[0:05] my name is Michelle chimsarian and I am the Outreach coordinator for the lean
[0:10] Senior Center [Music]
[0:15] good morning everyone so what we do here we create this group where we bring some
[0:24] of our seniors that actually are taking care of somebody else or care for
[0:28] someone so we can help them connect the caregiver part with nutrition and
[0:37] cooking because nutrition being food protected is one of the main reasons for
[0:43] us to keep ourself and our body up and running so we just want to show our
[0:48] seniors by cooking by touching ingredients how nutrition cooking eating
[0:55] is well connected when you take care of someone or while you've been taken care
[1:01] of
[1:05] stable when they're at home okay [Music]
[1:09] so today we make a breakfast muffin so we taught the seniors how to make it
[1:16] what ingredient contains and the importance of those
[1:20] ingredients for them so we pre-chop some of the vegetables but our seniors were
[1:27] able to actually break the egg whisk it add all the ingredients make sure
[1:32] they're seasoning with a little salt and pepper and then put it in the oven so
[1:37] they're actually making that dish and then be able to enjoy it
[1:43] we also incorporate a drink so they were able to
[1:49] prepare a tea with fresh ingredients which that was mint Ginger and lemon
[1:57] for the frittata or the breakfast muffin what we use we use eggs we use broccoli
[2:03] we use turkey bacon we use a scallion we use cheddar cheese and green peppers
[2:10] but the beauty of it was also that we want to showcase to all of them so that
[2:16] we can bring into reality what what taking care of other and you being take
[2:22] care of means so everybody was making their own dish right so they were all
[2:26] excited no I'm gonna add more bacon to mine I'm gonna add more pepper to mine
[2:30] but guess what we put it all on the muffin pan and then we bake it and then
[2:34] everybody was eating somebody else plate so everybody was eating a dish that they
[2:42] put so much love and energy into it and that's what we want to broadcast here
[2:46] you know that we use great product fresh product but at the same time when we're
[2:52] making something we make it with love and then that we transport that love and
[2:57] that energy for somebody else sometimes without even you knowing and that's what
[3:02] was going on today
[3:07] [Music]
[3:12] so this has already grease on it we spray it so I wanted to put it in there
[3:18] I'm gonna get it so that's six of them one two three four five six
[3:27] what we make with this is fresh tea we have fresh mint and then we have some
[3:34] fresh ginger root okay we boil it for roughly maybe 15 minutes and now we're
[3:40] gonna serve it to our seniors and they will incorporate it on Lemon so they
[3:43] will squeeze a little lemon and put some honey to the you like it
[3:47] when you have a cup of tea it's not just a drink when we're seniors or when we
[3:55] are a little ill you know feeling that warm on that cup on that glass it helps
[4:01] you it helps your circulation and any help you feel loved I will say also
[4:08] adding all those fresh herbs that Aroma actually help our seniors and help
[4:16] anyone that drink tea for us to calm down to inhale that positive energy but
[4:23] also at the same time we're having all the great nutritions that those herbs
[4:28] come with it so while you have a cup of tea you're not just drinking a liquid
[4:35] you're drinking love you're drinking Health you're drinking
[4:40] um positive energy so that's what they enjoy so a lot of them they have never
[4:46] experienced a to have a fresh tea they always just get a tea bag and and that's
[4:52] it but now they know that they can have any fruit they can have an orange they
[4:56] can have a mandarin they can have a lemon they can have a lemon shallow
[5:00] um herb they can have mint they can have basil and they just incorporate that
[5:05] with hot water and some fruit they can combine it they cover a little bit and
[5:10] just by their smelling that the energy change the energy they they the mold and
[5:16] everything change and they become more happy or they become more calm and also
[5:20] they uncover what helped them to go to sleep you know a lot of these things
[5:24] that we're making they discover that they become more calm and that helped
[5:29] them to when they take their nap or if they just want to relax a little bit so
[5:33] the importance of eating healthy the importance of of incorporating fresh
[5:39] item is not just for you to be healthy it's also for your inner self to be calm
[5:45] and on a happy mode on that all the love that we receive by food and by people is
[5:51] all connected yes
[5:57] [Music]
[6:08] you know the the body is so perfect but if you don't feed it with what you
[6:14] specifically need it's not gonna work good so when you take care of somebody
[6:19] else and that person doesn't have food security or the food security they may
[6:24] have is some food that are not good at all for them okay so that is why it's so
[6:30] important that we the source of the food comes from a place that is great food
[6:37] good food that is safe for us to eat and most important that is fresh so that's
[6:42] why Phoenix Food Hub is for us like as soon as we know me and Michelle that
[6:48] we've been working together since we opened the senior center we're like oh
[6:51] no we have to do this this is the best way for us to incorporate for our
[6:55] caregivers to give them the opportunity and the spotlight so they can actually
[7:00] take great care of their loved ones
[7:07] if you're looking to learn if you're looking to actually connect with others
[7:12] because we don't only cook here okay we also share all the seniors that come
[7:18] here that are caregivers or or are or providing or receiving that Services
[7:23] they share they share those moments and they share what is important for them
[7:29] and also the greatness of a lot of them receiving all the services that galise
[7:36] City and the state provide it's amazing to see how Michelle and I we can just go
[7:43] over and we feel so happy knowing that there was a lot of people that they
[7:47] didn't have an opportunity to be safe at home and a lot of people that they
[7:51] didn't have an opportunity to feel good because they didn't have the right
[7:56] resources or they didn't have any ideas on how to use services and also
[8:02] incorporate it for their life we do this second Thursday of every
[8:08] month here so I'm very grateful for Michelle Park Elise the Phoenix Group
[8:13] Hub and the Lynn senior center in the city and everyone that helped because we
[8:18] are transforming life and we are better when we're connected because we actually
[8:23] are changing life
