[0:25] general discussions and Robert I thought we could begin by talking about what you

[0:31] brought up last week. Yeah. Is that good?

[0:38] uh an interesting discussion last week. So

[0:41] we have a lot going on in the town. And you guys have a lot going on in

[0:46] school. And we kind of get together and we we we

[0:50] kind of share information, but it's it's it's

[0:55] not like um I have to think of a good way to put it.

[0:58] It's not like we're working out working together on you

[1:03] know, ways that we can assist you and you ways you can assist us. We Is that

[1:07] Is that a good way of And so we we were just talking about, you know, like some

[1:12] of the the the strategic planning, the long-term planning that the town is

[1:16] doing, for example, you know, on the waterfront. Um on any grants that we're

[1:22] applying for. Um what else comes to mind, Robert?

[1:27] » Um just um everything housing.

[1:30] » Yeah, well we we actually said casual. I had a casual We had a very casual

[1:34] discussion about it earlier. But you know, the the the the thought is

[1:39] that that as we're confronting problems for the town,

[1:44] you know, we bring things that are appropriate

[1:48] or to talk about with to to the school and say, "Okay, you know, I mean housing

[1:54] is a perfect is a perfect example. You know, it is as I said to you before,

[1:58] Frank, it is such a massive problem because

[2:03] um you know,

[2:05] Dainitz is losing I think 90% of their staff this week,

[2:10] and luckily Tegan, who was one of your students, is well connected, and Derek's

[2:15] I mean, Derek's speaking to Tegan, and they're arranging for a bunch

[2:20] of kids to come and work at Dainitz and kind of keep it together until until the

[2:25] school opens this day. But it's it's you know, that that's an example and and I

[2:31] mean, Craig am I okay to What are we talking about privately?

[2:35] » Yeah, yeah, yeah. >> So, Craig said there is a possibility

[2:39] for some dorm space next year. It's a possibility, isn't it?

[2:43] » Yes. >> And something like that not only helps a

[2:47] business, and in fact helps the whole town.

[2:51] Because because people want I mean, I people want to come here. Meaning and um

[2:58] I use this as just a a small example, you know, I tend to be an ambitious

[3:04] thinker, and if anyone had said to me

[3:09] that Jacques and the Waterfront would be doing days at 7 8 8 7 8 800 meals,

[3:15] I would have said it's simply impossible. We're not We're not a busy

[3:18] that town. But there Well, there was one day I think he did 740 meals.

[3:24] It's just it it it's it's it just shows you that the need is here, the people

[3:29] want it, and if we offer the services, you know,

[3:33] that helps the shops. That helps attract when you when people come to tour the

[3:38] school in the summertime and the in the broader waterfront seems to thrive,

[3:42] right? Are they going to choose you or Massachusetts?

[3:47] You know, they're going to say, "Wow, this place is happening, you know?"

[3:51] You want to do that? >> Yeah, yeah.

[3:53] So, yeah, we I mean, >> obviously there's a lot you guys do and

[3:56] you don't don't talk about outside and

[4:01] and we don't want to step over any boundaries. We don't want to

[4:05] um create any strife, but what

[4:10] but when there are things that we can work on together, for instance on the

[4:13] comp plan um

[4:16] the economic development group it's it's they've kind of paired their stuff down

[4:20] to just looking at how can we prepare

[4:25] Casting to take in more families. Right. Or or and and one of the goals um

[4:32] that happens there too is to have more um

[4:35] more in our main faculty and staff come back to Casting. And I we all know

[4:41] housing is an issue, but um and so if there are ways that maybe

[4:46] sometimes during these meetings we can put something more substantive like

[4:50] that. I want to get into it and have a really

[4:53] good discussion. It doesn't mean we're going to work every detail out or get it

[4:57] done, but it means that we can begin having some really substantive

[5:01] discussions um and get past um our favorites, parking

[5:06] and truck noise. And and and move into, you know, really

[5:11] making our relationship a little more cohesive. Does that seem weird

[5:15] » No. No. No. It's right on. I I think at some level um within the within the

[5:20] public forums, we should probably have a a working session to go through some of

[5:24] this stuff because we have our limitations, right? We have green space,

[5:27] we have educational space and all those different things. We we're in a mode now

[5:32] where we're going to start upgrading some of our facilities. We can't build

[5:36] new ones. We all know that. But we can improve what we have.

[5:41] And physical improvements to some of the some of the things are improvements you

[5:44] can see, some you can't. Like last last last year we did the windows and just

[5:49] huge huge difference.

[5:51] Big energy savings, building looks like a new building now. And it it looked

[5:55] pretty tired beforehand. And just a little thing like that.

[6:00] But we're starting to We've done the windows now in Leavitt Hall. Done the

[6:03] windows in Flat. And we're working our way working our

[6:07] way towards there. So, we've been doing small upgrades, but I

[6:11] think that if we get together and talk talk to housing what what we'd like to

[6:15] do to our buildings. I think there's a huge opportunity on

[6:19] the waterfront. So, one of the underlying things for our

[6:23] for our waterfront is I'll say it's easy to say publicly

[6:28] with the extra dock space, the idea that we can bring in out of town vessels,

[6:32] things like that that are coming to town.

[6:34] But we need to have someplace more like Camden's got on the waterfront to to

[6:40] take them in. You know, like like if we had joint facilities, laundry things

[6:45] like that on the waterfront. And you talk maybe a a joint sailing center

[6:49] that's with the town and with the school.

[6:51] Sometimes in the past they've been reticent to do it because their

[6:54] relationship goes up and down, but um

[6:58] » I mean it's it's it's a it's a it's a total win-win. I mean, if we had

[7:02] facilities down there that were joint facilities and we were

[7:08] and we were able to figure out a way to manage it so it's always clean and

[7:11] organized. Um

[7:14] you know, we share the expense of that. I mean,

[7:17] you know, I I I'm going to use this as a small example. I was speaking to a

[7:22] resident who who just brought his boat up

[7:25] from from

[7:28] Delaware. I I forget where he brought his boat up by. And he was telling me

[7:32] about some of the really difficult places that he had to stop along the way

[7:38] to stay overnight or to dock. And he said when he got to Castine it was such

[7:42] a pleasure cuz pulling into our harbor is so easy. And and you know, so if if

[7:49] if Castine became known as one of the best

[7:54] ports, both for the school and for private individuals, I think that that

[8:00] would go a long way towards our goal of more economic development. That's a you

[8:05] know, you know, so I think that you know, there and I mean, Craig, we've

[8:09] talked about the past like I know you're talking about doing something on top of

[8:14] » Payson. >> Payson. What's it called?

[8:16] » Payson Hall. >> Payson Hall, yeah.

[8:18] Like if if that's done and there's food service and there's people hang out up

[8:23] there and people know, wait a second, I can pull into Castine,

[8:27] I can dock my boat, I can take a shower, I can do my laundry, I can walk up to

[8:32] Payson Hall, have this great view, have have a nice lunch. I mean, that's a game

[8:38] changer. >> Yeah.

[8:39] I think I think that's the stuff. And and for us,

[8:47] » Uh, but the I mean, those are the things we upgrade the facilities we've got and

[8:51] and more mixed usage, you know, same uh, things that we do with the town

[8:55] right now have been working and it's it's benefiting our benefiting town and

[8:58] our students and our staff, faculty. Um, the relationship is good because

[9:03] we're everybody's transparent. We're all trying to do the same right thing

[9:05] together. >> Right.

[9:07] » So we can do more of that. Tackle the housing issue.

[9:11] Uh, next year we get 120 beds back in Curtis Hall, which be a huge

[9:15] achievement. Um, Curtis Hall will be done, the pier will be done by

[9:20] » Are you still Are you still talking about potentially the students live on

[9:23] the boat? Is that still a possibility? >> Yes. Yeah.

[9:25] That'll be a potential next year. >> So like the So the docks done in March,

[9:30] the cruise comes back in July. >> Yeah.

[9:33] » And then we're talking about after that that that year.

[9:36] » There's a There's a thin potential we might get them on there this winter, but

[9:39] um probably pretty thin. Just depends on It

[9:43] depends on a lot of things. Then the gangway system, we're not comfortable

[9:47] um putting people out there this fall, but we know by sure next summer Reed &

[9:52] Reed will be done and then Nickerson O'Day will be done with the dorms and

[9:55] we'll be seeing a lot of contractors leaving town. Or we have another

[9:59] project. Be a nice time to start start my

[10:02] when they all left. Uh but uh you know, both groups have done very very good job

[10:08] on their projects. Um the

[10:11] the complaints for either for Nickerson O'Day and

[10:14] and uh and Reed & Reed have been very very minimal and they've dealt with a I

[10:18] think they've dealt with the bumps and morings here and there, but

[10:21] uh for a project so intensive, it's been pretty

[10:24] » It has been beyond my I just say my personal expectations of the challenges.

[10:29] It is It has been 10 times easier than I thought.

[10:35] » It's been really good and um

[10:37] I will say too, you know, I know you guys have a board that you have to go to

[10:42] and we have a board that we have to go to, the voters. It's the important one.

[10:45] » [laughter] >> And um you know, you can't make a lot of

[10:49] promises and things, but I love the idea of having a working session with you

[10:53] guys now and again to talk about some of these bigger deeper conversations

[10:59] because as you said, you are right now physically constrained in where you can

[11:04] go and what we can have. But if there was an opportunity

[11:08] for the town to reorganize the ordinance and give you more space, you know, is

[11:14] that a conversation we would at some point want to have?

[11:17] » Yeah, or even give us some flexibility with the space we have. Like, you know,

[11:21] we've talked about like a a dormitory above the Steven Street lot, which is

[11:25] So, if you went up and up there, and then you'd have a mixed, you know, I'm

[11:30] you know, imagine if I had a magic wand, it would be 150 student beds and another

[11:35] you know, 30 beds or two-bedroom apartments that would be workforce. It

[11:39] would be town townsfolk and and our next and probably our faculty who lose their

[11:44] faculty and give them a chance to get back on their feet. Um

[11:48] that's a that's a winner. It's a huge winner for the community.

[11:51] » Yeah. >> Right.

[11:54] Talk about together and see if we can plan them out, socialize them with the

[12:00] community and and see what we, you know, and find out

[12:05] » And and the working group, if it's only one of us

[12:08] in the working group >> Mhm.

[12:24] and priorities. >> The other thing that I wanted to bring

[12:27] up is that we are in the early stages of planning our first infrastructure

[12:35] discussion between the town and the residents.

[12:40] We're hoping to do this in the next month or so.

[12:45] » Yeah, and we will have the engineers, Severe

[12:49] and >> Severe and Nahar.

[12:51] » Nahar, come and do a presentation to the

[12:56] residents. All the infrastructure needs that the

[13:00] town has and their recommendation in in in the order of operations cuz

[13:06] it's quite complex. All of you know, it's $30 million of projects.

[13:12] but I think it would be really important that, you know, someone from

[13:17] the school is there because I'm some of this infrastructure

[13:23] will will um help help the school, help the town.

[13:28] Um um I don't know if there if there's once

[13:31] we once we kind of prioritize the projects and we get a sense of the

[13:38] dollars. Of course, we're going to be applying

[13:40] for you know, progression direct spending, but it like if we're applying

[13:44] together is it you are you're you're the biggest use of

[13:48] infrastructure in the town. And so

[13:52] do you have >> I'm trying to find it.

[13:54] » Yeah, I think they said they said that. >> We just said it would be in September.

[13:59] » September or October. So anyway, I just wanted to say that.

[14:12] That attempting to tackle the infrastructure

[14:16] problem is probably the most difficult issue

[14:22] that this select board in the next the next 10 years of select boards will

[14:27] will face because it's just an enormously expensive

[14:32] problem and you you know, you put $30 million divided by how many households

[14:36] are there? And that

[14:43] » It's it's you know, and and at some point the infrastructure is something

[14:56] he said we're at the point where the projects picked us, we didn't pick them.

[16:16] They got here Friday. They'll be going through parade. Parade is middle of the

[16:21] mid-afternoon on Sunday. They get 5 minutes with their parents and then they

[16:25] have their kind of academic orientation.

[16:28] Maybe they get 15 minutes. It's not a long time.

[16:56] we value the school and how important our the students are to the to the town.

[18:17] Casey's Deli is her son was coming here. So I just I just you know, people people

[18:21] people care about school. >> We're doing a lot more starting this

[18:25] fall. We're doing a lot more messaging to parents, trying to get the parents

[18:28] around. The kids don't want them around, but we do.

[21:09] from where the um uh boat lift is down to docks, across to

[21:14] a barge. It's going to be a little funky-looking. We're still trying to

[21:24] the captain's going to work with the fire chief and and uh and

[23:20] perhaps getting into the detail of meeting into long-range planning, what

[23:24] kind of planning you're going after for what, how we can be helpful in your long

[23:28] lines. Um, as we try and think about our [clears throat] affordable housing

[23:33] initiatives and what other things Yeah, lower we've got the engineers

[23:37] priorities on infrastructure, but what are the what's what's the other context

[23:41] that we need to pay attention to and are there big are there areas or uh

[23:47] potential missions or things that are already in the works that that we can

[23:51] mutually sort of be on the ground floor for the planning up so that it's not

[23:56] just a consultation, you know, I think like an hour, but that

[24:01] um we start to see well what can we bring to the table

[24:04] um early on and and figure out how to maybe there's special grants we can

[24:09] apply for maybe we need to social with we're

[24:13] saying socialization with um uh the

[24:18] the the town's folks so, you know, people are aware of what's coming and

[24:22] excited about it and understand the reasons coming underneath the project.

[24:26] Particularly if we really if we want to make wellness changes or

[24:30] make sort of create the enabling environment

[24:34] of the town that helps you MMA do what you want to do.

[24:38] Um, because you know, your growth and prominence and success

[24:43] ours is ours is like Hastings growth and prominence and success is linked to

[24:47] that. Um, and we can we can do some interesting little things on fringes and

[24:52] we can market the waterfront and so forth, but um

[24:55] but our um yeah, our our fortunes are certainly for

[25:00] the capital spending our fortunes are up.

[25:51] some students. I think a better message would be we're looking for 35 families

[25:57] to host a student once a month and then we can work towards that goal, okay?

[26:02] » Yeah, then we can do that. It'd be interesting if we told the story of one

[26:05] of them too, like one of the older ones I ever knew was Mike Coughlin.

[26:09] Mike Coughlin um took in a a student named Zach Lawrence who I met I don't

[26:14] know, 10 12 years ago when I was a head hunter and he told me I know this Mike

[26:18] Mike Coughlin back to Castine and I said I know who that guy is and uh but that

[26:23] that was once I knew that

[26:26] I was able to help place him in a new role and matched him up with a person in

[26:30] Massachusetts and now he's been promoted two and three times. He's very

[26:34] successful. And he just came back to Mike's place uh last spring. Went down

[26:38] there for some bite and and that just started as a town person

[26:44] mentoring an MMA student. >> Yeah.

[28:53] down there and because of the tide, it's going to start around 7:30 in the

[28:57] morning and then we have all the incoming freshmen down there for

[29:01] another team-building event and a big barbecue. So, that's 7:30 starts and

[29:06] ends at around 2:30. >> And how many incoming freshmen are

[29:10] there? >> We'll have just under 300, I think.

[29:13] » And so, you know, and then for to your point on hosting families, I think it's

[29:19] almost split equally 50 % from Maine and 50% from outside of Maine. So, there's a

[29:25] there's a big need for host you know, can be a big need for host families who

[29:30] will step up and work with the community.

[29:37] that, you know, that we will need Do Is there a number you have in mind? 30, 40,
