[28:58] 26 acceptance of gifts and donations.
[29:02] Thank you for 26 articles from Carol Sattler for the high school art department.
[29:07] I recommend it actually that the Board of Education
[29:09] improves the recommended consent and join them consent agenda items A through H as a
[29:14] set on the attachments and below may have a motion.
[29:17] Second, all favor.
[29:20] Done.
[29:28] So, well, congratulations to the President and the Vice President.
[29:35] It's a lot of freedom.
[29:40] So, just a couple things on RN, because we have our work following the board meeting,
[29:49] but a couple updates before I turn it over to Sylvia who's going to give an update over a lot
[29:54] the expansive construction that's occurring throughout the district and if you've driven around, you've
[30:00] It's well underway in a lot of our buildings. But it is definitely a time of transition, so fill us, congratulations, and welcome.
[30:08] Thank you for getting us through your first official meeting, as Claire.
[30:15] And Esther is also in my office, I think, going through a little culture shock of how quiet it is.
[30:21] Of course, some of the buildings and is doing well.
[30:28] So we're happy to welcome both of you aboard in new roles,
[30:32] but very familiar faces in the district
[30:34] who have done excellent work for a long time.
[30:38] A couple of just quick updates from my end,
[30:40] our graduation ceremonies, because we haven't met
[30:42] since then, went off without a hitch.
[30:46] We did move the high school ceremony a day due to the weather,
[30:51] I will use hindsight as an excellent judge to say that it was the absolute right call.
[31:00] Given the perfect gay that we had on the date and we moved it to, and the at about five o'clock on the day of the original ceremony.
[31:11] I know, Sylvia, Claire, to everybody who's texting, it's raining out because you want to get the call as correct as possible.
[31:19] but the ceremony itself was beautiful. The homic ceremonies went off very, very well as well.
[31:29] I was able to get to the central and MAS moving up ceremonies as well.
[31:35] It was not able to attend chats worth of Murray with conflicts, but those all went off beautifully.
[31:41] I think those are really important events for our larger school community to see and to be done well
[31:48] and it's just very pleased with all of that.
[31:52] Our hiring processes are underway, so we currently have two administrative openings.
[31:58] We have the assistant principal position at the high school and the assistant principal position at Murray Avenue School.
[32:07] We screened yesterday for Murray Avenue School and moving forward in that process.
[32:11] We'll be screening on Thursday for the high school assistant principal and moving forward in that process.
[32:17] with the hopes of putting a very quick board meeting on the agenda in late July to finish
[32:26] our any late hiring and to hopefully round our administrative team for the 2627 school year
[32:36] we're certainly not going to rush the process though we want to make sure we find the right
[32:41] candidates but feel feel good that we'll be able to get that done within within that timeline
[32:47] a few other things that are just out and about.
[32:51] If you haven't seen Dr. Moore put out his letter to the community, outlining some of the
[32:57] plans for technology utilization and usage in the subsequent school year and some of the
[33:03] work that's underway there, I know that that was a point of consternation for many members
[33:10] of our community. It's more of a national conversation at this point in time. I feel very good
[33:18] about where we are in terms of our planning and messaging to our community as well as the
[33:26] actions that we're taking to make sure that we're really deliberately utilizing technology.
[33:35] And that's a school community endeavor and I think that all factions of the school community
[33:41] sort of united and coming together and saying let's take a deep dive at this, let's take a look,
[33:45] let's make sure that we're intentional and deliberate, you know, from the faculty and staff on down.
[33:50] And so I do feel good about what the fall will hold, certainly some differences, you know,
[33:57] most profoundly atomics middle school with Chromebook deployment and what that's going to look like.
[34:06] A lot of other things happening we have our college application bootcamp is going to run.
[34:13] Again this year August 20th and 21st that was highly successful last year.
[34:18] I feel good about that this year as well.
[34:21] Our AP summer world experience is set for a number of virtual sessions beginning in August as well that will move throughout the school year for students who are taking that AP world
[34:32] Class for the first time in 10th grade in the fall
[34:36] And then we had our administrative retreat and was very glad to be able to spend three days together.
[34:47] We've been fortunate in the past two years that we've had some days on the back end of June that allow us to utilize.
[34:57] So this year we were able to utilize June 29th and June 30th and July 1st and what that does is it allows us to come together as a team for the retreat for three days before the day start piling into the summer for folks to do their other work and so it allows us to get a jump on the on the summer
[35:18] and first day there we spent just a lot of time reconnecting the team you know we have a lot of new faces and new places
[35:27] And did some activities that really just connected us first and foremost around some shared
[35:39] sense of purpose about why we were in the roles we were in was very happy with how that went.
[35:47] Often then the last two days were really focused on being laser focused on our goal setting across our
[35:55] apartments and our buildings for the 26-27 school year and really focusing on
[36:02] being much more explicit about outcomes and what that can look like and we'll
[36:07] talk more about that in our in our subsequent work session but we really we
[36:15] really pushed our building level and our content area teams across those two days.
[36:22] There was a lot of, for lack of a better term,
[36:26] hashing it out at the table and a lot of challenging folks
[36:30] to go back and revise, go back and revise.
[36:34] And I think it was a terrific time for the administrators
[36:39] to push one another.
[36:42] And we set it up this year very differently.
[36:46] Then we've done the past couple years.
[36:47] we have a follow-up whole administrative session on August 24th and so the intent was to
[36:56] sit here and really lay out in articulator goals for 26.27 have the folks go back into
[37:04] their building-based teams and their content area teams and then work through that over
[37:10] the course of the summer and then we're going to further refine that on August 24th through
[37:15] partnership with the Learner Center collaborative to launch for the 26th
[37:19] school year, 26 27th school year.
[37:24] So feel good about those processes, feel good about
[37:27] the opportunity to...
[37:30] On board, new administrators in that role, you know, we're working through, obviously, you have, we have three new principles for the 26, 27 school year, for anybody doing the math. That's 50% of our principles, and, you know, we have another principles in year two. So that's, that's a lot of, you know, continual onboarding to make sure that we're all, rolling in the same direction and all crystal clear.
[38:00] district expectations and desired outcomes.
[38:06] So via I will turn it over to you to just give us an update of all the good things
[38:10] that are happening in the summer and your neck of the woods.
[38:13] Hi, good morning everybody.
[38:15] This is a bit of a lift, so we have a lot of construction going on.
[38:20] We have a lot of in-house projects going on and contracted projects that are not part of the
[38:29] At Central, we're constructing a new kitchen,
[38:32] serving line at the LGI corridor.
[38:35] Carter, the interior demo is complete.
[38:39] And the trenches for all of the piping underneath
[38:43] have been dug out.
[38:44] So if you go into the building, be careful.
[38:48] We are replacing the exterior stairs to the main office
[38:51] and installing a new handy cap ramp.
[38:54] The excavation for that is complete.
[38:57] They've also kind of laid out how the ramp is going to be doing a great job over there.
[39:03] We were supposed to replace the flooring and staircase A, but it is interfering with
[39:09] the work going on in the kitchen that's up to it and they're doing a lot in the ceiling
[39:13] and storing things there.
[39:15] So that's probably going to wait until Christmas, but that's just cosmetic.
[39:20] Basically, it's still in duck room, duck work in room 306 and 7, which the nurse is
[39:27] all facing.
[39:28] That's for the new kitchen, so that's underway, and replacing the fire alarm panel
[39:33] there.
[39:34] And we know that the parts were delivered and they should be working on that soon.
[39:39] At Chatsworth, we are renovating the floors and walls in the sky gym.
[39:44] Most of the demo was completed.
[39:46] The electric and fire alarm is ruffed in.
[39:48] We are replacing flooring and rooms 10, 11, and 15.
[39:52] That work is done.
[39:54] We are replacing flooring in about 12 or 14 other rooms.
[39:59] The demo for that has started.
[40:02] And just to note that teachers have had to pack up their rooms.
[40:05] So there's a lot of work going in to getting that up and running.
[40:08] So we appreciate that.
[40:10] Replacing the flooring and sewer main pipe and the basement music room and hallway.
[40:14] That demo has started installing some exterior cameras.
[40:18] that's happening today, whether permitting, if not tomorrow, and MES, the doors which
[40:25] are part of the Capitol Projects, about 96% done. All of the mechanical upgrades there are
[40:33] done. Most of it was done less summer. Co-op and ESY using a good part of the building,
[40:39] so it's very limited. What can be done there over the summer? We do have the summer food service
[40:44] program going on there for the community.
[40:46] Lunch is available to any community member, 18 years old or younger,
[40:52] at M.A.S. Monday through Friday through August 28th or 9th,
[40:57] whatever the Friday is, and Chartwells is providing that.
[41:04] I'm not interested actually, that's either.
[41:06] You must eat there, but it cannot be distributed.
[41:08] it, so it's, I don't know what to that why, but yes, it has to be in there. We're replacing
[41:17] the flooring and MES in several rooms that are not being used for by ESY. That's started
[41:24] yesterday, it should take about two weeks. Replacing the flooring at stair landings in the
[41:29] middle building, that is an after camp project, replacing the APR wall padding. That's
[41:35] to camp, finishing up the exterior masonry work at the north side of the middle of building
[41:40] that they started last summer. Again, after camp, installing new railings in the gym,
[41:45] after camp, we placed the fire alarm panel that was done last week at MIS.
[41:51] Murray, the door of place, Matthias, been a work in progress, we're a news join a great
[41:56] job there. We are, guys, completed a renovation of the large basement music room. I don't
[42:04] not familiar with it, but it was done in-house entirely except for the floor. They did a tremendous job.
[42:13] We are installing new ceilings and lights in about seven rooms and that will be complete this week.
[42:20] Installing new sink cabinets in four rooms. That's going to be done the first week of August.
[42:25] installing permanent walls between rooms 233 and 235, that began this week, installing
[42:32] stair tread and flooring into the stairwells, started this week, installing new air
[42:37] conditioning for the, some of the offices, that is also in house and starting this
[42:43] week, and then an AC for one of the IT closets that will be done this summer, and that's
[42:49] what's going on at Murray, the capital work, most of it will not begin until October.
[42:54] So that will be going on throughout the year.
[42:59] At Homics, if you haven't seen it, you wouldn't recognize it.
[43:03] The ceiling, ductwork, flooring, walls, they have all been demoed.
[43:09] It has all come down.
[43:13] This is to renovate and expand the cafeteria and take over two of the rooms.
[43:19] And as a result of that, this project before we started it,
[43:24] We gave the plans to several of our contractors that we know and have faith in what they tell
[43:30] us and they told us, this was not possible to get done in eight weeks.
[43:34] So we knew going in their completion dates of substantial completion date is at the end
[43:40] of September.
[43:41] There is no chance that the cafeteria will be open for the opening of school.
[43:45] So we are moving, we're dividing the gym is already dividing while they are and the athletics
[43:54] and I'm principle are agree that they should have the side of the gym closest to the
[44:02] locker rooms and then the other half of the gym will serve as a cafeteria.
[44:07] The kids can go from there directly outside, we will set up cold food serving lines only for
[44:15] time we cannot move the hot equipment in there the Department of Health would never allow it.
[44:21] I mean, it would require so much work to get it up to that standard and it's just fine.
[44:28] It's just for a month, if it goes a few weeks longer, it goes a few weeks longer.
[44:32] But everyone will have meals, but they will definitely be cold meals.
[44:38] We can't, the Department of Health is not, we would have to regulate the temperatures.
[44:42] we have to bring in ovens. It's just not just absolutely not worth it. You know if it were
[44:48] for the full year, that would be a different conversation but I think when it's hot out,
[44:55] cold salads and sandwiches, you know, we'll be fine.
[45:00] And so, that's a story with the cafeteria, but they are doing really well in terms of keeping up with the timeline.
[45:09] You know, never know what obstacles may come up, but so far it's going very well.
[45:14] We are constructing to new classroom spaces in the hallway. A lot of that is being done in-house.
[45:20] The framing is done. The sheetrock is started, but next week the contractor will actually cut the doorways out for the hallway opening.
[45:29] But that's a work in progress, still at Hamicks, replacing some floors in offices, which
[45:37] was done, replacing, flooring the hallway outside the woman's pool locker.
[45:42] That is set up.
[45:44] It's in comfort, but we don't have a date for that yet.
[45:47] And replacing domestic hot water heaters, West Wing pool for the locker rooms, and that's
[45:52] about half done, and the balance should be done this summer.
[45:55] The high school, I'm sure you've noticed the new doors as you walk around, that's about 96% done.
[46:02] Some of the space here is being utilized by summer school and middle schools.
[46:07] They have co-op camp, they're using the entire science wing.
[46:11] There is exterior masonry work going on throughout post and Palmer, as you've seen probably the lifts in the parking lot.
[46:19] They should be out of the Starbucks parking lot by the end of the week.
[46:25] Exterior rates, and we said that, completing the renovation to the Palmer Old Internship office that's being
[46:31] converted to a testing room that's been an in-house project that's going on for the last few months, but
[46:37] it's kind of they get pulled and they go back to where they get pulled and go back to it, but it is almost done,
[46:41] just needs sealing, replacing some wire mold and outlets, replacing sections of the sidewalks and curving,
[46:49] look along the plane auditorium in the AP office.
[46:52] It's scheduled to December, but no date yet.
[46:55] Replacing the architecture, or buying architecture,
[46:59] drafting tables and stools.
[47:00] Those will be delivered tomorrow.
[47:02] We're doing a lot of work in the pace auditorium
[47:05] replacing the seat for placing the flooring,
[47:08] painting, the seats are out, the painting begins today.
[47:12] They'll paint all the seats have already been removed.
[47:15] They'll paint, then they'll do the epoxy floor.
[47:18] that goes under the seats, then they'll do the carpet and the aisles, and then the seats
[47:23] will be installed, and that is projected to be the second week of September, and I think
[47:30] that's pretty much most of it.
[47:32] So, can you say that?
[47:35] And Steve's doing a great job managing it all,
[47:41] and it's going pretty well, we'll see what
[47:42] happens at the end.
[47:43] Yeah, so there's, thank you, Sylvia, and it's a ton of, there's a ton of work that's
[47:48] you know simultaneously across the district. So just wanted to give that update and one note
[47:55] I think I might have said this at a previous board meeting, but it sounds like a minor thing the
[48:00] doors being replaced, but it's a major endeavor and it's a huge safety upgrade and it's an
[48:08] expense and it's well worth it. You know those new doors literally say locked unlock you press a
[48:15] and you don't fumble with the key,
[48:17] you don't go outside the door or there, you know,
[48:21] so we've been, you know, sort of vigorously
[48:25] replacing those and it's, that's a huge project
[48:28] in and of itself.
[48:31] The work and I know, because I know there are questions
[48:35] because I met with some folks last week as well.
[48:41] The cafeteria work at Hommix, you know,
[48:44] we went through a couple of different iterations of potential. One of the things was looking
[48:49] at a tent outside, but that requires us to be approval, then the health department got involved
[48:54] and so it ended up becoming the gym was the real viable solution there for the short
[49:04] period, which it before it gets constructed. So there was, we did explore multiple options there
[49:10] what that might look like.
[49:13] So they're going to eat lunch and get lunch there.
[49:16] You know, we're going to set up, you know, the six-foot table
[49:18] and how to refrigerate this behind it, just taking out such
[49:21] under a meal at a time.
[49:23] Yeah, there's there'll be plenty of room.
[49:25] And then the tables will be moved, so they can be vulnerable
[49:27] to the objects and the school.
[49:29] But the students will still have to have a gym for work.
[49:33] Yeah.
[49:35] It'll be fluid.
[49:37] It's what it will be for, you know,
[49:38] but hopefully it'll be, you know, four weeks or there
[49:41] about, and then we will have a cafeteria that actually accommodates the student population
[49:47] there, which will hopefully also be a long-term game changer.
[49:52] It's just related to student behavior, it becomes a concern, certainly when kids are
[49:59] piled on top of each other, and that cafeteria has been far too tight for far too long
[50:05] for the number of students that we have in the building.
[50:07] And so, feel good about that, but, you know, it's the messy part of getting there.
[50:17] It includes my report, and I'll find there as any questions or anything.
[50:22] Any reports from the Board of Education?
[50:28] I want to acknowledge Ariana, her full of her years of being the president for the school board.
[50:36] So thank you very much for your dedication and time to the district and all the parents and the administration, etc.
[50:43] So thank you.
[50:48] You said a hard act to follow as I learned today with the 15 pages of Yandex.
[50:53] I didn't say the wrong numbers.
[50:58] I couldn't get the sense what.
[51:03] What do you do somehow or is that?
[51:06] We are.
[51:08] There's a, I believe there's a section or two that are running in August.
[51:16] I believe in one of these act dates, but yes, we are.
[51:20] So, Senator Jen, it's a school year, you can do it that way.
[51:23] You can now do it during the fall.
[51:24] Well, we allowed upper class, rising seniors had had first dibs at the opportunity, and I think
[51:34] they basically populated all of the space, and so we don't have the bandwidth to just simply
[51:42] open it up.
[51:43] but it was certainly an option for some students this summer.
[51:46] So for that mix a little sense.
[51:48] So you're going to see, you're going to see us continue to expand some of these summer
[51:52] opportunities.
[51:54] That's been a goal over the past couple years.
[51:56] It's something we're trying to do.
[51:59] There are plenty of ways that students can take advantage of the summer to allow increased
[52:07] flexibility with their schedule to meet some other needs in different ways.
[52:11] and we certainly are committed to trying to find as many of those opportunities as possible.
[52:20] So, when you're talking about it all ramping for APs in the summer,
[52:23] so we're doing, which ones are we doing in the summer, just world,
[52:27] or we do the American history.
[52:29] Right now, just world.
[52:30] So AP World has been opened up net for next year for 10th graders and for pretty much all of those students and for all of those students will be their first AP course, and so we built down a program that MSF has actually funded for year one.
[52:54] that entails a number of sort of virtual sessions and then drop in opportunities
[53:00] for continued reinforcement as the year goes on and several of our teachers have been
[53:06] instrumental in developing what that might look like and I think the first couple of days
[53:12] of that are August 25th and 26th. We just wanted to make sure that we give our students support.
[53:20] In that, we also certainly looked at and targeted students that might need more support in that first AP class with some direct conversation about this is something you should take, something you should take part of.
[53:35] And it was a real collaborative process with some of the AP world instructors and Dr.
[53:42] Moore's office to put the, and Ms. Groeninger to put the program itself together.
[53:49] Ultimately, we may move into, you know, we used to, create an AP summer bridge that was a little bit more holistic in my past life.
[54:02] It was really sort of disciplined based.
[54:07] We haven't gotten there yet.
[54:08] We started with, we know that we have 260 students signed up for this.
[54:12] We know that that will be their first AB and so for our first blush for what that world,
[54:18] what that summer experience might look like.
[54:20] We felt that the return on investment and support was there for the number of students
[54:26] that are going to take that for the first time.
[54:28] And then, like, just like everything else, we'll look at next year about how we continue to expand and grow those opportunities.
[54:36] What other APIs did you have you introduced for this year?
[54:39] For this coming school year?
[54:41] AP World is the first new one for this year.
[54:46] The past couple years, AP psychology was really the big one this past year,
[54:51] in terms of enrollment, AP, Spanish literature, AP, art, history, AP, cyber security,
[55:03] have all been introduced in the past couple years.
[55:06] We just want to recognize by the college board actually for being in their
[55:13] innovation zone to pilot the AP cyber, because we were the first districts in the country to do that.
[55:21] that went very successful. They invited me to be on a board in New York state, which I respectfully
[55:28] declined. But that was, that was some recognition this year as well. At the national level, we're
[55:37] one of the few districts in the country to initiate that course. Congratulations. Yeah, thank you.
[55:46] So one is the 260, like how do we think about that number?
[55:51] We happy, two was a more than expected last, and maybe in the context of when we see junior sign up for APs,
[55:57] as percentage wise, is it everybody who would have signed up junior year?
[56:01] We think, and then the other question is, I know the goal was used to PSAT to identify students who were qualified,
[56:08] but might not otherwise have signed up and have that go anecdotably.
[56:11] So there's a number of students that were flagged as being having the potential for that and we work through some of those individuals, there's sort of a master list there.
[56:25] The number itself is interesting.
[56:27] We knew the number would be large.
[56:32] It's a different kind of AP because it can stand in the place of that tenth grade requirement.
[56:38] Right, and so that that becomes more attractive to a wider range of students because they can meet that
[56:46] That history requirement through it. So it's not just an elective. It's also a core. So we anticipated large
[56:55] You know
[56:57] I'm not quite there was no number that we had in our heads about what it looked like
[57:02] You know, we wanted to make sure that
[57:04] that we could appropriately staff, staff it, you would think that it doesn't impact staffing,
[57:11] but you've got to be very careful because there were other considerations when you
[57:16] run a course like that.
[57:17] You have to watch for some of the other classes when they're loaded with IEPs and such
[57:23] and so there's a lot of massaging and managing that.
[57:28] Like everything else, we're going to run through it next year, and we'll take stock across the scope of the year about how it's going, and if we need to put tire controls or make some changes, we'll do that in a subsequent year, but I think we're equipped to initiate it well this year, I think we have a core group of teachers that are really excited about it.
[57:56] and multiple teachers.
[57:59] Yes, but they've been working very tightly together and they've been mapping out their scope and sequence
[58:05] in relation to the AP course and we've done a lot of really good work.
[58:11] There's a lot of work to be done over the summer there for some summer time to work together
[58:14] on developing this as well.
[58:17] And so, I think the initiation of it is a perfect example of sort of faculty and staff administration working together to develop something that might really meet a student, meet some student demand and need and I'm excited by it.
[58:39] My daughter just took it, but she took it as a junior, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a difficult exam.
[58:49] I would say she got a five though.
[58:50] I will take that.
[58:56] But it works like it.
[59:00] We're excited and these are types of things that we want to keep expanding and want to keep building out.
[59:05] And there's a lot of, it puts a lot of pressure to make sure that you're staffed appropriately,
[59:13] that you've got the right deployment of fact-things to have to do it, and that you're meeting
[59:18] students, you know, you're anticipating student needs in year one to do it as thoroughly
[59:24] as possible, long-winded way of saying, you know, feel pretty good about it.
[59:30] We did not have preconceived notions, we knew the number would be large, you know, and
[59:35] The AP psychology was really a barometer for that because that, you know, that we could probably run 20 sections of AP psychology if we were able to.
[59:47] I think we went from 6 to 8 next year on that as well.
[59:51] And so we know that certainly the demand is there from that.
[1:00:03] Can I ask you a question about that? Well, those students be required to take the global regions and how does that affect what they're actually learning in the AP classes that line up with what they would need to know for the regions?
[1:00:15] You know, it's a good question, say something. I got a check with Jeff on that. I don't believe they will be required to take the global regions if they take that course. I think it stands in in in lieu of that course.
[1:00:29] Correct.
[1:00:33] Correct.
[1:00:34] I'm almost positive on that, but I want to speak Jeff's upstairs. So when we go up there just ask him if he'll know definitively, but I don't.
[1:00:41] I don't, I don't believe they have to, I think that stands in a little of that.
[1:00:53] Yeah, there are definitely ripples, you know, when you start playing with some of this that you got to anticipate.
[1:01:10] This is where I saw it, I knew that the seats were up.
[1:01:15] Board of Education, regular meeting dates and study sessions for the 26th, 27th school year.
[1:01:21] Welcome to the action of the Board of Education.
[1:01:23] Approves the attached Board of Education regular meeting dates and study sessions for 2627.
[1:01:28] May I have a motion?
[1:01:30] I'm a motion.
[1:01:32] I'm saying.
[1:01:33] All in favor?
[1:01:35] And may I have a motion to adjourn?
[1:01:38] I mean...
[1:01:39] Motion.
[1:01:40] All in favor?
[1:01:42] We're out!
