[8:11] I was going scary to death and show you. I got up this morning about 5 o'clock and 4 o'clock, and I made notes on what I wanted to say to you, but you don't want

[8:19] me to do

[8:20] that. That would take a long time. Um…

[8:22] Thank you. 1st of all, I really felt sat down with you the other day, and I threw out some thank yous, and I wrote to Josh and Commissioner Mackle and said, would it be okay if I just said a public thank you, because it's really hard if you miss people, and one of the things that maybe 2 weeks ago, if you weren't there.

[8:38] I was absolutely shocked almost to death. I had a heart condition. I probably would have died.

[8:43] But walking into the chapel, the honor that was paid to me for 50 some years here at the jail as a chaplain.

[8:52] was something, number one that was embarrassing. It was humbling.

[8:56] And yeah, believe me, you pulled it off. I was shocked. I received my own sons there. I always wanted to see all my boys in jail at the same time. Sounds good.

[9:05] And there they all were, not to mention some of my grandkids, and it was probably one time that we could have got away with it, and I would have all my grandkids there, including a 3-year-old. They weren't able to come. Um…

[9:16] I'm going to hand my nose to you, Josh. Not that they'll make any sense, because someday I'll give you in just a minute. I'm not going through and believe me.

[9:24] Um, I guess I started with these words, let my eyes affect my heart.

[9:29] And now she has to quote from a prophet named Jeremiah, "Let my eyes affect my heart. But I think that's a great general statement for everybody, right? Let the things I see somehow hit me here. And so I wanted to say that first. I also want to say I grew up in Coatesville.

[9:46] Since age 9, I went…

[9:48] 68. So my mother died in 1967. My senior year. And so 2 things I learned growing up in Coatesville. Number one, life is short. I did learn that by age 16. And then I had also learned there's a whole lot of hurting people in the world, and I just said, Lord, I, you know.

[10:07] You can use me. I want to work with troubled people. I didn't know what that meant. And, uh, I went on to find out, and I was one of them. Hey, how about that? And, but, you know, I've been here now and I think if I count it right, six wardens counting Brian, you know, my sixth warden. I've been here for.

[10:24] Uh, you don't want me to write a book, I could, though. And really, I want to say one more wife was Dolly Frame, and it was Dolly, Ward Frame's wife, who said, Jack, the inmates need God, but she said, please, please don't reach some of these leaders here too.

[10:39] And she was talking about it around Butler, who she loved very much, and I love Warden Frame. But, um, I just go back and just say, I've been encouraged since the day I walked in here in 1973 as a 23-year-old, and I'm 76 in November. God has given a city a mission. He's given us kids clubs, he's given us.

[10:57] The can for kids, she's given us literally reach around the world. I've had a chance to be a chaplain at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I had a chance to be a chaplain for the Commonwealth Prayer Breakfast, a national prayer breakfast, United Nations Valley Forge Leadership Prayer Breakfast.

[11:13] and Boyman Leadership Institute, which has gone all over the world, and it's on the walls here, and it's been here for many, many years. And what I want to say to this county is what you've allowed me to do here beginning has gone deeper and deeper and deeper.

[11:28] But it's also something that has gone literally all over the world. We've hosted Romanian police leaders. We've hosted, you know, men and women from all over the world in countries that have fallen or risen up from communism. This jail has literally.

[11:45] I've touched the world. The one thing that I feel I did not do on two weeks ago was say a proper thank you. Even the president judged, I failed to even recognize.

[11:56] It was a blur looking at that audience, and my tears were in my eyes. But again, I wanted to say personally, uh, thank you to see my three sons there, um, and Commissioner Maxwell, uh, the staff at the jail, the chaplaincy.

[12:12] the religious volunteers. There are so many, and so many of them were in the audience that day. There was a group of men there that are from a ministry called Onesimus Prison Ministry, and I think every single one of them is an ex-offendor. So, all those men were in prison. They did talk. But they were part of our chaplaincy now, and doing volunteer work with our prisoners. They were all there. I had a chance to say thank you to them.

[12:33] And and so I just want to publicly say thank you for all of you, your departments have encouraged me. The Das through the years, literally the sheriffs through the years, the wardens, the commissioners. I go back and remember DT Marone.

[12:50] Lowry Wood, when he was a controller, he became my favorite judge. He was my favorite judge. And I can tell you why sometimes. Robert Thompson, Leo McDermott. And who can forget, my goodness, I'm just forgetting, I'll forget to try to say the name.

[13:06] But again, I need to talk another time. There's so much on my heart. But I thought today I I would leave you with something. I gave it to our work here, and he did whatever he wanted to do with it. And it's something that I I put together.

[13:22] Because it kind of encompasses a scripture that I love with all my heart, and it basically says, I will stand my watch, wait to see what he, the Lord, says to me. And when he has counseled me, then I will speak. The idea is basically Jack, don't talk before you check with God.

[13:39] good rule of thumb. And and so I had this plaque made with that scripture on it, and I actually, because I work so much with police, and and I was at the tomb of the unknown soldier. I actually put on here the the Sentinel, what is it?

[13:54] The Sentinel and the Point Man. And the reason I say Sentinel is the watchman at the tomb and Point Man is something that's been in 90 nations around the world.

[14:05] To the former Assistant Chief of LA. Underneath it, I put posture and prayer. So, the posture of the heart of a leader.

[14:12] And and then this scripture. Anyway, a couple of months ago, I went to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and presented this to the captain of the guard, Captain Sean Paul Stovarsky. And, um, and I knew they did a billion.

[14:26] people give them stuff, and I said, do what you want with it. You can throw it in the closet, you can throw it away, whatever you want to do, I'm just presenting it to you guys here at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the great work you do. And he received it, and about 4 days later, he showed me a picture. He hung this.

[14:42] His copy, right next to the last review mirror of the Sentinels before they walked the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. So, as far as I know, it's still hanging there. They get to see it twice on the wall. They move Kennedy's picture up here and put mine down here, and it actually reflects in the mirror for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

[15:00] And so today I put on the back of this, and I'm done. Given with a grateful heart.

[15:06] And again, August the 19th, 2026, the Chester County Commissioners from Jack Grant's Chaplin County, Chester County Prison. I just put after 53 years in Chester County Prison, I realized more and more the goodness and mercy of God in my own life.

[15:22] unworthy as I am, the Lord is my hope.

[15:26] And I just said Habakkuk 2:1 describes for me the necessity of our posture to know the counsel of God. This very same flag hangs in the sentinel's quarters next to the final mirror of a personal review to the unknown Soldier. So, I'm just going to give it to you, and God, could you take it home? That's not illegal. I'll say it publicly.

[15:44] If it ends up on the wall somewhere at the county, that's fine. If you throw it in a closet as one more gift, that's fine too. I'm never going to ask, but it's

[15:55] my way of saying things. I just go ahead. I'm done.

[16:03] I think I say competently that we'll hang up proudly publicly in the commissioner's office, all the commissioners you've worked with can be represented with this on all the ones in the future too, because we hope you're not leaving.

[16:14] I

[16:15] don't plan to leave.

[16:16] I've got forced stage cancer for three and a half years and I'm still here, and that's… and I'm planning to keep going as long as the Lord lets me. And, by the way, I pray our perpetuity will be great if you let us, so we'll see what God does. But right now, I'm still here, unless you fire me.

[16:31] So the thanks is on

[16:32] our side because of what you've done. It's just tremendous. People brag about you throughout the county and talk about your service here, and it's not just this room. These churches all corners on the Utah. So we helped, and I know one of your sons very well. What?

[16:47] brought to himself as as exhibited through them in perpetuity hundreds of thousands of people being helped by your park, and why you chosen to share with people. So I'll leave with that.

[16:58] I'm just

[16:59] giving you these notes because it's going to show you how long I can trim.

[17:02] I just like personally thank you for all your years. I couldn't make your event. I saw

[17:09] pictures, and

[17:10] it was incredible, and certainly the flag was amazing. And wonderful and deserving. So it's not an easy job.

[17:17] But I do have the grace and the patience. I think 60

[17:21] guys yesterday that came to chapel to speak to, and for an hour and 5 hour and 15 min they listened to me, and I'm telling you, they they were quiet, and you get hugs and applause and.

[17:33] I mean, it's just unbelievable, the reception is just unbelievable. And I'll say this, it starts in the gates.

[17:40] and Grant. I want to thank you for committing your service. I've been following along with you since I was 5 years old. My

[17:47] church has been

[17:48] working with you for many over the years.

[17:51] And folks who come here to this prison are often at the lowest point in their lives, and this is where they need to meet the Lord Jesus in a real way. And they can't do that without someone pointing them in the right direction on being that person.

[18:06] and we're doing our best to meet the needs of every faith, which we know I have to do as a chaplain, and I'm doing that, and it's a hard job, and in this crazy world, too, you can just see what's going on outside. But we're ministering to their families and the kids all summer in our camp. I mean, I go to chapel when I'm Mr. Jack in there.

[18:24] And I got guys sitting there, they were this little. They're now big men, but they still call you Mr. Jack. It doesn't change. So, but again, it's men like the wardens, the staff.

[20:12] not sustained in that way. They… it's harder for them to handle themselves mentally and physically

[20:19] Second of all, my son was talking about his mattress and how, like, the edges don't even exist. They just, I guess the mattress is so old that it's just not in very good condition

[20:34] And I'm just, he seems to think that there are mattresses available, but they're, you know, they're not getting passed out. So I'm wondering how often you guys look at mattresses

[20:46] Same with the shoes. You know, when we visit, he comes in and the shoes are in pretty bad shape. Just how often does that get cycled through with those canvas shoes? Clearly, they're not the kind that are going to hold up very well

[21:06] Again, any kind of pride that they can have in themselves helps with their behavior. Coordination of mental health. I just whenever there are family members who have been a part of their

[21:21] Relatives mental health for

[21:24] As long as I have been or others have been, I think that that needs to be given more weight in the prison system, allowing us to be a part of the conversation so that they can get the best mental health they can, whether it's inside

[21:39] Or when they're put into programs on the outside. My son had two failed programs because no one

[21:45] Listen to anything I had to say, and that was very, very stressful, not only on him, but on his family.

[21:53] A good point here, just to end on a happy note, the visitation hours have been honored. There has always been an officer down there opening on time and all the families really appreciate that

[22:09] I may have mentioned this last time, but if there could be a sign

[22:14] On the window where people come in that talk about these meetings, if they're able to make it so that they can have a part of the process. I think that is very important to give voice to the families.
