[5:27] of the leading causes of death in the United States, and whereas Michigan reported 1,443 deaths

[5:34] by suicide in 2024, with 153 of these individuals residing in Oakland County.

[5:40] And whereas organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the 988 Suicide

[5:47] and Crisis Lifeline work to help individuals in crisis and provide resources to shed light

[5:52] on this highly stigmatized topic.

[5:53] And whereas each of us carries unseed in burdens, and our community is strengthened when we choose compassion, kindness and understanding.

[6:01] And whereas the North Oakland Community Coalition is committed to serving as a trusted community partner by cultivating meaningful relationships that strengthen, support, and connect our community.

[6:11] Therefore, I, Chris Barnett, and Julie Larable, along with the North Oakland Community Coalition hereby recognize September 26th as National Suicide Prevention Month.

[6:21] and call upon our citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, faith-based organizations, and schools to commit to increasing awareness and understanding of suicide prevention and the need for appropriate and accessible services to assist individuals in crisis.

[6:41] And we have one more today, and that is the proclamation of 988 day.

[6:46] And this one says, whereas the Charter Township of Orion in collaboration with the North

[6:51] Oakland Community Coalition, National Prevention Suicide Week, and National Suicide Prevention

[6:59] And whereas Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, marks 988 day, an annual day of action dedicated

[7:17] with discussion with friends and loved ones about mental health.

[11:28] I'm here tonight as the Director of NLCC, and I'm here on behalf of our Wellness Coordinator

[11:34] at NLCC, Kim Irwinowski, who was planning to be here tonight to talk about the proclamations

[11:38] you shared and wasn't able to attend, so I am speaking on her behalf.

[11:43] Colleen, I'm stopping by to just share four thoughts on the proclamations that were shared

[11:48] with you this evening. One is to talk about how fortunate we are for the police and fire services

[11:57] we have here in the township. Everything we read about in the proclamation a moment ago

[12:03] is something that we are very fortunate to have crisis response services that are still well-trained

[12:10] here in Orient Township. Not every community can say that and we have men and women in uniform

[12:16] who are excellent in identifying crisis and knowing how to change strategy in order to help people the way they need when they arrive on scene.

[12:25] So, thank you for that.

[12:28] I also wanted to mention today's 988 day, NOCC does work on 988 awareness throughout the year.

[12:35] We work on it very closely in the school.

[12:38] So, every year we actually collect data on how many students are getting the message about 988 and what the service does.

[12:45] does how they can access it, so we work with students on learning about 98 and then we

[12:51] also share information with the public, the residents and our community about how to

[12:56] access that service as well.

[12:58] QPR trainings, so,

[13:02] you know, this month we're talking a lot about suicide prevention, but

[13:06] we know that this isn't just a one month of the year conversation.

[13:09] It's something we need to focus on all year long.

[13:11] So, we offer QPR trainings, which are the three-step process question,

[13:17] person, and refer, it's a 90-minute training that takes people, individuals,

[13:23] through the process of identifying crisis and knowing how to respond and help

[13:27] someone seek help or connect them to care. We offer this training free of charge

[13:33] to community residents, home-owned organizations, churches, organizations,

[13:37] school groups, township staff, if you were ever interested, it's available anytime you

[13:45] want it.

[13:45] Both Kim and I are trained facilitators of this training and we are happy to offer it.

[13:52] Kind of, you know, we like to say especially when we're talking about Narcan to our first

[13:57] responders, our phenomenal, but in reality, all the everyday people in our community were

[14:03] first responders because we're the first ones to spot differences in the people.

[14:06] we know, and so we are the first two can stuff up and offer support.

[14:14] And then something we're really, really excited about.

[14:17] We, about two years ago, were running a community survey,

[14:21] and we identified when we asked residents,

[14:23] what is one of the things that keeps you, might keep you from seeking care

[14:27] for them in a health crisis for yourself or someone in your family?

[14:31] And we learned that not really knowing who to call

[14:34] and being a little intimidated about the time it takes to connect to a provider is a barrier

[14:38] to seeking care. So this is a long process. We've been working on this project for quite

[14:43] a while but it's up and running and it's live. We partnered with ONTV and we are actually,

[14:48] we created an online video directory of health care providers, mental health care providers

[14:53] right here in Oregon and Oxford. We meet with them, we shoot video and we just kind of do a little

[14:59] and see you in the next one.

[15:00] All three videos with the provider, and then ONTV has edited them for us and housed them their VOD, and then we have them on our website. So if there's a family seeking care and really doesn't know where to start, and they're intimidated about the idea that it might take three or four different visits to different providers until they find that right match, they're actually able to go and watch little videos and help ease that intimidation and find the right provider the first time. So we're really excited about that, and we're just trying to get the word out.

[15:29] the people know that it's available for them to use, and we're going to continue.

[15:33] We're going to every week it seems we have another provider who wants to be recorded,

[15:37] so we'll continue to add videos to that resource.

[17:47] The reason for these bylaws changes is that since they've had to change with the newly approved transit authority.

[18:09] the Notre Board is still in charge of the Notre operation.

[30:57] One to start with is that the Dragon Trails Triathlon is coming.

[31:01] So Sunday, September 13th, they will start the swim at Camp Aguam at 9 a.m. followed by the bike and the run.

[31:08] They are looking for volunteers, so if you're thinking to yourself, I am not going to swim, bike and run.

[31:13] That's okay. They need people at the finish line on the course.

[31:18] So if you are interested in looking for that opportunity, you can reach out to either myself or to Parks and Rec.

[31:23] And they will be able to get you in the right direction, so we want to say thank you to all of them for working on that.

[31:27] And then the other thing we want to talk about tonight is with the storm that happened

[31:31] last week, we just wanted to make sure that everyone knew about what you can do with

[31:36] your yard waste.

[31:37] I know there was a post about it today, but we wanted to make sure that people knew what

[31:40] was happening.

[31:41] So with your yard waste, you can put it out there right now in either a container or a craft

[31:47] paper-access bag.

[31:49] It needs to be labeled, and so I grabbed one of the stickers, so if you do not have one

[31:54] of these stickers for your container or for your bags.

[31:57] You can get these from the office here at Township Hall

[32:00] and you can also get them from the org.

[32:02] They're nice, they're the nice ones

[32:03] so that they're reusable.

[32:04] You can put them on your container

[32:05] and then every time for yard waste they'll know

[32:07] what container goes with what.

[32:09] The bags and containers must weigh less than 50 pounds

[32:12] and right now because it is yard waste season,

[32:15] it is no weekly limit.

[32:17] So if you have some branches that fell out there,

[32:19] you've got extra leaves,

[32:21] you've got any of that kind of stuff or your neighbor dies.

[32:23] We saw with the winds that it kind of missed one house, went to the next house, so if you can help with your neighbor

[32:28] That is out there right now and if you've got more information or more questions about yard waste

[32:32] You can go to our website and find more about that the other thing to you if you have larger branches or you need more things to get rid of

[32:39] We do offer the clean sweep program and that's a one-time reimbursement of up to $25 a year

[32:45] Towards the cost of disposing of trash or debris at the Eagle Valley landfill or at environmental wood solutions

[32:51] So if you were one of those people that lost power and you needed to clean things out you've got a bunch of stuff right now just a reminder there are other ways to help us get rid of those items now that it is yard waste and trash season.
