[2:04]
>> Thank you, Miss Hbach. Uh last week was
[2:06]
National Teacher Appreciation Week. This
[2:08]
is an opportunity to recognize and thank
[2:11]
our namin teachers for the extraordinary
[2:13]
dedication, compassion, and
[2:14]
professionalism they bring to our
[2:16]
schools each and every day. Also want to
[2:18]
give a shout out to the PTO volunteers
[2:20]
who organized a number of breakfast,
[2:22]
lunch, and other fun activities to thank
[2:24]
and honor the teachers in their schools.
[2:27]
May 6th was National Bike and Walk to
[2:30]
School Day. groups of students at and
[2:32]
staff at both Carlsonburg Middle School
[2:34]
and Albert Schweitzer Elementary School
[2:36]
got up early that morning and rode their
[2:38]
bikes to school together through the
[2:39]
Highland Park neighborhood. Thanks to
[2:41]
the Middletown Township Police
[2:43]
Department who not only provided traffic
[2:45]
control for the rides, but also brought
[2:46]
their own police bicycles and joined the
[2:49]
ride. Congratulations to the students in
[2:52]
Sage Atwood's second grade class at
[2:54]
Tanka. They participated in the Philly's
[2:56]
fanatic about reading program by each
[2:59]
reading a 100 books and keeping a
[3:01]
journal about that over the past few
[3:03]
months. They earned a highly anticipated
[3:05]
visit by the fanatic himself on May 5th
[3:07]
for an all school assembly. It was an
[3:09]
exciting morning and the fanatic put on
[3:12]
quite a show as he usually does.
[3:16]
Tonight was the spring signing night
[3:18]
over at the high school for all of our
[3:19]
senior athletes heading off to play
[3:21]
their sports in college next fall. 27
[3:24]
students were on schedule to be honored,
[3:26]
which may be a record for one of these
[3:28]
ceremonies. I congratulate the students
[3:30]
on their achievement. Wish them the best
[3:31]
as they head to the next level. Also
[3:33]
thank their coaches for everything
[3:34]
they've done to support our student
[3:36]
athletes. Finally, tonight, I want to
[3:39]
tell you about something that happened
[3:40]
during the recent junior class trip to
[3:42]
Virginia and Washington DC. As you might
[3:44]
have heard, there was a shooting
[3:48]
incident at the National Mall between an
[3:49]
armed suspect and the police on May 4th.
[3:52]
Thankfully, nobody was seriously
[3:54]
injured. The situation was quickly
[3:56]
controlled by the police. This happened
[3:58]
while our students were enjoying some
[4:00]
free time around the DC monuments after
[4:02]
a lunch cruise. They had split into
[4:04]
smaller groups and a few students
[4:05]
witnessed the incident. Two of our
[4:07]
assistant principles, Miss Bobby Simsky
[4:09]
and Miss Vanessa Robinson, were on the
[4:11]
trip along with other chaperons and
[4:12]
class officers. Along with principal
[4:14]
Garska, the administrators quickly
[4:16]
developed a plan to reunite students and
[4:18]
gather everyone safely in one location.
[4:20]
Roads were closed by police and tour
[4:22]
buses were scattered as a result. It was
[4:24]
definitely a difficult and emotional
[4:26]
situation to navigate. The two assistant
[4:28]
principles along with class adviserss,
[4:29]
Mr. Dave Fank and Miss Lorie Johnson,
[4:31]
got all the students to reunification
[4:33]
location safely with the help of other
[4:35]
chaperons. They arranged a new pickup
[4:37]
location for buses and was designated
[4:39]
which buses would stay back with the
[4:41]
students that were held by police
[4:43]
collecting witness statements. Parents
[4:45]
and guardians back home were kept
[4:46]
informed throughout the ordeal. Miss
[4:48]
Simowski and Mr. Garska coordinated with
[4:50]
school counselors to ensure the students
[4:52]
had access to counselors upon their
[4:53]
return to school on Tuesday morning due
[4:55]
to the traumatic event. In the days
[4:57]
following this unfortunate but
[4:59]
successful end to an otherwise great
[5:00]
trip, I received multiple positive
[5:02]
comments about how how our
[5:04]
administrators, our chaperones, and the
[5:06]
students handled themselves during and
[5:09]
after the incident. We often say that
[5:11]
nothing is more important to us than the
[5:12]
safety of our students and staff. And
[5:14]
the quick and decisive response to this
[5:16]
incident by the adults on the trip shows
[5:19]
that we live by no matter we live by
[5:21]
that no matter what the circumstances.
[5:24]
While I'm sorry that such a memorable
[5:25]
trip had such a had to end in such a
[5:28]
frightening way, I'm grateful and proud
[5:30]
over on Sham High School staff and how
[5:33]
our staff and students and how they
[5:34]
handled and got through this together.
[5:36]
And that is all I have this evening.
[5:38]
Miss Holland.
[5:40]
>> Thank you, Mr. Bowman. Is there any sign
[5:43]
offs for public comment?
[5:44]
>> Yes, Nicole Lackey.
[5:53]
» It just hit the red button.
[6:01]
» Good evening board members and Mr.
[6:02]
Bowman. Um, I wanted to speak to the
[6:04]
incident that Mr. Bowman just spoke
[6:06]
about. My son is a junior who was on the
[6:08]
trip and he and his friends were in the
[6:11]
vicinity of the shooting. I am extremely
[6:14]
grateful for the professionalism of all
[6:16]
of the teachers and staff. I think that
[6:18]
the way that they thought um outside of
[6:20]
the box in a situation that they did not
[6:23]
train for, have not trained for, and
[6:24]
were not anticipating was exceptional.
[6:27]
My son at 3:48 texted me a video of Vice
[6:31]
President Pence's um not Pence, sorry, Uh the Vice President's motorcade
[6:38]
go past and it was quite a sight and
[6:41]
they were very excited. They were right
[6:42]
in front of the Washington Monument. Uh
[6:44]
ironically, my son's ebike died and he
[6:46]
had to walk his bike back across to the
[6:49]
other side of the crossing. His friends
[6:51]
went across. That is where the shooting
[6:53]
took place. It wasn't 15 minutes later
[6:55]
he was calling me and he was panicked
[6:57]
that this had occurred. I will say that
[7:00]
the staff handled it amazingly.
[7:02]
that Remind app um is it was a
[7:05]
lifesaver to gather 400 students um in a
[7:09]
moment's notice and and get the
[7:11]
information out. So as a parent who was
[7:13]
receiving a call three hours away
[7:14]
feeling helpless I knew that under the
[7:16]
guidance of Mr. Frink who is the class
[7:18]
adviser um and my son is the vice
[7:20]
president of the class. He works very
[7:22]
closely with him. Mrs. Simahowski, Miss
[7:24]
Johnson, Mr. Calderbank, Mr. Perry, Mr.
[7:27]
Davis, Mr. Dylan, Mrs. Winchester, and
[7:30]
I'm sure there's a few that I've I've
[7:31]
left out. They did an exceptional job,
[7:33]
and I would like as on behalf of the
[7:35]
parents who I have spoken to about this,
[7:37]
them be awarded in some way or
[7:39]
accommodated because what it was
[7:41]
exceptional. I'd also like to speak on
[7:43]
behalf of Mr. Garska. Um, my son's bus
[7:46]
was the last bus to pull in at the high
[7:48]
school at about 10:20 p.m. Every other
[7:51]
bus had had already left. Mr. Garska was
[7:53]
personally taking the bags off of the
[7:55]
bus and I can't imagine how stressful
[7:58]
this was for him to receive those phone
[8:00]
calls from his staff at 4:00 in the
[8:02]
afternoon and I'm sure the emails and
[8:04]
phone calls he got from parents over you
[8:06]
know on our side but he was there on
[8:08]
take taking the bags off of the buses
[8:10]
and I just I think that that's pretty
[8:11]
amazing. So huge shout out. I know that,
[8:14]
you know, people come up here and
[8:15]
complain all the time, but I really just
[8:17]
wanted you to know on behalf of the
[8:19]
parents who were on the other end of
[8:20]
that phone call how grateful we are that
[8:22]
you're trained, your staff was trained
[8:24]
so well. I know I went over three
[8:26]
minutes. I promised Mr. Van I would not.
[8:27]
So, thank you very much. Thank you.
[8:30]
>> You're saying nice things.
[8:34]
» No further signups.
[8:36]
>> Thank you. Uh, we have a few resolution
[8:38]
actions for this agenda. Uh, Miss
[8:41]
Marshall, please.
[8:43]
>> Sure.
[8:43]
>> I'd like to make a motion for 2.01202627
[8:45]
01 202627
[8:48]

and the military equals $198.0124,
[10:06]
meaning there is a tax increase included

[17:24]
Every year they decorate the offices and
[17:27]
I think about 80 students attended and
[17:30]
more than 100 IU staff volunteers were
[17:32]
there to help ensure a safe, inclusive
[17:35]
and well-coordinated experience. Um I'm
[17:38]
not sure what their prom theme was this

but everybody had a a great time. Uh the

Chris Chris Lyman 1251 Taylor Drive Lang
[19:10]
Horn. How do we actually see like the
[19:12]
attachments that you reference on this
[19:15]

[19:44]
>> Just one real quick, I promise. Um, I
[19:46]
wanted to say thank you to the shamin
[19:50]
staff on the trip in Washington DC. I
[19:53]
think that was wonderful and thank you
[19:54]
for um, talking this evening. Also, I
[19:58]
forgot to mention when we had our
[20:01]
education meeting the other night to
[20:03]
thank our teachers for the job well done
[20:05]
that they do. We do appreciate you and
[20:07]
all the work that you do. So, thank you.
[20:11]
>> Thank you. Anyone else?
[20:14]
>> I also want to quick echo the summons
[20:16]
about the junior class trip. I was
[20:18]
approached by people within the
[20:20]
community saw posts on Facebook and so
[20:22]
often we do read the bad and the
[20:24]
complaints and the negative. So, it was
[20:26]
really nice to see that a the community
[20:28]
kind of wrapped themselves around it.
[20:30]
Um, and you know, definitely
[20:33]
the teachers and students deserve a lot
[20:35]
of praise for a job well done. Um, and
[20:37]
everybody came back safely. So, thank
[20:39]
you for speaking up today and thank you
[20:40]
Mr. Bowman for sharing as well.
[20:47]
Um, with that being said, let's see
[20:49]
future meetings. The next meeting is
[20:52]
Tuesday, May 26. at the public board
[20:54]
meeting here at 700 p.m. As was
[20:57]
previously stated, we have a business
[21:00]
operations committee meeting on
[21:01]
Wednesday, May 20th at 6:30 and the
[21:04]
policy committee Thursday, June 4th at
[21:07]
6:30.
[21:08]
With that being said, I'd like to make a
[21:10]
motion to adjourn the meeting.
[21:15]
» Thank you everybody. Have a great night.
