were deadly.
[3:02] They were very, very deadly. High heat,
smoke, visibility was down to zero.
[3:08] How he found her,
where she was located, I have no idea.
[3:12] But he did and he got her out.
When I stepped off the engine that
[3:16] morning and started doing my assessment
of the scene, I walked up to the front
[3:21] door and I seen a frail person covered
in soot
[3:26] on a chair.
Very disoriented,
[3:30] very
confused.
[3:33] And I seen Terry standing there. He's
out of breath.
[3:37] Black smoke and soot on his face. So,
so today we have the honor of having the
[3:42] Indiana State Fire Marshal, Marshal
Jones. Marshal Jones, would you join us

One morning, we was out there trying to
[9:43] find the residence.
Um you know, as the the roads grow, and
[9:47] there was a little gray car parked out
there.
[9:51] And I looked at my engineer and I said,
"Well, what's this idiot doing?" And
[9:54] then all of a sudden, he comes walking
out of the edge of the driveway.
[9:57] We would have never seen the driveway,
you know, cuz you know, the big fire
[10:01] trucks, you're trying not to pull them
in where you can't get them out. But
[10:04] that's something that I do notice about
you and your group.
[10:07] You guys are always at our fires. If
there is an officer on duty, they're at
[10:11] our fires. Now, [snorts] I give them a
lot of flak about being in our way and
[10:15] stuff like that, but it makes our jobs a
lot easier
[10:19] when we can see
the police cars there. They're giving us
[10:24] information, you know. It's It's all
community.

a variety of services um ultimately
[23:04] aimed at helping people maintain their
independence.

not only is that where people prefer to
[23:09] be, but it's also the most
cost-effective form of care when we can
[23:11] take someone in for a few hours a day
or maybe every other day, something like
[23:15] that, in comparison to a 24-hour nursing
facility stay. So, our average care plan
[23:20] is in the $300 range and, you know, the
average month stay in a nursing facility
[23:25] is over $8,500.
Um so, those services are things like
[23:30] home-delivered meals and help with
activities of daily living. So, things
[23:34] like cooking, cleaning, bathing,
transfers, um help with durable medical
[23:38] equipment, home modifications, just lots
of different things
[23:42] that we can help with. Um we also do a
lot of health and wellness programs. We
[23:45] have a guardianship program. We have
congregate meal sites where um folks can
[23:51] go and have a a hot day a hot meal on a
daily basis and we bring in activities
[23:56] and sometimes there's music or sometimes
we bring in um
[24:00] various different community
organizations and things like that to
[24:03] educate folks.
Um and then we also operate
[24:06] Catch-A-Ride, which is a six-county
public transportation service available
[24:10] to anyone for any purpose. Um and we
also have contracts with all of the
[24:15] non-emergent medical transportation
brokers, which means that anyone who
[24:19] needs transportation just to a doctor's
appointment or dialysis or something
[24:22] like that um doesn't have to pay out of
pocket. They can charge that off to
[24:25] their insurance um under Medicaid or
whatever managed care um
[24:30] plan they may be under.
Um so, sorry, I realized I gave you my
[24:35] information there and I didn't have a
copy for myself. So,
[24:38] um
Ripley County's budget is about $1.2
[24:41] million. Our request um is for $1,000,
which is less than less than 1% of that
[24:46] budget. Um what the funding does is it
helps us to uh match a lot of the
[24:52] various funded

[24:56] it just allows us to match uh a variety
of different grants that we have. So,
[25:01] for example, Catch a Ride's
operational grant requires a 100% match.

actually have some Milan specific

Just to give you an idea,
[25:20] we had 64 Milan residents receive case
management services um, over 1,100

[25:36] We had some individuals get caregiver
respite services,
[25:42] over 1,300 home delivered meals. So,
those are just a few just just to let
[25:46] you know specifically Milan residents
are receiving
[25:50] services.
