What day is today? Welcome to the Monday, September 14th, 2026, meeting the Senate Chairman of Regional School Committee. Please join me in the pledge of allegiance.
[0:11]
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to your Republic, for which it stands, one nation under God, any of this vote, whether it be injustice for all.
[0:23]
Thank you everyone, we will start with a report from the Director of Finance and Operations, please.
[0:32]
Thank you.
[0:33]
Hi everybody.
[0:35]
So we felt like it was important two months in to give kind of an entry update.
[0:41]
Let you know how things are going and kind of what the plan is for for this school year.
[0:50]
Okay, hi everybody, I'm Jesse Clemens, I'm the new director of Finance and Operations for the public, thank you.
[1:02]
So, very supported in my new role with an incredible team already.
[1:08]
There are five of us, there is an assistant director, we have payroll coordinator, Accounts Payable and Treasurer,
[1:15]
with varied experience, either doing the job in other cities and towns or spending a
[1:23]
lot of time working here at DUI. We've really come together as a strong team. Again,
[1:28]
weekly meetings, having a real team feel and just making sure that we can lean on each
[1:34]
other for a lot of the different kinds of learning that we've been doing over the few months.
[1:40]
And then I feel like my role is just to really lead and advocate for that team as we start to figure out like really efficient processes for finance.
[1:55]
So so far, for the first about 60 days in, we're really focusing on our grant reporting and management to continue the precision, making sure that our funds are spent, meeting deadlines reporting accurately.
[2:11]
We are really honed in and using our best accounting practices and Ivisions so that way Ivisions is our system where at any moment we can look and see here's where we are at any given time.
[2:28]
Working hard to make sure that communication from even the staff outside in the buildings and the different positions are clear on payroll and accounts payable.
[2:40]
processes and then really working hard to partner with human resources to make sure that
[2:47]
that flow from the human resource side over to the finance side for all the variety of things
[2:52]
hiring, again payroll, then paying vendors things like that is really smooth.
[3:01]
And so kind of
[3:02]
some priorities for the year, currently working on our end-of-year report for fiscal 26.
[3:11]
living in fiscal 20, something I'm learning is that you're always living in three different
[3:15]
fiscal years.
[3:16]
And this is also, again, like I'm honing in on fiscal 26, getting that end of year report,
[3:20]
complete, which is due at the end of the month, then thinking about budget season.
[3:25]
Those are meetings that you'll see on your list of, you know, the variety of budget meetings
[3:31]
that we'll have for fiscal 28 and building that budget.
[3:34]
Also shifting, my focus has been so much on the finance and kind of budget and accounting
[3:40]
side of things, also the shift to capital planning, and so we're working on setting up
[3:46]
meetings for the subcommittee for capital, along with finance subcommittee meetings, and
[3:52]
just really doing what's best for the district for long range capital planning.
[3:57]
And then I have been fortunate, I'm a part of the Mazpo program with an advisor from
[4:03]
a lot of my regional school district working toward my license.
[4:10]
And before questions, I'll just say that again, you'll see like the next few meetings are
[4:14]
going to be talking about like building the fiscal 20 budget and kind of giving everybody an
[4:20]
overview of where we're at as much information as possible over the next couple of months.
[4:28]
Questions?
[4:29]
Anyone have any questions?
[4:31]
Comments?
[4:34]
I've always quiet, okay.
[4:36]
Marilyn?
[4:36]
So,
[4:41]
this is clear to me and detailed, and I see the progression.
[4:45]
So, I'm going to ask a question about something that maybe you want to get to, or is still brewing,
[4:51]
but I remember with the outgoing treasure, there was this report about our funds when it came to scholarship,
[5:00]
and all of that, and how many different accounts we have, is that sort of like a special project that might start this year?
[5:07]
So, I'll give credit to the Assistant Director and the
[5:10]
Treasurer that they're already digging in and making sure that the
[5:14]
reporting, the accuracy of scholarship to bank account, is 100% so it's ongoing.
[5:25]
I think the biggest thing that the towns have asked since day one is transparency and
[5:34]
you know, they always want to see more. So, all I would do is as advice would just be
[5:38]
prepared to, you know, be ready for the request and to have everything available. You know,
[5:43]
I know you share it with us, but, you know, there's a lot of eyes always looking at us from
[5:47]
two different towns, and I think it's just important to make sure you're prepared to do that.
[5:53]
So, thank you.
[5:56]
Thank
[5:59]
you.
[5:59]
Thank you.
[6:00]
I do want to, Jenny would be have a heart attack if I didn't ask a question.
[6:04]
So, but a quick question, did you happen to find a couple of million dollars somewhere in it?
[6:13]
Not yet. We are working on it.
[6:22]
It's amazing to see how this department has progressed and changed over the years.
[6:28]
And I like hearing that you have a whole team of people working together and everyone has varied skill sets.
[6:35]
sounds like bring to the table. So, I would just, you know, I'm sure you are, and along
[6:43]
with Mark, but keeping an eye on the size of this team and making sure that we've got the right
[6:50]
number of people with the right skill sets as we, as you've started seeing what work really needs
[6:58]
to be done so. Thank you. All right. Moving on to the superintendents report.
[7:08]
Thank you.
[7:10]
I'll get something.
[7:13]
A little out of order. School committee liaison to the select board.
[7:18]
Joe, anything for your math?
[7:19]
Yeah, just quickly.
[7:21]
They didn't have a meeting last week because of the election.
[7:23]
But just to point out Mark probably has it in his superintendents report.
[7:28]
but...
[7:30]
While the heal feels it's going to be down at the park and they're going to come up here, and I guess kids are going to be out there, but if you haven't seen it, you haven't been involved at seeing it in Washington, D.C.
[7:43]
It's the only place in Massachusetts, it's going to be. So it's a tremendous thing. I'm having the honor of placing my cousin's panel in, he lost his life, he was an immigrant, and he got his citizenship posthumously.
[7:59]
But if you haven't seen it, it's really moving in and it's something that you should see.
[8:04]
So thank you.
[8:07]
John, then anything for Dennis?
[8:09]
Yes, and I'm so excited to report on this.
[8:13]
Thank you for this opportunity, by the way.
[8:18]
Really nothing was spoken other than the fact that they're pushing forward with the Wixen project.
[8:26]
And so they have the construction people are coming in and then they're going up to
[8:33]
I think it's blocked and consulting with somebody that's going to tell them about a
[8:38]
specialist for baitment and how they're going to take care of that.
[8:43]
And the only other thing, just from a financial standpoint, they are putting on the fall meeting
[8:49]
I'm a warrant a five million dollar expenditure for the Susuit Harbor Project that they've been talking about for the past couple of years other than that nothing that I think would pertain to us.
[9:03]
Thank you for the report and you're very welcome for this opportunity.
[9:08]
I know there weren't enough meetings in your life.
[9:12]
Okay, now let's you bring ten minutes for a point.
[9:16]
All right. Yes, under some recommendations really, as Mr. Glenn mentioned, the wall that
[9:26]
heels is coming to the town of Yarmith, we've been working at the O'Gosh, just in the
[9:33]
last name of the group. The veterans outreach, thank you. Is the main sponsor or organizer
[9:40]
that's bringing the group to town and to the region and so we've been working, they reached
[9:48]
out to the district sometime last spring to talk about how the schools can participate
[9:56]
and so we're going to have the, as Mr. Glenn mentioned, the students tomorrow that's the day
[10:04]
of the, I don't know what the right term is, the parade, the processional will arrive as
[10:10]
of wall makes its way down to Parker's partner's landing.
[10:16]
Yeah, where we'll be positioned stationed for the first duration.
[10:25]
And so part of that trip will be right down station-av.
[10:28]
So all the students that are at the station-av and DUI will come out and greet as it goes by.
[10:38]
And then we have several students from the high school,
[10:42]
a couple of the athletic teams are going to go over the following day.
[10:47]
So that's now Wednesday to help and needs to be constructed.
[10:51]
It comes in a truck, but then it needs to be constructed.
[10:54]
So a couple of the high school athletic teams volunteered to be the part of setting up.
[11:02]
And then we have several of our US history classes.
[11:06]
classes will go as then and there's also like a learning experience as part of it so then
[11:12]
another way the district will be engaged as a learning experience for the students through
[11:17]
their U.S. history classes.
[11:19]
So we're looking forward to the experience and then we'll we've been sharing information
[11:22]
with with our through our social media channels and through our newsletters for families should
[11:29]
they want to just go as well as learning experience for those of the main ways as a school
[11:33]
district that will be participating and we're looking forward to the collaboration, you know,
[11:38]
has been a lot of communication over the last months, now it's happened in tomorrow.
[11:47]
Let's see, that transitions into the opening school.
[11:50]
So we had a great start to the school year last week.
[11:55]
You know, I've said it before.
[11:57]
School district isn't anything until the kids show up.
[12:00]
You know, this lots of stuff that does happen during the summer.
[12:02]
but it's just not the same until we get 3,000 kids
[12:05]
walk through the door on the first day.
[12:07]
I'm on a Wednesday.
[12:08]
I was able to get out and visit all the schools.
[12:11]
There was just great vibes, I don't know if that's still a term.
[12:15]
But it was a term.
[12:17]
With great vibes throughout the district,
[12:20]
lots of smiles, kids greet each other,
[12:22]
who hadn't seen each other over the summer.
[12:24]
Lots of hugs, high fives, high schools,
[12:28]
transition to a bell to bell.
[12:31]
No personal device policy and the kids actually did really well.
[12:35]
I was talking a couple of the APs and the Dean, you know, other than a couple of reminders.
[12:41]
And a couple of kids are just quite frankly needed to access their phone to their schedule.
[12:45]
Most of the kids came in and we're here into that policy right away.
[12:51]
I was great to see, you know, here at this building, they've got a pretty well-oiled machine at this point.
[12:58]
The fourth graders come in here.
[13:00]
If the graders go into the gym, the sixth and seventh
[13:06]
graders go into the auditorium, sort of as a Hogwarts pre-sortering, and then they, then they, from there, get the kids into the, into their spaces and other sixth and seventh grade, they sort of set some expectations, and then this helps with the fourth graders as their first time in this big giant building, they get them into organized into homerums here, and then they go off with their teachers into the space.
[13:30]
So it's just a good way to help organize and then at the elementary schools, they were
[13:35]
already about a time.
[13:36]
I started at Station Ab, obviously I'll three of them started at the same time, I tried
[13:39]
to start at a different one each year, but by the time I got to the other two elementary
[13:43]
schools, they were already working on school, wide expectations, like, you know, what does
[13:48]
a recess look like?
[13:49]
What does it look like to be in the hallways, what was cafeteria's look like?
[13:52]
So it's just, you know, again, great to see everything up and run in and again to see
[13:59]
the positive energy in the district.
[14:04]
Buses were running pretty well today.
[14:07]
Wasn't as great.
[14:07]
We had to actually have ton of bus combinations today.
[14:09]
I don't know.
[14:10]
I'll have to check in with the bus company.
[14:11]
I don't know if it was just that a lot of sick drivers or what.
[14:17]
But so we're still working out.
[14:19]
It's always a little rough in the beginning.
[14:21]
But the first couple days actually ran smoother than today for whatever reason.
[14:24]
So at the sort of getting to that, we're still working on some of the routing.
[14:28]
challenges, but we have seen some initial positive response in just as far as timing goes.
[14:36]
And then there are pockets, places where it's rougher than in other places.
[14:42]
So, again, we'll continue to work on smoothing that out with the bus company as we move
[14:46]
forward over the next coming weeks.
[14:50]
All right, the transitions into the next item, which is our 25-year celebration or recognition.
[14:56]
So for years, D.Y. is wrecking.
[15:00]
And I was staff who reached their 25 years of service here in DUI. Last year, we refreshed that tradition, a little bit, by, is there always been a conv, at least, I don't know, I inherited, I don't know how long it's gone on, but I inherited a tradition where those folks were celebrated a convocation and received a small token of appreciation, we expanded upon that last year by having a separate event, doing that.
[15:28]
but also having a separate event, just, I don't know.
[15:35]
What's the phrase I'm looking for?
[15:37]
I'm trying to expand the appreciation a little bit more
[15:42]
with the event, but then also the token was part of our rebranding
[15:48]
as well, so we rebranded the token to be de-wise specific,
[15:52]
and then also associated a plaque with it as well,
[15:55]
to commemorate the years of service.
[15:57]
So last year, we called back everybody that still worked in the district and then now this year going forward.
[16:04]
We will focus on just the folks that are achieving that milestone this year.
[16:08]
But then invite anybody else in the district who wants to celebrate, you know,
[16:12]
So if Jenny and I were colleagues in Jenny was, you know, reaching that milestone this year and I wanted to come and celebrate Jenny's achievement.
[16:18]
Then I would come as a, you know, just to celebrate Jenny's achievement.
[16:22]
So this year, it's October 7th. This is also your invitation. If you'd like to come and celebrate.
[16:29]
I can have Sarah send you the list of folks that are being recognized this year because I know some people have worked in the district.
[16:35]
Some people have other ties to the district. So you may want to come either as a friend colleague, supporter or just as a school committee member.
[16:44]
But it's October 7th from 5 to 7. In this year, we worked with the BASER of a country club. They're going to host us over there.
[16:50]
So nice little spot.
[16:52]
Nice little great little view of the best river,
[16:54]
so I'm going to be perfect little spot.
[16:57]
And then next item is just an update
[17:00]
on the M.E. Small School Feasibility Study.
[17:05]
We're, as I mentioned, I think the last meeting
[17:07]
is out for bid this week, two items on the list
[17:13]
or in the steps.
[17:15]
We have a designer pre-bid walkthrough.
[17:17]
So that's any designer who's interested
[17:19]
in the impotentially bidding, they have an opportunity to walk the site. So that's on Wednesday
[17:27]
at 4 o'clock. So the OPM, myself, our facility's director, will be present. All any designers
[17:36]
interested that want to walk the site will be able to walk the site. Prior asking any questions,
[17:43]
et cetera, prior to submittals. Then we have the building committee meeting, their first meeting
[17:48]
for this school year is the following day on Thursday at 430, they'll get an update from the
[17:56]
agendas just about to go out to the committee, but the preview of that is they'll get an update
[18:01]
from they'll get to meet the OPMs because the OPMs will take over running the meetings at this
[18:07]
point, you know, as far as helping keeping us on gender obviously the chair is still a chair, but
[18:17]
and they will get us an update from the OPM on where the design process is, and then that
[18:23]
group will need to select just like they did for the OPM selection.
[18:28]
They'll need to the building committee will need to select a subgroup of the building
[18:35]
committee to go through the selection process for the designer.
[18:39]
So the whole building committee can't select the designer, a smaller group of the building
[18:46]
committee needs to be responsible, and so the OPM will walk through what the requirements of that
[18:52]
committee are as like who needs to be on it, MSVA has requirements on who needs to be on that,
[18:59]
and then so then the building committee will make that nominate who's going to be on that committee
[19:03]
and then we'll go forward from there and then last, we've had a difficult week or so in the news
[19:20]
media as a district. So I first I would want to start by before I make any public comments
[19:27]
on this, I just want to highlight, you know, when as a school district we went through the process
[19:33]
are creating core values. I've mentioned that when we face difficult times is when we would
[19:39]
have to lean on our values. So as we face difficult times I just wanted to highlight the value
[19:45]
of dignity and there were two parts as I went back and revisited our values. There were two things
[19:51]
two statements on our values that we determined as a district for the four dignity that said
[19:58]
that say specifically in DUI, we honor and affirm the inherent dignity of every person
[20:06]
embracing our shared responsibility to recognize, protect, and celebrate the full spectrum
[20:11]
of the human experience.
[20:13]
And then the second part says that we lead with compassion and empathy, excuse me, embedding
[20:23]
kindness into every interaction, action, and decision.
[20:27]
So with that, I think about how as a district and as a superintendent on how to phrase my comments.
[20:37]
So as I mentioned, we've received a lot of attention and a lot of folks have a lot of opinions about how the district should have handled this particular situation involved in one of our staff members who had a situation that's become very public.
[20:55]
But sort of in line with those values or with that value and with state laws, what I can share is that the district did take the situation very seriously.
[21:08]
The district conducted an investigation and that investigation took place almost immediately after the incident that our staff member was involved with.
[21:21]
We conducted an investigation, we made a determination based on that investigation and we took the appropriate action.
[21:32]
The challenge where we find ourselves is all of that happened pretty swiftly all during the summer, and then the media coverage happened.
[21:46]
So what we sort of find ourselves as a district is in a process or a place of two different timelines,
[21:53]
where the district, again, you know, are this particular staff members part of our year-round staff.
[22:00]
And so we were able to conduct our investigations, meet, take, again,
[22:07]
I'm not going to be able to talk about what action we took, but take the action all before students came to school on September 9.
[22:14]
The first day for students in the district was Wednesday, September 9th.
[22:17]
We were able to do all of this move quickly and take appropriate action all before September 9th.
[22:24]
But the story didn't break until after all that action had been taken.
[22:29]
And so anybody...
[22:30]
Who might look at what the district is doing now and thinking that district's not responding to the story, that may be accurate, but that's because the district's action happened before the news media started to respond to a story, so the news media's response is slower than the district's response to the situation.
[22:54]
And that's really about all I can say to that and that concludes my report and through the
[22:59]
chair I'll take any questions.
[23:03]
Any questions?
[23:05]
Yeah, just going back to the cell phone policy.
[23:10]
I don't know if we had updated our cell phone policy and my concern is the upcoming state law
[23:18]
what will happen, which happens a lot to us.
[23:22]
As we go through our whole policy, we set it up, we fund it, or buy equipment, or whatever we need to do,
[23:30]
and then the state policy and guidance that comes back is different.
[23:35]
So I'm wondering if there's any concerns, or if we've made invested and if there's any funding that might be forthcoming to us.
[23:44]
Yeah, so first I shouldn't use the word policy because it wasn't a policy change because you all are the only ones who can create policy, so it was a
[23:54]
procedure and guideline expectations at the high school, right? So nothing changed policy, why? So that was a miss speak on my part, so the way the high school is enacting policy changed.
[24:09]
The, and to your second point, or your second question, yes, we still don't know exactly
[24:17]
because it's in conference committee, I believe now, the House at a virgin, the Senate
[24:21]
had a, had a virgin, and if we have to adjust, we'll have to adjust, but the, what the high
[24:28]
school did didn't require any investment in equipment, they had already, the high school
[24:34]
the middle school actually
[24:38]
two or three years ago at this point had gotten through a state grant,
[24:43]
had gotten some equipment to lock boxes. They use them here at the middle school,
[24:48]
the kids put them in the morning, and then they have a very brief home room at the end of the day
[24:52]
to go back and get their equipment. The high school has the same boxes. They were using them
[25:12]
So we're still in the feasibility study period, right?
[25:18]
Or I just was afraid that I miss them.
[25:20]
So they're still all the options are open, correct?
[25:23]
Yeah, so technically we have any, well, I mean, so technically, so yes.
[25:30]
The short answer, yes, we're in the feasibility study and we're still in the process of even selecting
[25:35]
all the people who are going to help us conduct it. So the OPM is, you know, works for us.
[25:41]
They help us through the process. They help protect the district's interests. And the next
[25:46]
big person is the people who are going to conduct the majority of the feasibility study. Right?
[25:51]
So the designer is the person who's going to, you know, come in and book it, the Emmy small
[25:57]
buildings. You're going to look at the station Avenue buildings. Going to look at any of the other
[26:01]
sites. Going to give us cost estimates. Going to do any environmental studies that need to be done.
[26:05]
Like all of that stuff is going to be done by the design firm that gets selected and then put together the options and then ultimately with the committees help get down the building committee get down to the preferred options and then ultimately this committee will have to decide what goes forward but the yes, the we're so we're still very early in the feasibility study process.
[26:33]
Yes, and the MSVA has a very prescriptive process that we have to go through to get from all the options down to the preferred options down to like a limited number options then down to the preferred option that has to then go in front of the voters and etc.
[26:51]
Great.
[26:52]
Thank you.
[26:54]
And I'm not sure if this is where Joe was going, but you know what they're looking at.
[27:00]
Wednesday specifically the space that any small currently sits at correct. Yes, okay
[27:06]
But I think your kind of question was why we're looking at that space and that other spaces in my
[27:12]
Yeah, but I get I guess okay, but their currently plan is just specifically to look at the current space that it's on in that area
[27:19]
Yeah, because I mean that is the statement of interest
[27:22]
Originally submitted is for any smalls, right? So it's like same same with the OPM's came so when we first met with the OPM
[27:30]
The OPMs we've based the conversation around any small, because that's sort of where everything starts from,
[27:38]
but then when we've met with the OPMs they ask questions about, because the statement of interest includes
[27:46]
conversations about other options.
[27:48]
So then that from there that meeting were able to ask, they're able to ask questions about the other sites and what exactly
[27:57]
the feasibility study needs to include, but that's all also in the RFS, so like when PMA
[28:04]
won the bid, you know, you were part of the selection team, right? One of the things that
[28:10]
had them stand out above the others is they had already done very early sketches of, you know,
[28:19]
other potential options. They had already looked at other sites. They had, you know, looked at,
[28:24]
remember correctly, their proposal included, you know, they've done studies, like I know, like
[28:30]
Joe one of your things that you're always curious about is like life of like some of the solar
[28:34]
fields and like so they had already done some real preliminary like looks at like when was it built,
[28:41]
you know, what would the buy-out cost be, right? So, you know, those are the people that are working
[28:45]
for us, so just though that we would have some early ideas of what some potential options would be
[28:54]
And to sort of make sure that all the potential options the designer will consider when we get to get to this.
[29:03]
And that was often what the RFS for the OPM included.
[29:07]
And they transferred a lot of that to the design or RFS request for services,
[29:12]
which is what they'll all have to respond to,
[29:15]
which is what will use to rate and determine which designers the one that gets the wins the bit.
[29:22]
going
[29:30]
up the recognition of service.
[29:32]
It's been going on for at least 20 years and I know.
[29:35]
And if I could, I got a tiny little apple pin for my 25 years, can I come and trade that in for a plaque?
[29:43]
We can probably find one.
[29:46]
First of all, I just want to say, I think it's very nice that you're doing something like that a recognition and for someone like myself that would mean a lot and going back to what Sarah did.
[29:59]
Thanks for watching.
[30:00]
The retirees this past the June was beautiful as opposed to my clock that stopped working after two years.
[30:08]
I got a question for you following up on that. How many teachers in the district actually have worked 25 years in the district?
[30:24]
Yeah, I can get you the number specifically about how many we invited last year, but it was somewhere in the ballpark or 40 or 50 people we invited to the spent all 25 years in the district, is what I'm asking.
[30:35]
Yes, because it's, because it's 25 years of service in D.W.
[30:40]
Yeah.
[30:41]
And it was, you know, that was the minimum.
[30:44]
So then obviously it's people who, you know,
[30:47]
add more than that, right?
[30:48]
But yeah, it was at least 25 years of service.
[30:51]
We invited them all back of people that were still employed in D.W.
[30:56]
And had at least 25 years of service.
[31:00]
And it was, you know, not everybody was able to make it on the night that we had it.
[31:05]
It was somewhere in the ballpark of 40 to 50 people we invited to last year's.
[31:12]
A lot of institutional knowledge there.
[31:14]
Yeah, because I remember I, you know, I could dig up my speech because I think I added
[31:17]
up the total number of years.
[31:19]
But, you know, if you gave me, I can email it to you once I, that's great.
[31:23]
I don't know if I'd love to.
[31:24]
But I don't remember it off top of my head.
[31:26]
That's fine.
[31:26]
Thank you.
[31:30]
Anybody else?
[31:34]
Okay.
[31:37]
Next is the school committee, or we've got two things.
[31:40]
We've got mission statements and goals, and I just annoyed Glenn by giving him some
[31:48]
last minute changes to the mission statement, which I can go through if anybody wants to.
[31:56]
Okay, yeah, initially, I arrived here tonight with a second draft, it's in your packet
[32:06]
and the changes from the first draft are in red and this came from Maryland suggestion.
[32:14]
I plucked from her addition and kind of incorporated that.
[32:22]
trying to keep it as tight as possible.
[32:26]
I didn't want it to get too too worthy.
[32:29]
Although, it is technically two sentences.
[32:33]
There's some extreme run-ons there that English professors
[32:37]
would probably just rip me apart for, but that's all right.
[32:43]
And so Jenny, up until that point, Marilyn was the only one
[32:47]
who sent me any sort of updates or suggestions.
[32:51]
Jenny has made a couple of it.
[32:54]
Yeah, I mean, that's why it's so, by all means, please.
[32:56]
It's really just to fix the renon sentences.
[33:00]
Because the content is perfect, fantastic.
[33:02]
Thank you so much, glad.
[33:03]
This is wonderful.
[33:05]
The only changes I have is in the first line.
[33:08]
I would just take out the word further.
[33:12]
So the Dennis Charmath Regional School Committee's mission is to explore and implement initiatives
[33:16]
to maximize student achievement and to develop the academic skills,
[33:23]
critical judgment and creativity needed to achieve excellence with integrity and changing
[33:26]
wealth. No change to the next sentence except to end after school district.
[33:32]
So the D.Y.R.S.E. is committed to ensuring that students, families, and staff,
[33:36]
feel safe. Welcome, supported, respected, and appreciated within Dennis
[33:39]
Permit Regional School District, period.
[33:44]
The committee will achieve its mission through creation and revision of district policies,
[33:53]
establishing and updating district goals,
[33:59]
viscally responsible budgeting,
[34:04]
and empowering and supporting the superintendent of schools
[34:06]
to drive initiative's forward.
[34:08]
So, I just made it three sentences and took out some extra words in the last sentence.
[34:15]
Well, how do you?
[34:17]
So, those would be my suggestions.
[34:20]
Does anybody else have any other last-menace suggestions?
[34:24]
Just help me with the last-
[34:25]
I'm sorry, Joe.
[34:27]
You go ahead.
[34:28]
Marilyn and Joe, sorry.
[34:31]
The last part, or the last sentence, it starts with,
[34:35]
It ends with district, the capital D. Yes, and then it's the committee will achieve its mission. Yes.
[34:42]
Thank you. The committee will achieve its mission through creation and revision of district policies.
[34:49]
So question, comment.
[34:51]
Yeah, I don't know how we're Maryland got this, but it was exactly what I was thinking, so I don't know if it was parallel the district mission statement
[35:02]
or and I was going to suggest that we kind of do that but that was perfect that was exactly
[35:08]
what I was thinking and the like I was talking about in the goals that maybe we want to
[35:17]
put academic performance or you know it goes with our core values of excellence and
[35:23]
in student achievement, but they also, when we talk about the core values, we make, I think
[35:35]
the superintendent's, or the district mission statement has the logo with the core values
[35:41]
in it.
[35:42]
And I just think that that's because when you list something out, people think that it's
[35:47]
prioritized one thing over the other where it's in that logo and it's in the circle, we know
[35:52]
they're kind of equally distant and as important. So those are the only suggestions I have, but excellent.
[36:03]
So is there anything in particular like any wording you want added in based on that or were you just sort of...
[36:11]
I'm sorry. Academic performance or student achievements roped in there somewhere.
[36:16]
So we've got...
[36:18]
Yeah.
[36:18]
I'm sorry, I should have some maximized student achievement.
[36:22]
And I take that to mean overall student achievement.
[36:27]
Be it academic, be it arts, be it in sport.
[36:32]
It's their achievement overall.
[36:35]
Okay, everybody else is good with it.
[36:38]
I just wanted something more specific in that,
[36:41]
but everybody's good with it.
[36:42]
I'm good with it.
[36:44]
All right, anybody else?
[36:46]
we need a motion or no?
[36:47]
We will need a motion.
[36:48]
I make a motion to make a motion to approve the
[36:52]
school committee mission statement as read and presented by Ms.
[36:56]
Lange.
[36:57]
So, I guess.
[36:58]
With thanks to Mr. Martin for creating this.
[37:01]
For sure, I'm to everyone for adding to it.
[37:03]
So, any further discussion on this?
[37:06]
All in favor.
[37:07]
Bye.
[37:08]
Bye.
[37:09]
unanimous.
[37:09]
Thank you very much.
[37:12]
All right.
[37:12]
And then peace plan the school of many goals.
[37:18]
So what you have in front of you is the second draft,
[37:21]
which coincidentally is the same as the first draft.
[37:24]
I did not receive any suggestions as far as edits or updates.
[37:30]
Our additions to this, so I just move forward without, you know, without tweaking for your consideration.
[37:42]
Thanks so much, Glenn. These are fantastic. I think these really captured everything we were talking about.
[37:48]
And really nice and concise, down to, you know, for is a good number.
[37:55]
And I'd like to fact that we're building on the things we've already been doing, promoting
[38:00]
continuing to promote the image, continuing to further transparency, build on successes.
[38:07]
No, these are great.
[38:08]
Anyone have any comments?
[38:10]
Suggestions?
[38:12]
Joe?
[38:14]
Yes, so again, the logo piece.
[38:17]
And I think that we should try to look at the parallels with the superintendent goals because
[38:25]
we want to try to mimic them or be heading in the same direction.
[38:30]
The important part I think always is to be concise but also to be specific and measurable.
[38:38]
So if we have more specific goals directly and again I get back to the curriculum in
[38:50]
academic performance, but I think that they should look side-by-side with the superintendent's
[38:56]
goals so that we can be heading in the same direction.
[39:01]
But the other thing I might suggest is that Sean Costello from Mask had said he's open
[39:09]
and by the way, I haven't sent him a letter yet, but we might want to just run both of those
[39:16]
by them. I mean, we already proved the other one, but, you know, how other districts do it
[39:22]
and how we compare them, we can start off right with a good thing. But it's like Jenny
[39:30]
said, it's good. It's good. It's four is a good number, so I'm happy with everything and thank
[39:37]
you for doing it.
[39:40]
I will say that I did the top three kind of built upon what we had before kind of building
[39:49]
upon the last set of goals that we had in improving continuing on where we had our successes.
[39:56]
The fourth one, based upon our workshop with Sean,
[40:06]
involved supporting initiatives, curriculum review changes,
[40:10]
because we have, we've changed the ELA,
[40:13]
we've changed the math, math curriculum, you know,
[40:17]
for the better response will use the district budget, you know,
[40:21]
so we're not, you know, we're not over spending for anything,
[40:24]
and we're trying to get the maximum amount of what we're presenting, most bank for our
[40:29]
buck in order to drive increases in student achievement in academic support.
[40:37]
So from what I understood from the workshop, the student achievement was a high focal point
[40:44]
for us and not just that, but also being able to support our students academically in the way
[40:52]
that they need to in order to get as far as they can go themselves.
[40:58]
So that's kind of where the fourth one came to.
[41:00]
So I think, I don't know, in my mind, I kind of addressed
[41:04]
what you're talking about.
[41:07]
Well, and I think that one of my takeaways
[41:10]
from the meeting was on that day, the workshop with him
[41:13]
was that there aren't very many things that we can control
[41:18]
at that, you know, macro, you know, micro, level, so, you know, our goals have to be
[41:28]
big picture. And actually, I think they mirror quite nicely, the superintendents goals
[41:34]
of, we've got communication, instruction, organizational effectiveness and safety, which are
[41:40]
captured in our four goals. So, you know, I think that's a nice mirror considering that we have
[41:47]
very different jobs and, you know, ours have to be a little bit broader.
[41:54]
But, Tomas?
[41:56]
Madam Chair, seeing that this was the second reading and no other changes were submitted.
[42:02]
I make a motion to accept the school committee goals for the 2026-2027 year.
[42:07]
That's impressive.
[42:08]
All right, Maryland's second under the wire, sorry, John, motion has been made and
[42:14]
And we can always update these, right?
[42:17]
So this is, you know, any further discussion.
[42:22]
Okay, all in favor?
[42:24]
I, unanimous.
[42:25]
Thank you very much.
[42:27]
Thank you, Glenn.
[42:34]
Okay, consent agenda.
[42:36]
I believe just has the minutes of May 4th and May 18th.
[42:39]
Does anyone move the consent agenda?
[42:41]
To move.
[42:42]
Move by Glenn, is there a second?
[42:45]
Seconded by John?
[42:47]
New?
[42:52]
come on. Any discussion on that? Okay, all in favor? I pass unanimously. No bills. No red
[43:04]
folder to sign tonight, excellent. Calenders are in your packet with school committee
[43:10]
meeting topics.
[43:14]
Beginning the school year, there's a lot going on. I'll leave it to everyone
[43:16]
to keep an eye on the calendar.
[43:19]
But yeah, open houses around there.
[43:21]
I know D.Y. is tomorrow night.
[43:25]
I mean, small Wednesday, this building on Thursday,
[43:30]
next week, station Avon Tuesday and as a baker on Thursday.
[43:35]
So busy, busy time for everybody.
[43:38]
All right, and is anyone here for public comment?
[43:42]
OK, so we have no public comment tonight.
[43:44]
And that's what we have on the agenda.
[43:48]
Motion to adjourn. Motion's the main second in all in favor. I thank you very much
