our land..
[14:10]
>> we should take a
[14:12]
moment on which we are
[14:13]
gathered for.
[14:13]
Thousands of years,
[14:14]
this land has been the
[14:17]
home of people. Today
[14:18]
there are three
[14:19]
federally. United win
[14:21]
tribes. Indians of the
[14:22]
calusa indian
[14:24]
community dehe wintun
[14:27]
nation. And wintun
[14:28]
nation. The people
[14:29]
have remained
[14:30]
committed to the
[14:30]
stewardship of this
[14:31]
land for centuries. It
[14:33]
has been cherished and
[14:34]
protected as elders
[14:35]
have instructed the
[14:36]
young through
[14:37]
generations. We
[14:38]
honored and grateful to
[14:40]
be here today on their
[14:41]
traditional lands.
[14:42]
Thank you.
[14:43]
>> thank you. Trustee
[14:44]
denunzio, will you lead
[14:46]

[15:29]

[15:31]
the agenda is before
[15:31]

[15:32]

[15:35]

[15:35]
>> second.
[15:36]
>> it's been moved by
[15:37]
greenwald, seconded by
[15:39]
vice PRESIDENT Darrah.
[15:40]
All in favor?
[15:41]
>> aye
[15:44]
>> any opposed?
[15:45]
Abstentions. So the
[15:48]
agenda is approved nw
[15:49]
we have staff
[15:50]
recognitions
[15:52]
>> not. This week.
[15:53]
Week.
[15:55]
>> so we move on to
[15:58]
announcements and all
[15:59]
yours. Great.
[16:00]
>> I want to take a
[16:01]
minute to acknowledge
[16:02]
the tremendous amount
[16:03]
of professional
[16:04]
development. That's
[16:05]
been taking place over
[16:07]
the past couple of
[16:08]
weeks. As we get ready
[16:10]
to welcome students
[16:13]
back on tuesday. The
[16:14]
friday, friday, we had
[16:15]
all new special
[16:17]
education staff for an
[16:19]
orientation on
[16:20]
tuesday, had all of
[16:21]
our new our new
[16:23]
teacher orientation
[16:25]
wednesday. Was new
[16:27]
teacher udl
[16:29]
orientation we had
[16:30]
session, pilot
[16:32]
training district wide
[16:33]
professional
[16:34]
development training
[16:35]
for all teachers,
[16:37]
educators. About the
[16:38]
conditions and
[16:39]
routines for high
[16:39]
functioning
[16:41]
collaborative teams
[16:42]
within 600 attendees.
[16:44]
Today and all of our
[16:46]
staff are back at
[16:48]
their sites. Tomorrow.
[16:50]
We hope you will all
[16:50]
join us for the back
[16:52]
to school breakfast
[16:55]
and get to work. While
[16:56]
these different
[16:57]
learning opportunities
[16:58]
are all different kinds
[16:59]
of learning
[16:59]
opportunities, they
[17:00]
all connect to a
[17:02]
larger we have to
[17:03]
making sure that
[17:04]
continue to do the
[17:05]
important work of
[17:06]
improving student
[17:08]
outcomes. As that's
[17:08]
really at the center of
[17:12]
what we do next slide.
[17:13]
Nope. That's it. Yep.
[17:15]
Thank you. Rambling on
[17:17]
today. So and as we
[17:18]
get ready for the
[17:19]
welcome to welcome
[17:20]
students back, I want
[17:21]
to offer one more
[17:21]
reminder to our
[17:22]
community about our way
[17:23]
for the day mobile
[17:26]
device policy, which
[17:26]
begins on the very
[17:26]
first day. As soon as
[17:28]
students arrive on
[17:29]
kiss under this
[17:30]
policy, stool, turn
[17:31]
off and put away their
[17:32]
personal mobile
[17:34]
devices, including cell
[17:36]
phones, smartwatches
[17:36]
for the duration of the
[17:39]
day. We know big
[17:39]
change, especially at
[17:41]
our secondary level,
[17:41]
but we also see it as
[17:42]
an opportunity. The
[17:44]
goal is to create more
[17:45]
focused learning
[17:46]
environments. Reduce
[17:47]
distractions and give
[17:49]
students more
[17:49]
opportunities to be
[17:49]
present with their
[17:52]
teachers classmates
[17:53]
and the experience is
[17:54]
around them. We want
[17:55]
our campuses to be a
[17:56]
place where students
[17:58]
can connect
[17:58]
participate, and engage
[17:59]
in school day. If you
[18:01]
or your students have
[18:01]
questions, you can
[18:03]
check out our faq on
[18:05]
our web or connect
[18:07]
with your school
[18:09]
principal. So I also
[18:10]
want to remind our
[18:11]
community partners and
[18:12]
that peach jar are
[18:14]
digital flyer platform
[18:16]
will open for the year
[18:18]
on monday, AUGUST 31st,
[18:19]
with the first flyers
[18:20]
going out to families
[18:21]
friday, SEPTEMBER
[18:23]
fourth, fourth. Peach
[18:23]
jar is a great
[18:25]
resource for sharing
[18:27]
district information
[18:28]
with our families.
[18:29]
Whether it's an
[18:30]
upcoming event
[18:31]
program, community
[18:33]
resource, or other for
[18:33]
students. If you're a
[18:34]
community organization
[18:35]
or interested in
[18:36]
sharing information
[18:37]
this year, you can
[18:39]
find everything you
[18:41]
need. Our website at
[18:44]
slash next and as we
[18:46]
get ready for our first
[18:47]
day, I want to send a
[18:49]
big thank you to the
[18:50]
administrative staff
[18:51]
who have been working
[18:52]
throughout the summer
[18:53]
to get our campuses
[18:55]
ready. Hired supplies
[18:56]
ordered, and all the
[18:57]
other essential tasks
[19:00]
needed to successfully
[19:01]
launch the school
[19:02]
year. I've seen so
[19:04]
much happening over the
[19:04]
course of this last
[19:07]
week. To get campuses
[19:09]
cleaned up and spruced
[19:10]
up and ready for
[19:12]
school. We're also
[19:13]
excited to welcome our
[19:15]
families and staff back
[19:15]
to the start of the
[19:16]
new school year. We'll
[19:18]
be welcoming our
[19:19]
trustees at our next
[19:20]
board meeting and
[19:21]
we're really looking
[19:22]
forward to seeing our
[19:23]
campuses come back to
[19:24]
life. I hope everyone
[19:25]
has a full final few
[19:26]
days of summer. I
[19:27]
think for all of us,
[19:28]
staff, it's pretty much
[19:30]
over and we can't wait
[19:31]
to see you all on
[19:32]
tuesday.
[19:34]
>> thank you. And now
[19:36]
it's time for fom our
[19:38]
davis association
[19:39]
PRESIDENT Amanda
[19:45]
rales.
[19:46]
>> good evening,
[19:50]
PRESIDENT Jackson best
[19:52]
and I am so excited to
[19:54]
reunite colleagues
[19:54]
tomorrow as we return
[19:56]
to work and prepare for
[19:57]
our sins. But I am
[19:58]
even more excited to
[19:59]
greet my new first
[20:01]
graders next week. I
[20:02]
love getting to know
[20:03]
them, helping them
[20:04]
grow and learn to be
[20:04]
the best little humans
[20:06]
they can be. But right
[20:07]
now they aren't the
[20:08]
only thing I'm
[20:10]
thinking about as I'm
[20:11]
sure you've been
[20:12]
informed by district
[20:13]
staff, we had to reach
[20:15]
a tentative agreement
[20:16]
educators will start
[20:17]
the year with an
[20:19]
expired contract do not
[20:19]
want to edit the
[20:20]
progress that has been
[20:22]
made, but the work is
[20:24]
not done have reached
[20:25]
agreement on several
[20:27]
matters of working
[20:27]
conditions, for we
[20:29]
know that our working
[20:29]
conditions are our
[20:31]
students learning
[20:32]
conditions. And our
[20:33]
members have made it
[20:34]
clear what. Also
[20:34]
continues to be a
[20:36]
priority for them.
[20:37]
Their livelihoods
[20:39]
every time we have
[20:40]
been airplane. Flight
[20:41]
attendants deliver a
[20:43]
universal survival
[20:44]
secure your own.
[20:45]
Oxygen mask. Before
[20:46]
helping others. This is
[20:47]
not a land
[20:49]
selfishness. It is a
[20:50]
matter of basic
[20:51]
survival if you run out
[20:53]
of oxygen, not save
[20:54]
the person sitting next
[20:55]
to you, you cannot
[20:56]
help a child. If you
[20:58]
pass out from
[21:00]
exhaustion. Now, in our
[21:00]
schools, the cabin
[21:02]
pressure is dropping.
[21:03]
Our are suffocating
[21:04]
under the financial
[21:05]
weight of
[21:06]
uncompetitive salaries
[21:07]
and skyrocketing
[21:08]
health insurance
[21:09]
premiums. We have
[21:10]
heard from members who
[21:11]
face no option other
[21:13]
than living with their
[21:13]
parents, because they
[21:15]
simply cannot afford
[21:17]
rent. I mention a
[21:18]
their own. We have
[21:21]
heard from members the
[21:22]
have had to make about
[21:23]
not having children of
[21:25]
their own. Right now.
[21:25]
Of the cost of family
[21:26]
health care for them
[21:28]
is dramatically out of
[21:30]
reach another little
[21:32]
not so fun fact. An
[21:32]
educator in
[21:34]
neighboring west
[21:35]
sacramento. Same
[21:36]
western health family
[21:38]
offered here. Can take
[21:42]
home. 72. Dollars a us
[21:42]
educator on the same
[21:44]
step in column
[21:46]
equivalent would take
[21:48]
home 44. Dollars for
[21:49]
years, teachers have
[21:50]
been told to ignore
[21:51]
their own economic
[21:52]
bible. We are told to
[21:54]
keep sacrificing kids
[21:56]
and we do. We love our
[21:57]
students but you
[21:58]
cannot perform an empty
[21:59]
cup and you cannot
[22:00]
teach effectively when
[22:02]
you are gasping for
[22:05]
financial air this is
[22:06]
putting on their
[22:08]
oxygen masks when a
[22:10]
teacher has to take a
[22:10]
second job just to pay
[22:11]
rent, or when a
[22:12]
veteran educator
[22:13]
leaves our district
[22:14]
because their take home
[22:15]
pay is eaten alive by
[22:17]
rising health benefit
[22:18]
costs. Students suffer
[22:20]
the consequences. They
[22:23]
lose lose mentors, and
[22:24]
they lose the high
[22:25]
quality education they
[22:27]
deserve. Providing
[22:28]
competitive salaries
[22:30]
and reliable not a
[22:32]
interest with student
[22:32]
success. It is the
[22:34]
exact framework
[22:34]
required to make
[22:35]
students success
[22:37]
possible when we sit at
[22:38]
the bargaining table
[22:39]
and ask for fair wages
[22:41]
and affordable health
[22:42]
care, we are nodding
[22:44]
for luxuries. Dta has
[22:45]
consistently proposed
[22:46]
language that states
[22:47]
the district will
[22:48]
provide full coverage
[22:50]
of the lowest
[22:50]
insurance for the
[22:51]
employee. The district
[22:52]
will not commit
[22:53]
typekit language and
[22:54]
continues to propose
[22:56]
set dollar amounts
[22:57]
amounts that quickly
[22:59]
get overtaken by rate
[23:00]
increases that are then
[23:01]
absorbed by our
[23:02]
educators paychecks.
[23:05]
Is this board from
[23:06]
commitment? You say you
[23:07]
are to doing the right
[23:10]
thing. Chance. He
[23:10]
cannot successfully
[23:12]
guide our students to a
[23:12]
bright future. If the
[23:13]
adults in the
[23:14]
classroom are starved
[23:15]
of the rsources they
[23:17]
need to survive. I
[23:17]
urge this board to
[23:18]
invest in the people
[23:20]
who invest in our
[23:21]
children. Give our
[23:22]
educators the oxygen
[23:23]
they need so they can
[23:24]
focus on giving our
[23:25]
students what they
[23:27]
deserve. Best. Thank
[23:29]
you..
[23:30]
>> thank you. It's now
[23:31]
time to report from
[23:33]
our california. School
[23:35]
employees association
[23:46]
runyon
[23:47]
>> evening, PRESIDENT
[23:50]
Jackson and community
[23:51]
members here in
[23:52]
chambers. And join us
[23:54]
from home. My name is

[24:00]

[24:02]
I was sick. But I'm
[24:04]
back. As we begin a
[24:04]
new school year, we
[24:07]
have an opportunity to
[24:08]
together. Refocus and
[24:09]
recommit to the work
[24:11]
that matters most.
[24:12]
Supporting our
[24:14]

[24:21]
every day, each of us
[24:22]
plays a vital role in
[24:23]
creating schools. Or
[24:25]
students serve and
[24:26]
together we are
[24:27]
stronger and w can
[24:30]
make a difference over
[24:31]
the summer, csea
[24:33]
chapter five. 72 was
[24:33]
proud to send seven
[24:36]
delegates to csas
[24:38]
100th. 100th annual
[24:39]
conference. They were
[24:41]
joined by more than
[24:42]
2000 fellow classified
[24:42]
professionals from
[24:43]
across california and
[24:46]
our participated in
[24:47]
discussions
[24:48]
resolutions. That
[24:49]
helped shape future of
[24:52]
our association. It
[24:54]
was an opportunity to
[24:55]
bring the voice of
[24:56]
davis to the table,
[24:57]
learn from csea
[24:58]
members across across
[25:00]
the state and stand
[25:02]
together as large for
[25:03]
classified employees
[25:05]
in public education.
[25:06]
We are proud of our
[25:07]
delegates and the work
[25:11]
represent davis..
[25:11]
Shifting gears later
[25:13]
this evening, chief
[25:14]

[25:15]
scott thompson will
[25:16]

preparations that have
[25:25]
place across our
[25:26]
schools. This summer,
[25:28]
including technology.
[25:29]
Updates, grounds
[25:30]
preparation services
[25:32]
and deep cleaning our
[25:33]
custodial staff. It is
[25:34]
important to recognize
[25:35]
that classified
[25:36]
employees who have
[25:37]
been doing this work
[25:38]
throughout the summer
[25:39]
months. Much of this
[25:40]
work is performed
[25:41]
behind the scenes, but
[25:43]
it is absolutely
[25:44]
essential to the of
[25:46]
this district at the
[25:48]
same time, I do want to
[25:50]
make an important
[25:50]
distinction that not
[25:52]
every task represented
[25:52]
in this presentation
[25:54]
was completed by
[25:56]
classified saff we
[25:57]
recognize that there
[25:58]
are times wen outside
[26:00]
contractors and other
[26:01]
resource necessary.
[26:03]
However, csea believes
[26:03]
we should always make
[26:05]
an effort to keep
[26:06]
classified work in the
[26:08]
hands of classified
[26:10]
employees our
[26:10]
classified staff have
[26:11]
the knowledge and
[26:12]
experience to serve
[26:14]
our schools. Excuse me
[26:16]
and our students work
[26:17]
that belongs within
[26:18]
our bargaining unit
[26:19]
performed by our
[26:21]
bargaining unit
[26:21]
members. We are not
[26:23]
only supporting our
[26:24]
members, we are
[26:25]
investing in long
[26:26]
capacity and stability
[26:31]
of being said, we would
[26:32]
like to thank the for
[26:35]
its regarding outside
[26:36]
contracts. We
[26:37]
appreciate the
[26:37]
transparency and
[26:38]
collaboration in
[26:40]
keeping the
[26:41]
association informed,
[26:41]
ensuring that we have
[26:43]
an opportunity to
[26:44]
discuss these matters.
[26:46]
When it's appropriate
[26:47]
.. Now, in
[26:48]
negotiations starting
[26:49]
in SEPTEMBER, csea
[26:50]
wants to emphasize
[26:53]
that the importance of
[26:53]
investing in your
[26:55]
people. Like
[26:56]
classified staff,
[26:57]
continue to face
[26:59]
increasing financial
[27:00]
pressures while being
[27:02]
asked to do more with
[27:03]
limited resources. The
[27:04]
cost of living
[27:06]
continues to rise and
[27:07]
reality is that many
[27:08]
classified employees
[27:09]
are struggling to keep
[27:12]
up they are not asking
[27:13]
excuse m, they are
[27:15]
not asking for special
[27:16]
treatment. They're
[27:17]
asking for one simple
[27:19]
thing for one job to
[27:21]
be enough a career
[27:22]
serving pblic
[27:24]
education, not require
[27:25]
someone to take on a
[27:26]
second job. Just food
[27:29]
on their table.
[27:30]
Classified and are
[27:31]
asking that the work
[27:32]
they every day.
[27:32]
Supporting our
[27:33]
students. Allows them
[27:35]
to provide families
[27:36]
and all the secure
[27:40]
future with the recent
[27:41]
announcement of 2020.
[27:41]
Health care premium
[27:42]
changes through
[27:43]
calpers. Some of the
[27:44]
district's health care
[27:45]
plans for classified
[27:47]
staff are excited to
[27:50]
increase up to 11% for
[27:51]
classified employees.
[27:52]
These increases are
[27:53]
not just numbers on a
[27:55]
budget document. They
[27:57]
represent real
[27:58]
decisions about
[28:00]
housing and
[28:00]
transportation to and
[28:04]
from work. And whether
[28:06]
they can afford to
[28:06]
whether they continue
[28:07]
to afford the benefits
[28:09]
they work hard for to
[28:13]
earn over the year has
[28:14]
rebuilding and
[28:15]
strengthening our
[28:16]
organization as I
[28:17]
stated at the end of
[28:18]
last school year, we
[28:19]
have grown our
[28:20]
membership expanded our
[28:21]
representation across
[28:23]
our school sites and
[28:24]
departments, and built
[28:25]
a stronger foundation
[28:27]
for the future of
[28:29]
chapter five. 72. This
[28:30]
year we are continuing
[28:33]
that momentum will
[28:34]
continue bringing
[28:35]
classified voices to
[28:37]
the table, continuing.
[28:38]
Collaterally
[28:38]
collaboratively with
[28:40]
strict and continue
[28:42]
for the and
[28:42]
recognition that our
[28:46]
members deserve csc is
[28:46]
members proud of the
[28:48]
work they do and proud
[28:50]
to continue standing
[28:55]
together. Thank you.
[28:57]
>> so our students who
[28:59]
would be here on the
[29:00]
board as sudent
[29:01]
trustees, are
[29:01]
currently on summer
[29:03]
break. We expect them
[29:05]
in on SEPTEMBER third.
[29:07]
we'll now have
[29:07]
comments from board
[29:08]
members, and we'll
[29:10]
start with trustee
[29:11]
dinunzio..
[29:11]
>> thank you,
[29:14]
PRESIDENT Jackson. I
[29:18]
want to echo comments.
[29:18]
The first day of school
[29:20]
is fabulous. I look
[29:22]
forward to visiting as
[29:23]
campus possible and
[29:26]
yes are slightly more
[29:26]
enjoyable and adorable
[29:31]
than 12th graders. Jp
[29:32]
but I look forward to
[29:33]
going to willett
[29:34]
emerson and da vinci
[29:36]
junior high and north
[29:37]
davis. And yes, davis,
[29:38]
high and hopefully as
[29:40]
many as I possibly can
[29:42]
exciting for tuesday.
[29:43]
So I had the great
[29:44]
opportunity over the &
[29:46]
past week to take my
[29:47]
student to mexico
[29:50]
city. For a cultural
[29:52]
learning. Adventure
[29:53]
and I don't want to
[29:55]
talk too much about it
[29:55]
because I know we have
[29:56]
many things to get to,
[29:58]
but it was
[29:58]
transformational, I
[29:59]
think, for the both of
[30:01]
us. I've been to many
[30:02]
times for work. It's
[30:04]
very different though,
[30:05]
to learn about the
[30:06]
culture, about the
[30:08]
architecture about the
[30:11]
history and we started
[30:13]
to and truly
[30:14]
phenomenal
[30:16]
understanding culture
[30:18]
that american culture.
[30:19]
Over hundreds and
[30:21]
hundreds of years you
[30:25]
know museo nacional
[30:27]
and anthropology was
[30:28]
perhaps the most
[30:32]
impressive been in a
[30:35]
story of a people that
[30:37]
had an incredible
[30:38]
understanding of the
[30:39]
connection between the
[30:40]
physical world and the
[30:43]
spiritual world. The
[30:45]
de bellas artes. And
[30:46]
later at unam, being
[30:48]
able to see the
[30:51]
architecture and the
[30:52]
exterior use of it in
[30:53]
murals and design, not
[30:56]
just in art but in the
[30:58]
actual architecture.
[31:00]
The biblioteca central
[31:03]
and the rectoria just
[31:04]
phenomenal, and I think
[31:06]
that for us it's just a
[31:08]
reminder that travel is
[31:09]
a privilege. There's no
[31:10]
doubt about it. But
[31:11]
when you can go and
[31:12]
read all of these
[31:13]
places in books, when
[31:14]
you can go and be in
[31:16]
the place and see the
[31:17]
people and have the
[31:19]
conversations, it's
[31:21]
just phenomenally
[31:22]
transformational and
[31:25]
for me, it just and I
[31:25]
talk a moment about a
[31:27]
book that I got
[31:28]
because of it, but
[31:30]
just the blending and
[31:32]
modern traditions. Of
[31:34]
art and food and
[31:37]
architecture. Felt
[31:38]
extraordinarily so. I
[31:39]
look forward to going
[31:41]
back very soon. Okay,
[31:46]
so to books. And m
[31:47]
first one is called
[31:50]
the home builders. And
[31:52]
the author. Is a woman
[31:56]
named vasa she's from
[31:57]
mumbai and the
[31:59]
illustrator is a woman
[32:03]
named symona mollasani
[32:05]
an interesting
[32:06]
combination of two very
[32:07]
different cultures.
[32:09]
Simona is from italy.
[32:10]
And you can see the
[32:11]
illustrations are
[32:12]
phenomenal. And the
[32:14]
text is the kind of
[32:16]
book to read to your
[32:19]
young reader different
[32:20]
animals and how they
[32:22]
build homes and it's a
[32:24]
very simple story
[32:26]
about safety and
[32:26]
belonging and being
[32:29]
part of things and a
[32:31]
reminder, again, that
[32:32]
curiosity often gets
[32:34]
by sopping long
[32:36]
enough to notice book
[32:37]
the artwork is
[32:38]
fantastic, by the way,
[32:42]
a fine so first
[32:42]
weekend of every
[32:45]
month. It's fantastic.
[32:47]
Okay, my second book is
[32:51]
for for young adults
[32:52]
mature adults, but I
[32:53]
know that our students
[32:55]
in early high school
[32:58]
do very well set a
[32:59]
watchman by harper lee
[33:00]
and certain that many
[33:03]
of you know this book
[33:04]
it is an interesting
[33:06]
companion to kill a
[33:07]
mockingbird. In part
[33:08]
because a lot
[33:09]
>> out of the
[33:09]
characters.
[33:11]
>> and mockingbird out
[33:12]
to be human and not
[33:13]
perfect. Like many of
[33:16]
us and it really poses
[33:18]
the question of what
[33:20]
happens when we really
[33:22]
admire and what does it
[33:24]
do. About our moral
[33:26]
beliefs. I think in
[33:29]
particular me I was
[33:31]
interesting because
[33:32]
harper lee writing
[33:34]
this book before she
[33:35]
wrote to kill a
[33:36]
mockingbird. That was
[33:37]
published obviously
[33:38]
much, much later. And
[33:39]
so it's interesting to
[33:41]
look at how her
[33:43]
thinking evolved a
[33:45]
fantastic book. Many
[33:47]
of our students I know
[33:48]
mockingbird strongly
[33:49]
urge you to read
[33:50]
harper lee's book. Go
[33:55]
set a watchman more I
[33:57]
mentioned my trip got
[33:59]
me really curious
[34:03]
about the mexica and
[34:06]
the nahua culture book
[34:08]
is called aztec and
[34:10]
culture. It's by
[34:13]
leon-portilla is a
[34:16]
phenomenal.. Overview
[34:19]
of the philosophy.
[34:19]
Worldview. I think
[34:21]
what's particularly
[34:21]
interesting about it
[34:23]
is the duality, the
[34:24]
balance between fire
[34:26]
and water, between the
[34:27]
male and the female
[34:28]
chaos and order,
[34:30]
between the living
[34:31]
world and post living
[34:35]
world I think the the
[34:37]
exploration for me.
[34:38]
Was really about
[34:39]
understanding that many
[34:40]
of the ancient
[34:41]
cultures deep wisdom
[34:43]
that we sometimes
[34:46]
forget wonderful book
[34:49]
and then last other
[34:51]
than my book. Is one
[34:53]
that many of you are
[34:54]
familiar with. It's
[34:55]
called the left hand
[34:57]
of darkness. By ursula
[34:59]
le guin actually
[35:01]
recommended to me by
[35:02]
one of the english
[35:04]
teachers. I read it
[35:05]
when I was a teenager.
[35:06]
It was
[35:06]
transformational. I
[35:07]
read it as a young
[35:08]
adult. It was
[35:09]
transformational
[35:10]
again, and I just read
[35:12]
it this summer and
[35:14]
once again, I wouldn't
[35:15]
call this necessarily
[35:15]
a banned book.
[35:17]
Certainly a book that
[35:19]
many people create a
[35:20]
creates discomfort.
[35:22]
And I think in part is
[35:23]
because it is such a
[35:24]
different worldview
[35:25]
from our own. When you
[35:27]
think about gender and
[35:30]
not being binary and
[35:32]
in a world where
[35:35]
things are in
[35:36]
framework that we start
[35:38]
with is fundamentally
[35:40]
not part of this could
[35:41]
not recommend this
[35:44]
book more strongly is
[35:45]
one of the true great
[35:47]
authors of the 20th
[35:49]
century. And I think
[35:50]
it really helps the
[35:51]
setting, the science
[35:52]
fiction really helps
[35:54]
us to question a lot of
[35:56]
our belief systems and
[35:57]
we think that kind of
[35:58]
curiosity is always a
[35:59]
good thing. And
[36:01]
similarly, not over to
[36:04]
you. So this is davis
[36:09]
farmers the wonderful
[36:09]
50th anniversary of
[36:11]
farmers market was
[36:13]
last month. This book
[36:13]
was written by george
[36:15]
an brennan and or own
[36:17]
anne evans. What's
[36:17]
great about this book
[36:19]
is one. It's agreat
[36:21]
cookbook and number
[36:23]
two, it is signed by
[36:25]
the authors and I got
[36:26]
at the friends of the
[36:28]
library sale for $1.
[36:30]
So this will go in our
[36:32]
little library? Nope.
[36:33]
It goes to troy.
[36:34]
Ellen, because I
[36:34]
promised the would
[36:37]
have library, but you
[36:38]
can pick up a copy
[36:41]
there often at at the
[36:42]
library sale. Thank you
[36:44]
very much. Chris and
[36:45]
jackson
[36:49]
>> not a bad book..
[36:58]
>> see...
[37:00]
>> that not be banned.
[37:01]
And evans is an
[37:05]
amazing.. Thank you.
[37:08]
Thank you. I would say
[37:09]
as we open our doors
[37:12]
for the 2627 school
[37:13]
year I'm very thrilled
[37:16]
to welcome back our
[37:17]
educators. Our
[37:18]
classified staff
[37:22]
students and families
[37:22]
start of the school
[37:24]
year, it always brings
[37:26]
a unique wave of,
[37:29]
energy optimism, and
[37:32]
opportunity kids and I
[37:34]
want to say it again,
[37:35]
our educators and
[37:36]
support staff, thank
[37:38]
you so much for being
[37:39]
work that you've done
[37:42]
over summer educating
[37:44]
our students went to
[37:46]
school and preparing
[37:47]
our schools and getting
[37:48]
ready for the start of
[37:50]
the school year. Hard
[37:52]
work over the summer.
[37:53]
preparing our campuses
[37:55]
to be safe vibrant
[37:57]
spaces for our
[37:58]
students is very much
[38:00]
appreciated. I part
[38:02]
of. Just and we are
[38:03]
really grateful to the
[38:05]
work. You make sure
[38:08]
you know that to
[38:11]
welcome back as
[38:12]
superintendent already
[38:16]
mentioned we are a new
[38:19]
new time in or south
[38:19]
going to be away for
[38:21]
the day. I've already
[38:23]
had pushback from two
[38:25]
kids. That's not fair.
[38:27]
You know, on and on.
[38:29]
But I did tell them it
[38:30]
might be a challenge
[38:33]
at first, but I it
[38:34]
accustomed to that
[38:35]
change and teachers
[38:38]
will be able to teach
[38:39]
without interference.
[38:42]
Yay! So I know you can
[38:44]
do so whether you're
[38:46]
student stepping onto
[38:47]
a campus for the very
[38:48]
first time, a little
[38:50]
tk or kindergartner
[38:51]
you're entering your
[38:54]
final year at usd as a
[38:56]
senior, this year is
[38:58]
yours to shape and we
[38:59]
believe in our
[39:00]
potential. Ad I jst
[39:02]
want to say that as a
[39:03]
as a board member, and
[39:04]
I'm sure I speak other
[39:06]
colleagues too we want
[39:08]
your well-being
[39:09]
through the top
[39:09]
priority. Every step
[39:11]
of the way and I just
[39:14]
want to thank you for
[39:15]
your continued
[39:17]
partnership with us.
[39:17]
And we want to make
[39:18]
this a great school
[39:20]
year. So I'm hoping
[39:21]
can collaborate and
[39:22]
just have a great team
[39:25]
of everyone. Thank you
[39:29]
>> you. Vice..
[39:29]
>> thank you,
[39:34]
PRESIDENT Jackson?? I
[39:35]
guess I will share the
[39:36]
comments of my
[39:37]
colleagues and
[39:38]
welcoming people back
[39:40]
to school. Special
[39:42]
thanks to everyone
[39:44]
behind the scenes to
[39:47]
be ready for safe..
[39:49]
When came up and and
[39:50]
just shared her
[39:52]
enthusiasm for her
[39:52]
first classroom, and
[39:53]
we feel that as
[39:54]
parents, we walk into a
[39:55]
classroom. We can just
[39:56]
feel that good energy
[39:57]
and there's a special
[39:57]
sauce you bring into
[39:59]
the room that feels so
[40:00]
good. And those
[40:01]
parents drop off those
[40:03]
kids on that first day
[40:03]
and gets kids excited
[40:04]
about their, you know,
[40:05]
new backpack and their
[40:06]
new markers and all
[40:08]
those things. So thank
[40:09]
you. And hopefully
[40:12]
that same energy does
[40:12]
extend to our 12th
[40:13]
graders who are
[40:13]
realizing it's our
[40:15]
last year to to be on
[40:17]
their parents dime 24
[40:19]
over seven. So, you
[40:19]
know, I think there's,
[40:21]
there's a lot to be
[40:22]
said. And I want to
[40:23]
acknowledge the, the
[40:24]
work that goes in to
[40:25]
make sure our, our
[40:26]
physical spaces are
[40:27]
ready for our students
[40:28]
as well as the extreme
[40:30]
learning environment.
[40:32]
So thank you. I want to
[40:34]
welcome to our new
[40:35]
employees know,
[40:36]
welcome to dj usd.
[40:37]
Hopefully this will be
[40:38]
a great place for you
[40:40]
to start a rewarding
[40:41]
career and you'll get
[40:43]
to just how special it
[40:43]
is to be in this
[40:44]
district with these,
[40:45]
these kids in this
[40:48]
community. Let's see.
[40:51]
I want to remind
[40:52]
people this is we talk
[40:53]
a lot about safety
[40:56]
here on this dais and
[40:57]
one of the safety is
[40:58]
that our community has
[41:00]
in their control I
[41:02]
around our campuses. I
[41:03]
mean, to and from
[41:04]
around campuses, drop
[41:07]
off pickup is often of
[41:09]
the earliest and most
[41:10]
dangerous, often
[41:12]
pressure time and
[41:13]
constraints. But we
[41:14]
have I want to thank
[41:15]
our crossing guards for
[41:15]
doing the best job
[41:17]
they can often there
[41:18]
are steps outside also
[41:20]
trying to help the
[41:21]
chaos, but we as
[41:22]
community members, as
[41:24]
parents, drop off as a
[41:24]
grandparents sometimes
[41:25]
have to really
[41:26]
remember to build in
[41:27]
the extra few minutes
[41:28]
better to be late than
[41:29]
to have an accident or
[41:30]
hurt a kid, but better
[41:31]
to few minutes early
[41:31]
and not be late at
[41:34]
all. I think everyone
[41:35]
would prefer that, but
[41:35]
let's just keep that
[41:38]
in mind. Because you
[41:39]
kids on bikes for the
[41:40]
first time and figure
[41:42]
out how to navigate in
[41:44]
between everything and
[41:45]
make sure that's a &
[41:46]
safe time. So as much
[41:47]
as we focus on lots of
[41:49]
other let's as a
[41:49]
community pull
[41:50]
together and really
[41:51]
think about safety
[41:53]
around our campuses
[41:53]
particularly
[41:54]
protecting our walkers
[41:56]
and bike riders. So
[42:00]
there's that. Let's see
[42:02]
I want to use this
[42:03]
opportunity to
[42:05]
encourage the toes tas
[42:07]
boosters and other
[42:07]
organizations to
[42:08]
partner with the board
[42:10]
by inviting us to your
[42:11]
events. As you set up
[42:14]
your for the year let
[42:16]
us know about your
[42:18]
your cook offs, all
[42:21]
things we I think I
[42:22]
speak for the lord,
[42:25]
but sure years. When I
[42:26]
was a community leader
[42:27]
here in town, apparent
[42:28]
leader. It was really
[42:29]
meaningful to have
[42:30]
board members at our
[42:31]
events. It's not a
[42:31]
violation to have us
[42:33]
all show up. We will
[42:34]
not be doing board
[42:36]
business at your end,
[42:36]
but it gives us an
[42:38]
opportunity to see
[42:40]
your community, to see
[42:41]
the special things
[42:43]
about your school and
[42:44]
an opportunity to do
[42:45]
that in a really kind
[42:47]
of a fun way. So, so
[42:48]
please consider
[42:51]
inviting us whenever
[42:52]
possible and you know,
[42:52]
we'd like to be there
[42:54]
for those things. I
[42:57]
want to thank the
[42:58]
community members who
[42:59]
reached out to me
[43:01]
variety of topics
[43:03]
getting some
[43:03]
clarification. I
[43:04]
really appreciate
[43:05]
people who are trying
[43:06]
to get information
[43:07]
before they get mad
[43:08]
about something. So
[43:11]
thank you always open.
[43:13]
You can always text me
[43:14]
me down in target or
[43:16]
anywhere else in town
[43:17]
to have a about things
[43:17]
that you need to know
[43:19]
to help support your
[43:23]
student and school. I
[43:24]
think other than that,
[43:26]
I really think
[43:31]
opportunity for..
[43:32]
Parents who start off
[43:34]
this year as real
[43:36]
partners with the
[43:37]
teachers at their site
[43:39]
is a chance. Our.
[43:40]
Lifelong partners
[43:41]
like. Or at least a
[43:43]
good 18 year partners
[43:44]
with the health care
[43:44]
for your children and
[43:45]
teacher. Children with
[43:47]
them and so in any
[43:49]
ways that we can find
[43:51]
collaboration and
[43:52]
cooperation might do
[43:52]
things differently
[43:54]
than you, than you do
[43:55]
at home. They might
[43:57]
say say, take some
[43:58]
time t, you know,
[43:59]
read the newsletter,
[44:01]
the classroom rules,
[44:03]
whatever it is you
[44:03]
reinforce in a way
[44:04]
that support your
[44:05]
students learning and
[44:06]
then, you know, I
[44:07]
encourage you, when you
[44:09]
have questions to
[44:09]
first go to your
[44:10]
teacher and talk to
[44:11]
them. It's just a new
[44:12]
transition time. And
[44:15]
your tells you know
[44:15]
anything or they don't
[44:16]
know or weren't using
[44:17]
the book. It's like
[44:19]
just take asecond,
[44:21]
find out tat we can
[44:21]
have that best
[44:22]
partnership because I
[44:23]
think at the end of
[44:24]
the day, we want what's
[44:25]
best for your students
[44:25]
and those those
[44:26]
members who are
[44:27]
teachers and staff
[44:28]
members who are working
[44:29]
with them, truly want
[44:31]
that. But it is best
[44:32]
usually, and most
[44:32]
successful when you're
[44:33]
the true partnership.
[44:35]
So I just encourage
[44:36]
our families to
[44:37]
consider that. And for
[44:38]
our students to
[44:39]
consider that as well.
[44:42]
Welcome back thank you
[44:45]
>> you, PRESIDENT
[44:47]
Trustee
[44:48]
>> it off. Can I just
[44:50]
put a big check mark
[44:52]
and say ditto. But no
[44:53]
honestly, I really want
[44:55]
to give a huge thank
[44:57]
you to all of our csea
[44:58]
folks who have worked
[44:59]
so hard over the
[45:02]
summer to really make
[45:03]
next week. Possible to
[45:04]
really putting our
[45:05]
schools together and
[45:06]
making an environment
[45:08]
where people feel
[45:09]
welcomed and, and they
[45:10]
have a sense of
[45:12]
belonging. On our
[45:13]
campuses. So thank you
[45:15]
to all members who have
[45:17]
worked so hard this
[45:19]
summer. To all our
[45:19]
educators and those
[45:20]
who have spent this
[45:22]
summer learning for
[45:23]
themselves, who have
[45:24]
spent the time
[45:26]
mentally preparing,
[45:28]
who has spent the time
[45:29]
actually preparing,
[45:31]
going ice that I would
[45:32]
go through a. I would
[45:34]
be like on a little
[45:34]
vacation, I'd end up in
[45:35]
a store and I'd be
[45:36]
like, oh, that would be
[45:37]
perfect for my
[45:38]
classroom right?
[45:39]
Always thinking that
[45:41]
part is always there.
[45:42]
Educators never turn it
[45:44]
off. So I just want to
[45:46]
thank you for that
[45:47]
energy and effort. And
[45:48]
I want to wish
[45:50]
everyone an incredible
[45:52]
first day of school
[45:53]
and I hope that it
[45:55]
goes as that. I hope
[45:56]
that each and every
[45:58]
person finds their way
[45:59]
and pathway as a
[46:00]
student and our
[46:01]
schools, so that they
[46:05]
can thrive. And for the
[46:08]
bicyclists also follow
[46:11]
the road rules. Please
[46:15]
note those, stop signs
[46:16]
but also as those who
[46:17]
drive to the school
[46:18]
know that there'll be
[46:19]
somebody's bike riders
[46:21]
out there. Are just
[46:22]
learning how to make it
[46:24]
on the road. So seeing
[46:25]
those areas where our
[46:26]
students share the
[46:27]
road with cars, please
[46:30]
be extra careful next
[46:31]
week as those kiddos
[46:34]
get back into school
[46:35]
you so much. I have
[46:37]
also time talking to
[46:39]
community members. The
[46:40]
last two weeks. And
[46:41]
everyone's excited for
[46:43]
what comes next. I
[46:44]
know the away for the
[46:46]
day, which I'm a huge
[46:48]
of going to be a
[46:49]
difficult position for
[46:50]
some. For some maybe
[46:53]
not so much. But just
[46:53]
know that. Let's try
[46:54]
something new. Let's
[46:55]
see what that looks
[46:58]
like for all of us
[47:00]
open that I know it's
[47:01]
hard for us to put our
[47:02]
phones down. It's not
[47:04]
just students, it's
[47:06]
adulthood. So thank
[47:08]
you and have an
[47:09]
incredible beginning of
[47:11]
the first year of the
[47:13]
have an incredible
[47:13]
first day of school. In
[47:16]
the beginning 2026
[47:21]
2027.
[47:22]
>> for myself, I
[47:23]
didn't get to mention
[47:24]
this in the last
[47:26]
meeting. I was coming
[47:27]
in remotely, but I
[47:28]
wanted to add my own
[47:29]
comment that I
[47:30]
appreciated the
[47:30]
governor's visit to our
[47:32]
district back in JULY
[47:36]
it's nice to also, I
[47:38]
attended the breakfast
[47:40]
on tuesday. Tuesday
[47:42]
morning for new
[47:44]
teachers and
[47:45]
greetings. We have the
[47:48]
board to. To our new
[47:49]
certificate f this
[47:51]
morning I attended a
[47:52]
professional
[47:54]
development. For
[47:55]
teachers. This morning
[47:57]
at emerson and that
[47:59]
was for junior faculty
[48:00]
and I really
[48:04]
appreciated the the
[48:04]
conversations that
[48:05]
that took place. And I
[48:06]
think that it was. I
[48:09]
saw evidence myself of
[48:12]
time for teachers to
[48:13]
communicate and
[48:14]
collaborate and talk
[48:17]
about things that of
[48:22]
teaching.. I myself
[48:23]
in my day job, I am a
[48:25]
community college
[48:27]
faculty and community
[48:27]
college district and we
[48:28]
start next week as
[48:32]
well and so I will be
[48:33]
attending the of a
[48:34]
similar thing
[48:35]
tomorrow. And so I
[48:37]
wont be necessarily
[48:39]
able to be at the
[48:41]
breakfast in the
[48:43]
morning, but I do feel
[48:44]
the, the energy and
[48:47]
relate in that way.
[48:48]
One thing I'll just
[48:49]
mention as an
[48:49]
announcement because
[48:51]
it's happening before
[48:52]
our next school board
[48:53]
meeting, is that there
[48:55]
will be elementary
[48:56]
music. Parent meetings
[48:59]
taking place on
[49:00]
SEPTEMBER 1st, and
[49:00]
since those. The
[49:02]
evening there and they
[49:04]
will be taking. Sit at
[49:05]
monaco. Elementary and
[49:09]
this is where fifth
[49:09]
and sixth grade.
[49:11]
Parents can enroll
[49:12]
their kids in the
[49:13]
music program in
[49:14]
particular on those
[49:17]
days for band and
[49:18]
strings. But there
[49:20]
choirs also an option
[49:25]
and so with that.. Do
[49:27]
we have any public
[49:32]
comment? Thought maybe
[49:36]
I would avoid the
[49:38]
usual stuff ahead of
[49:39]
time. If there's any
[49:43]
comments. We'll our
[49:46]
next item. Which is a
[49:48]
consent calendar. I
[49:48]
have any public
[49:50]
comment items before
[49:52]
me. Are there any
[49:53]
items trustees.
[49:54]
Comment on or remove
[49:55]
from the consent
[50:04]
calendar? Can I have a
[50:05]
motion to approve the
[50:06]
consent agenda as
[50:07]
presented or amended?
[50:08]
>> so moved.
[50:09]
>> second.
[50:10]
>> all right. I heard
[50:13]
a motion by nunzio and
[50:16]
seconded by vice all in
[50:16]
favor.
[50:17]
>> I
[50:20]
>> any opposed? Any
[50:23]
abstentions consent
[50:25]
agenda. Approved
[50:27]
unanimously we move on
[50:30]
to our presentation
[50:33]
action items so our
[50:34]
next item of course is
[50:37]
the summer project
[50:37]
presentation with
[50:39]
capital operations and
[50:39]
technology
[50:41]
departments. And we'll
[50:42]
begin the presentation
[50:44]
with brinton
[50:44]
>> right. Let's hand
[50:47]
it right over to thank
[50:48]
you superintendent.
[50:50]
Best and good evening.
[50:51]
Trustees. Tonight.
[50:52]
Pleased to provide a
[50:54]
brief yet robust
[50:55]
summer update
[50:56]
highlight the work of
[50:58]
capital operations and
[51:00]
technology as the
[51:00]
district presenting
[51:01]
with me tonight.

[51:37]
>> good
[51:38]
>> renovations. We did
[51:40]
this tc kinder yard at
[51:41]
north davis and a
[51:42]
complete renovation
[51:44]
this summer. Play
[51:45]
structure, three shade
[51:46]
structures, new
[51:48]
flatwork. Landscaping
[51:49]
will will provide a
[51:50]
wonderful learning
[51:51]
space for students to
[51:55]
grow and thrive. New
[51:55]
engaging space ready
[51:56]
for our tk and
[51:58]
kindergarten students.
[51:58]
On the first day of
[52:01]
school. We did a
[52:02]
project aain this
[52:04]
year projects included
[52:08]
samplings at library.
[52:10]
Room, wings de e, and
[52:12]
g at homes this is
[52:14]
part of our project
[52:15]
that has highly
[52:16]
effective in
[52:18]
addressing roof leaks.
[52:19]
And then at the high
[52:21]
school we did the
[52:23]
greenhouse to tyler
[52:25]
efforts for cte grant
[52:26]
davis senior high
[52:28]
school greenhouse
[52:31]
renovation siding with
[52:31]
filters for installed
[52:34]
at the greenhouses.
[52:35]
Space to standards
[52:36]
because learning
[52:37]
opportunities for our
[52:41]
students..
[52:41]
>> our third and final
[52:42]
phase of fencing came
[52:44]
to a close. Fencing was
[52:45]
installed at davis
[52:46]
senior high school and
[52:49]
she. School and the
[52:49]
remaining three
[52:50]
elementary birch lane
[52:52]
monaca and potwin. The
[52:53]
fencing projects were
[52:54]
designed to improve
[52:55]
security across all
[52:57]
campuses by applying a
[52:57]
common standard for
[53:00]
campus access control
[53:01]
easier campus
[53:02]
monitoring and
[53:03]
providing a clear,
[53:08]
defined perimeter. The
[53:09]
all weather track at
[53:10]
davis senior high
[53:12]
school was completed on
[53:13]
JULY 15th. Other
[53:13]
nature did not
[53:15]
cooperate in the fall,
[53:16]
when the project
[53:16]
began. However, it was
[53:18]
very helpful when the
[53:19]
project picked up back
[53:21]
in JUNE has already
[53:22]
been used by many and
[53:25]
are looking forward to
[53:26]
the 2027. Track
[53:28]
season. Last summer,
[53:29]
the track at emerson
[53:31]
was renovated and this
[53:32]
summer the triple jump
[53:35]
and shot or renovated
[53:36]
is the only
[53:37]
competition field the
[53:38]
junior highs and is
[53:39]
now complete and ready
[53:42]
to go for the season.
[53:43]
Another improvement
[53:44]
emerson is the new
[53:47]
flooring. The commons
[53:48]
replacing the original
[53:50]
floors from 1978. Will
[53:51]
create a much more
[53:52]
appealing space for
[53:53]
lunch school events
[53:57]
and our community.
[53:59]
>> and along with our
[54:00]
major renovations and
[54:01]
improvement comes the
[54:02]
work that starts the
[54:04]
new school year as and
[54:05]
s kitchen space and
[54:07]
planning meals.
[54:08]
Grounds, crew are
[54:09]
getting up outside
[54:10]
spaces custodial staff
[54:12]
and deep cleaning of
[54:13]
spaces and our
[54:14]
maintenance teams have
[54:17]
been summer long. On
[54:19]
the technology side,
[54:20]
staff and registered in
[54:21]
JULY and are currently
[54:23]
working o rostering
[54:25]
horses on the campus.
[54:26]
Certificated staff
[54:28]
laptops to be ready for
[54:28]
school. We are excited
[54:30]
to be launching a new
[54:30]
order system later in
[54:32]
the year that will
[54:33]
prove the
[54:33]
communication between
[54:35]
ml and sites and us to
[54:37]
create a robust
[54:38]
maintenance plan in
[54:40]
addition has begun to
[54:40]
upgrade ech of our
[54:42]
junior highs. Audio
[54:43]
visual equipment and
[54:44]
multi-purpose room. So
[54:46]
very much. Needed
[54:47]
funded by remaining
[54:48]
measuring bond funds,
[54:49]
we anticipate these
[54:49]
new systems will be up
[54:50]
and running by the end
[54:51]
of SEPTEMBER. First.
[54:56]
Part of NOVEMBER.
[54:57]
>> every day before
[54:58]
students walk through
[54:59]
our doors and long
[55:00]
after they've gone
[55:02]
home, there's two
[55:03]
people quietly making
[55:05]
sure schools are safe
[55:06]
and ready to welcome
[55:07]
them again. Our
[55:08]
custodial staff keeps
[55:09]
our campuses clean and
[55:10]
cared for. Often
[55:12]
working when no one
[55:12]
else is around to see
[55:14]
it. Our student
[55:14]
nutrition services
[55:16]
staff make sure every
[55:18]
child has access to a
[55:18]
meal, showing up early
[55:19]
and staying late to
[55:22]
feed our students hvac
[55:23]
technician keep our
[55:24]
classrooms cmfortable
[55:25]
so teaching and
[55:27]
learning can happen
[55:29]
happen without our it
[55:30]
supports to keep our
[55:32]
technology running
[55:33]
problems quickly so
[55:37]
that stop our grounds
[55:38]
maintenance warehouse
[55:39]
and irrigation crews
[55:40]
maintain spaces where
[55:42]
as play, gather and
[55:43]
grow along with
[55:44]
maintaining systems
[55:45]
that keep our campuses
[55:48]
running new pool pool
[55:49]
are aquatics facility
[55:51]
safe and ready
[55:51]
students can swim,
[55:53]
train and compete with
[55:55]
confidence. Our
[55:57]
plumbing, election low
[55:58]
voltage locksmith
[55:59]
specialists problems.
[56:01]
Most staff never see
[56:01]
responding quickly to
[56:03]
keep our facilities
[56:05]
safe and secure and our
[56:06]
front office
[56:07]
administrative
[56:08]
assistants ensure that
[56:09]
invoices are paid.
[56:11]
Facilities reservation
[56:13]
systems smoothly. And
[56:14]
communication to sites
[56:15]
and community is
[56:16]
timely and
[56:18]
professional of this
[56:19]
work is not
[56:20]
particularly glamorous
[56:21]
of it does go
[56:23]
unnoticed. But none of
[56:25]
it is optional. These
[56:25]
are people who take
[56:27]
pride in their work
[56:28]
and who make it
[56:28]
possible for our
[56:31]
students to learn safe
[56:33]
and inviting. We
[56:33]
commend and appreciate
[56:36]
the determination and
[56:37]
dedication of this
[56:38]
staff whose work
[56:39]
directly impacts the
[56:40]
safety and well-being
[56:42]
of our staff. But
[56:43]
especially our
[56:45]
students this
[56:46]
concludes our
[56:46]
presentation. We now
[56:48]
welcome comments and
[56:51]
questions.
[56:52]
>> all right, let's
[56:56]
begin with greenwald
[56:58]
>> you. That was a
[56:58]
wonderful
[56:59]
presentation. Thank
[57:01]
you. If you get an
[57:02]
opportunity, the
[57:03]
community member or a
[57:04]
parent, pease say
[57:07]
thank you to our staff
[57:09]
all of our staff
[57:10]
administrative staff
[57:14]
staff folks. It's
[57:15]
amazing the work they
[57:17]
do to help us keep our
[57:20]
schools safe clean and
[57:22]
a place where our can
[57:24]
learn safe. I'm glad
[57:26]
to hear about the
[57:28]
fences. Finishing up
[57:29]
and also I want to
[57:30]
about our
[57:32]
administrative staff
[57:33]
only they help wth,
[57:34]
you know, paying bills.
[57:36]
And so forth. Or
[57:39]
invoices. But. Being
[57:40]
able to observe it.
[57:40]
Different schools. It
[57:42]
was quite something to
[57:44]
observe in the area up
[57:46]
front kids come to the
[57:47]
office. Maybe have a
[57:50]
cut, a paper cut or an
[57:52]
injured, you know, or
[57:55]
arm or elbow I tell you
[57:57]
the staff is wonderful
[57:59]
at helping to make our
[58:01]
kids feel safe, feel
[58:02]
heard, and then
[58:03]
getting them over to
[58:04]
get the, you know,
[58:06]
bandaged up and it's
[58:08]
really cute how other
[58:09]
students walk their to
[58:10]
the office to make
[58:12]
sure they're okay. And
[58:13]
they get the help they
[58:13]
need. I just want to
[58:15]
say thank you to
[58:17]
everyone. Great. Thank
[58:18]
you. Scott. And if you
[58:21]
get a chance, please.
[58:22]
Give thanks for
[58:23]
helping make our
[58:24]
school safe. Thank
[58:26]
you.
[58:27]
>> thank you. Trustee
[58:29]
moon.
[58:32]
>> you really should
[58:32]
keeping us on our
[58:33]
toes. Thank you,
[58:34]
PRESIDENT Jack.
[58:35]
>> give you a chance
[58:36]
to for questions
[58:39]
before I take them up
[58:40]
..
[58:41]
>> thank you for the
[58:44]
work said earlier I'm
[58:45]
really glad to see the
[58:46]
fencing project done
[58:47]
that seems to have
[58:48]
been something we've
[58:49]
been working on for
[58:50]
almost the last four
[58:51]
years. Been here so
[58:53]
it's good to see
[58:53]
something finishing up
[58:55]
in that time. I'm
[58:56]
really excited about
[58:59]
our tracks. That
[58:59]
emerson at the high
[59:00]
school, I think that's
[59:01]
just really. We have so
[59:04]
many students and is
[59:04]
one of our sports.
[59:06]
That's no cut as far
[59:08]
as I understand. And
[59:09]
so it really does
[59:10]
bring a lot of
[59:12]
students together. So
[59:12]
thank you for that.
[59:13]
And the work there and
[59:15]
all the other stuff.
[59:17]
So that's it. I'm
[59:17]
going.
[59:20]
>> thank you. La.
[59:21]
>> well, you are
[59:21]
you're you're full of
[59:24]
vim and vinegar today.
[59:27]
PRESIDENT Jackson so I
[59:31]
will offer my my
[59:34]
colleagues and other
[59:36]
contractors for this I
[59:37]
think I have I do have
[59:38]
a couple questions,
[59:39]
but I, I want to start
[59:42]
with reminder that as
[59:42]
obvious as it seems,
[59:44]
if our students and our
[59:46]
staff don't have safe
[59:48]
places resources they
[59:49]
need to teach
[59:50]
effectively can't
[59:53]
happen. So this is
[59:53]
foundational to these
[59:56]
kind of places to have
[59:56]
staff that take care
[59:58]
of them and to always
[59:59]
to make sure.
[1:00:01]
>> that that
[1:00:03]
>> the creating is
[1:00:05]
open and inclusive for
[1:00:06]
all of our students
[1:00:08]
and all staff is easy
[1:00:09]
to forget about tat
[1:00:11]
because without it.
[1:00:12]
Nothing else can
[1:00:14]
happen also, a good
[1:00:14]
reminder that you know,
[1:00:15]
the community stepped
[1:00:18]
up with measure m and
[1:00:19]
it's truly amazing that
[1:00:21]
we approved those bond
[1:00:23]
funds. Six plus years
[1:00:24]
ago. And we've still
[1:00:26]
managed to keep them
[1:00:28]
squeezing every last
[1:00:29]
dime and dollar out of
[1:00:32]
it. And we have built
[1:00:33]
more projects on time
[1:00:34]
and on budget than we
[1:00:36]
could have reasonably
[1:00:37]
imagined. And that's
[1:00:38]
not just waving a wand
[1:00:41]
that is great.
[1:00:41]
Planning. It's great
[1:00:45]
stuff it's careful
[1:00:45]
understanding of the
[1:00:47]
right contractors and
[1:00:48]
leaders and managing
[1:00:50]
those people
[1:00:51]
effectively. And this
[1:00:52]
has been done at the
[1:00:53]
highest order over the
[1:00:54]
last six years. And I
[1:00:56]
think our community
[1:00:58]
absolutely should give
[1:00:58]
as my colleague,
[1:01:01]
trustee said, all huge
[1:01:03]
round of thanks. I will
[1:01:03]
say I'm particularly
[1:01:05]
grateful for the track
[1:01:08]
at the high school I
[1:01:09]
know the interviewer
[1:01:10]
surprised that I've
[1:01:10]
been to all campuses in
[1:01:11]
the last couple of
[1:01:13]
weeks to inspect your
[1:01:15]
work. I'm disappointed
[1:01:16]
in could climb and
[1:01:18]
check the roof at
[1:01:19]
montgomery at homes,
[1:01:21]
so I will be entering a
[1:01:22]
helicopter drone for
[1:01:24]
>> that
[1:01:24]
>> I think the
[1:01:25]
campuses are looking
[1:01:26]
great. Right? And
[1:01:26]
there's something
[1:01:27]
about starting a new
[1:01:28]
year feeling fresh and
[1:01:29]
everything's in order.
[1:01:30]
And look, I know, you
[1:01:31]
know, it's budgets are
[1:01:32]
always a challenge,
[1:01:34]
right? And it's always
[1:01:37]
with limited staff but
[1:01:39]
we've done. An amazing
[1:01:41]
job with all of those
[1:01:42]
things. And then the
[1:01:43]
last thing I want to
[1:01:45]
say is that you know,
[1:01:48]
we need to continue to
[1:01:50]
recognize that
[1:01:51]
investment in our
[1:01:53]
physical plant is an
[1:01:54]
investment in our
[1:01:55]
staff and our
[1:01:56]
students. And so you
[1:01:58]
know thoughtful and
[1:01:59]
careful about how we
[1:02:00]
spend our capital
[1:02:02]
dollars is important
[1:02:02]
but that money pays
[1:02:04]
off. And I think
[1:02:05]
sometimes it's, it's
[1:02:07]
easy to forget that
[1:02:09]
those investments they
[1:02:11]
take a lot of time to
[1:02:12]
plan and they take a
[1:02:14]
lot of engagement. For
[1:02:15]
example, my, my, my
[1:02:16]
colleague, trustee
[1:02:18]
mentioned aout a,
[1:02:20]
about fencing. Tere
[1:02:22]
were. I don't know.
[1:02:23]
60, 70 community
[1:02:25]
meetings that staff
[1:02:26]
were there to listen
[1:02:28]
and be thoughtful
[1:02:29]
there were hundreds and
[1:02:30]
hundreds of comments
[1:02:31]
made. Right. And then a
[1:02:32]
thoughtful approach
[1:02:33]
trying to create a
[1:02:34]
balance between
[1:02:35]
creating the safest
[1:02:37]
possible campus. But
[1:02:37]
also respecting the
[1:02:39]
values of our
[1:02:40]
community and our
[1:02:41]
teachers and staff
[1:02:42]
what kind of campus
[1:02:43]
they want these are
[1:02:44]
hard things to do.
[1:02:45]
Well, and we have done
[1:02:49]
well. So thank you
[1:02:52]
>> you, vice PRESIDENT
[1:02:53]
>> you, PRESIDENT
[1:02:56]
Jackson. I think I'm
[1:02:58]
been first of all,
[1:02:58]
thank you for the
[1:02:59]
presentation. I really
[1:03:00]
want to acknowledge the
[1:03:00]
hard work that has
[1:03:02]
gone on over the
[1:03:04]
summer to prepare
[1:03:05]
classrooms and our, our
[1:03:06]
outdoor spaces for
[1:03:08]
students. And I
[1:03:09]
appreciate the fact
[1:03:10]
that you show us the
[1:03:11]
many areas because
[1:03:12]
sometimes it's kind of
[1:03:13]
unseen. People don't
[1:03:14]
know all the work
[1:03:14]
that's happening behind
[1:03:16]
the scenes just
[1:03:18]
knowing that happening
[1:03:21]
and kow surfaces are
[1:03:21]
redone and roofs are
[1:03:23]
being fixed. Sometimes
[1:03:24]
it's not the glamorous
[1:03:24]
work, but it's the
[1:03:25]
important work and it's
[1:03:28]
also maintaining the
[1:03:28]
assets that we have so
[1:03:29]
that we can have them
[1:03:30]
for a long time. So I
[1:03:32]
just want to express my
[1:03:32]
gratitude for the hard
[1:03:35]
work and in case it
[1:03:36]
feels thankless work
[1:03:37]
sometimes, or maybe not
[1:03:39]
noticed know, there's
[1:03:40]
a lot of research on
[1:03:41]
students being
[1:03:42]
impacted by their
[1:03:43]
environment and where
[1:03:44]
they are and I'm
[1:03:44]
seeing, you know,
[1:03:47]
clean environment and
[1:03:49]
updated and maintained
[1:03:50]
school environment
[1:03:51]
them to learn and to
[1:03:53]
feel vlued. So I just
[1:03:54]
want to express my
[1:03:59]
gratitude for that.
[1:04:00]
>> thank you. Vice
[1:04:01]
PRESIDENT And I too,
[1:04:03]
want to express my
[1:04:04]
gratitude to all the
[1:04:05]
work that's been done
[1:04:06]
over the summer. I
[1:04:08]
also am reminded that
[1:04:10]
are lucky that our
[1:04:11]
community is willing
[1:04:14]
to support the a bond
[1:04:16]
fund as well as other
[1:04:19]
funds to the
[1:04:21]
facilities in cooking
[1:04:24]
order I've run into
[1:04:25]
stories about other
[1:04:27]
drinks where is not
[1:04:30]
the case, and the
[1:04:30]
they're rather
[1:04:32]
unfortunate stories
[1:04:33]
have a like a couple of
[1:04:35]
questions I wanted to
[1:04:37]
ask if there's someone
[1:04:39]
from the community
[1:04:40]
that is something
[1:04:41]
wrong on campus? I
[1:04:43]
mean, in kind of a
[1:04:43]
non-emergency way,
[1:04:45]
like maybe a sprinkler
[1:04:46]
head broke and its
[1:04:48]
shooting water or a
[1:04:49]
tree limb fell like
[1:04:51]
that. After hours.
[1:04:53]
What can the community
[1:04:57]
do people
[1:04:57]
>> usually tat's
[1:04:58]
through our school
[1:05:01]
sites. If they can
[1:05:02]
report that the next
[1:05:04]
day oen, but we do
[1:05:05]
have a couple of phone
[1:05:06]
numbers on our
[1:05:07]
website. That can point
[1:05:07]
them in the right
[1:05:08]
direction. As far as
[1:05:09]
the maintenance and
[1:05:10]
operation, maintenance
[1:05:11]
and operations
[1:05:12]
building itself. And I
[1:05:14]
think the phone is
[1:05:15]
available. Staff if I'm
[1:05:17]
not mistaken, because
[1:05:18]
we have 24 hour john
[1:05:18]
on that. So there are a
[1:05:20]
couple of different
[1:05:20]
resources, and we'll
[1:05:21]
make sure it's
[1:05:22]
prevalent on our
[1:05:23]
website. The other
[1:05:24]
thing. That folks can
[1:05:25]
do. Frequently,
[1:05:26]
there's it's difficult
[1:05:27]
to tell what is a city
[1:05:28]
park and what is a
[1:05:30]
district site
[1:05:31]
frequently folks will
[1:05:32]
call the city or call
[1:05:34]
us, and we will call
[1:05:34]
one another to make
[1:05:36]
sure that that work
[1:05:36]
gets done as quickly
[1:05:37]
as possible,
[1:05:38]
especially for those
[1:05:39]
things like sprinklers
[1:05:40]
and branches and those
[1:05:41]
sorts of things. Yeah.
[1:05:43]
>> and I also just
[1:05:45]
might share that. I
[1:05:46]
know that as trustees,
[1:05:47]
every now and then we
[1:05:48]
get those kinds of
[1:05:50]
comments and, and we
[1:05:51]
can pass those on. But
[1:05:52]
I thought I'd at least
[1:05:53]
that information out
[1:05:56]
there also there have
[1:05:57]
been I mean, we've had
[1:05:58]
been making you know,
[1:05:59]
at the same time, all
[1:06:00]
of this has been
[1:06:01]
happening over the
[1:06:02]
years in recent years,
[1:06:03]
we've been making cuts
[1:06:06]
to capital operations.
[1:06:09]
As a bond has been
[1:06:10]
winding down and just
[1:06:10]
wondering if you could
[1:06:12]
comment on what those
[1:06:13]
types
[1:06:15]
>> yeah, you know, we
[1:06:16]
there's two things.
[1:06:18]
Well. Let me back up.
[1:06:20]
Just a tick and if I
[1:06:22]
could just jump on the
[1:06:23]
gratitude. Train, be
[1:06:24]
the caboose on the
[1:06:25]
gratitude train before
[1:06:26]
before I answer your
[1:06:28]
question. And that is
[1:06:28]
that I'm really
[1:06:29]
thankful for all the
[1:06:30]
work that the staff
[1:06:31]
have been doing around
[1:06:33]
the it really is a
[1:06:33]
monumental task. We've
[1:06:34]
got a couple hundred
[1:06:35]
acres, hundreds of
[1:06:37]
buildings. Of which are
[1:06:38]
going to approach the
[1:06:40]
century mrk before
[1:06:42]
too long and the board
[1:06:44]
has really made two
[1:06:45]
really huge governance
[1:06:46]
shifts since m time
[1:06:47]
in the district came to
[1:06:49]
the district in 2011.
[1:06:50]
At that time, it was
[1:06:52]
not a lot of train up
[1:06:54]
here for maintenance
[1:06:55]
and operation and
[1:06:56]
operations. There was a
[1:06:57]
lot of criticism, both
[1:06:58]
from the board and the
[1:06:59]
community, about the
[1:07:00]
work that was doing the
[1:07:01]
work. That was
[1:07:04]
happening. And the main
[1:07:05]
reason for that was
[1:07:05]
just not enough folks
[1:07:08]
to do the work.. We
[1:07:08]
had six crew for the
[1:07:10]
whole district. We had
[1:07:11]
about half the number
[1:07:13]
of maintenance staff.
[1:07:15]
I'm fewer supervisors
[1:07:16]
and leaders, and the
[1:07:17]
board made a really
[1:07:18]
important shift, and
[1:07:20]
that was to stop
[1:07:22]
borrowing against our
[1:07:24]
facilities. Dollars
[1:07:26]
have more revenue to
[1:07:27]
support our deferred
[1:07:28]
maintenance. In terms
[1:07:30]
of classified staff,
[1:07:31]
but also more dollars.
[1:07:31]
Do more deferred
[1:07:34]
maintenance projects.
[1:07:34]
I remember 15 years
[1:07:35]
ago, we were we were
[1:07:36]
planning out advance
[1:07:38]
about a roof, and we
[1:07:39]
did how many roofs this
[1:07:41]
summer?? Two sites.
[1:07:43]
And we did how many a
[1:07:45]
couple as well you
[1:07:45]
know, we're doing
[1:07:46]
we're doing roofs a
[1:07:47]
couple years, we'll
[1:07:48]
start doing painting.
[1:07:49]
Every every couple of
[1:07:50]
years. And those were
[1:07:52]
decade long, between I
[1:07:53]
mean, roof jobs. So
[1:07:54]
that was a that was a
[1:07:56]
huge monumental shift.
[1:07:57]
And we've still got to
[1:07:58]
do the deferred
[1:07:59]
maintenance side. But
[1:08:00]
we are investing
[1:08:01]
dollars in preventive
[1:08:02]
maintenance. I think
[1:08:03]
we added a new hvac
[1:08:04]
technician. Now there's
[1:08:05]
two. And not just one.
[1:08:06]
Right. Which allows
[1:08:07]
like belts to be
[1:08:08]
changed and filters to
[1:08:09]
be replaced on
[1:08:10]
schedule, which
[1:08:11]
prolongs the life of
[1:08:12]
those of those of those
[1:08:13]
machines. So the other
[1:08:14]
big part, as joe
[1:08:15]
mentioned, was the was
[1:08:17]
the bond. And the
[1:08:19]
board made a really
[1:08:20]
gutsy decision. From
[1:08:21]
my perspective to sell
[1:08:22]
all the bonds. In
[1:08:26]
APRIL of 2020, nobody
[1:08:31]
was quite sure what the
[1:08:36]
heck was going to
[1:08:41]
happen. But we saved
[1:08:47]
davis taxpayers $79
[1:08:52]
million in interest
[1:08:57]
and we generated a
[1:09:02]
couple million more
[1:09:07]
dollars in revenue.
[1:09:12]
And the board said,
[1:09:18]
put the pedal to the
[1:09:23]
metal and build as
[1:09:28]
much as you can as fast
[1:09:33]
as you can. And we
[1:09:38]
constructed 215 ish
[1:09:43]
million dollars the
[1:09:48]
past five and a half
[1:09:54]
years of new
[1:09:59]
construction or and or
[1:10:04]
modernization. That is
[1:10:09]
monumental task so
[1:10:14]
there's just, you
[1:10:19]
know, to be of as a
[1:10:25]
governance team a part
[1:10:30]
of that work and
[1:10:35]
getting to your
[1:10:40]
question, PRESIDENT
[1:10:45]
Jackson, is those bond
[1:10:50]
dollars we are on the
[1:10:56]
last the last dribs and
[1:11:01]
drabs so we've reduced
[1:11:06]
all but one position
[1:11:11]
in the bond. It's
[1:11:16]
funded by bond dollars
[1:11:21]
over the past couple of
[1:11:26]
years, we've been
[1:11:32]
scaling down and that
[1:11:37]
one position will
