[4:09]
From closed session. May I have a roll call please.
[4:16]
Here. Here. Here. Here.
[4:18]
Here. Here. Here.
[4:20]
Here.
[4:23]
The Board would not be reporting out of closed session.
[4:28]
Are there any changes to the agenda?
[4:31]
There are no changes.
[4:33]
Let's move to approve the agenda.
[4:36]
Second, all in favor, approve the agenda.
[4:39]
Aye. Aye. Aye.
[4:41]
We have some minutes from our July 14th board meeting.
[4:45]
Move to approve the minutes for July 14th.
[4:48]
Second.
[4:50]
All in favor of approving the July 14th minutes.
[4:56]
Communications, how about a board report?
[4:59]
Anyone want to go first?
[5:02]
I'll go first.
[5:03]
Thank you.
[5:04]
I'm just excited to get started for the upcoming school year.
[5:09]
I attended my first welcome back to school event.
[5:13]
And I really like how the administration brought everyone together with an intention to set the, you know, the intention for the upcoming school year.
[5:25]
So I really enjoyed that very much.
[5:29]
So I'm excited to get started.
[5:32]
Thank you.
[5:34]
Yep, not much for me to report out, just been a busy summer personally, but I did read
[5:42]
something really cool, and I just kind of wanted to give the student a shout out.
[5:48]
This is at Westmore.
[5:50]
We had a Ryan Chow, which is a student at Westmore.
[5:53]
He had been selected to serve as the San Mateo County Youth Commission liaison to the San Mateo
[5:59]
County Board of Education.
[6:00]
So I thought that was pretty cool.
[6:02]
Wanted to get Ryan and Westmore shout out for that, and then another than that, I'm done.
[6:08]
Not much here. I mean, I hope everybody had a great summer.
[6:11]
I'd nice to see classes back in session. Also was great to be at the
[6:16]
welcome back a couple weeks ago. Always fun to see everybody back.
[6:21]
But in particular, I really just commend the team here for the great presentations.
[6:26]
And even managing the time as well as possible, but also a lot of fun to see the various milestones for our various employees, everybody at the 5-10s, 15s, 20s, 30s and so forth.
[6:43]
So congratulations to all who have been here and thank you so much for your service to the district.
[6:51]
I also attended the welcome back, and when I was there, I told a couple of people how
[6:58]
a comradery I saw there, something was probably missing when I was a teacher. Maybe it was
[7:04]
me. But it's just nice to be keen gently involved with a situation where that type of situation
[7:13]
has a chance to happen. And well, I think that was, that's great, but I'm looking forward
[7:21]
to great year. I guess I attended the first year, first day of school at Ternova, where
[7:26]
He said drop somebody off, so.
[7:30]
That counts participation. That's all for me.
[7:38]
Okay. Well, sorry. I think it's okay. I think it's just my turn now.
[7:42]
The superintendent report. Thank you.
[7:44]
Featuring. It's Tony Preston.
[7:48]
So thank you for mentioning welcome back.
[7:50]
It was a great start to the school year.
[7:54]
One thing that we realize that my executive cabinet and I realized a few days before is
[8:00]
But this is the first time we kind of think ever.
[8:06]
Nobody can remember back far enough to a time where there were no new administrators.
[8:14]
So this year, we began the year with all administrators returning, which is really wonderful.
[8:23]
And it is the way that we are able to do such good things in our schools.
[8:27]
because there's continuity, there's a mission-driven groups
[8:32]
that are working on things, and it's just,
[8:35]
so we were really, we were very proud of that.
[8:39]
Anyway, it was a really good welcome back day
[8:42]
and for all staff and I, of course, on the first day
[8:48]
of school, visit all the schools, very briefly,
[8:52]
but I go to all the schools and really,
[8:54]
It was just a very smooth beginning to the school year.
[8:58]
So thank you to all of the school,
[9:00]
the administrators on the school site,
[9:02]
and the school staff who make their the ones
[9:07]
who are really putting in the work
[9:11]
to make the students' lives run really smoothly
[9:14]
on that first day.
[9:15]
And it's really nice to not see lines of students
[9:19]
with no classes and lines of people waiting for things.
[9:22]
kids were in their classrooms and it was really positive on all the campuses, lots of school
[9:27]
spirit.
[9:29]
So it was really great start to the year.
[9:31]
So I just want to thank everybody involved.
[9:33]
And then, you know, we've now been in school for a couple of weeks.
[9:36]
So I have been in classrooms and on campuses just in my normal Monday visits.
[9:43]
And, you know, I'm just very, very proud of our district.
[9:46]
And I really, I walked, I see students around, people recognize me because I put my face
[9:54]
on those weekly superintendent newsletters and, you know, I was at Westmore, I think the
[9:59]
other day, I was at Westmore the other day, chatting with some students and Mr. Zow at their
[10:05]
brunch break.
[10:06]
And the kids we were chatting about things and they said, are you going to be, we've really
[10:10]
enjoyed talking to you?
[10:10]
Are you going to be here at lunch?
[10:12]
I was like, no, but thanks, I'll come back.
[10:15]
But our students are lovely, and I just am so happy to be here.
[10:20]
So, great start to the year.
[10:22]
Thanks to everyone, and we'll come forward to the rest of a good year.
[10:25]
That's it for me.
[10:31]
I don't think we have any board subcommittees to report out the way.
[10:37]
How about an EFT local 1481 report?
[10:41]
I see Mr. Cooby is here.
[10:47]
Good evening, everybody.
[10:49]
I guess do I do report every time?
[10:50]
Okay, because me and Michaela were arguing today whether or not we had to give a report to you.
[10:55]
So you've been the second one.
[10:57]
The report is that during the welcome back we had a good time really me and Michaela having
[11:04]
the ability to talk to membership for the first time as co-presidents.
[11:08]
We really did try to educate folks, especially the new teachers who are new members to
[11:15]
of the 2014 anyone were about and was really about that a lot of the things we talked about
[11:19]
the last time in the county as a district and AFT-141 and the community working together to support
[11:25]
new teachers and support them joining the daily city pacific school in high school district.
[11:30]
And then the welcome back event we got 30 minutes to present to our membership and we really
[11:37]
wanted to double down on that. We talked about our values as an AFT-41 membership,
[11:42]
but also what the union is about and how we are trying to represent not only our membership,
[11:50]
but the school district, the community and the students at large in the family. So that was part
[11:55]
of our our message to our members, but also getting feedback. We had an interactive presentation
[12:00]
where they were able to participate during our feedback and kind of give their own voice during
[12:07]
presentation. And then today we had our first exact console meeting. It was nice to see some
[12:13]
some folks step up to be an exact board for the school sites and should kind of speak about
[12:19]
what's going on at the school sites over the first couple weeks of school. And then it was just nice
[12:27]
to have the first two weeks go very well for our teachers and our staff, you know, it's starting
[12:32]
the school year up and many of them felt like the same thing things went smoothly, students were
[12:36]
good and they were able to get started with their school year and a positive way. So
[12:44]
good, good messages all around from from all school sites today at our
[12:49]
our exact board meeting and overall just meeting with with members. Thank you.
[12:55]
Thank you. Thanks Adam.
[13:00]
I don't 14 is public comment. Do we have any public comment, Mr. Clerk?
[13:04]
We refer to item 13 consent agenda.
[13:08]
We have to approve that.
[13:10]
Yes, we do.
[13:12]
Move approved consent.
[13:14]
Of you. Second.
[13:16]
All in favor of proving the consent agenda agenda.
[13:19]
Hi.
[13:20]
And then to your other point on item 14,
[13:23]
we do not have any public comment this evening.
[13:32]
15A1 is student services discussion item is best we know.
[13:42]
There I am. Good evening. This is policy 51-41-75 weather safety. This is our first
[13:54]
to extreme weather events that may pose risks to the health and safety of students participating
[14:01]
in physical activity during extreme weather conditions.
[14:09]
Thank you first read, so we get to
[14:12]
consider this in a prove it later. Thank you. Any question? No. No. Moving right along.
[14:20]
Item 15B is under the heading of human resources. I've seen a number of board policy
[14:27]
discussion items, will we like to take them in one fell swoop, Ms. Luan?
[14:33]
I can do that if you're okay with that.
[14:36]
I'm okay with that.
[14:38]
So before you are for board policies here before you for a first grade, the first policy
[14:44]
pertains to an update to volunteers.
[14:47]
The ed code change to make volunteers mandated reporters.
[14:52]
This is the first time in California history that has happened.
[14:55]
so this policy is just reflecting that change in the law.
[15:00]
And then the next three policies all pertain to bargaining unit clarifying that the union is the exclusive representative of employees. And so we bargain with them. And then also just clarifying things like if, if in the event, there is a strike employee employees who are on strike are still entitled to their medical benefits. And I welcome any questions.
[15:26]
I have no wonder. I do have one good one drink with regards to the volunteers as
[15:32]
mandated reporters. Does that mean that they have to undergo some training
[15:35]
prior? Yes. So now all mandated all volunteers that we onboard are assigned a
[15:41]
mandated reporter training. Okay.
[15:47]
There was that mean that past volunteers who
[15:50]
return now get a fantastic training. Look forward to that training.
[16:02]
Okay, any other
[16:02]
question, item 16,
[16:11]
1681, 1681, 1681 is a call for nomination. It looks like Ms. Presto will
[16:19]
tell us about it. Yeah, thank you. So CSBA's issue to call for nominations for its director
[16:24]
at large position. They are seeking nominations for the Hispanic and Asian Pacific Islander
[16:31]
director at large positions. And these directors play an important role in shaping
[16:36]
CSBA policy and organizational direction. I have received a recommendation to nominate
[16:43]
Trustee Rosie Tahada for a CSBA director at large position. I posed this idea to her and
[16:49]
she said she would be happy to accept this nomination if the board would like to nominate
[16:56]
her and vote on this tonight. So I am putting this forward.
[17:02]
And I think for clarification, it's director at large Asian-American Asian Pacific Islander for her position specifically.
[17:08]
My apologies, thank you for the clarification.
[17:10]
I was trying to synopsise.
[17:13]
On the spot.
[17:15]
Yep.
[17:16]
So thanks, Andy.
[17:17]
The home.
[17:19]
I nominate Rosie.
[17:21]
As CSB director of large Asian Pacific Islander.
[17:24]
I second that.
[17:26]
All those in favor.
[17:28]
Hi.
[17:31]
I'm happy to have that opportunity.
[17:34]
Yeah.
[17:34]
Thank you.
[17:35]
Thank you so much.
[17:39]
17.
[17:40]
I haven't heard any feature agenda items.
[17:44]
And so item 18.
[17:46]
Move to a turn.
[17:47]
Second.
[17:48]
All favorite of adjournment.
[17:50]
I.
[17:51]
We are adjourned.
[17:53]
It's 7.
[17:55]
16.
[17:57]
Wow.
[17:58]
I think that is a.
