[0:00] good evening everyone so I have some handouts in the back that speak about
[0:06] coronavirus fact sheet a keeping your home safe and also one for you who's
[0:15] that higher risk and that's the elderly right senior citizens with especially
[0:20] people with underlying chronic diseases lung disease diabetes heart disease
[0:26] immuno compress compromised people okay those people are getting hit hard and
[0:33] you've heard today the man was testifying in Congress it's it's not the
[0:38] flu it's the flu on steroids so the flu it
[0:42] may kill the corona virus may kill ten times the number of people as the flu
[0:48] virus does okay so last week governor Murphy you've all been listening to the
[0:53] TV and radio declared new jersey a declaration of emergency New York has
[0:59] the same thing today the World Health Organization declared the corona virus a
[1:04] pandemic what does that mean that means there sustained
[1:08] person-to-person transmission in many countries around the world all right the
[1:15] thing with the corona virus it's a novel virus you'll hear that word novel that's
[1:19] a means it's a new new virus right so all people are susceptible nobody has
[1:25] immune antibodies built up so everyone is susceptible there is no vaccine there
[1:32] is no particular treatment medical treatment there may be experimental
[1:37] things but no defined medical treatment it's all supportive mostly at this point
[1:44] well much remains to be unknown about the corona corona virus its impact in
[1:52] epidemiology the health experts tell us that we should proceed on the assumption
[1:57] okay that the virus will spread more broadly around the world in New Jersey
[2:03] the United States and in the community of Long Branch so what does that mean it
[2:08] means the one of the things there's most people
[2:11] fortunately for many people young people we're always concerned about
[2:15] young people they may not they get sick but they recover all right the ones at
[2:21] high risk we're like I mentioned are the people who are older adults people have
[2:25] serious chronic health conditions right we think that it's spread as the flu
[2:32] person-to-person primarily which means between two people are in close contact
[2:37] with each other somebody coughs has it the droplet is spread you either breathe
[2:43] it in or you touch a surface where the droplets on and then you touch your
[2:47] mouth eyes nose this kind of thing that's how it's transmitted it may be
[2:52] and may well be transmitted by surface you see people disinfecting surfaces all
[2:58] the time how long the virus would live on a surface is no one quite knows all
[3:04] right but you see people as a precaution disinfecting surfaces all the time
[3:11] let's see okay the other thing about the corona corona virus is that it has
[3:17] spikes on the outside if you ever seen the the pictures of the virus and it
[3:22] appears that those spikes enable it to attach more easily to cells in your body
[3:28] once you get exposed to it symptoms to look out for after 2 to 14
[3:34] days of exposure if you were exposed to someone who had the disease or so or
[3:38] maybe picked it up and then the virus and then touched your eyes and your nose
[3:44] their mouth this kind of thing you want it's gonna be a fever persistent cough
[3:50] and a shortness of breath it very much mirrors the cold and the flu so it's
[3:55] very hard to discern what you may have but if you have any of those conditions
[4:02] we ask that you stay home self isolate yourself all right
[4:06] call your health care provider you will get talk to them as there is no
[4:12] treatment there's not a lot of testing the testing right now is that done at
[4:16] the hospitals but the gatekeeper is the state so it's not that easy unless you
[4:21] have a specific where they can rule out all other things and then coronavirus
[4:26] may be the one thing that they're suspect that's going
[4:29] to be one where they're going to test so the testing is unfortunately it's a
[4:33] little limited right now so you want to call your doctor and you want to get
[4:37] advice because you want to monitor yourself because it can go south very
[4:42] quickly if you and you'll know you're not going to be feel well at all that's
[4:46] when you want to present to the ER room okay but call ahead to the ER room we
[4:51] know from past experience that that there's going to be 10 worried well for
[4:56] each sick person so if everybody runs to the ER you're going to overwhelm the
[5:02] system so you're gonna stay home most people will recover staying home and it
[5:07] won't be you know it's not going to be a vacation but it's gonna be your going to
[5:11] recover but if you're in that high-risk group
[5:14] you need to really pay attention to this so there's an 800 number if you want
[5:21] 24/7 the poison control hotline that's in the handout remember what can you do
[5:27] your mother told you your grandmother told you wash your hands frequently wash
[5:31] your hands I'm meaning wash your hands the hand sanitizer I know it's hard to
[5:36] get but if you can get hand sanitizer use that if you anything over 60%
[5:43] alcohol in it would be is sufficient okay clean and disinfect surfaces bleach
[5:51] is an all-purpose cleaner disinfect there's clean means you wash with soap
[5:55] and water disinfect means you're using some kind of agent bleach would be a
[6:00] common thing ten to one dilution and water and practice social
[6:05] distancing in other words don't go in large crowds you can see where many
[6:10] events are being canceled where they have a thousand people four thousand
[6:15] people that may become more common even smaller gatherings but if you can stay
[6:21] if you have six grandchildren don't bring them over to Nana please don't
[6:26] bring her over them over there don't expose them tell them they should you
[6:30] know be careful about limiting how much they go out and so forth so that's where
[6:35] we are right now kind of all we could tell you it is a novel
[6:40] we're learning as we go along everything is very dynamic and changing
[6:45] every day but if you see Italy is a modern country right it's completely
[6:52] shut down the whole country now we're not there yet in the US or New Jersey I
[6:57] mean we only have 23 positives and one person who has died but it could go
[7:03] there so you will be seen more you've seen in New York containment areas
[7:09] limiting of large events don't be shocked I want you to be prepared if you
[7:15] start seeing those kind I mean we have a emergency order in place and you may see
[7:19] those kind of things people events being canceled that's happening already so
[7:25] forth so if you can it's not too late stock up on supplies because of you we
[7:31] are doing investigations it's not just containment any more travel restrictions
[7:37] it's now mitigation which means if we can identify an infected person we
[7:43] interview that person we find out their contacts close contacts in the last day
[7:47] or two then we issue a quarantine order to those people to stay home for 14 days
[7:54] and it's voluntary quarantine with self monitoring of your temperature and so
[7:59] forth but if some people violate the quarantine it's going to be a mandatory
[8:04] court order to stay home quarantine we haven't done that in the United States
[8:11] and a long time so maybe since the flu pandemic in 1918 or smallpox but I you
[8:20] need to be prepared that's may where this may be going we
[8:25] what can I say we hope for the best but we have to plan for the worst all right
[8:30] so thank you Mary thank you thank you
[8:41] you
