[0:04] [Music] [0:30] we started to grow things and we made [0:33] the gardens up top because it does run [0:35] right up to Essex Street it's the whole [0:37] strip right here and last year our CG [0:41] became our new sponsor and they have [0:44] been very generous with allowing us to [0:45] do a lot of different things including [0:47] adding the five containers that you see [0:50] over across the street and it's a labor [0:54] of love that's what it's become it's [0:56] like how can we make this so beautiful [0:58] in the spring summer and fall because in [1:00] the winter as you may have seen it [1:03] doesn't look very good it's a wind [1:05] tunnel and everything gets collected in [1:07] there right right yeah so this is [1:12] startup time and we have another crew [1:14] helping us this morning weed and trench [1:18] this so the mulch can go down and the [1:20] flowers will go in and the only flowers [1:23] on this section the lower section are [1:26] the ones in the containers not any other [1:29] plantings and all the rest are up above [1:32] our perennials it's really fun and the [1:36] biggest most wonderful part of this [1:38] adventure is all meeting and seeing all [1:42] the people who really appreciate it and [1:45] say thank you every day their computer [1:48] traffic as you can see is huge right [1:50] here and people actually look forward to [1:53] it [1:54] seeing what's gonna happen next [1:57] [Music] [2:07] so the essential things are like at rug [2:10] you can see there's one on the island [2:12] over there [2:13] various trowels a shovel pitchfork Rose [2:20] food different kinds of Clippers and [2:24] scissors I have to show you this this is [2:29] battery-operated cream so you turn the [2:32] top the nozzle goes down you push the [2:36] button and it sprays an even layer of [2:39] weed preventer on the strip it's really [2:42] good and fast that's about it [2:47] so your truck is always full of good [2:48] stuff [2:51] [Music] [3:31] okay hi I'm Charlene and I work for the [3:34] Beautification Committee for the traffic [3:36] island people we do the traffic islands [3:38] in the in the city right now we're on [3:41] Washington Street and we're at what we [3:44] call the hosta gardens there were three [3:46] gardens here and run right along [3:49] Washington Street we planted this a few [3:52] years ago I think maybe three years ago [3:54] and we have mainly lost Asiya we need to [3:58] replace some because we lost some over [4:00] the winter but these hostas will go into [4:04] sleep during the winter and then you'll [4:07] see them sprouting up and that's what [4:08] they're you know they're little past [4:10] that point now they're coming up [4:11] sometimes these hostas will bloom so you [4:15] get long stems and blooms late in the [4:17] summer so today what I'm doing is I'm [4:20] planting a few grasses it looks like [4:24] that and what we're trying to do is just [4:27] trying to put some variation in this [4:29] garden to offset that all the green [4:31] color and to fill the spaces with [4:33] something else so the eye is attracted [4:35] to something else as people walk by it's [4:38] pretty much it we're trying to work for [4:40] soil here it's a very very dense soil so [4:44] we've been working a lot with that we [4:45] have to consider that we have a lot of [4:47] shade here from these trees so we [4:50] consider that with what we plant here [4:53] [Music] [5:24] hi I'm Kim Driscoll I'm the Mara Salem [5:27] and so pleased to be at the annual [5:29] beautification committees plant sale [5:30] this is just one of the many things the [5:32] Beautification Committee does in Salem [5:34] if you've ever driven around our [5:35] community and seen wonderful islands or [5:38] frankly any green space the [5:39] Beautification Committee has had a hand [5:41] in that please to really celebrate this [5:43] all-volunteer organization and all that [5:45] they do to keep our city looking [5:46] beautiful sparkling and allowing [5:48] community members to come together to [5:50] make green spaces come alive [5:51] [Music] [6:09] hello good morning welcome to the Salem [6:12] Beautification Committee plant sale in [6:14] May it's our annual fundraiser and the [6:17] money goes towards supporting our [6:19] efforts for cleaning up the traffic [6:21] islands and buying mulch doing all kinds [6:23] of good things like that we have a [6:25] variety of plants here a number of [6:27] annuals and perennials and this year we [6:30] have pollinators we're very proud of [6:32] that because we're trying to support [6:33] bees and butterflies and creating homes [6:37] for them here in Salem Massachusetts so [6:39] join us every year in May and Saturday [6:42] on a Saturday on the common and come [6:44] down and buy your plants thank you very [6:45] much [6:49] [Music] [7:19] my name is Annie Scott of thrive design [7:23] I'm an ecological landscape designer [7:25] working with native plants and I've been [7:30] in the Salem area for about three years [7:33] now and I'm new to the Salem [7:36] Beautification Committee today at the [7:39] plant cell we're selling native [7:41] pollinator plants which people have been [7:45] really receptive of these plants all [7:48] help provide food and shelter for the [7:50] native pollinators [7:52] this plan is liatris it's a plant that [7:56] does well in dry sunny conditions it has [8:00] a beautiful purple spiky flower later in [8:04] the summer this is mountain men it's one [8:07] of my favorites and also it's the [8:11] perennial plant of the Year voted by the [8:14] Garden Club of America it is a very [8:17] fragrant plant that does well in moist [8:20] conditions and it attracts lots of local [8:25] bees and the third plan is butterfly [8:30] weed this is has orange flowers and it's [8:35] loved by the Barnum and Mark burnouts [8:39] [Music] [10:13] you
