[8:03] Arneson on the occasion of his honor flight, whereas Barney Arneson proudly served in the

[8:09] United States Army and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam, answering the call of

[8:14] his country with courage, dedication, and honor.

[8:18] And whereas during his final tour in Vietnam, Mr. Arneson sustained combat wounds and

[8:24] service to our nation and was awarded the Purple Heart,

[8:27] a distinguished recognition of his sacrifice and bravery.

[8:31] And whereas the lasting effects of these injuries

[8:33] remain with him to this day, yet he

[8:36] continues to face every challenge

[8:38] with remarkable strength, resilience, and determination.

[8:42] Whereas Mr. Ogneson has dedicated himself not only

[11:44] I spent nine years in service in the Army, two tours in Vietnam, and one in Europe, staged

[11:53] with NATO and Naples, Italy.

[11:57] And my second tour in Vietnam was rather bad.

[12:02] I got blown up with a booby trap, claymore landmine, if you folks know what that is.

[12:07] It's one of our own weapons, and it sprays ball bearings in a bunch of different directions,

[12:16] but primarily out to the front.

[12:19] And one got me and my abdomen went through and into my back and hit a nerve that controlled

[12:25] my left side.

[12:27] I was down and couldn't move.

[12:29] And Lieutenant Geyser, who was standing in front of me, he was killed, and Sergeant

[12:34] Snyder was also killed.

[12:36] And so I had an opportunity when we were in Washington, D.C. to get a rubbings of their

[12:42] names and it was very emotional.

[12:45] A little bit about the honor flight, it was excellent to begin with.

[12:52] They gave us, we met at Flint, Bishop Airport in Flint, and we had to be there by 7.30

[13:00] in the morning on Tuesday, last Tuesday.

[13:03] and they gave us this little thing to wrap around our neck and it was pretty

[13:09] cool because they had us put our driver's license on this side and a boarding

[13:15] pass on this side now we're in the lobby of the airport right when we got ready

[13:21] to go we went straight to the gate the only time I've ever flown where I

[13:32] of goodies, a t-shirt to wear that day, and then a polo shirt the next day in a jacket

[13:39] in case it got cold. So they were very, very accommodating for all of us. Every veteran

[13:46] that went on this honor flight had to have a guardian. Well, the guardian cannot be your

[13:51] spouse. It has to be somebody other than the spouse. So my grandson Gage standing

[13:59] there is was my guardian and the guardian has three two things that he has to do one he has to

[14:09] keep track of the veteran so the veteran doesn't get lost the second thing is when we go up the steps

[14:16] of any steps he has to be behind us case we fall we fall backwards on a soft landing if we

[14:22] are going down the steps he stands in front of us so the same thing we have a soft landing if

[14:28] we fall. The first day when we got to Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., there was a ton

[14:37] of people there waiting for us. Well, thank you for your service and like the sign says

[14:42] and we love our veterans and all of that. It was just outstanding. A lot of people,

[14:49] a lot of adults, a lot of children were there and walking us to Washington, D.C.

[14:56] Then we went to the Aerospace Museum, if you've ever been...

[15:00] In the D.C., you got to go to the Airspace Museum. We went there first, and then we went

[15:06] to the Army Museum. The Army Museum is a relatively new one. It was finished about two years ago,

[15:14] but in the early days when they first started it, they were soliciting donations from all

[15:19] the veterans and big companies to try to fund the building of this museum. And at that

[15:26] time I bought a brick and so the purple one of the main things I had to do when

[15:30] Gage and I were there was to finally brick. Well it was early I had purchased it

[15:37] early and so when we walked into the entrance to the parking lot for the

[15:42] museum there was a section right to the right and right there was my my brick

[15:48] so it was really cool that they have thousands of bricks now because a lot

[15:52] of people have, you know, a purchase one for their own families and stuff.

[15:58] And the Army Museum was excellent.

[16:00] One of the things that was interesting is that they had a Sherman tank sitting there, and

[16:06] I remember that we would get periodicals over the years of the construction of the

[16:13] Museum.

[16:14] And I remember one periodical that came, it was an aerial view.

[16:20] and it showed the Sherman tank, there was nothing around it.

[16:24] They put the Sherman tank in position and then built a building around it

[16:27] because they couldn't get it in their ass. That was pretty cool.

[16:33] We were treated to a buffet dinner that evening, Tuesday evening, outstanding food.

[16:41] They put us up at the Hilton Hotel.

[16:46] We were up to 5.30 the following morning, Wednesday morning, and on the bus at 7.

[16:52] They had four buses, there were 76 of us, I don't know if I mentioned that before,

[16:58] there were 76 of us together, one World War II vet who's 100 years old, he had his brother

[17:04] with him, six Korean veterans and the rest of us were all Vietnam veterans, so it was

[17:11] really good.

[17:11] we had a really good group.

[17:15] Let's see where it was laid out. First thing on the Wednesday morning

[17:20] we went to Arlington National Cemetery. If you've ever been to Arlington National Cemetery,

[17:26] of course the highlight is the changing of the guard. And if you've seen the changing of the

[17:31] guard, it's an extremely impressive ceremony. I have seen it down three times and the thing

[17:40] that was impressive to me was two things. I had never seen the laying of the wreath before.

[17:49] That's another ceremony that they have. And the other thing that was unique in my experience

[17:56] was that the Sergeant of the Guard was a female. Now the Guard started before 1937, but as

[18:08] Because of 1937, the guard has been guarded 24-7, 365 days since 1937.

[18:20] Since that time, there have been several ladies on the guard.

[18:25] I did not know that.

[18:26] I did not know that they had ladies in the guard, but there have been a few, at least

[18:31] 10.

[18:31] and the lady that was on ours when we were there was a sergeant of the guard it's

[18:39] very very interesting and she led the World War two vet and his brother who

[18:45] was his guardian out in the middle of the platform made a right face and went

[18:52] to this the support for the wreath and that World War two veteran placed the

[18:58] on the standards. It's really really cool to see all of that happen. After that

[19:05] ceremony we met as a group in a shady area because of a real hot day that day

[19:11] and the lady who was the sergeant of the guard in the meantime had changed

[19:16] clothes and got into regular clothes and she came on she talked to us and told

[19:21] us all about the guard and what was required of the guard. The standards

[19:26] for the women are just like the men.

[19:28] I mean, they have to go through the same training sequences.

[19:31] She set the normal timeframe for people

[19:36] to serve in the guard for two years.

[19:38] She said, the first year, half of the year is in training.

[19:42] The second year, you're training your replacement.

[19:45] So it is extensive training that they have to go through.

[19:48] She was there for three years and wanted to stay longer,

[19:51] but they had sent her off to drill sergeant school.

[19:55] So she's gonna wind up being a drill sergeant. She'll make a good one, too. She was very good. Yeah

[20:00] then we went to

[20:03] After that we saw the

[20:06] Marine Corps

[20:07] Memorial had a buffet lunch. They treated us extremely well with food in that and then after that we went to the Pentagon

[20:15] And if you remember 9-11

[20:18] The years of airplane that crashed in the Pentagon

[20:21] There was 184 people killed, 125 of them were in the Pentagon and the balance were in the

[20:29] plane.

[20:30] And if you've not been there before, each person was named, and you could tell by the

[20:36] way that their memorial was situated, whether they were in the Pentagon or whether they

[20:40] were on the plane.

[20:42] My wife and I had been there before, so I knew what that was all about, because

[20:47] that was cool.

[20:48] Then we also went to the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, I had not been there before, didn't

[20:57] even know it existed.

[20:58] And that was very, very nice too, very good memorial for them.

[21:02] We hopped on the plane at about six o'clock, I guess, and made our way back to Flint.

[21:11] And when we walked in the airport at Flint, I'm telling you, it was something else.

[21:17] They had thousands of people there walking back home.

[21:21] It was a tear-jerker for sure.

[21:24] It was just such a tremendous effort that they had put out.

[21:29] And I'm here to tell you, if you're a veteran,

[21:31] if you had an honorable discharge,

[21:34] you could apply for a trip and just do it,

[21:38] because it is excellent.

[21:41] They have a terminology in the military.

[21:44] If something is really, really good above and beyond, they call it outstanding.

[21:50] And I'm telling you this, that trip was outstanding.

[21:54] So all veterans take advantage of it.

[21:57] It's real simple, mid-Michigan honor flight.

[22:01] You Google it, and they'll have an application there that you can fill out online, send it in,

[22:07] and you can have the opportunity to go, and I highly recommend it.

[22:12] My Meals on Wheels, I'm wearing my Meals on Wheels because I'm promoting Meals on Wheels.

[22:17] So all you folks that support the Meals on Wheels program for Waterford, I give you thanks

[22:24] because I've been doing it since 2011 and I love it.

[26:27] in which one of the chair of the greenways will remove.

[27:23] been a great success with the last one coming as Tony announced. They had a two-nose sheep

[27:28] to the flock, including a yearling female and a lamb female. Both are a rare tease

[27:34] which are British heritage sheet known for their long,

[32:18] was a consortium of police and fire agencies

[32:25] payment, and other particular platforms for the group so that everybody didn't have to

[32:31] go out and do the same thing over and over again by themselves.

[32:34] So they provide our records management system, our mugshot and booking system, our computer

[32:40] aid and dispatch system, our mobile data computer system, all come through Clemus.

[32:45] And being members of Clemus, we enjoy great benefit in terms of pricing and other things

[32:53] to come with it when we can buy these things and develop these things as a group.

[32:58] Chief, how often does this come about?

[33:02] So the agreement, it will renew every year automatically and the participation is the

[33:12] yearly fee and we pay quarterly for that.

[33:16] In this particular resolution, all we're doing is moving from the consortium to the

[33:21] authority. The consortium previously was under the umbrella of Oakland County because Clemence

[33:26] is moving out of that. Being connected to the county is going to be its own independent

[33:31] authority now. So this agreement just allows us to participate in the authority as we

[33:36] always have with the consortium.

[37:18] So I want to make sure I highlight a few of the recent organizations

[37:21] that are continuously giving back to help us beautify and enhance our park system.

[37:26] First we have the Waterford Garden Club.

[37:28] This amazing group of gardeners is always there to beautify the gardens at the Drayton

[37:33] Plains Nature Center and the Leggett campus.

[37:35] They recently held a few different work days to help beautify the facilities, and we are

[37:39] greatly appreciative to them for all of their hard work.

[37:43] Penistar Aviation has helped us out the last couple of years at Hush Hathaway Park,

[37:47] and they've done an employee work day out there.

[37:49] Most recently, they were at Hush Hathaway Park last week, and they helped us with

[37:53] several landscaping projects and prepared an area that will plant as a new garden space.

[37:59] And then we also had Vibe Credit Union for about the fourth year in a row.

[38:04] They've helped out at the Drayton Plains Nature Center at our garlic mustard pole at the

[38:08] end of last month.

[38:09] And we were able to remove 43 60 gallon bags of garlic mustard from the property.

[38:17] So great job everybody.

[38:18] We have so many wonderful volunteers like Mr. Ardinson mentioned for Meals on Wheels,

[38:24] but we want to make sure we highlight them and we usually try to highlight them on our social media too.
