And also, just share with you how beneficial it has been for several of us on our Buchanan team to have been able to attend some of the national PLC conferences. And so I just want to talk a little bit about PLCs and what that means. And then I'll let these two ladies just share some of their takeaways from the conferences. [0:28] So one of the things that I think has, I think we've been using the PLC process, [0:34] professional learning communities, probably at least 20 years in the peer school district. [0:39] It's been almost since I, I think one of the first years that I was teaching here is [0:44] when we began that process, and really I think one of the key things is that it's more than [0:50] just a scheduled time. [0:55] It is really kind of about how, how do we do things? [0:57] How do we do things around here? [0:59] What are we doing to benefit our kids? [1:01] How are we making sure that our kids are being successful [1:06] and reaching that potential that they have? [1:09] That focus is always really on the student learning. [1:13] One of the things that you can and pride ourselves on [1:16] is that our kids are all of our kids. [1:20] And so having that collective efficacy [1:22] where we are all working together for all of our kids, [1:26] I think really shows in the successes that our kids have and the successes that our [1:32] teachers have in the classroom as well. [1:35] The four main questions that the PLC process always asks of us, and these are questions [1:40] that we are continually asking of ourselves in our meetings that we're having together [1:45] whether it be our building leadership team meetings or those common planning times that [1:50] our teachers have built in, but what do we want our students to learn? [1:54] and how are we going to know if they've learned it? [1:57] What are we going to do if they haven't learned it yet? [2:00] And what are we going to do if they already know it? [2:02] Because we want to also keep pushing those kids [2:04] and enriching all of them. [2:07] So, and like I said, one of the real benefits, [2:10] I think that our district has, [2:12] is that we have been willing and able to send teams [2:15] of teachers to those national conferences. [2:20] I was happy to attend with Andrea [2:23] in a group of four of us, yeah, who went to Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona, we got to go and [2:32] it was like negative 37,000 degrees in here. [2:36] And it was a nice sunny 70 in Arizona, but we went together with the team and not only [2:44] is it such a benefit to be hearing from those national speakers who are so invested in [2:51] that process, but the time and the collaboration that you have together following that, when [2:57] you are going out D, or don't tell me, don't have Andrea tell you about our electric [3:02] bike ride, but that time that we have together outside of the conference itself and the business [3:10] is also just so, so worth, worthwhile. [3:13] And then, Leslie, I know went with a team just this past summer to Las Vegas, so they didn't [3:19] I mean, what happens and then I guess it takes other than what she's going to share about. [3:25] But again, I think, you know, we just are able to learn so much and talked about the [3:30] benefits of having multiple staff members who are able to attend to bring back that information. [3:36] But I'll let these ladies share some of what they've taken away from the conference. [3:41] Thank you. [3:42] Yes, we are just really excited to have the opportunity to go with different teams. [3:45] and I think it's important that each grade level [3:49] and department gets a representation each year [3:51] to get those opportunities because like she said, [3:55] the national speakers really refresh that idea [4:00] of how we need to be world-class educators [4:03] and have the top of the top expectations [4:07] and always striving to achieve with our students. [4:10] And so it's really cool how they have the big breakouts [4:13] but then they also have all these amazing, [4:14] or the big key notes, but then all the little breakouts [4:17] that are wonderful, so I got to hear great sessions [4:20] on effective feedback for kids about how our buildings [4:25] could have collective commitments [4:26] that we're all on board for. [4:28] One of the things that kind of stuck in my mind [4:30] was the difference between climate and culture. [4:34] So a lot of times we're always saying, [4:35] oh, we have a great climate. [4:37] We're all smiling and happy and friendly. [4:38] Well, that's how we feel, but to have a positive culture, [4:42] It's how we're rebehaving. [4:44] How are we taking steps to actively make best use of our time and instruction. [4:52] So yeah, just kind of a refresher on impactful leadership. [4:59] So I could take that back to my fourth grade team and my building and just remembering that [5:04] PLC is never ending. [5:06] It's always a continuous stamina we've got to keep up. [5:10] So [5:13] I think one of my big takeaways was that they really talked about teacher health. [5:22] Like if you don't have healthy teachers, you aren't going to have healthy learners. [5:28] And I think that was a big takeaway because we are seeing more mental health issues, more burnout, more, we all know behavior is increasing. [5:36] And it was just nice to hear that, that is recognized on, you know, such a big platform and such, at such a national, at a national level. [5:50] You know, they had, you know, they had some good ideas, you know, on helping that. [5:57] That another thing that I took away was that not only do we have social behaviors, but you have academic behaviors, you have that metacognition, you have, you know, so, and we just kind of take for granted that behavior is already learned once they come into our buildings. [6:22] and sometimes, I mean, we are teaching children how to sit and what listening looks like and [6:33] what, you know, an appropriate response to an adult is and, you know, we have to teach [6:40] those things before we can teach ABC123. So just keeping in mind that, you know, we all [6:48] know that kids don't start at the same point, but our collective goal is to all get them [6:56] to make gains. [6:57] I [7:00] just want to re-emphasize again, thank you Andrea and Leslie for sharing those things [7:05] but re-emphasize again how impactful it is for us to be able to attend. [7:12] So I thank the Board for providing us the opportunities and thank our district administration [7:17] for allowing us the opportunities to continue our learning [7:21] because like we know teachers, we are continuous learning, [7:25] never stopping learning. [7:27] And I love what I remember now if it was Andrea or Leslie said, [7:32] but about how the work for our PLCs has never finished. [7:36] Just like our improvement plans, they're continuous. [7:40] We're always looking at ways that we can grow and be better [7:43] and that's the same with our PLCs. [7:46] We continue to refine and our practices. [7:49] We aren't trying to just do PLC. [7:52] We want it to be that culture of that continuous improvement. [7:56] And again, the conference and the learning, when we're there, it doesn't just stay there. [8:01] That ripple effect when we come back and we share with others and the excitement, of course, [8:06] of being able to travel to something even on an airplane, you know, they might have snacks [8:12] on there. [8:13] but you know to be able to travel to places that some of us wouldn't get to [8:18] otherwise and then to do it with our friends and our colleagues is just a [8:23] joy. So thank you for those opportunities. Do you have any questions for us on [8:28] PLCs or the conferences that we've attended? Thank you for sharing and hopefully we [8:35] can try and work in the schedule to go in the winter time to those warm places [8:38] is a nut in the summer. Exactly. We have to go to pool. I think some of them went in February. [8:49] Thank you again. All right. We're going to move on to item number three. We do have a change [8:58] in the agenda. Dr. DeBoer, did you want to talk about that? Sure. We're going to change the 16th [9:07] it was going to be to approve and accept the resignations and then 17 will be to adjourn. [9:13] So just add that at the bottom. [9:17] And we do need a motion to adopt the agenda and the change to the agenda. [9:24] Motion? [9:26] Do we have a second? [9:31] Do we have a second? [9:31] A second. [9:32] We have a motion and a second, any questions? [9:36] Okay, without hearing none, all those in favor say aye. [9:39] All those opposed nay? Motion carried. [9:46] Item number four, the consent calendar. These are items that were presented to board members prior to our meeting that we may review and ask questions. [9:56] And this two is a action item. Do we have a motion? [10:02] We have a motion to approve, [10:06] do we have a second? [10:08] Second. [10:10] All right. [10:11] We have a motion in a second. [10:12] Any questions? [10:15] All those in favor say aye. [10:17] Aye. [10:18] All those opposed say nay. [10:20] Motion carried. [10:22] Item number five. [10:24] I'll turn this over to Dr. DeBor for superintendent comments. [10:28] Okay, so a few things. [10:30] Homecoming coming up next week. [10:33] And just for you all, from, I'm really encouraged by the way the school year started. [10:38] We have such an outstanding group of teachers in our school district, outstanding group of [10:45] administrators that really just pull on the same side of the rope in the direction for [10:49] what Brian and Moser put together for Friday night 9-11 was amazing. [10:54] I think was even going to be bigger, but apparently my grounds couldn't pull strength for us. [11:00] But yeah, just those types of things that I see all over the district. [11:04] My plan for you guys is just after my first 100 days, I'll be able to give you a pretty [11:09] detailed report of what I'm seeing and what I've seen. [11:12] I'll do that at the November board meeting, so stay tuned for that. [11:18] I'll be at SASD Leadership Retreat later on this week, so you guys know what I was elected [11:26] as the incoming president for SDSSA, so that's a superintendent's group. [11:29] So incoming this year, President, next year, [11:31] press, President, the year after. [11:32] So being involved in some of those things moving up. [11:36] At the next meeting in October, I will, [11:40] we're going to have a presentation from Mike Mueller [11:42] and Nariah Steber that are going to talk to us [11:44] a little bit about an opportunity [11:46] that we could participate in. [11:49] It's a bike pump track. [11:51] They've got a lot of details to kind of show you [11:52] that I've visited with a couple of PE teachers [11:54] to see if they'd be interested in partnering [11:56] and kind of depends on what the finances look like [11:59] and where we want to go with that. [12:02] But we did meet with them as a small group. [12:04] It was Jess and Randy. [12:09] And after I talked to the PA teachers, [12:11] we thought, well, we'll have them visit with the whole board. [12:13] So they'll come in October and present [12:15] to the whole board on that. [12:19] At our last SAC meeting with our administrative and directors, [12:22] we did a little work on taking a look at our district goals. [12:28] That was, you know, something we've been working forward or working through in the last few [12:33] months. [12:34] A little bit, timing was a little off as far as a retreat. [12:37] I think it was always usually done in May, but as I came on board, we waited to August. [12:40] So we did a little work there. [12:42] My plan for the next month then is to take those goals that we've kind of visited about, [12:46] try to develop our own action steps and some measurable outcomes and see if we can't present [12:52] something to you guys in the, for the October board meeting, for what we've come up with. [12:56] then you guys as a board can either have additions or approve what we've done [13:02] Kind of depends on we're just gonna keep working that as a group and be able to present something for you guys [13:06] For the goals for this year, so stay tuned on that. [13:13] Oh [13:13] This week you're going to see some AI surveys come out [13:19] Brian Lynn and I met last week talked a little bit about what this AI [13:24] My process would look at, I don't know if we're looking at a policy but really looking more at like standard operating procedures and where we want to go with the district, we've elected to start with a small committee, building principals, Mr. [13:40] Wevey, Brian and myself, but we wanted to get some information first so you'll see some surveys coming out for parents, also staff will get one and students with middle school and high school students. [13:52] So at least it'll give us a little information before we get rolling on what we want this AI to kind of look like. [13:58] Brian's done a lot of work on that. So thank you, Brian, for that. [14:03] And then last but not least, don't let me forget anything, Mr. Hanson. [14:06] But we've got obviously our project going on at rigs. [14:10] So just a shout out to all the people listening in the community beginning Monday, [14:17] which is the 14th today. [14:20] Trucks and equipment materials at rigs are going to be increasing as they're bringing precast walls in. [14:26] It's going to cause some traffic issues. [14:30] Deliveries are going to be using Washington crossing to the rigs parking lot on Broadway daily for about a month. [14:36] So that Washington Broadway intersection is going to be a little full. [14:41] Big pieces of concrete is basically what they're bringing in. [14:44] And so that's going to be, is it morning, noon and night, or is it just kind of, okay, [14:54] so starts at 8 a.m. [15:02] So, I would say, if you know the streets in here, which I'm still trying to get used to, because they all kind of zigzag around, but take a different route, if you can, because that's going to be pretty full. So expect slower traffic south of the high school and just use caution when you're driving through there, because there's going to be some machineries of people. So, again, Washington and Broadway, south of the high school, basically the next month, they're going to be bringing stuff in. [15:29] so. Method to the madness. Method to the madness. [15:34] The chance into the cover it. All right. [15:37] Thank you. [15:38] I think that's all I have. [15:42] Get all that Travis. [15:44] All right. All right. [15:48] Thank you for those updates, Dr. Debord. [15:52] Item number six board comments. Any board members have anything today? [15:58] All right. [15:59] We'll move on to item number seven, Riggs Student Senate. [16:03] I believe we have a few young ladies here. [16:09] Oh, how's it going? [16:10] Good. [16:11] Good. [16:12] Good. [16:12] My name is Marissa Vazquez. [16:14] I am the junior secretary. [16:19] I'm Erin Wacher. [16:20] I'm a junior member of the Student Council Senate. [16:22] And we're just going to be talking about how homecoming is going to be going since that's been [16:25] our main focus since starting. [16:28] So our theme this year is game on, just board games. [16:32] So for Monday, it's Twister, class color. [16:35] And then following at 7 p.m. is coronation, [16:38] where the king and queen will be announced. [16:43] Right after that, it's the burning of the letters. [16:45] I believe. [16:45] And then Fingo, which there will be prizes, popcorn, [16:51] and drinks for all nine through 12 graders to enjoy. [16:54] And then on Tuesday, there are shoots and ladders. [16:56] this is personally my favorite dress-up theme. You can dress up as a younger picture of yourself [17:01] and then have that picture in front of you and then that day is also the parade at 6.30. [17:07] And then Wednesday, Wednesday is jumanji so you get to dress up safari, have some camo, maybe some [17:13] animal print. I think that's a lot of fun. And then Thursday is life like the game of life. [17:25] So [17:26] seniors or old people, elderly, and then the teachers are teenagers so that'll also be a lot of fun to see how that goes. [17:34] And then Friday, our most busy day for homecoming. [17:37] We have to half day, and then afterwards there's Olympics. [17:40] So our whole class, like members from each class are chosen to compete in activities and it's a whole lot of fun [17:44] because the whole school or most of the school gets to compete and it's just a whole lot of fun. [17:49] And then right after that is Powderpuff, which is juniors versus seniors. [17:52] I think we'll win this year. [17:54] I think we'll fight for it. [17:55] And then football game, obviously, will be a lot of fun. [17:58] Show up with your fear of pride. [17:59] And then after that, as a cornhole tournament, [18:01] so we'll go back to the high school. [18:03] And late at night, and we'll order pizza, play games, [18:06] win prizes, it's a whole, yeah. [18:09] That's basically our week for homecoming. [18:11] Any questions? [18:13] Sounds like you guys have a lot planned. [18:15] You might have to show up at the school on Thursday [18:17] and see what everybody's dressed up at, even the teachers. [18:21] Well, thank you, girls. [18:24] Thank you. [18:27] All right, moving on, item number 8, the public comments, I don't believe that we've [18:34] been notified of any, so we are going to move on to item number 9, conflicts of interest. [18:40] There again, we have not been notified of any to report tonight. [18:46] Item number 10, donations, I'm going to have Travis talk about this a little bit. [18:51] Thank you, Jess. [18:52] Yes, several donations have came in since their last board meeting for the board's consideration this evening. [18:58] Kerry Bauman was State Farm Agency $400 in support of the all-teacher in service that was held back in August. [19:05] The inventory trading company donated $185 to the Football Activity Fund. [19:11] The Riggs Fine Arts Booster Club donated $1,490 for middle school marching band polos. [19:18] And those funds were matched with some other donations that the middle school had received. [19:24] The Vera St. Mary's Foundation, young endowment, $1,500 to the volleyball activity fund. [19:31] And this following list here are donations to the rigs marching band activity fund. [19:38] Poplar's music store, $500, Jennifer Larson, $20, Kyle and Christy Potter, $40, Kelly and [19:45] Fred Vassel, $50, Barry and Kathleen Monroe, $100, Laura Melhoff, $50, Paul Melhoff, $40, [19:53] J.R. and AM Melhoff, $100, and J. McElson, $400, all those for the rig's marching band. [20:01] Pure Softball Club, donation of $768 to Softball Activity Fund, [20:07] the Kim Byrill Memorial Fund and Family, donated $7,500 to rigs to support student needs, [20:13] And then the last one on the list you're tonight is the Boys and Girls Club of the capital area of $5,000 donation and this donation is being made in visa gift cards directly to the building principles to support student needs as those arise. [20:30] With that, I would recommend approval. [20:33] Motion to approve. [20:35] All right. We have a motion and a second. Are there any questions without hearing none? [20:42] All those in favor say aye. All those opposed. Nay. Motion carry. [20:49] All right. Moving on [20:50] to item number 11. Contracts, Dr. DeBourg. You'll see on there that we have three contracts. [20:55] Those are volunteer coaching positions. So my recommendation will be to approve. Approval. [21:01] Second. [21:01] second. We have a motion to approve in a second any questions right all those in [21:08] favor say aye all those oppose name motion carried item number 12 amended [21:17] contracts Dr. DeBoard so the amendments are lane changes or changes to [21:22] assignments again I would recommend to approve those amended contracts okay we'll [21:27] We have a motion in a second. Any questions? [21:34] Hearing none. All those in favor say aye. [21:37] All those opposed? Say nay. Motion carried. [21:43] Item 13, administrative rule waiver 24430801. [21:49] So this is a waiver for a long term sub in the middle school. [21:53] I think you guys have done these in the past. It's just a little longer than what. [21:56] but that longer than what we had anticipated [22:00] so we need a waiver for this. [22:03] Wonderful. [22:04] Do we have a motion for an approval? [22:05] Motion to approve. [22:08] Second? [22:09] We have a motion in a second. [22:11] Any questions? [22:13] All those in favor? [22:15] Aye. [22:16] Aye. [22:17] All those opposed respond with nay. [22:19] Motion carried. [22:22] Item 14, out of district, open enrollments. [22:25] Dr. Dvor. [22:26] Okay, so all of the open enrollments on the list, I would recommend to approve 32, 2627-33, through 32, 36, or 2627-40, with the exception, you see that dash 36 has been crossed out, they've changed their mind, so the rest of them, I would say, I would recommend to approve. [22:49] I think this also is an action item. [22:54] Do we have a motion for approval? [22:56] If, approval, it's the second. [22:58] Motion and a second, any questions? [23:02] Without carry none, all those in favor, say aye. [23:06] Aye. [23:07] All those who oppose, nay. [23:09] Motion carried. [23:11] Item number 15, sir, plus property, Travis. [23:15] Thank you, Jess. [23:17] So this fall we're preparing for kind of the annual school rummage sale, if you will, that will be held September 29th at the maintenance building, which is on the southwest corner of the rigs campus. [23:28] So you have the full list of items in your board packet there. These are mostly items that have come out of classrooms out of the buildings over the summer months that there haven't been able to be repurposed and are filling up. [23:40] So there's some school desks, an office desk, bookshelves, easels, bulletin board, and [23:48] VCRs if anybody's still interested in one of those, but quite a bit of stuff and VCR. [23:54] I think there's also some items in there that didn't sell last year that would still be offered [23:59] for sale. So tell your friends, come on down Tuesday, September 29th at 8 a.m., and buy some [24:05] school surplus, but I just recently moved three [24:07] tubs of VCR tapes, so if anybody would like the VCRs, [24:12] I'll write the out sentence. [24:14] All right, awesome. [24:16] This is great. [24:17] Thank you, Travis. [24:19] All right, this is an action item for the surplus property. [24:23] Do we have a motion? [24:24] Motion to a group. [24:26] Is there a second? [24:27] Second. [24:28] Right, we have a motion in a second. [24:29] Any questions? [24:31] With hearing none, all those in favor say aye. [24:34] Aye. [24:34] All those opposed respond with nay motion carried [24:39] So item number 16 we have resignations doctor to four. Yeah, so we had a coach that had a personal family thing come up and [24:48] needs a resident to [24:50] Resign from that position effective immediately my recommendation would be to approve that resident [24:55] Resonation do we have a motion for this [25:01] All right. We have a motion in a second. Are there any questions? [25:07] All right. Without hearing none, all those in favor say aye. [25:10] Aye. All those opposed respond with nay. [25:13] Motion carried. Item 17 adjournment. [25:20] Do we have a motion to adjourn? [25:23] Motion. And a second. [25:28] All right. We have a motion in a second to adjourn. Any questions? All those in favor say aye. [25:35] All those opposed say nay. Motion carried.
