[1:00:46] Okay, so I created this PowerPoint as one of my stretch goals for stuff that I think [1:00:54] all of these should be aware of and understand. [1:00:58] You might already. [1:01:00] It's always good to hear it more than once. [1:01:02] So I've kind of divided it into four sections, equilibrium, and all that affects river movement [1:01:10] the way that we categorize rivers, stream restoration methods, and then what I do when [1:01:17] I'm out water quality monitoring, they take 15-ish, first one's a little long and the other [1:01:25] two are a little shorter, or the other three are a little shorter. [1:01:28] So I can do one and we can stop or I can do two. [1:01:41] I said we can stop after one, but okay so the most important thing to understand about [1:01:49] a river is that it's always trying to reach equilibrium in terms of sediment transportation. [1:01:54] So equilibrium is achieved when a balance is achieved between the capacity to transport [1:02:00] sediment in the amount of sediment there is to transport. So changes in the amount of water [1:02:06] or sediment in a river will change how the river behaves. The options for these changes are either [1:02:12] deposit sediment, a road sediment, or do nothing. So you need to understand these principles of [1:02:19] equilibrium in order to understand why rivers act the way they do. So points one and two are saying [1:02:25] very similar things. The first one is that channel dimensions are adjusted to the dominant [1:02:30] sediment and water discharge. I'm going to say discharge a lot, and that's just, it's [1:02:36] either the amount of water or sediment, in this case I'll be talking about water. So number [1:02:40] one is essentially saying that the size and regularity of floods will determine the channel dimensions. [1:02:47] Point two is emphasizing that the adjustments that are ever made to a dominant sediment and water [1:02:52] discharge are fairly predictable. They're systematic. The next one is that change from one point [1:02:58] to the next is minimize throughout the river system. Another way of saying that is that [1:03:03] rivers don't like fast changes. They will eliminate them. Next, equilibrium can be maintained while [1:03:09] the channel migrates laterally. In other words, stability does not equal stativeness. And the last [1:03:15] principle is that there is continuity and sediment transport from headwaters to the mouth, [1:03:20] off-flowing water carries sediment. [1:03:23] Okay, so the first principle is that channel dimensions are adjusted [1:03:27] to the dominant sediment and water discharge. [1:03:30] So you have a channel that is formed under a series [1:03:33] of small to moderate discharges, [1:03:35] or to keep things really simple, a hypothetical channel [1:03:38] that is formed under the constant flow of 13CFS. [1:03:41] So if we were to measure the amount of water in the channel [1:03:44] from bank to bank, filled all the way to the top, [1:03:46] it would be 13CFS. [1:03:48] Yes, eventually there will be a large flood, so that channel is going to increase in size [1:03:53] because the extra water can take on more sediment, so it gets pulled from the channel. [1:03:59] However, a flood that a really large flood would be like a 50 or 100 year flood, so those [1:04:04] flows won't be maintained to keep the channel that big. [1:04:08] So eventually the channel will fill back in with sediment until it perfectly holds that [1:04:12] 13 CFS again as long as the base discharge is still 13 CFS. [1:04:17] So, the channel is adjusting to the dominant discharge. [1:04:22] The second principle is that dimensions of a channel change in a systematic way with [1:04:27] fluctuations in discharge. [1:04:29] So, basically rivers all over the world change in expected ways with similar changes in [1:04:34] discharge. [1:04:35] The graph on the left is kind of hard to see, but each line is a river, and these rivers are [1:04:40] from different places, such as Kansas, Wyoming, and Alabama. [1:04:45] On the left is width, depth, and velocity from top to bottom. [1:04:50] The lines are pretty parallel, which tells us that an equivalent increase in discharge, [1:04:55] which is the variable on the x-axis, streams change in the same way. [1:04:59] So if chalk, Greek, and the Mississippi River both receive a 15% increase in discharge, their [1:05:05] dimensions will change in the same way, even though they're very different sizes. [1:05:09] So we can use these patterns to predict how rivers will behave under different surfaces. [1:05:15] Another thing to mention is that urbanization can drastically change stream behavior. [1:05:20] In general, rural streams hold more water at baseline than urban streams, but when there's [1:05:25] a flood, they behave differently. [1:05:27] So urban streams get a huge discharge of water all at once, mostly because everything is [1:05:33] impervious surfaces which is run straight off. Something that can be devastating to the [1:05:40] landscape in a rural setting, but it's so much worse for urban settings because there's [1:05:46] much more infrastructure to damage. A rural stream will typically have more of a floodplain [1:05:51] available so that water doesn't rush down the channel at once and the energy can be dissipated. [1:05:56] And these changes are predictable for urban and rural streams. [1:06:00] Next principle is that change from one point to the next is minimized throughout the river [1:06:05] system. [1:06:06] AKA rivers don't like fast changes. [1:06:09] Any fast change we impose onto a river will have major consequences that we probably [1:06:15] won't find. [1:06:17] Straighten channels and constrictions are probably the most common examples of fast changes. [1:06:23] Rivers of all sizes meander in the same way, the angles and sizes of those meanders are [1:06:28] directly proportional to the size of the stream and the meanders are where sediment deposition [1:06:35] happens. So when we straighten a channel we increase velocity so there's no chance [1:06:41] for water to slow down and drop any sediment. The river will try to reform those meanders [1:06:46] and reach equilibrium again. It just depends on how much water it's going to get to make [1:06:52] make the changes. [1:06:53] What extreme stabilization, is that if you go in and, like, they're going to do on our [1:07:03] place, they're coming in to put all the trees in there, is that a good thing? [1:07:06] Trees are okay, hard, hard stuff like roof rack and rock. [1:07:10] That's why they're in the trees. [1:07:11] Yeah. [1:07:13] It's a really good firewood. [1:07:16] It was. [1:07:17] It won't be wet since it's in the water. [1:07:20] I don't know. [1:07:21] I'm sorry. [1:07:22] It's okay. [1:07:24] If you're unsure if a channel has been straightened, they probably [1:07:27] ask. You can often tell just by looking, but perhaps it has started to reform [1:07:31] meanders and was once straightened. You could check an old map to see, but also if [1:07:37] a river is pressed up against a valley side, it was probably straight in. It's an [1:07:40] municipal area, it's probably straightened. We have affected, I don't know, the [1:07:45] percentage, but probably at least 90% of rivers in America. [1:07:50] Yeah. [1:07:52] Sharp bends are very common when two straight and channels meet, and again, that's something [1:07:56] that the river will try to reform those smooth handers. [1:08:00] So rivers also don't like rapid vertical changes. [1:08:03] Like this slide says, rivers will eventually form a smooth concave profile to minimize changes [1:08:09] in slope. [1:08:10] Obviously, we do see fast vertical changes in nature that would be a waterfall. [1:08:14] So this doesn't mean that rivers are actively trying to eliminate waterfalls. [1:08:19] And this principle is what is dominating the movement of headcuts. [1:08:23] So they move backwards because the river is trying to smooth out the drop. [1:08:27] It obviously can't add sediment to get back up so the only way to smooth the grade out [1:08:31] is to remove this sediment. [1:08:33] So if we use great control structures to deal with the headcut and stop it from moving, it's [1:08:39] important to make sure that the materials are the appropriate size because the river will [1:08:43] not stop trying to remove a head cut just because it's been armored. It's just going to take a larger [1:08:48] flood to make the changes. So the materials need to be large enough to withstand the decent flood. [1:08:54] Rivers also don't like dramatic changes in width. A constriction will result in dynamic changes [1:08:59] on the other side and a great natural example of this is a channel being constricted by bedrock [1:09:05] on both sides that eventually opens up into a wide oluvial fan on the other side of the bedrock. [1:09:13] Constricted channels move faster, so think about how much faster water shoots out of a hose when you put your thumb over it. [1:09:20] This is the same thing. Moving quickly means the stream will pick up sediment without being able to drop it. [1:09:26] So on the other side of the constriction, the river will naturally slow and drop sediment because it's always trying to reach equilibrium. [1:09:33] Another common constriction is an undersized culvert. [1:09:36] For other than maintaining a high speed and having a sudden slowdown, the water already [1:09:41] has somewhere else to go, but it can't fit into the culvert all it wants. [1:09:46] So the slowdown on the upstream side will impact the culvert, oops, on the downstream side. [1:09:52] And I'll talk about that a little bit more later, but just know that culvert is going [1:09:57] to have an impact on river behavior because it's a fast change, any culvert. [1:10:01] The fourth principle is that equilibrium can be maintained while the channel migrates [1:10:07] laterally, or a stable stream is not a static stream. [1:10:11] This is a big one that we as humans have a really hard time. [1:10:15] Everything about sediment transport, everything is about sediment transport. [1:10:19] So a stream can still be an equilibrium even as it's moving back and forth. [1:10:23] The dimensions of a stream in equilibrium will not change as it moves. [1:10:28] So here's a cool graphic I found to really illustrate this principle, which is almost 30 years [1:10:35] of movement, and there is a single bank on this river that doesn't need it, especially [1:10:39] look at that tributary off to the left, it completely changes its course. [1:10:44] Humans expect rivers to stay right where we want them. [1:10:48] That bank was right there when I was a kid, it's just over there as an adult, but we're really [1:10:52] setting ourselves up for failure when we think that way, because if the flood is big enough [1:10:57] the river will always win. They need space to move louder really. That's what a healthy river does. [1:11:03] The last principle states that there's continuity and sediment transport from the headwaters [1:11:08] to the map. Basically, off-loading water carry sediment, so sediment is always moving through the [1:11:13] river system. Okay, so off-loading water carry sediment, and that sediment is in theory, [1:11:19] equally distributed throughout. So that would mean that at a given point of high in the headwaters, [1:11:25] a stream will be carrying the same amount of sediment as a point down by the solid, for example. [1:11:31] The sediment particles are now the same, but the volume of the particles is the same, [1:11:35] if the reversing equilibrium. As with equilibrium, there are also principles of sediment transport. [1:11:42] So capacity is the amount of sediment a stream can transport and load is the amount of sediment [1:11:47] being transported at any given time. Load can be suspended load, which is like when a creek turns [1:11:53] brown during the flood. The dissolve load, which is like the salt minerals and the bed load, [1:12:00] which is what's being moved along the bottom of the stream. So if capacity is greater than [1:12:05] load, there's erosion. If capacity is less than load, there's deposition. If they're equal, [1:12:12] the stream is in equilibrium. So now we'll get into the variables controlling capacity and we'll [1:12:17] use velocity in the proxy for capacity. So the first variable is slope. So a steeper slope means [1:12:23] the river can carry more sediment with the same amount of discharge. That extra sediment [1:12:28] is going to come from the channel bed. These changes in slope can be almost unnoticeable [1:12:34] to us, but result in major channel adjustments. In an urban environment, the only way to [1:12:39] go is usually down. So if there's more discharge because of, say, increased impervious cover, [1:12:45] that river is going to be able to carry more sediment, so it will erode the channel bed. [1:12:50] The end result of this is a decreased slope that can handle the increased discharge without eroding the bed. [1:12:57] So if you have a down cut system and you decide to remedy it by bringing it back up and just filling it full of sediments with even again, [1:13:05] you just increase the slope which gives the river more capacity to carry the sediment away again. [1:13:12] The next variable is area, which specifically means the area of the channel that water is flowing over which could include the floodplain. [1:13:20] So let's go back to the undersized culbert. When the water slows down upstream of the culbert, what is he going to do? [1:13:27] He will drop its sediment because there's no energy to keep it moving. [1:13:31] But the water that does make it through the culbert will be moving quickly because of that hose analogy. [1:13:36] So constrictions decrease area and increase speed. [1:13:40] When it comes out the other side, the water will be moving fast and it will be sediment hungry [1:13:45] from all of the sediment dropped upstream, so what will it do? [1:13:49] It will erode the other side to make up for that lost sediment. [1:13:54] Discharge or how much water is in the system affects capacity [1:13:57] because obviously more water can carry more sediment. [1:14:00] I mentioned this a second ago, but this is why a big flood will cause a lot of erosion. [1:14:05] As the channel gets deeper, the slope decreases, [1:14:07] and as the channel gets wider, the area increases, [1:14:10] which both reduce the capacity to carry sediment. [1:14:13] So it ends up working its way back to the way it was before the flood. [1:14:17] For longer-term discharge increases like with urbanization, the entire bank full channel [1:14:21] may increase in size to accommodate. [1:14:24] Oops, I didn't have that, okay, I thought I forgot all of them. [1:14:28] The last variable, roughness is the most important because it affects capacity more than slope [1:14:33] or stream size changes. [1:14:35] Roughness is the stuff that is in the stream slowing the water down. [1:14:39] The idea of roughness is the whole point behind beavering analogs, right? [1:14:44] Trying to slow the flow. Another thing to note is that a wide shallow channel has [1:14:48] more roughness than a deep narrow channel. And that all works because of roughness. [1:14:59] So why does... [1:15:00] And so much time talking about the principles of equilibrium. Understanding these principles is key for making good restoration projects. So you can establish the underlying causes of the problems, you can identify problem areas, and you can predict how the river will respond to proposed activities before you put them. [1:15:22] Let me know if you want me to continue. [1:15:40] So this is where we talk about the different ways you can classify rivers and how those [1:15:46] classifications can be helpful with choosing restoration projects. [1:15:49] And this one is a little bit interactive, but I have a question for you. [1:15:57] Okay, so I want to start with the caveat that every single river and stream is unique to its own circumstances. [1:16:03] But there are patterns that emerge that we can use to make predictions about stream behavior. [1:16:09] But in seven ways that we classify streams, but I'm only going to talk about six of them, because the other one is super technical [1:16:14] and only useful if you take a bunch of expensive classes. [1:16:16] The first type of classification is whether the bank material is alluvial or non-illuvial. [1:16:23] So alluvial material is material deposited by the river itself, meaning the river can [1:16:28] move freely. [1:16:30] Non-illuvial material is material that is constrifting the river in some way, like bedrock or ripwrap. [1:16:36] It's important to note that these classifications are not necessarily for the entire river or [1:16:42] the entire reach and a single bank can be alluvial or not. [1:16:46] So which of these four banks granted one of them is hard to see, but which of these have a [1:16:50] aluminum material in which I'm not a aluminum kiln. [1:16:55] Right. [1:17:01] Yes, all those signs. [1:17:02] Are there any non-illuvial banks? [1:17:06] There's on the wall on the left that sediment drop in the trees. [1:17:11] Yes, great job. [1:17:13] I mean, this whole valley is that way because everything in the valley at one point was either, was put there by the river. [1:17:19] you know, you go down through the fields and the bottoms and [1:17:22] the gravel and you go out of the rock. [1:17:27] Yeah, open up after another. [1:17:29] Yeah. [1:17:29] The whole valley is that way. [1:17:32] So everything we farm is just what the river put there over the years. [1:17:37] I got a lot of stuff out there. [1:17:39] The example of how a river happened and put in hard line. [1:17:44] The whole city is hard lined all the way through. [1:17:46] going to dumps into ours and it's amazing. It's crazy how much sediment is in there and how [1:17:56] the river moves on a continuous basis. It's hard to keep up going where it's supposed to. [1:18:02] I guess I could dig it out and sell the gravel, but. Because it's carrying so much material in the [1:18:16] they'll start cutting around one side and take all the sediment out and build some [1:18:21] things to you guys. [1:18:26] I mean it's just the way it works. [1:18:30] Okay number two is [1:18:31] landscape elements so those are things like in the picture here, alluvial fans are [1:18:37] the sediment that drops out of a stream after a construction just like I didn't [1:18:40] say but usually better our construction and I couldn't find valley would be [1:18:45] considered a landscape element, as long as the stream's floodplain, any dams or [1:18:49] terraces, etc. So which landscape elements can you see here near the severe? [1:19:06] There's a border there. So where's that probably? The dam. That's going to affect the [1:19:13] river for sure. [1:19:17] Definitely going to constrict it just to be wee bit, [1:19:23] and the water is [1:19:24] getting around fast after it comes out of the dam. We're just doing heroes. [1:19:35] I have a bit about dance also, what about this semi-circle, what do you think that is? [1:19:46] The ears of erosion that's washed out of that canyon. [1:19:49] You're like, right there, what do you want me to say? [1:19:55] The technical term will come. [1:19:59] That's a really good example of it and we'll be okay. [1:20:03] So yeah, all the constrictions on this bedrock and then it just builds out into the blood plane. [1:20:09] And then the floodplain itself is a landscape element and then also had the confined valley. [1:20:20] Okay, Strawler's stream ordering is the idea where the smallest tributaries are first order streams. [1:20:26] And then the two streams of the same order come together, get a higher number. [1:20:29] So two first order streams join form, a second order stream. [1:20:34] The river, river would be like a third and fourth order stream. [1:20:38] Okay, so plain form patterns. [1:20:41] Strings will form these patterns based on the circumstances around them. [1:20:46] So the same stream may take all of these forms at different points. [1:20:49] If you see a particular plain form pattern, there are some assumptions that you can make [1:20:54] about that part of the stream and any hazards that you may face. [1:20:58] So a braided channel will be steep and when I say steep, that's like 1 to 2 percent slope. [1:21:04] So not steep to us, but steep to river. [1:21:05] and they also have high sediment loads. They're very dynamic and they tend to move around [1:21:10] with each flood. So erosion is a major issue for any infrastructure around the Brated Channel. [1:21:16] A beandering plan form will be found on a shower slope because it's the way to keep sediment moving [1:21:21] because the slope is shallow. So like when you're moving slowly on a bike or a skateboard and then you [1:21:27] like rock side to side to pick up speed, this is intense. So meandering streams tend to have more [1:21:33] issues with inundation or flooding, but there is always some erosion on the outside [1:21:37] bends, it's just typically concentrated to one place rather than moving around as [1:21:42] quickly as a braided channel. So which plant form fits the stream on the left? [1:21:50] Out of the two I mentioned, the injury. Yeah, and what about the one on the right? [1:22:01] It's a form of braiding, right? But it's not quite braiding, it was the one to the right of it. [1:22:06] Yeah, braiding or an asthmosing, they're pretty similar. [1:22:10] So this is a proloh river, and that's East Canyon Creek. [1:22:16] Okay, so the next one is channel reach morphology. [1:22:19] This one is kind of eye opening for me in the sense that I didn't really realize that there [1:22:23] was a reason that rivers lived the way they do. [1:22:26] So the five types of channel morphology are cascade, step pool, plainbed, pool ripple, and [1:22:32] doom ripple. [1:22:33] And in that order, they're going from highest up in the watershed to the lowest. [1:22:36] so cascade will have large boulders that cannot be moved and will stick out even [1:22:41] during the flood. Banks are pretty not alluvial at this point. Step pool is where [1:22:46] the rocks are so kind of large but they can be moved and they are moved by the [1:22:50] river in two steps and pools. Plain bed morphology will have rocks and boulders [1:22:55] but those will be completely covered during the flood and it'll typically occur [1:22:59] on a shallower slip than the other two. Pool ripple is a morphology that [1:23:03] alternate between fast-moving ripples and slow-moving pools. This morphology is [1:23:08] really good for cold water fish because they use both the pools and the [1:23:11] ripples for different activities like activities. And then dew ripple will be [1:23:15] slow-moving water that looks like underneath the sand looks like ripples of a [1:23:31] So channel morphology is a generally slope or terrain dependent, like I mentioned the [1:23:36] order I brought them up and the order across the top of this graph is going from steep [1:23:40] riches, shallower slopes from left to right. [1:23:43] So I wanted to go over this graph because it ties in really well with the equilibrium part [1:23:47] of the talk. [1:23:48] So remember that a river's goal, so to speak, is to transport sediment. [1:23:53] So at a steep slope, there isn't an issue with sediment transport. [1:23:56] In fact, the river is trying to reduce sediment transport to make up for that steep slope. [1:24:02] So that's why we see cascade and step pool morphologies. [1:24:05] Those boulders and large rocks are the roughness that keep the water from moving too fast [1:24:10] and carrying too much sediment away. [1:24:13] you can see on the graph that transport capacity is very high and the sediment [1:24:17] supply is very low. As the sediment supply increases, rivers smooth out into [1:24:23] the pool ripple or dune ripple morphologies to be able to continue to move [1:24:27] this sediment. That's why these morphologies don't have as many rocks. It doesn't [1:24:32] need roughness to limit sediment transport. This slope is what's limiting [1:24:35] sediment transport. So really important thing to bring up here is that there are [1:24:40] reasons that channel morphologies occur in different places. So you can't impose a step pool [1:24:45] morphology with like weirs or rock veins on a low gradient stream because that stream is slow [1:24:51] and be andering and it will not be funneled through the center as intended. The flow will probably be [1:24:56] deflected by the vein and sent into the bank causing more erosion. [1:25:02] So the last type is using channel [1:25:04] the channel evolution model to classify a stream. So I wanted to give you a good picture of that model. [1:25:09] Basically, we have a channel, maybe that 13 CFS channel that I mentioned earlier, and if [1:25:15] we have a flood or some kind of major disturbance like straightening, the stream will first [1:25:20] incise downward. [1:25:22] Eventually, this incise channel will be completely disconnected from the floodplain, where [1:25:26] a carrying vegetation will die because there won't be enough moisture. [1:25:30] The lack of vegetation will create weak banks. [1:25:33] With more floods, those will fall in, and the stream will then become wider, and it will continue [1:25:38] to widen as long as there is a flood big enough to warrant it. However, we will eventually reach [1:25:43] the point where we get a massive flood that occurs very infrequently and without constant pressure [1:25:48] to keep the banks that wide, we're preparing a vegetation move back into this widened channel [1:25:53] because it isn't wet all the time anymore and rebuild to be a sediment deposition. A new channel will [1:26:00] form that matches the original channel but at a lower elevation. [1:26:06] You know the channel like through us [1:26:09] It's so wide from like the floods and like now it's been so long since we've had a lot of water [1:26:15] That they're growing in so when you do which we will have high water [1:26:20] Then the channel was like full of [1:26:28] Floods yeah, I mean, but it's gonna find the path of least resistance if all this stuff that's growing in there [1:26:40] It's not the river no more and it deposits, you know, that's why we have gravel spots out in our fields and stuff. I mean, if you left it alone, it would fill this channel up and move right over. But we don't let it do that anymore. [1:26:58] Yeah. [1:26:58] You know, we make it stay where it's supposed to be, or where do you want it to be? [1:27:07] But it doesn't necessarily work all the time. [1:27:09] No, no, you get it flooded like in, you know, way three in that. [1:27:13] You just, it does whatever it wants. [1:27:15] Yeah, when you can't find a river. [1:27:17] Because it's all three feet water. [1:27:20] But I mean, the channel, like down through us, I mean, it's kind of big channel over the years. [1:27:25] But it's, you know, like, yeah, it's got trees growing, big trees growing in it now. [1:27:31] Back in it. [1:27:31] And it either, you know, takes them out and then it goes down and plugs things up. [1:27:37] Did they go through this? [1:27:40] You've been watching the stream channel evolution model here in my life. [1:27:44] Yeah. [1:27:46] And it might hit his whole life. [1:27:48] Yeah. [1:27:48] We tried it. [1:27:49] We tried to control it. [1:27:50] But if you could control it when you get a flood like that. [1:27:53] nature is okay to keep things interesting most of these rules don't apply to [1:28:00] highly managed rivers and that's because of the nature of what they are [1:28:04] heavily managed rivers can't act naturally because the environment is no [1:28:07] longer natural so what's different we call systems like these those that are [1:28:12] damned tailwater systems tailwater systems so prime example of this would be the [1:28:18] river the weaver river between rock port and echo and they're called tailwater [1:28:23] systems because they essentially leave the tail water of the dam. So what do we know about what [1:28:28] happens at the upstream end of a dam? It fills a sediment. But what kind of dams do we have around here? [1:28:37] I've learned from the summit C.D. that the dams actually spill over and they have water coming out [1:28:44] underneath. I thought they were just spill over dams. [1:28:49] So if we're talking about hypothetically where [1:28:51] water goes over the spillway. Do you think that water at the top of the reservoir has [1:28:55] much sediment in it? Probably not. So what would we expect to happen on the other side [1:29:00] of the dam? We would expect scour. And that probably was scour of smaller sediment at one [1:29:05] point in time, but it's long gone now because the downstream end of the dams are heavily [1:29:11] honored and they'll never receive enough water to move boulders that day because they're [1:29:15] completely managed. So the weaver in this reaches essentially only being fed sediment by its [1:29:20] tributaries rather than the natural flow of the river itself. So what else is [1:29:26] different? Timing of water. So instead of spring runoff we get irrigation runoff, [1:29:32] not saying that's good or bad but it's different than what's natural. [1:29:36] But the benefit of being managed is if you have the right water manager, it should have [1:29:43] consistent water throughout the year. Another minor thing is that the spillway [1:29:47] dams are spilling over the warmest water so that can potentially contribute to [1:29:52] temperature impairments, low dams. [1:29:55] Hey, the last thing that even the water... [1:30:00] Coming out of the bottom of the dam, I mean, would not have the same sediment in it as if it was just flowing through. I mean, it's going to drop sediment. I guess it really depends on how much they fluctuate it up and down. But it's going to drop sediment. Let's hear what you're talking about. Yeah. [1:30:19] Well, most of the sediment would look at echo reservoir. The sediment all stays at the top of the reservoir because as soon as it hits the water, the water slows down. Yeah. [1:30:29] And so it drops it. It's all up there. There's no [1:30:32] Sediment doesn't move halfway down the brisket or I bet that I [1:30:35] Bet that hasn't the bottom of halfway down [1:30:39] I bet that hasn't changed since they put the damn yeah, but the tops have sure has need to be dredge [1:30:46] You want that job [1:30:51] Just drain it like you're gonna be playing you huh. Yeah, it's gonna be great [1:31:01] Okay, this is the last slide before part three. [1:31:06] So I just wanted to bring up these five key ideas again as my advisor in grad school told [1:31:13] me anything important. [1:31:14] He said to put on my bathroom here and look at it every single day. [1:31:17] So why don't you put these on your bathroom here? [1:31:21] Everyone, look at the river in broad scale, not just what's right in front of you if you're [1:31:26] standing there. [1:31:27] Rivers don't life fast changes. They will eliminate them. Off-loan water carries [1:31:32] sediment. Stability does not equal static-ness and don't forget about [1:31:37] ripeness. [1:31:39] That concludes part two. [1:35:52] I mean, especially us because we're like right below the diversion there, so we have no water. [1:35:58] And then all of a sudden you have... [1:36:01] Luckily they do call me and say, you're gonna get flooded. [1:36:07] That just washes the channel out all the moss that's been growing just comes down on everything. [1:36:17] But they say that this year when they treated the canal the first time it was like a month [1:36:25] earlier than they did a year ago and the water temperature was 10 degrees warmer than a year [1:36:31] ago.
