[0:00]
good evening everyone I'd like to report
[0:02]
to you that this afternoon we had a
[0:05]
workshop on facilities following that we
[0:08]
went into closed session and we had a
[0:10]
conference with our district labor
[0:12]
negotiator mr. Pulver and then we had a
[0:15]
public employee this one didn't
[0:19]
discipline dismissal release a
[0:21]
consultation and then matters pertaining
[0:24]
to pupils there was no action taken at
[0:26]
that time so now I'm we're going to go
[0:30]
into our Pledge of Allegiance and I'd
[0:32]
like Marylyn Barnett to come forward and
[0:34]
lead us in the pledge to the Republic
[0:51]
for which it stands one nation under God
[0:54]
indivisible with liberty and justice for
[0:57]
all and I heard the room a call of
[1:04]
students that we're gonna sing for us
[1:06]
the patriotic saw the step good evening
[1:23]
everyone I'm happy to see you all I'm
[1:26]
happy to introduce Camille missile who
[1:30]
is making a repeat performance here at
[1:32]
the board meeting because she was so
[1:33]
outstanding last year she will be
[1:36]
singing for us this evening
[3:40]
thank you so much that was wonderful I i
[3:45]
now have mrs. Scott early to introduce
[3:48]
some guests thank you mrs. Russell it's
[3:51]
my pleasure to introduce some of my
[3:54]
cohorts and education for North Orange
[3:57]
County Regional occupation program which
[3:59]
is a career technical education it's
[4:01]
consortium of five school districts in
[4:03]
which we're part of it I'd like to
[4:05]
introduce Dana Lynch who's the assistant
[4:07]
superintendent of ROP and Cathy Kent who
[4:10]
is the administrator in charge of the
[4:12]
ROP programs on the La Salle High School
[4:14]
campus thank you and welcome to our
[4:20]
meeting and welcome to all of you who
[4:22]
are attending this evening you're our
[4:24]
special guests as well so thank you for
[4:25]
coming to the meeting first we have our
[4:30]
student board report and make them women
[4:33]
lizard
[4:45]
thank you and good evening madam
[4:48]
president members of the board
[4:49]
superintendent crop cabinet members
[4:52]
friends family and community I am Megan
[4:56]
women and I will be presenting tonight's
[4:58]
student board report so tonight I just
[5:01]
wanted to catch you all up on low cell
[5:04]
sports fall season went off with such a
[5:08]
hit and every sport did was so
[5:10]
successful for example girls tennis they
[5:13]
had an amazing sunset league run they
[5:15]
were sentient League champions although
[5:17]
they didn't go very far in CIF they had
[5:20]
an amazing time during league and I know
[5:22]
many girls on the tennis team and it was
[5:24]
such an awesome way for them to end
[5:26]
their senior year off with a win in the
[5:29]
sunset league also our freshman football
[5:31]
team won sunset league chip worse and
[5:34]
sunset league champions it's really cool
[5:37]
to see how excited the freshmen get up
[5:39]
the football team they know that their
[5:40]
future is going to be on the varsity
[5:42]
team and just to have that win as even
[5:45]
in the freshman as sunset league
[5:49]
champions is kind of like a boost of
[5:51]
competence and I'm really excited to see
[5:53]
what that class does as they move on to
[5:55]
JV and varsity teams also once again as
[5:59]
usual cross country did amazing we are
[6:02]
such high level of cross country and
[6:04]
actually the girls are moving on to the
[6:07]
CIF finals this weekend so that's going
[6:10]
to be really amazing to see how well
[6:11]
they run as usual of the boys did really
[6:14]
well too didn't go as far in CIF but
[6:17]
still as usual performed really great
[6:20]
also we're really excited varsity
[6:22]
football for the first time in a while
[6:23]
we are in the second round of CIF this
[6:26]
friday at home at vets at seven we're
[6:29]
wearing blue so make sure you come out
[6:31]
and support our boys they are so excited
[6:34]
for this and I know the seniors really
[6:36]
want to keep their season going and they
[6:38]
want to make our whole community proud
[6:40]
so I'm really excited to see what those
[6:41]
boys do this Friday so next movie on to
[6:45]
around the district we're really happy
[6:48]
because Hopkinson celebrated being
[6:51]
recognized as national Blue Ribbon
[6:52]
School
[6:53]
with the flag ceremony you can see
[6:55]
obviously members of the board were
[6:57]
there to present them with numerous
[6:58]
plaques and awards and it was so cool to
[7:01]
do that all of the students were out
[7:03]
there and able to support their school
[7:06]
and really see how amazing their place
[7:08]
is at lasalle and I think this just is
[7:11]
such an example of how great low cell is
[7:14]
in that one of our schools its national
[7:16]
blue ribbon is amazing but the fact that
[7:18]
many of our schools have been it in the
[7:20]
past it's even more amazing so it's
[7:23]
great to see that they celebrated such
[7:26]
an amazing accomplishment so also at Lae
[7:30]
their ambassadors almost like student
[7:32]
leaders collected candy for troop so
[7:37]
they collected Halloween candy leftover
[7:40]
Halloween candy from the school the kids
[7:42]
at school and then are going to go send
[7:44]
those to troops overseas so I think it's
[7:46]
great starting at a young age even at
[7:48]
elementary school making sure that these
[7:50]
kids know that it's important to give to
[7:52]
those who are serving our country is
[7:53]
really cool and not they're so excited
[7:56]
in these pictures and look like they're
[7:58]
having such a great time I think it's a
[8:00]
really cool thing and I know we had a
[8:01]
similar program at the high school so
[8:03]
the fact that is spread throughout the
[8:05]
whole district is something really cool
[8:07]
last lastly I would like to talk about
[8:10]
at lasalle were definitely known for
[8:13]
doing our own viral jumpy on that viral
[8:17]
train so this is another thing the
[8:19]
mannequin challenge has been going on
[8:20]
worldwide and it's something that seems
[8:24]
pretty silly but actually a lot harder
[8:25]
than it looks so one day at lunch for a
[8:28]
cool lunchtime activity we played a song
[8:31]
in the background and then everyone
[8:32]
stood for the whole version of the song
[8:35]
so it was a really hot day outside so
[8:39]
everyone's like started sweating and we
[8:41]
try to stay still for as long as we
[8:43]
could you can see like a bunch of like
[8:46]
the baseball go boys pretended to like
[8:48]
be playing baseball and other people
[8:50]
we're just doing everyday things but the
[8:52]
fact that we could stay still for that
[8:54]
long as high school students out lunch
[8:56]
was pretty amazing
[8:57]
um and it's just another thing that low
[8:59]
sound does to stay in the know and to
[9:03]
just be incorporated in like our
[9:06]
atmosphere and social media so that's
[9:08]
really awesome and that's all I have
[9:09]
tonight but thank you Megan can I ask
[9:15]
may I ask you a quick question I just
[9:18]
want to know how you feel reporting on
[9:23]
not only are the high school but also
[9:26]
the other schools and also going out to
[9:29]
the community and stuff um I personally
[9:32]
love it I've grown up in Los Alamitos
[9:34]
seal beach Rossmore my whole entire life
[9:36]
so I think it's my duty as a high school
[9:38]
student to be aware of what's going on
[9:40]
not only at my school but the whole
[9:42]
district and this is my lemon I the
[9:44]
elementary schools and middle schools
[9:45]
it's where I come from it's Who I am
[9:47]
because of them it's Who I am today and
[9:50]
I think it's really important for
[9:52]
everyone in the community to know that
[9:54]
it's not just about Los Alamitos high
[9:56]
school but it's about the surrounding
[9:58]
communities and it's about the
[9:59]
elementary schools who are shaping us to
[10:01]
go to middle school who are shaping us
[10:03]
to be lifelong Griffin so I really enjoy
[10:07]
branching out and going to the different
[10:10]
schools and the community thank you very
[10:12]
much very well said well next is my
[10:23]
report and you probably wonder why we
[10:26]
have such great choirs and performances
[10:30]
at the high school what's because they
[10:33]
get them ready at the elementary school
[10:34]
in the middle school level and so one of
[10:37]
the great opportunities I was afforded
[10:40]
to the community where's performances
[10:42]
actually by both of our middle schools
[10:45]
at two separate weekends and I think
[10:47]
mrs. Cooley went to the McAuliffe one
[10:48]
and i went to the Maga one and here you
[10:51]
see the McAuliffe middle school choir
[10:53]
that had over 200 participants and a
[10:56]
performance called vulvar the return and
[10:59]
they were also learning about in
[11:01]
classrooms about Day of the Dead and how
[11:04]
different cultures celebrate that
[11:06]
particular aspect and I also
[11:10]
saw that you know they charge to get
[11:12]
into the performances and that part of
[11:15]
the proceeds went to the make-a-wish
[11:16]
Foundation which is a really big part of
[11:19]
that schools reach out outreach to the
[11:22]
community then I went to the Maga middle
[11:25]
school performance it was all like I
[11:27]
should go they had a Broadway
[11:31]
performance at mcgough school for oak
[11:34]
middle school I should have said is not
[11:36]
and I'm they also had some other things
[11:41]
at the school itself which was the drama
[11:44]
presentation called the election that
[11:46]
was probably interesting and then we had
[11:49]
a jazz fan as well that performed at
[11:52]
wings wheels and rotors easy for me to
[11:55]
say yeah and and also at taste Veloz for
[11:59]
low cell and I so as I said you wonder
[12:04]
why all of the performances at the high
[12:06]
school are so good because they're
[12:08]
really good at the elementary and middle
[12:11]
schools as well then we also had a very
[12:14]
special day at the high school which is
[12:17]
called signing day and there were
[12:20]
fourteen percent 14 persistent
[12:23]
participants and I think one of them was
[12:27]
a boy all the rest were girls I thought
[12:30]
that was very significant and I 11 of
[12:34]
them the girls signed to play softball I
[12:37]
believe one was a water polo and I'm
[12:41]
they were absolutely outstanding schools
[12:44]
as you can see up there University of
[12:45]
Maryland Ohio University Iowa State
[12:48]
University of Oregon Michigan State
[12:51]
Regis UC San Diego University of
[12:55]
Oklahoma Boston College cal state
[12:58]
dominguez so we have these students not
[13:02]
only are great athletes they're also
[13:04]
student Scholars they have to meet all
[13:06]
the requirements to get into those
[13:09]
universities in order to get these
[13:12]
scholarships so congratulations to them
[13:14]
and we wish them the best they're in
[13:18]
this moment
[13:19]
and next we have dr. crop thank you
[13:23]
madam president is team members of the
[13:25]
board and all of our guests tonight I'm
[13:28]
going to report a little bit i'm going
[13:30]
to start with veterans days so I have
[13:31]
some pictures that are going to come up
[13:33]
there but our schools do such a
[13:35]
phenomenal job really recognizing
[13:38]
honoring and celebrating our veterans so
[13:41]
I just selected a few pictures they
[13:44]
weren't the best there all of them were
[13:45]
spectacular but this is one and it just
[13:49]
gives you a flavor of what it was like
[13:50]
to call our veterans forward and to
[13:52]
honor them schools had where veterans
[13:55]
were invited other schools had veterans
[13:57]
come with a student member so they often
[14:00]
or some of the time were fathers and
[14:02]
grandfathers and mothers and and what
[14:05]
have you not and there also were oh I
[14:08]
saw a school that had the high school
[14:10]
band playing and another it was an
[14:12]
elementary school in an elementary
[14:14]
school that had cheerleaders there so it
[14:17]
really the variety was was unbelievable
[14:20]
but I also saw veterans with tears in
[14:23]
their eyes and you know and I think for
[14:25]
so many oops I'm getting all weepy now
[14:27]
but for some of our veterans you know
[14:31]
some of certain ages did not come home
[14:34]
to too much of a hero's welcome and I
[14:37]
think that them as well as all that they
[14:40]
really appreciated what was happening at
[14:42]
our schools and were really touched and
[14:45]
so I was able to make it by a few and
[14:47]
every year I make it to at least one and
[14:49]
the veterans what they say to me
[14:52]
personally does transform my my thinking
[14:57]
in my life and what I value so you can
[14:59]
see by a few those pictures how much it
[15:02]
really means to them and to come and be
[15:04]
recognized so just really hats off to
[15:06]
our school and then I'm going to just
[15:10]
add on to something Karen said and Megan
[15:13]
to or president Russell and our student
[15:16]
rep megan is that we are one high school
[15:18]
district and so every student is going
[15:20]
to be a future griffin and this year
[15:23]
more than any other year we have seen so
[15:25]
much crossover between our sites either
[15:29]
older kids going to younger campuses
[15:32]
and vice versa and so we've also seen
[15:36]
more crossover within disciplines and so
[15:40]
for example the halftime show at the
[15:42]
high school for homecoming had 600 kids
[15:44]
on the field so choir drama dance
[15:47]
cheerleaders song band you know all came
[15:51]
out at the same time to celebrate and
[15:53]
we've really now gone into our k-12
[15:56]
really crossing so I think it matters
[15:59]
and I hope that we continue to do even
[16:02]
more and more to connect our kids to our
[16:04]
communities so thank you very much thank
[16:07]
you very good now we're on to the
[16:11]
McAuliffe middle school report and
[16:12]
student bar report I mrs. Allen good
[16:25]
evening esteemed board members I'm glad
[16:27]
to see you all here good evening
[16:30]
district cabinet good evening teachers
[16:33]
staff parents community members thank
[16:38]
you for coming this evening welcome to
[16:42]
McAuliffe 2016 2017 it is my charge
[16:48]
today Oh Tina Oh hold on to talk with
[16:55]
you about how we accomplish the district
[16:57]
priority goals at McAuliffe and I'm
[16:59]
happy to do so we do want to achieve all
[17:04]
of those goals to the best of our
[17:05]
ability I'm not going to read them for
[17:07]
you but I am going to tell you how we
[17:10]
get there and one of the ways that we
[17:14]
get there is through what i call eagle
[17:16]
pride i can tell you as being a staff
[17:21]
member of McAuliffe middle school for
[17:23]
over 30 years it has never been better
[17:26]
it is remarkable our community is a
[17:30]
professional learning community I
[17:33]
appreciate
[17:34]
and value the board and the district for
[17:37]
giving us the time to collaborate with
[17:41]
one another to collaborate with our
[17:43]
sister middle school and to collaborate
[17:45]
with anyone in the district that chooses
[17:48]
to collaborate but it is most effective
[17:51]
when trying to passionately pursue
[17:54]
academic excellence for all of our
[17:55]
students and I will tell you that our
[17:57]
teachers are absolutely brilliant our
[18:01]
stands for respect for all we pride
[18:04]
ourselves on respecting everyone our
[18:08]
campus is very diverse we love it that
[18:10]
way I for instruction again we try to
[18:15]
deliver outstanding instruction for all
[18:18]
students every day d for differentiation
[18:22]
we have programs in place again thanks
[18:26]
to the board and district office
[18:28]
administration for their generosity
[18:31]
where we can differentiate learning for
[18:34]
every student so that we can meet their
[18:37]
unique needs and finally e we always
[18:41]
strive for excellence so as an
[18:45]
administrator it's my job to try to hire
[18:49]
our teachers every year in some fashion
[18:53]
to get them ready for the school year
[18:56]
and so this year for some reason was a
[18:59]
little more difficult than others and
[19:01]
finally I said hmm well Annie what
[19:04]
inspires you well I'll tell you music
[19:09]
inspires me specifically rock and roll
[19:12]
music delivered by this fabulous band
[19:15]
oops the Foo Fighters I don't know if
[19:19]
any of you know them but they have a
[19:20]
remarkable band for the last 20 years so
[19:24]
on my first day of school meeting I
[19:26]
didn't show a TED talk video I didn't
[19:29]
show an inspirational video from YouTube
[19:31]
rather I showed a rock and roll video by
[19:35]
the foo fighters what a risk I thought
[19:38]
my goodness these teachers are going to
[19:40]
think this 58 year old woman has lost
[19:42]
her mind or they're going to get into it
[19:45]
they got into it
[19:47]
and as I say you're never too old to
[19:50]
rock and so how do the Foo Fighters
[19:53]
inspire us well it started last year at
[19:56]
eighth grade promotion where we sang a
[19:58]
song our era choir sang a song and it
[20:02]
was called times like these and I think
[20:06]
these words so fit appropriately with
[20:10]
what we as educators get to do every
[20:12]
single year every fall we get to come
[20:16]
back and do it all over again and so as
[20:19]
the Foo Fighters say it's times like
[20:21]
these you learn to live again you learn
[20:24]
to give and give again you learn to love
[20:28]
again and it's times like these
[20:31]
especially for an old-timer like me time
[20:34]
and time again and it is a blessing I
[20:37]
need to share that with you oh jeez okay
[20:41]
so like the Foo Fighters we want to
[20:45]
exhibit passion clarity of purpose and
[20:47]
excellence every day we want to engage
[20:50]
and delight all of our fans with our
[20:52]
infectious enthusiasm we want to strive
[20:55]
for greatness at present and for years
[20:57]
to come and someday maybe we'll be
[21:00]
remembered in some sort of Hall of Fame
[21:02]
and as educators what does that
[21:06]
translate to for us in addition to those
[21:09]
things we want to connect with students
[21:11]
and parents we want to exhibit kindness
[21:14]
and compassion for everyone our message
[21:18]
to students is we are your biggest fans
[21:20]
and we will do anything to help you my
[21:23]
message to staff is let your eyes light
[21:26]
up when those students enter the room
[21:28]
and finally we want to provide
[21:31]
opportunities and have a common thread
[21:34]
through everything for community service
[21:38]
so district priority number one
[21:40]
passionately pursuing academic
[21:43]
excellence for all students some of the
[21:46]
things that we do I've already talked
[21:47]
about the instruction we do implement
[21:50]
district signature practices and school
[21:52]
signature practices and we are very
[21:54]
fortunate to be in possession of all of
[21:58]
the technology that we have so that we
[22:00]
can
[22:00]
students digital literacy and use that
[22:03]
technology every day again thank you so
[22:08]
some of the district and school
[22:09]
signature practices that we they are
[22:11]
systemic to our school depth of
[22:14]
complexity thinking maps active
[22:16]
engagement strategies close reading
[22:18]
writing across content areas is
[22:21]
something that we're working on and very
[22:22]
excited about and that of course some of
[22:25]
the new technology that we have
[22:26]
vocabulary com no red ink Google
[22:30]
classroom reading plus turn it in I
[22:32]
could go on and on reading plus is a new
[22:35]
pilot that we're doing right now it's a
[22:37]
very comprehensive reading program we
[22:40]
got it free for the first semester we're
[22:42]
evaluating it tomorrow with some
[22:44]
representatives to determine our next
[22:46]
steps we also are a very researched
[22:51]
based school I'm going to tell you a
[22:52]
funny story so apparent came into my
[22:55]
office a couple of weeks ago and there's
[22:57]
a framed picture of a distinguished
[22:59]
gentleman on the wall and the lady said
[23:02]
to me gee mrs. Ellen your husband is
[23:05]
very attractive and I said that's not my
[23:08]
husband that's dr. Robert Marzano he's
[23:10]
my favorite educational researcher she
[23:13]
laughed a little and I laughed a lot
[23:16]
anyway for the last couple of years we
[23:20]
have pursued learning about his latest
[23:23]
findings in reading the book together
[23:25]
awaken the learner finding the source of
[23:27]
effective education and at our staff
[23:29]
development day this year we filled
[23:32]
Bowen and I assistant principal we did a
[23:35]
staff development presentation on
[23:37]
motivating and inspiring students
[23:39]
strategies to awaken the learner as a
[23:41]
follow up and it was really effective
[23:44]
and again that PLC mentality was so
[23:48]
there it was amazing in order to also
[23:54]
passionately pursue academic excellence
[23:56]
for all kids we also have a number of
[23:59]
student support programs again I'm not
[24:01]
going to read all of them to you I'm
[24:03]
just going to touch on a couple of them
[24:04]
some of them that I'm most grateful for
[24:07]
ni mo
[24:08]
supportive of our the co teaching
[24:10]
classes that we have in English language
[24:13]
arts and math at grade seven and eight
[24:15]
that's when a general education teacher
[24:17]
and a special education teacher team
[24:19]
together to teach a group of students it
[24:22]
is amazing for all students but
[24:27]
especially for our students with special
[24:28]
needs who really benefit from having
[24:31]
that content and curriculum in a regular
[24:37]
class setting it's wonderful we also
[24:39]
have our literacy core at grade six that
[24:42]
is a wonderful program and then many of
[24:45]
the other ones that you see up here that
[24:47]
I've discussed with you in previous
[24:49]
years I will also say that our summer
[24:51]
school program and the bridge classes
[24:53]
that were created last summer we're very
[24:55]
effective in helping meet student needs
[24:58]
and having them reach to higher limits
[25:03]
so now let's prove it are we doing it
[25:07]
well I think so why do we look at s back
[25:10]
testing results well we do that to
[25:12]
inform our teaching we do it to evaluate
[25:15]
our support programs and we do it so
[25:17]
that we can make sure our students meet
[25:19]
their goals and the highest goals
[25:22]
possible so let's take a look at it in
[25:26]
sixth grade English language arts last
[25:30]
year seventy-five percent of our
[25:33]
students met or exceeded standards this
[25:36]
year seventy-nine percent did in 6th
[25:42]
grade math sixty-six percent met or
[25:45]
exceeded standards last year this year
[25:49]
seventy-four percent in seventh grade
[25:54]
language arts last year 75% met or
[25:58]
exceeded standards this year eighty-one
[26:00]
percent in seventh grade math this was
[26:07]
beautiful growth the first year sixty
[26:10]
percent students met or exceeded
[26:11]
standards this year seventy two percent
[26:13]
that's significant
[26:17]
and in eighth grade eighty-one percent
[26:21]
the first year 82 the second in English
[26:25]
language arts and in math sixty-nine
[26:31]
percent meeting or exceeding standards
[26:32]
went up to 72 so it's all going in the
[26:36]
right direction and I'm thrilled about
[26:37]
that of course we want all of our
[26:42]
students to meet or exceed standards but
[26:44]
I think we're on the path and I'm
[26:46]
thrilled to be there okay so district
[26:50]
priority to healthy safe and drug-free
[26:52]
environment there are lots of programs
[26:55]
in place at McAuliffe to make sure that
[26:57]
we have the best environment for our
[26:59]
students obviously we have a safe school
[27:03]
plan we have representatives on all of
[27:06]
our district task forces including the
[27:08]
violence bullying and drug prevention
[27:10]
task forces we have voluntary student
[27:12]
drug testing regular visits by the drug
[27:15]
prevention canine alternative to
[27:17]
suspension program for students who have
[27:21]
problems with drugs or alcohol and I'm
[27:24]
happy to report that we haven't had any
[27:26]
of that this year we also have and again
[27:29]
thanks to you in the cities of Los
[27:30]
Alamitos in Seal Beach to campus
[27:32]
security supervisors I'm thrilled with
[27:34]
that as well lop blocks on all of our
[27:38]
doors we have limited access points to
[27:40]
campus after school is in session window
[27:43]
film on all the windows a new visitor
[27:45]
management system and regular emergency
[27:48]
drills all to keep our kids safe for
[27:54]
district priority three we want to
[27:56]
enhance communication for all
[27:57]
stakeholders and so we have bi-weekly
[27:59]
PTA newsletters frequent use of our auto
[28:03]
dialer and email some might say a little
[28:05]
too frequent but I say you can never
[28:07]
over communicate we have a vibrant and
[28:10]
active PTA school site council our
[28:13]
website and oh my goodness isn't that
[28:16]
marquee just fabulous for district
[28:21]
priority or we want to make sure that
[28:23]
the money that we receive is managed
[28:25]
well so our lcff funding goes to
[28:29]
our literacy core at sixth grade and
[28:31]
some other things miscellaneous things
[28:34]
we have math intervention classes in our
[28:37]
school day grade six seven and eight
[28:38]
thank you we have a technology plan and
[28:42]
we'll be rolling out a
[28:43]
bring-your-own-device program this year
[28:45]
and finally we have ongoing school and
[28:48]
PTA fundraising and if you're interested
[28:51]
in bouncing around in large bounce
[28:53]
houses or going into a hamster ball come
[28:56]
on over on thursday our kids will have
[28:58]
their step it up fundraiser party on the
[29:00]
field periods one through four okay and
[29:06]
finally district priority five to
[29:08]
modernize and maintain and optimize the
[29:11]
use of facilities I can't thank you
[29:13]
enough our school campus is a showplace
[29:16]
and when school campuses look beautiful
[29:20]
they are treated respectfully the
[29:22]
outdoor amphitheater that you looking at
[29:24]
a picture of has already been used so
[29:26]
many times this year and I'm very
[29:28]
appreciative of all the work and the
[29:30]
funds that went into that project but
[29:33]
the whole campus is beautiful
[29:34]
beautifully landscaped repainted lockers
[29:38]
it's just stunning so thank you very
[29:41]
much beautification as you can see and
[29:46]
then how do we bring it all home well we
[29:50]
focus on academics athletics activities
[29:53]
and the arts so an example of academics
[29:55]
here are some of our kids in unmod alene
[29:58]
monday a math thing that we're now doing
[30:00]
i believe district-wide for athletics
[30:04]
this is mr. Robinson one of our PE
[30:06]
teachers this is not even at our school
[30:09]
talk about connectedness mr. Robinson
[30:11]
went to his students travel ball game
[30:14]
just to give them support I thought that
[30:16]
was amazing and so didn't their parents
[30:21]
activities just last weekend one of the
[30:24]
20 clubs that we have at McAuliffe this
[30:27]
is the help me thanks okay I'm sorry I
[30:33]
had a brain fade the best buddies club
[30:35]
there's Nicole manly who has our advisor
[30:37]
and Amory Bergeron our school
[30:39]
psychologists took a group of kids to
[30:41]
the Special Olympics just
[30:42]
week and that's just one of the many
[30:44]
activities we have we have student
[30:48]
socials at grade six seven and eight
[30:50]
dances lots of things for kids to do at
[30:53]
lunch after school piece week was a
[30:57]
success as was red ribbon week these are
[31:00]
some of our kids with their at a lunch
[31:04]
time activity where they record their
[31:06]
random acts of kindness and finally this
[31:09]
was most touching as I said we'd like to
[31:11]
have community service as a as a threat
[31:13]
throughout everything dr. crop was able
[31:16]
to come over to attend this event our
[31:18]
make-a-wish Foundation Club raised five
[31:21]
thousand dollars to grant the wish of
[31:22]
this young lady who was a local girl who
[31:25]
lives in buena park she visited our
[31:27]
school at lunch one day the make-a-wish
[31:28]
Foundation came out and presented us
[31:30]
with a plaque and our students were so
[31:33]
moved by what she had to say her wish
[31:36]
was to meet Carrie Underwood and so she
[31:39]
did and to have kids see that kind of
[31:42]
thing really happened is so gratifying
[31:45]
for everybody involved and of course we
[31:49]
have the arts this was during a red
[31:52]
ribbon week i believe the kids are doing
[31:54]
a flash mob at lunch to a justin
[31:56]
timberlake song and we do all kinds of
[31:59]
things a president Russell talked with
[32:02]
you about the play that was an amazing
[32:04]
event that we had at school already and
[32:06]
we're looking forward to concerts and
[32:09]
all kinds of things with the Arts this
[32:11]
year so thank you for listening to me
[32:15]
this evening I'm appreciative of your
[32:17]
time and appreciative of all that you do
[32:19]
for our school and our students in our
[32:21]
community
[32:32]
yes yes mrs. Allen I just wanted to make
[32:35]
a comment about your test scores we're
[32:38]
not just about test scores but it's
[32:40]
where we actually do get our information
[32:42]
are we doing things properly are the
[32:44]
children making progress should we
[32:46]
continue what we're doing I we really
[32:48]
delve into the data to fine tune the art
[32:51]
that occurs in the classroom instruction
[32:53]
I just wanted to say that to have when
[32:56]
you start when you're above about sixty
[32:58]
or seventy percent in anything to keep
[33:01]
increasing every year becomes more
[33:03]
challenging but if you are the child or
[33:06]
the parent of a child who is below the
[33:08]
at grade level or exceeding grade level
[33:12]
it's so important that we keep
[33:14]
increasing every year and I'd like to
[33:15]
commend you and your staff for all the
[33:17]
effort they put in there to make sure
[33:19]
every child succeeds thank you thank you
[33:21]
very much student member seven so this
[33:30]
year I'm doing a student report that's a
[33:32]
little bit different at our leadership
[33:34]
advanced I was inspired by a video we
[33:36]
saw and that video showed teachers in a
[33:42]
school district that were asked by their
[33:43]
principal to take pictures of students
[33:46]
that made them want to come to work each
[33:48]
day and so I thought I'm going to share
[33:51]
that with you middle school is kind of
[33:53]
like a journey and when you listen to
[33:56]
these students that i'm going to
[33:57]
introduce to you tonight I want you to
[33:59]
listen to their journey and what
[34:00]
mattered most to them so our first
[34:03]
student reporter is Mary Andrews
[34:30]
my name is Marianne Jews I have attended
[34:33]
at school and lots of ladles since third
[34:37]
grade after promoting from Los Alamitos
[34:43]
elementary at the end of fifth grade I
[34:47]
decided to attend to McAuliffe I would
[34:50]
like to give you my impression of what I
[34:54]
have experienced in middle school school
[34:57]
has been challenging ever since I every
[35:01]
once in a while because I have some
[35:04]
health issues but these issues have not
[35:06]
stopped me from being successful I'll i
[35:10]
loved 6th grade car class the teacher
[35:13]
was so nice and always gave me more time
[35:16]
to complete my work when I needed it
[35:19]
seventh grade was my best year the
[35:24]
teachers were super nice and Sui they
[35:27]
were patient and kind to me I had lots
[35:31]
of help completing my work and if I
[35:34]
needed to take a test on a different day
[35:38]
they would always let me do that 8th
[35:41]
grade has been great so far my math
[35:43]
teacher always explains things step by
[35:47]
step to make sure that we know what to
[35:50]
do is my favorite class true story I
[35:56]
have loved everything about middle
[35:59]
school because everybody that I know at
[36:01]
McAuliffe has been kind and caring
[36:04]
towards me the most important lesson
[36:07]
Island less you never give up even when
[36:10]
things are rough and it seems a month
[36:13]
thank you for listening
[36:29]
and that's my marry one of the many
[36:31]
students that makes me want to come to
[36:33]
work each day and now I'd like to
[36:36]
introduce you to Ben Saunders good
[36:48]
evening everyone my name is Ben Saunders
[36:50]
and I've been attending school in Los
[36:53]
Alamitos since I was in kindergarten
[36:54]
going to McCallum entry through fifth
[36:57]
grade I would like to tell you about my
[37:00]
journey at McAuliffe my sixth grade year
[37:03]
was very nerve-racking for me I noticed
[37:06]
a lot of people I saw every day I knew
[37:09]
from elementary school and that made me
[37:11]
feel very comfortable and after a while
[37:13]
it wasn't so bad at all I struggled a
[37:18]
bit in seventh grade too I used to get
[37:20]
confused with my grammar in reading
[37:22]
subjects but by attending study halls
[37:24]
with my teachers and principal Academy
[37:27]
it helped me get through the rest of my
[37:29]
ear so far eighth grade has been simple
[37:33]
and exciting I don't struggle as much
[37:35]
with my grammar and reading subjects I
[37:38]
really got to know my english teacher
[37:40]
very well and that helped me even more
[37:42]
in those areas going into high school
[37:45]
will be a bit frightening but middle
[37:48]
school has done a lot to prepare me for
[37:50]
it will come my way everyone starts at
[37:53]
the bottom and has to work to move up
[37:55]
and I did just that at McAuliffe and I
[37:57]
know that I can do it again thank you
[37:59]
for listening
[38:05]
and that is Ben Saunders and our last
[38:09]
student Desiree Sturrock good evening
[38:18]
members of the board of education
[38:20]
district administrators and staff and
[38:23]
students my name is Desiree Sturrock and
[38:25]
I am an eighth grader at McAuliffe
[38:27]
middle school I have attended school in
[38:29]
the Los Alamitos districts since the age
[38:31]
of five when I was in kindergarten at
[38:34]
Hopkinson elementary school I've had an
[38:37]
amazing journey at McAuliffe starting in
[38:39]
sixth grade my older sister helped me
[38:41]
learn how to find my classrooms but I
[38:43]
still got lost on the first day and
[38:44]
couldn't open my locker until the fifth
[38:46]
try I was eager to work hard and wanted
[38:50]
to be a straight A student but soon
[38:51]
realized that it was harder to achieve
[38:53]
this goal in middle school even though I
[38:56]
focused mostly on school that year I
[38:58]
always had music as an outlet and play
[39:00]
cello for school orchestra music little
[39:03]
path for me and helped me thrive
[39:04]
especially when academic subjects seem
[39:07]
more challenging than ever it was
[39:10]
because of the cello that my music
[39:11]
teacher thought that I might be good at
[39:13]
playing the bass so in seventh grade I
[39:15]
joined them a call if Jasmine as a bass
[39:17]
player joining Jasmine was a big
[39:20]
commitment it's like club sports for
[39:22]
music most of my time was consumed by
[39:25]
poles jasmine and orchestra keeping up
[39:27]
with school and two instruments was hard
[39:29]
during second semester my grades
[39:31]
suffered and I didn't even realize I was
[39:33]
slipping by the end of the year I
[39:35]
started considered quitting orchestra
[39:37]
but I was able to get my grades back up
[39:39]
to all a's except for one b-plus in PE
[39:44]
now that eighth grade has started I feel
[39:47]
more confident and my family teachers
[39:49]
and friends have helped me become more
[39:51]
independent school requires even more
[39:54]
effort but I'm getting better at
[39:56]
managing my time and asking for help
[39:57]
when I need it overall my experiences
[40:01]
teachers and friends I mcauliffe have
[40:03]
helped me in so many ways and i have
[40:05]
many great memories my favorite memory
[40:06]
was something that happened at the end
[40:08]
of seventh grade during the last concert
[40:10]
of the season all the instrumental music
[40:13]
groups almost 200 students played a song
[40:15]
called soul bossa nova
[40:17]
finale at the time I was thinking of
[40:19]
quitting the program because of my
[40:21]
struggles with grades but being with all
[40:23]
my friends and felling musicians and
[40:25]
having the chance to play such a fun
[40:26]
song together helped me realize how
[40:28]
fortunate I was to be part of such an
[40:30]
amazing program and work with such great
[40:32]
people on the way home my mom asked me
[40:35]
what I thought of the concert and I
[40:37]
remember feeling very emotional I told
[40:39]
her that the concert finale helped me
[40:41]
realize just how much my musical
[40:43]
experience that will call if meant to me
[40:45]
and that and at that moment I decided
[40:47]
that no matter what I would continue
[40:49]
playing for mcauliffe I think I learned
[40:52]
some very important lessons from all of
[40:54]
us that sometimes you don't get
[40:55]
everything you want and sometimes things
[40:57]
that are difficult take a lot of time
[40:59]
and effort but the time you put into it
[41:01]
is worth it and being involved in
[41:03]
something you truly love it is what
[41:05]
makes school really great I know that as
[41:07]
I move on to La Salle and become a
[41:09]
griffin i will always carry these
[41:11]
lessons with me thank you for listening
[41:22]
just by meeting these three students can
[41:25]
you see why i love middle school so very
[41:27]
much can we give them one more round of
[41:30]
applause
[41:35]
you
[41:49]
now you have the heroes of the heart all
[41:52]
right it was it is with great pleasure
[41:55]
that I introduce you to McAuliffe
[41:58]
2016-17 hero of the heart recipient Dave
[42:01]
lock I will never forget the day that I
[42:19]
met him he came in to speak with me
[42:22]
about his son schedule and we had a
[42:24]
lively and thoughtful discussion and I
[42:27]
remember thinking this dad really knows
[42:30]
his child and over time I've come to
[42:33]
know that he's devoted to his entire
[42:35]
family to our schools in our community
[42:40]
okay nobody when his children attended
[42:46]
Hopkinson he served on the school site
[42:48]
council was the PTA treasurer for two
[42:50]
years and was the PTA president for an
[42:53]
additional two years and McAuliffe he
[42:55]
has cheerfully volunteered for dances
[42:58]
student socials back-to-school night
[43:00]
events anything that we ask him to do
[43:02]
and that's not all while he does all of
[43:05]
this he served as a board member in
[43:07]
coach for the st. hedwig baseball
[43:09]
program and has been very active on
[43:11]
behalf of his church serving two years
[43:13]
on the governing board and on the
[43:15]
building committee one of his dear
[43:17]
friends shared the following with me
[43:21]
above all Dave brings efficiency in
[43:23]
logic to all of his volunteer positions
[43:25]
he's always the last guy at the field or
[43:28]
at the carnival pitching in his attitude
[43:31]
is contagious and he always positively
[43:34]
encourages others to pitch in and I I
[43:37]
really couldn't agree more Dave thank
[43:41]
you for all that you've done for our
[43:43]
schools and our community
[44:06]
okay thank you for that inspiring report
[44:10]
and now we will be taking the
[44:12]
all-important break for about 10-15
[44:14]
minutes and I believe their cookies so
[44:17]
the most important part okay oh don't
[44:23]
forget we have Pickers up front so while
[44:25]
our awardees let's call this meeting
[44:31]
back to order and we're on first to a
[44:34]
community staff participation and I have
[44:37]
no cards so I assume there is no one
[44:39]
here to speak I we have no information
[44:42]
presentations and so we're moving to
[44:44]
consent and I'm going to pull first item
[44:47]
10k so a motion would be in order unless
[44:51]
there anything I don't think there any
[44:52]
more pulls a through J and L through Z
[44:56]
oh I'll second okay properly moved in
[45:00]
second in any discussion all in favor of
[45:03]
the motion say aye aye opposed motion
[45:06]
carries 50 now we're pulling k because
[45:10]
there's actually zero costs for this
[45:13]
item which on the agenda mossel I think
[45:16]
may use you asked about that today yes I
[45:19]
did okay so we need a motion about that
[45:23]
will say there is no cost I move that we
[45:26]
amend consent item 10 k so it is noted
[45:30]
that there is no cost to the district a
[45:33]
second okay properly moved in second in
[45:36]
any further discussion seeing none all
[45:38]
in favor of the motion say aye aye those
[45:41]
opposed motion carries 50 know we're
[45:45]
onto I'm action with I'm sorry yes
[45:50]
action which is approval to hold our
[45:52]
annual organizational meeting on
[45:54]
December 13 2016 which has to be between
[45:58]
december second and dis
[46:00]
16th so that would fall within that and
[46:02]
that's when we will be doing our board
[46:05]
officers and assignments so motion would
[46:07]
be in order to approve that date so
[46:09]
second and properly moved and seconded
[46:13]
is that our discussion seeing none all
[46:16]
in favor of the motion say aye aye
[46:19]
opposed motion carries 50 and we're on
[46:23]
to consideration and approval with the
[46:25]
career technical more a Memorandum of
[46:27]
Understanding I can't talk dr. baby
[46:31]
thank you madam presidents team members
[46:33]
of the board I'm pleased to bring
[46:35]
forward to you tonight it is a new
[46:38]
salary schedule and some contract
[46:41]
language with our career technical
[46:43]
education teachers we we do partner with
[46:45]
North Orange County rlp for some of our
[46:47]
career technical head but we also staff
[46:49]
two of our own one in our engineering
[46:51]
program and one within our sports
[46:54]
medicine and so as they came on to low
[46:56]
sales staff we had to work to bring them
[46:59]
into the fold of our negotiations with
[47:02]
our association our board had the vision
[47:05]
to really create a a merit-based
[47:07]
compensation structure which really i
[47:09]
think is trailblazing a little bit out
[47:13]
there and the fortunate that we also
[47:16]
have really good relationships with our
[47:18]
association who really when we said this
[47:20]
was the need that we wanted to embark
[47:23]
upon they joined us and so this salary
[47:25]
schedule is both a sour schedule that
[47:28]
honors experience and along with
[47:32]
additional merit incentives across the
[47:35]
board okay if the emotion would be in
[47:38]
order to prove that there's the second any discussion scenic pardon me
[47:46]
it's just a good work oh yeah thank you
[47:48]
and I was just going to say I really
[47:50]
appreciate we gave you quite a task and
[47:53]
I know that it it took some very
[47:56]
creative thinking and it took a lot of
[47:58]
collaboration and we really appreciate
[48:00]
that and appreciate moving forward yeah
[48:05]
and I'd just like to say as well this
[48:07]
was not this was not the board's
[48:11]
micromanaging so
[48:13]
although we wanted this you guys were
[48:16]
the brainchild of the nuts and bolts
[48:19]
behind it and your ability to craft
[48:23]
something that was both acceptable and
[48:25]
novel and good the district i think is
[48:32]
fantastic and I'm excited that we were
[48:36]
able to work within the rules and create
[48:39]
something that's unique that I'm not
[48:40]
sure has been done before and I'm hoping
[48:43]
we can expand upon it in the future so
[48:45]
thank you for your effort ok any further
[48:49]
discussion on a comment seeing none all
[48:51]
in favor of the motion say aye aye
[48:54]
opposed motion carries 50 then we're on
[48:57]
next to on classified personnel and our
[49:01]
certificated personnel dr. pol Berg okay
[49:04]
an emotion be in order to approve c and
[49:06]
d I'll make a motion that we approve
[49:09]
sandy a second okay properly moved and
[49:12]
seconded any further discussion seeing
[49:15]
none all in favor of the motion say aye aye opposed motion carries 50 and
[49:20]
we're on two warrants you have a motion
[49:23]
to approve those I'll move approval of
[49:25]
the warrants has presented for a second okay properly moved and seconded
[49:31]
any discussion I just want to make sure
[49:33]
that we always make very clear to the
[49:36]
public that when we get the pages of
[49:39]
warrants on each individual for our
[49:43]
review and any questions that we may
[49:45]
have related to any warrants are always
[49:47]
answered before we have a board meeting
[49:49]
so I appreciate staff doing that and
[49:52]
making sure that we have those answers
[49:55]
any other comments or discussion seeing
[49:58]
none all in favor of the motion say aye carries 50 acceptance of donations
[50:06]
and now we have coming before us on all
[50:09]
the items from our generous community so
[50:12]
motion would be in order to prove those
[50:14]
donations I'll move up rule has
[50:16]
presented second okay properly moved and
[50:19]
seconded any discussion thank you thank
[50:22]
you yes
[50:23]
see none all in favor of the motion say
[50:26]
aye aye motion carries 50 we're on to an
[50:31]
approval of an agreement of stipulation
[50:34]
to a student suspended expulsion waiver
[50:36]
of hearing and Peele writes mrs.
[50:38]
kassouli it is moved that the agreement
[50:39]
and stipulation to a student suspended
[50:41]
exposure waiver of hearing and appeal
[50:44]
rights for student a be approved for
[50:46]
violation of the following education
[50:48]
codes for 8900 a1 through the spring
[50:53]
semester of the 2016-17 school year with
[50:56]
an agreement and date of october six
[50:59]
2017 okay is there a second second
[51:03]
properly moved in second in and
[51:05]
discussion seeing none all in favor of
[51:08]
the motion say aye all right opposed
[51:10]
motion carries 50 and we're on to
[51:13]
communication and stuff that you dr.
[51:16]
barky thank you so first of all I just
[51:18]
like to say congratulations to Dave meg
[51:22]
and Karen for your re-election and thank
[51:27]
you all for your service to the public
[51:30]
to the service to the community service
[51:33]
to the kids this is not an easy job and
[51:37]
it's a very time-consuming job and it
[51:39]
really takes a level of dedication that
[51:41]
all three of you have and it's an honor
[51:43]
for me to be all over sir with you guys
[51:45]
at least for another couple years you
[51:49]
never know what's gonna happen you never
[51:51]
know it's always a patent it's always
[51:54]
stressful when you have to run a
[51:56]
contested election I know what that's
[51:58]
like and it's not a lot of fun and even
[52:01]
though you're confident that the result
[52:03]
you just never know until you know so
[52:06]
congratulations to the three of you you
[52:08]
can now take a sigh of relief and
[52:13]
continue to do what we do and work hard
[52:16]
to make this school as good as it can be
[52:18]
and to serve the children and the
[52:21]
community I had the opportunity like
[52:24]
some of you to attend the Hopkinson blue
[52:27]
ribbon / veterans day ceremony and was
[52:31]
very moving
[52:32]
and there's a lot of veterans there and
[52:34]
it was really impressive especially
[52:36]
hearing the whatever the three or four
[52:40]
songs of the military branches and as I
[52:46]
heard it being played i purposely were
[52:48]
watching the veterans and some of them
[52:50]
were old folks right they probably did
[52:53]
serve maybe in Vietnam or Korea etc and
[52:56]
you watch them and you can see their
[52:58]
mouths moving and see their eyes
[53:00]
watering up just a little bit and they
[53:03]
just did it's it's special it's it's
[53:06]
special for me to watch them be moved
[53:08]
the way they are and it's great to live
[53:11]
in a community that honors that and
[53:13]
respects that and pays tribute to people
[53:16]
that really are selfless and many folks
[53:20]
go into the military without some
[53:22]
altruistic patriotic sense but they
[53:27]
often come out on the other side
[53:28]
realizing that they're serving a much
[53:30]
bigger purpose than just a job or
[53:33]
themselves etc and that was it was
[53:36]
really really moving it's also nice to
[53:38]
obviously acknowledge the success of a
[53:40]
particular school that's representative
[53:43]
of all that we do in this district and
[53:45]
it's symbolic but important and it's
[53:50]
just a reminder of the work that we do
[53:51]
and the success that we have in doing
[53:54]
the work that we do and it makes it mix
[53:56]
it all worthwhile for that moment so
[53:59]
congratulations again and Thanksgiving
[54:02]
coming up next week can't wait to have
[54:03]
my kids home and I hope you guys enjoy
[54:06]
it and then we'll see you most of you in
[54:09]
csb a up in San Francisco looking
[54:11]
forward to that thank you very much
[54:17]
president Russell just a couple of
[54:20]
things I also attended with mrs. Russell
[54:24]
and dr. barky Hopkinson and that was
[54:27]
just beautifully done ceremony and I
[54:31]
thought everything went off just
[54:34]
flawlessly and they did just a lovely
[54:36]
job it was a little hot for the morning
[54:39]
November but that's okay we should not
[54:42]
complain here in Southern California I
[54:43]
went straight from there too
[54:46]
you Oaks presentation for their veterans
[54:49]
and that was also i love that all of
[54:53]
them are a little bit different and mrs.
[54:55]
cominski did a beautiful job doing a
[54:57]
brunch for them and having a reception
[54:59]
for all of these veterans and then had
[55:02]
them up on stage and she the choir
[55:06]
performed the band performed and i sat
[55:09]
next to a couple of them and and we're
[55:11]
chatting with them and talked about how
[55:13]
they hoped that their children or their
[55:15]
grandchildren were proud that they were
[55:18]
there and it was just really really
[55:21]
touching and mrs. cominski asked me to
[55:23]
say a few words and you know it just was
[55:27]
so reflective for me because i had voted
[55:31]
two days before that and after i voted i
[55:35]
didn't i posted as we all do but i
[55:38]
didn't post who i hope one or who i
[55:40]
voted for i posted to our veterans and
[55:43]
to the sons and daughters of of the
[55:49]
people who made it possible for me to
[55:53]
vote that day and that's what to me the
[55:56]
veterans day coming so close to voting
[55:59]
day was so important because we had an
[56:02]
opportunity to thank them for being able
[56:05]
to have our voices heard because without
[56:07]
them we don't get that opportunity and
[56:10]
so I was really glad to be able to share
[56:14]
that as well and it was just a it was
[56:17]
really beautiful what mrs. cominski and
[56:20]
all of Oak they did a lovely lovely job
[56:22]
and I also had an opportunity to go to a
[56:27]
king and queen pre-meeting event our
[56:30]
educational foundation runs a fundraiser
[56:33]
every year called the king and queen of
[56:34]
hearts several of us up here have run before in the past and this year
[56:40]
they have a really great slate of people
[56:43]
running so find somebody to support and
[56:46]
it was just very nice of how and
[56:50]
everybody except for mrs. cominski are
[56:52]
all community members and that is just
[56:55]
tremendous that our community would come
[56:57]
together to support our schools like
[56:58]
that so
[56:59]
I'm sure you'll be hearing more about
[57:00]
that as we go on I also attended as how
[57:07]
I never say his name right dr. Milt said
[57:12]
the personnel commission meeting and it
[57:16]
was really very insightful because as
[57:19]
many boards do you have Commission's you
[57:21]
have committees that do some of the
[57:23]
legwork for you and then bring
[57:25]
recommendations to the board and and it
[57:28]
was very nice to see how well they work
[57:30]
together what a balance they are and i
[57:34]
will say dr. Pulver handled the meeting
[57:36]
quite nicely thank you very much and so
[57:39]
it was really good to be part of it a
[57:40]
couple of things that I learned there
[57:42]
that we didn't speak about is that the
[57:44]
district office got slocked I understand
[57:47]
by Hopkinson during Halloween so and
[57:50]
that in December we will have something
[57:53]
for our classified employees we do a TK
[57:57]
truck and give them a little bit of just
[58:01]
a little bit of fun during the holidays
[58:02]
when they work because they work during
[58:04]
that time very often I think ever the
[58:08]
public thinks that if school's out
[58:10]
there's nobody working there's still a
[58:12]
lot of people that are working so and
[58:16]
then also learned a little bit about how
[58:19]
subs work for classified employees and
[58:21]
so that was fascinating to me I didn't
[58:23]
know that so I appreciate being invited
[58:25]
to that meeting and two other things
[58:29]
congratulations a1 congratulations to
[58:33]
the taste for los al and Larry strother
[58:35]
they were given an award called the best
[58:40]
of Los Alamitos it was in the news
[58:43]
enterprise and they were the best annual
[58:46]
community festival or event and so I
[58:49]
thought that was really amazing that
[58:52]
it's something that is done for our
[58:54]
school but the whole community really
[58:56]
participates in that so congratulations
[58:58]
to them and then yes congratulations to
[59:02]
Dave meg and Karen and as dr. Burke II
[59:05]
said we know what it feels like and we
[59:09]
are very lucky that we get to continue
[59:12]
to work
[59:13]
with you and get to continue to do the
[59:15]
work and have the incredible balance we
[59:17]
have on this board it's just it's just a
[59:19]
real honor thank you very much thank you
[59:22]
mrs. Russell you're welcome this is
[59:24]
cotulla okay first of all I would like
[59:27]
to thank the entire community for being
[59:30]
reelected on the school board and I know
[59:34]
that Karen a day feel the same way it is
[59:38]
my honor to be able to serve the
[59:40]
children of Los Alamitos I have my kids
[59:43]
have gone through here I have
[59:44]
grandchildren in in the school district
[59:46]
I am passionate about public education I
[59:49]
really feel if you want to change the
[59:51]
world you educate those kids that is how
[59:54]
you change it and to be given the
[59:55]
opportunity to be able to attend
[59:58]
meetings and go to meetings and sit on
[1:00:00]
committees and do things that are more
[1:00:03]
joyful like walking through the
[1:00:04]
classroom and seeing the kids eyes light
[1:00:06]
up when something clicks in their brain
[1:00:08]
it is it is truly a pleasure for me and
[1:00:11]
it is my honor and I want to thank
[1:00:13]
everyone in the community because
[1:00:15]
without the community support we would
[1:00:17]
not be here we have work to do there
[1:00:20]
you're never done in education but we
[1:00:22]
have we're on a great path and I will be
[1:00:24]
able to keep working with the five of us
[1:00:26]
we always look like we agree but you
[1:00:28]
guys know you're the workshop questions
[1:00:30]
all the time and the questions that we
[1:00:33]
send in after we get our agendas like
[1:00:35]
why did we write this check and it's
[1:00:37]
good we all have little different
[1:00:39]
differences of things that were most
[1:00:41]
concerned with but it's a great balance
[1:00:44]
because you can't be concerned with
[1:00:45]
everything all the time so I'm really
[1:00:47]
looking forward to the next four years
[1:00:48]
so thank you for that I was also able to
[1:00:51]
attend the law style chamber breakfast I
[1:00:54]
went to the lake pre-planning party also
[1:00:57]
it was great great combination of people
[1:01:00]
from different aspects within our
[1:01:02]
community should be a fun contest this
[1:01:05]
year the McAuliffe play that they spoke
[1:01:07]
about and that mrs. Russell I mentioned
[1:01:09]
was absolutely fabulous it they had
[1:01:12]
parts in Spanish they had people singing
[1:01:14]
they had people dancing they had artwork
[1:01:16]
up it was such a collaborative effort
[1:01:18]
all of the Arts I was just like in hog
[1:01:21]
heaven there and the kids did a really
[1:01:23]
great job and what was really neat is
[1:01:25]
that they showed that they
[1:01:26]
three main characters that started out
[1:01:28]
as children and went to young adulthood
[1:01:31]
so they had like three stages they
[1:01:33]
triple cast it so there were nine leads
[1:01:36]
in the school play I just the thought
[1:01:39]
was great and it was quite enjoyable and
[1:01:42]
I'm us I wanted to give you a quick
[1:01:43]
update i did have an ROP meeting and
[1:01:46]
what happened if they are LPD meeting
[1:01:47]
that kind of took me by surprise and so
[1:01:50]
I thought I'd share it we're a
[1:01:52]
seven-member board and our member from
[1:01:54]
brass earlier the week on the Monday
[1:01:57]
before a board meeting resigned from his
[1:01:59]
Bray aboard lots of very good personal
[1:02:03]
reasons on why he wanted to resign but I
[1:02:07]
came into the board member but we'd be
[1:02:08]
like if there was this place where karen
[1:02:10]
was supposed to be and it was empty and
[1:02:13]
he did come to that later on and spoke
[1:02:16]
to us and explained that this is what he
[1:02:18]
did and it was a good time for him in
[1:02:20]
his personal life and in December as you
[1:02:22]
guys know when we do our organizational
[1:02:24]
meeting we give out those positions and
[1:02:27]
so we will have another brea board
[1:02:29]
member for i hope our next board meeting
[1:02:31]
will find out but that was just really
[1:02:34]
it surprised me a lot i will miss him
[1:02:37]
Jovelyn else's name he is from Bray or
[1:02:39]
Linda unified school district and brian
[1:02:41]
and los al are the two smaller school
[1:02:44]
districts in there so he was like my
[1:02:46]
buddy so I'm looking forward to ever el
[1:02:48]
sobre have gives us but I was rather
[1:02:52]
surprised and another thing that ROP has
[1:02:55]
started doing lately which is really
[1:02:56]
nice is they have spotlights in the
[1:02:58]
beginning of our board meeting similar
[1:03:01]
to our presentations where they'll
[1:03:03]
spotlight someone either from like in
[1:03:05]
the business office or one of the
[1:03:07]
teachers or something like that because
[1:03:09]
ROP is geographically so large there are
[1:03:12]
a lot of people you don't know as a
[1:03:14]
board member and it's really nice you
[1:03:17]
know when we get to see you know
[1:03:19]
somebody who works in the you know in
[1:03:21]
the on an office we don't see or a
[1:03:23]
teacher that works in the in a high
[1:03:25]
school that we don't get to see so they
[1:03:27]
started doing that and I thought that
[1:03:28]
was really nice and that's it um just um
[1:03:33]
I want to thank the community I want to
[1:03:35]
thank your own and make and
[1:03:37]
it is humbling and when you're sitting
[1:03:40]
there on a Tuesday night watching
[1:03:41]
returns yeah and you start thinking what
[1:03:44]
if i don't get reelected what am I going
[1:03:47]
to do you know with and it's become such
[1:03:49]
a big part of my life and and I was
[1:03:52]
taking you know in or what is something
[1:03:53]
I'm to Karen or Meg or just the dynamics
[1:03:56]
of the board and i think as ours tell
[1:03:58]
our guests tomorrow p one of the best
[1:04:02]
things I feel about Los Alamitos and the
[1:04:04]
reason we did so successful is we have a
[1:04:05]
really strong board and we have us
[1:04:07]
continuity and we all keep kids first
[1:04:09]
and we have a great superintendent in a
[1:04:11]
great team and so it's like I'm gonna
[1:04:15]
run again you use how could I not it's a
[1:04:17]
great team I don't want to see it come
[1:04:18]
apart and although we don't agree on
[1:04:20]
everything I think we just have great
[1:04:23]
respectful discussions and I think
[1:04:25]
that's really important and and I think
[1:04:27]
that's the success of our soldiers I see
[1:04:29]
something other boards are always
[1:04:30]
changing other districts having issues
[1:04:32]
we always have issues but we take them
[1:04:35]
head-on it's a privilege and I'm humbled
[1:04:38]
to have an opportunity spend another
[1:04:39]
four years doing this friday night with
[1:04:44]
that stadium seven o'clock I want it's a
[1:04:48]
big game so our fire our cars our new
[1:04:51]
coach and the team is under great it'll
[1:04:54]
be an awesome event so if you have a
[1:04:57]
chance to come watch some good football
[1:04:58]
and see a student section second to none
[1:05:01]
yeah you know the best in the in the
[1:05:04]
world last year wherever the word was
[1:05:05]
were you know I mean be there friday
[1:05:07]
night at vet stadium it's just going to
[1:05:09]
be a lot of fun and I wish the team a
[1:05:10]
lot a lot and then our band one you know
[1:05:13]
I just put this news and you just take
[1:05:15]
it in like oh we're supposed to be
[1:05:17]
ranked third and regionals and we win
[1:05:19]
regionals you know we're first place in
[1:05:21]
so i wish the band i know we're gonna
[1:05:22]
have a kickoff for them is it tonight's
[1:05:25]
it's the night and right now on our
[1:05:29]
track and they're going to Nationals
[1:05:32]
this weekend I know so you can't get to
[1:05:35]
everything this district but I just wish
[1:05:36]
to ban the best of luck and Tom plunk in
[1:05:38]
the whole crew I mean they're fine I
[1:05:41]
drove by the band working out tonight on
[1:05:44]
the way the board meeting for 30
[1:05:45]
workshop my like they're they already I
[1:05:47]
think they were car
[1:05:48]
the football team some time now at least
[1:05:50]
see you on the field and then then
[1:05:52]
lastly if you have not been to one of
[1:05:54]
our show choir performances the holiday
[1:05:57]
shows coming up if you can't if you can
[1:05:59]
get tickets get a now tribe they have
[1:06:01]
like five performances it's phenomenal
[1:06:03]
and and again a veteran's day I just I'm
[1:06:07]
odd that we just do such a good job in
[1:06:11]
our community of honoring our vets and
[1:06:12]
with the Los Alamos forces training base
[1:06:15]
and a naval weapons station we've got a
[1:06:18]
lot of veterans and we owe him a lot and
[1:06:19]
I echo Diana's thoughts that were
[1:06:22]
sitting there and got a chance to vote
[1:06:23]
we take it so for granted but we live in
[1:06:26]
a country to thank God we we had that
[1:06:28]
privilege and again thank you to the
[1:06:30]
community for their vote of confidence
[1:06:31]
and in us and we'll look forward to the
[1:06:34]
next four years and go south for any
[1:06:37]
night ok well um I to with Julian dr.
[1:06:45]
Barker you were there the low cell
[1:06:46]
breakfast and the chamber breakfast and
[1:06:49]
then I had mentioned in my report that i
[1:06:51]
went to the oak choir performance at
[1:06:53]
maga that was a tremendous it was
[1:06:56]
absolutely fabulous they did a wonderful
[1:06:58]
job and signing day that was that was
[1:07:01]
fun it was really intriguing I also
[1:07:05]
attended a focus group for the man who
[1:07:10]
purchased the bay theater in Seal Beach
[1:07:12]
and they're looking to provide some
[1:07:17]
space for our schools to do performances
[1:07:20]
in and I thought I talked to Dave Mullen
[1:07:22]
campus that hawk performance that they
[1:07:24]
didn't have any side rooms but they do
[1:07:26]
and they're going to be remodeling and
[1:07:28]
fixing their building a mezzanine and
[1:07:30]
they're enlarging it so it's going to
[1:07:32]
seat 425 on people so I'm hopefully
[1:07:36]
we're going to be able to work something
[1:07:38]
though high schools can use that as well
[1:07:40]
and the guy is he's got he is his
[1:07:43]
passion is going in and doing these
[1:07:46]
kinds of things and on he really is
[1:07:48]
community minded and wants to work but
[1:07:50]
the call community groups to do that so
[1:07:52]
I'm really fascinated with that then the
[1:07:55]
Hopkinson flags dormant now wasn't in
[1:07:57]
the picture because I had to go to my
[1:07:58]
practice of my choral group that I man
[1:08:01]
and by the way I know every word for
[1:08:03]
every one of those songs we sang it do a
[1:08:05]
group of debt so before I'm sitting
[1:08:07]
there I'm singing all the songs all the
[1:08:09]
way through so it's kind of neat to know
[1:08:11]
them all and I I too want to thank the
[1:08:15]
confidence that the community is placed
[1:08:16]
upon us to serve term again on on this
[1:08:21]
board it's truly been a pleasure to be
[1:08:24]
on this board to work with everybody
[1:08:27]
here the administration of all the board
[1:08:29]
members I think we have the right tone
[1:08:33]
and I'll know what's important the kids
[1:08:36]
and their learning and and getting them
[1:08:39]
the best possible education that they
[1:08:41]
can have and so with that if there's
[1:08:45]
anything else for the good of the order
[1:08:46]
then no okay then a weird sure
