silence for um a former teacher and
[0:16] baseball coach um Fred Brown. He gave
decades of contributions to families and
[0:22] students of Rockland. So we'll just have
a couple of seconds for Mr. Brown.
[0:35] Thank you. And we appreciate all of his
contributions to us over the years. Um,
[0:40] we'll move on to the pledge of
allegiance.

update with Jen.
[1:10] » Sure. Thank you so much. So, it will be
quick, but I think uh I think you'll be
[1:14] pleased and everyone that's watching at
home will be pleased as well to see we
[1:18] have kicked off the year with some uh
important professional development
[1:22] opportunities. Overall for the district,
we have been focusing on for general
[1:27] education and our par profofessionals u
the multi-tered system of supports. So
[1:32] that's really looking at what do we need
to do at tier one what's happening right
[1:36] within the classroom each and every day
tier tier two for some of our kiddos
[1:40] that might need a little bit of extra
support and then tier three for some
[1:44] extensive support that might be needed.
So, we've started off by talking about
[1:48] that and we have it scheduled out
throughout the year for different
[1:51] opportunities. Uh, special education,
all of our special education staff came
[1:56] together, our teaching staff and our rel
related service providers to work with
[2:01] um Alan Bloom is the gentleman's name
and uh Mr. Plume has a whole methodology
[2:08] to create goals and benchmark for our
benchmarks for our IEPs that really will
[2:14] help streamline the process and really
help us dig in deeper making sure that
[2:18] we have the data that's needed to look
at are we achieving those goals and the
[2:22] benchmarks within a period of time that
we want to be successful with. Do we
[2:25] need to tweak things? And that also has
been spread out through the entire year
[2:29] and he will be coming back for some
follow-up professional development. And
[2:33] then paraprofessionals and our mobile RV
van drivers, we have decided that they
[2:38] are going to be working together um on a
professional development module on
[2:43] attention deficit hyperactivity
disorders um and supporting students
[2:48] varied varied needs that may fall within
that um that area of ADHD. And then when
[2:55] we look at the different things that are
happening across our buildings, I'm not
[2:58] going to read each one, but it's a recap
of all the different grants and the
[3:01] spectacular happening happenings that
you uh we talked about a little bit last
[3:05] time. And just to follow up again that
you can see
[3:08] » prek all the way up to high school,
postgrad. There are exciting things
[3:13] happening for teaching and learning
across the district and a lot to be
[3:16] really proud of. a lot of staff effort
has gone into gaining and being awarded
[3:22] these different grants and these
different initiatives that we're working
[3:25] on and that is something that will
happen um and be continue to be
[3:29] addressed throughout the school year.
And basically the big thing, the most
[3:33] important thing to share out is that on
September 2nd, u all of our students,
[3:38] not in our early education program,
they're coming very soon tomorrow, but
[3:42] all of our um kiddos that are in grades
uh one and beyond, they came on
[3:48] September 2nd and they were happy.
>> They were excited to be here. If you
[3:52] were down at Phelps in that area at all,
the music was blasting. Uh kids were
[3:57] dancing, staff were dancing, everyone
was happy as could be. We then went our,
[4:01] you know, up the road a little bit to
the middle school and the high school.
[4:04] Um, everyone really was happy about
coming back to school. I had shared with
[4:10] Superintendent Hacket that I was behind
a couple of students that were
[4:15] complimenting each other's outfits and
how excited they were to be back. Um,
[4:19] and they I mean didn't know that I was
hearing this, but it was just really
[4:23] nice to see,
>> right? And first and foremost, they were
[4:27] happy, they seemed healthy, and our
staff was there to support them on that
[4:32] first day. And I think uh making our
students and our staff feel as though
[4:37] they belong is the foundation that we
really want to achieve and develop on,
[4:42] right?
>> And I think all of our staff was
[4:43] successful doing that.

Well, I'd love to know what the high
[4:52] dosage tutoring is, but we don't have to
go into that now if you want. I I think
[4:56] it's it's interesting. Uh just looking I
I feel like some of these we definitely
[5:00] have heard of the the literacy grant and
the innovation pathways and the dual
[5:04] enrollment, but that high dosage
tutoring caught my eye. So, at at the at
[5:08] Phelps Elementary, um they as a team,
this district, the school bu district,
[5:13] and the building applied for a grant to
provide intensive tutoring to some of
[5:18] our students that may be at risk for um
literacy needs. And the Department of Ed
[5:24] awarded us this grant. And it doesn't uh
it doesn't come with a dollar figure,
[5:28] per se. It comes with staff that will
come out and do intensive tutoring with
[5:34] the kids on top of what they're already
getting from our own staff. Okay.
[5:39] » Uh Kelsey Hullbrook uh was really a
proponent behind getting this off the
[5:44] ground. We had this last year as well.
So this is a continuation and something
[5:50] that we saw great success with last
year. Um, and I can also share some more
[5:53] information with you as we move forward,
just um, how many kids are
[5:57] participating, how often they're getting
the services as we go along in our next
[6:01] teaching and learning update if that's
helpful.

hearing, you know, all these different
[6:07] opportunities and supports that are out
there is really great to especially at
[6:11] that age when they they might need it.

identify this and work on this, the

[7:55] » So the budget calendar, a few important
points before we go through some of the
[8:00] details in the budget calendar that I
just wanted to make sure everyone was
[8:05] aware of um is that the budget calendar
is a draft and that it is subject to
[8:11] change. Um the budget calendar is
organized
[8:15] pretty much by season. So we talk about
some of the work that was completed over
[8:19] the summer months. We talk about what
will happen currently in the fall
[8:24] months. Um some of the work as it
continues through the winter and then um
[8:28] some of the closeout work that will
happen over the spring. A lot of the
[8:33] work is continuous. So you'll see um
some of the same items that we will um
[8:40] work on in each one of the seasons. Um
and I think it's really important for
[8:46] everyone to know that when we talk about
the budget and when we look at the
[8:49] budget timeline, we truly are always
living in three fiscal years. So it's
[8:55] really important for us to be strong in
looking at the history of the previous
[9:00] fiscal year. And that's a lot of the
work that you can see happened over the
[9:04] summer months with the fiscal year 26
close out. Um we're also it's very
[9:11] important for us to make sure that there
are strong administration of the current
[9:16] budget that we're living in. So the
fiscal year 27 budget. So you'll see
[9:21] throughout the budget calendar that
there will be um continuous monthly
[9:25] budget reporting and that's um how the
budget information has been previously
[9:31] reported in the past. So we'll continue
that and then we'll also do some
[9:36] quarterly reporting with a memo that is
attached to it and that will just
[9:40] provide you some context of um this is
the budget picture to date. These are
[9:46] some of the projections that we're
looking at for the rest of the fiscal
[9:50] year and these are some of the impacts
that we may see going into the upcoming
[9:55] fiscal year. And so always looking at
the past year, the present year and then
[10:01] very importantly all of that information
is helping us build the budget for the
[10:06] upcoming year. And so you can see that
that work will start soon. So, the
[10:11] fiscal year 28 budget building process
will happen over the fall. That will
[10:17] start very soon. Um, and that will
continue over the winter leading up to
[10:22] town meeting in the spring, which is in
May. Um, why the budget calendar is
[10:29] important and why um, we thought it was
really important to bring this all to
[10:33] you and to talk about this tonight. Um,
we want to make sure that the budget
[10:38] isn't just a single financial document.
Um, we want it to be thoughtful, we want
[10:44] it to be transparent, and we want it to
be collaborative. And so the budget
[10:49] calendar truly um is an effort to make
the entire process transparent and
[10:55] collaborative not only um within the
district and the employees, the
[11:01] students, the staff and everyone that um
enters the Rockland public schools, but
[11:07] also with the community at large. So, we
do partner with the folks at town hall
[11:12] to talk about so many different we have
so many different shared costs. Um, and
[11:18] also just our community members. We
always try to remember that um we truly
[11:24] are making sure that we are representing
the taxpayers here in Rockland. Um, and
[11:30] we want to we want them to all know that
we're investing their funds wisely. Um,
[11:35] so again, I apologize that the document
in the calendar wasn't shared. Um, I
[11:40] really value and we all value feedback.
So, um, we're looking forward to working
[11:46] with everyone throughout the budget
process um, this year and into the next
[11:51] several years. Um, and if there are any
updates or changes that we can make,
[11:56] again, this is a draft. we can update it
as we finalize and schedule some of the
[12:02] meetings um that will happen throughout
the year. Uh and we'll make sure to
[12:07] share this out with folks so that we can
solicit some more feedback and continue
[12:12] to update it.

we always talk about this year and next

coming and it's coming and um I know
[12:24] when we're aligning budgets and things

for the people that don't sort of talk
[12:39] budget all the time this sort of spells
it out in an easier fashion. Um, and I
[12:44] think that that is huge for
transparency, huge for understanding of
[12:49] what we are doing. Um, we are the
biggest budget um, in the town of
[12:53] Rockland and we know that and so we do
try to be um, as transparent as possible
[12:58] and I think this just adds to it. So,

brief um getting staff to where they
[19:20] actually want to be, which is in their
classrooms getting ready. We had a um
[19:25] fabulous opening with grades 1 through
12 reporting um last week. is, you know,
[19:30] Jen said it was a lot of fun on day one,
but maybe day two in the rain was even a
[19:36] little bit more fun. Uh, welcoming
everyone welcoming everyone back. Um,
[19:41] so, uh, just the energy, the enthusiasm,
the new, it's just, it's everyone's
[19:47] favorite day of the year. So, um, it was
just, it was great. And tomorrow we
[19:50] welcome back, um, our preschool. Well,
some of the preschool are new and some
[19:54] of the kindergarten and new, but
preschool and kindergarten begin
[19:58] tomorrow. So, we'll have our whole
community together um for the first time
[20:01] tomorrow, which is um wonderful. Uh the
middle school, the high school, and
[20:06] Eston have all completed their
orientations for the um preschool,
[20:11] kindergarten, 9th, and 12th grade.
Phelps held its open house for all
[20:15] grades last week. And the middle
school's open house is this Thursday at
[20:20] 6 PM. And the high school's open house
is next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. All
[20:25] right. Um, enrollment is still ongoing.
We'll have updated numbers for you. Um,
[20:30] we got three new kindergarten
registrations today. Um, at at open
[20:35] house. We're here.

[20:42] » So, it's all very exciting. And thank
you to Noel Novio. The the
[20:46] transportation coordination and effort
that has gone on um over the course of
[20:51] the last, you know, several weeks is
just, as we all know, intensive, labor

>> um, and patience and kindness, and she
[21:01] does everything that she can to get
every kiddo on a bus as soon as
[21:05] possible. Um, but there are safety
processes and procedures we need to do
[21:10] um, and need to follow and first student
needs to follow to make sure that the
[21:14] kiddos are on the register. So, when
they do the bus clearing, the bus
[21:18] checks, etc. So, there is work that goes
on. It's not as simple as, you know,
[21:22] Jane, get on a bus,
>> right? there's work in the background.
[21:25] So, um so thank you to Noel um for all
that. Um I'm very pleased to report and
[21:31] I know Dr. Mars Small um is working this
evening, but there's been a tremendous
[21:37] improvement on the ebike um and bicycle
activity um on school property. Um and
[21:45] folks, Joe was me, you were mentioning
tonight that you've noticed it
[21:48] throughout the town,

[21:49] » Um the kiddos are following the rules,
following the regulations. They're
[21:53] wearing their helmets um and they are
not congregating here even on the
[21:57] weekends.

[21:58] » Um in the drive-thru. So, a huge shout
out to the police department um for all
[22:02] their efforts um regarding that. Thank
you to Tom Resky who donated a crew and
[22:08] materials to landscape the front of the
high school um before the start of
[22:12] school and plant the moms from um so
we're very grateful to him for that
[22:17] work. And then our senior uh
representative uh Nola Finn has been
[22:22] accepted to the department of elementary
and secondary education's advisory group
[22:27] on the state high school graduation
frameworks.

>> And she will be attending meetings in
[22:33] September and October. So

[22:40] we'll be recognizing in um partnership
um with town hall um and the town

terrorist attacks of 911 um through
[22:49] participation in Rockland Remembers the
911 ceremony which will begin at 8:30 in
[22:55] front of town hall. The high school
chorus will be singing both the national
[22:59] anthem and God bless America. our K to2
music uh department head John Piaza will
[23:05] be playing taps and students from the
high school and middle school student
[23:09] leadership groups will be attending as
well. So all residents are welcome and
[23:15] that is this Friday 911 at 8:30 a.m. in
front of town hall.

and doing whatever, there were no kids

with a helmet on. So, I am impressed

with our student representatives, Miss

>> Um, August was a great end to the summer
[24:04] and start to the school year. The
student council ran a leadership
[24:08] conference with leaders, captains, club
leaders, and student mentors. Um, we all
[24:13] came in for a night. We had a keynote
speaker, Dr. Doug Luff who spoke about
[24:17] his journey from homelessness to Harvard
and active leadership and making the
[24:22] choice to progress as a leader which was
fantastic. We had studentr run workshops
[24:27] and workshops by Dr. Dougloff himself
and it was a great night to get all of
[24:32] our student leaders together and ready
for the school year. Um and then shortly
[24:36] after we had our new student orientation
where we had our student mentors give
[24:40] tours to the incoming students um mostly
freshmen
[24:45] » and then our student led panel for the
parents which went well and just had us
[24:50] ready for September 2nd when we came in.
Um everything went flawlessly like you
[24:55] said such spirit and enthusiasm like
it's hard not to notice and
[25:01] » I love the start of school. I might be
crazy for that but Mhm.
[25:04] » I I definitely did notice the energy. Um
so I'm glad you pointed that out.
[25:09] » And then we had our fire drill today. No
issues. That went smoothly. Everyone's
[25:14] settling into their schedules. We have
picture day tomorrow. It was postponed,
[25:19] but fall sports are in full swing. Um I
know today girls and boys soccer had
[25:25] games. There was a volleyball game. And
then cross country and golf had their
[25:29] events.
And coming up is Senior Sunrise this
[25:34] Friday at 6:00 am bright and early. Um,
and then our first football home game is
[25:39] this Friday night. So, it'll be great to
see all the Bulldog spirit. That's all.

And um I think that the Eston pack is a
[28:21] hard pack because they're only there for
a short amount of time and then they
[28:24] move on. So anytime they get anyone
involved is a great thing and then it's
[28:28] usually those moms that or dads that
continue on and volunteer all the way up
[28:32] to this table. So um yeah, that's I
don't really have anything else. You
