huge supporter of Newark through his

secure and this is no misprint

[14:44]
leadership indeed two years ago we
[14:46]
gathered in these Chambers to witness TR
[14:48]
the transition to a new mayor the third
[14:51]
one in my
[14:53]
lifetime today for the first time in
[14:56]
over 50 years we will be swearing in
[14:58]
three new council members members and we
[15:00]
will all witness 51 years of combined
[15:02]
leadership steep down from office if
[15:06]
that doesn't scream new workk then I
[15:07]
don't know what
[15:09]
would I would like to take a moment on
[15:11]

and in 1995 you won your seat by a slim
[16:27]
margin of five
[16:29]
votes given your place in New York
[16:32]
electoral history it is only fitting

over the Civic Center complex which all
[17:11]
of you have championed and helped
[17:15]
build a council like all other
[17:18]
organizations is defined not by one
[17:20]
individual but instead by the strength
[17:21]
and resiliency of all of its members
[17:25]
this Council was truly greater than the
[17:26]
sum of its parts and I have every Reon
[17:29]
to believe the new Council will continue
[17:31]
in that vein New York voters have spoken
[17:34]

[18:03]

[18:04]

[18:08]
educational background which includes a
[18:10]
master's degree and a law degree will
[18:11]
bring a scholarly uh perspective to our
[18:15]
Council from serving as a teacher in our
[18:17]
school district to serving on our
[18:18]
Planning Commission and to previously
[18:20]
practicing law you will offer many
[18:23]
perspectives also I hope this doesn't
[18:26]
mean I have to stop making lawyer jokes
[18:31]
miss little your background as a college
[18:33]
professor in Hospitality management will
[18:36]
bring a renewed sense of passion for our
[18:38]
recreational programming I have no doubt
[18:41]
that your unbridled enthusiasm will be
[18:44]
infectious to all of us and will Ripple
[18:46]
throughout our Council City staff and
[18:48]
our entire nework Community I foresee a
[18:51]
lot of smiles and laughter in our
[18:54]
future mayor Hannon it has been a
[18:57]
pleasure working with you past 10 years
[19:00]
under your leadership the past two years
[19:01]
as mayor the city adopted its first
[19:04]
facilities master plan updated our Parks
[19:07]
master plan began construction of our
[19:09]
first resource center and adopted the
[19:11]
city's housing element which contains
[19:13]
many projects and programs to address
[19:16]
affordable
[19:23]
housing he was showing me quickly a
[19:26]
replay on the Niner game I'm not GNA
[19:29]
I'm not I'm not going to let anybody in
[19:31]
on it but
[19:35]

[19:50]
and we look forward to your continued
[19:52]
leadership finally I would like to make
[19:54]
one final comment City staff remains
[19:57]
committed to the success of our entire
[19:59]
nework community that professionalism
[20:02]
and commitment extends to all facets of
[20:05]
this organization including all the way
[20:06]
up to the New York City Council there
[20:09]
are many devoted and talented staff
[20:10]
members who are here with us this
[20:12]
evening and we all stand at the ready to
[20:15]
implement the council's new vision for
[20:17]
our Beloved Community turning to the
[20:20]
staff report at hand uh californi
[20:23]
election codes section 15374 requires
[20:27]
that before installing new officers of
[20:28]
legislative body the body must adopt a
[20:31]
resolution reciting certain facts
[20:33]
related to the outcome of the election a
[20:35]
resolution has been prepared and that
[20:37]
resolution satisfies those legal
[20:39]
requirements the election results are as
[20:41]
follows for the two-year term to serve
[20:44]

[21:29]
member of the city council nework voters
[21:31]
have elected Miss Eve Marie
[21:34]
[Applause]
[21:40]
little uh also measure LL was an
[21:43]
initiative placed on the ballot by the
[21:44]
city council seeking voter approval to
[21:47]
increase the trans and occupancy tax
[21:49]
commonly known as the hotel tax from 10%
[21:52]
to 14% with the additional Revenue to be
[21:54]
used for various purposes voters
[21:57]
approved the measure by over
[21:59]
80% staff recommends that the council
[22:01]
adopt a resolution that is attached to
[22:03]
the staff report I'd be happy to answer
[22:05]
any questions that the council may have
[22:07]
and again on behalf of All City staff we
[22:10]
sincerely thank you for your
[22:11]
extraordinary service thank
[22:19]
you before we take a vote on the the P
[22:23]
specific resolution is there anybody in
[22:24]
the audience that would like to speak
[22:26]
and I'm certainly going to invite former
[22:28]
mayor Nei to have an opportunity to say
[22:30]
a few words mayor
[22:38]
Nei this will not uh constitute the
[22:42]
payback that you're going to get
[22:45]
Michael but when I told people I was
[22:47]
going to make a retirement speech today
[22:49]
there was a lot of excitement until I
[22:52]
told him I wasn't the one who was
[22:55]
retired but LS frus and suu Kazo are
[22:59]
retiring and this is the day that their
[23:01]
spouses will remember
[23:03]
forever
[23:05]
I I was on the city council when you
[23:08]
were first elected and I wanted to be
[23:10]
here tonight when you retiring from the
[23:12]
city
[23:13]
council most mostly to thank you both
[23:17]
for your service to New York and to let
[23:19]
you know how much I have appreciated
[23:21]
your support over these many years you
[23:25]
have both served with honor and disting
[23:27]
distinction you've done things your way
[23:30]
and the Newark way upon reflection if
[23:33]
you ask yourself is Newark better off
[23:35]
today then when you first joined the
[23:37]
city council the resounding answer would
[23:40]
be yes Susie now you have much more time
[23:44]
to shop
[23:46]
nework Lewis arado my friend and to you
[23:49]
both
[23:50]
godspeed and now a new generation of
[23:53]
leaders will be at the Helm of the ship
[23:55]
nework to each of you congratulations
[23:58]
and good luck may you always guide the
[24:00]
ship nework through calm Waters thank
[24:03]
you and congratulations
[24:11]
again is there anyone else yes mayor
[24:14]
Carol please join
[24:18]
us so I did not write any comments so
[24:21]
this is all going to be off the top of
[24:23]
my head so the reason I came this
[24:25]
evening of course is to return the
[24:27]
kindness because May Hannon came to
[24:29]
Union City two nights ago and um
[24:32]
interjected some humor at our city
[24:34]
council meeting in Newark so we really
[24:35]
did appreciate that um so I congratulate
[24:39]
you on your re-election and I have to
[24:42]
say that I've only known three Fremont
[24:44]
mirors Dave Smith Al Nagi and now you
[24:47]
Mike and all three of you are true
[24:49]
gentlemen and I've been honored to work
[24:51]
with all of you and for you in the last
[24:53]
two years you've um certainly no
[24:56]
disappointments whatsoever you've been
[24:58]
Fant fantastic for the three that are
[25:00]
leaving I hadn't planned on making any
[25:02]
comments but I want to be sure to
[25:03]
recognize you um I first ran for Union
[25:06]
City City Council in 1997 and Louie was
[25:09]
already on the newerk council so um to
[25:12]
help the Portuguese population un Louie
[25:14]
came into Union City to to Wi of my
[25:17]
campaign breakfast so how much um but
[25:20]
what I did also want to say Louie is
[25:22]
that since you were not at last week's
[25:25]
Alam um County transportation commission
[25:28]
meeting what you did Miss for all of us
[25:31]
Commissioners that were leaving were
[25:33]
nothing but kind words about what a kind
[25:36]
gentleman you were Hayward mayor Mark
[25:38]
Selena since you sat next to him
[25:40]
mentioned how wonderful it was and and
[25:43]
how he really enjoyed that so you got
[25:45]
nothing but alkalides at that meeting so
[25:48]
I think they're filmed you could go
[25:49]
online and watch it if you
[25:51]
like um Susy it was a pleasure getting
[25:54]
to know you as a council member I really
[25:56]
appreciate that and I do come and Shop
[25:59]
nework I come over to Tortilla Factory
[26:01]
and spend a few dollars every now and
[26:03]
then along with some other places um and
[26:05]
for Anna um this wasn't the first rodo
[26:09]
for Anna as you all know and I think
[26:12]
really the teamwork and as you were
[26:14]
talking about Mike the fun Fremont Union
[26:16]
City of North that I think I want to
[26:19]
take credit with Anna and a new rran
[26:22]
from Fremont because the three of us
[26:23]
when we were serving on as City Council
[26:25]
Members together uh with lean California
[26:28]
city meetings with carpool and have a
[26:30]
wonderful time and uh so really the
[26:33]
three of us women and I think we were
[26:35]
the only three women on the council at
[26:37]
the time I knew was only one in Fremont
[26:39]
Anna was in nework and I was in Union
[26:41]
City as well so in any case I always
[26:43]
appreciated those adventures and
[26:46]
speaking of women I do want to commend
[26:48]
new works Community for um El leing to
[26:51]
women to be on the council um that is
[26:54]
fantastic I'm sad to say that in Union
[26:57]
City for the first time in 50 years
[26:59]
there will be not a female on the city
[27:02]
council so um I'm very sad about that
[27:06]
but uh in two years maybe we can turn
[27:08]
that around not that I'm going to run
[27:10]
again somebody else so again
[27:13]
congratulations to all of you Terry um
[27:16]
Terrence I should say I had a pleasure
[27:18]
it was a pleasure working with you when
[27:19]
I was a council member and you were in a
[27:21]
different role with the city of Newark
[27:23]
so I do appreciate that and for the two
[27:25]
new women coming on board I wish you
[27:27]
luck as as well because um like like we
[27:31]
say we got to keep the women on the
[27:32]
council cuz in in my opinion it's a
[27:35]
different flavor with a woman in the mix
[27:39]
so again thank you for all of you and
[27:47]
congratulations is there anyone else in
[27:49]
the audience who' like to speak under
[27:50]
public comment if not we're going to go
[27:52]
ahead and move on colleagues this is
[27:54]
your opportunity to say a few words as
[27:57]
you
[27:58]
uh prepare to leave the dis uh but one
[28:02]
of those folks that's not leaving though
[28:04]
council member jorgus let me turn it
[28:05]
over to you for a few minutes yes thank
[28:08]
you mayor um just briefly because I know
[28:10]
three of you are going to want to speak
[28:12]
I do want to say to thank all of you for
[28:15]
um you know serving you know New York
[28:17]
alongside me for the last two years or
[28:18]
the last six months uh council member
[28:20]
fedus you've served New York for 29
[28:22]
years that's most of my
[28:25]
life and so much so much of what you've
[28:27]
done is shaped the nework that I wanted
[28:29]
that I grew up in and wanted to come
[28:31]
back and serve so I really want to thank
[28:33]
you in the last two years you know I've
[28:34]
been terrific um sitting next to you I
[28:37]
can't remember how many times you know
[28:39]
you brought up some comment and I was
[28:40]
like you know writing something down
[28:42]
really quickly because I hadn't thought
[28:44]
of that point before and you know just
[28:45]
bring something you know that you know
[28:48]
you've just given so much to Newark that
[28:50]
you know it's meant a lot to me to be
[28:51]
able to serve with you over the last few
[28:52]
years wish I could have served with you
[28:53]
more of more of those 29 years but happy
[28:56]
for the two you've done such great work
[28:57]
for new work uh council member coyazo I
[29:01]
started working with you when I was uh
[29:03]
before I was on the council when I was a
[29:04]
field representative for the local State
[29:06]
Assembly member and it was it's always
[29:08]
been terrific working with you in that
[29:10]
role and it was uh so great working with
[29:12]
you in this role too and you've just
[29:14]
done so much for New York and I know
[29:15]
you're going to continue uh to do so
[29:17]
much for New York and as a reminder
[29:19]
again we're gonna say it a lot tonight
[29:20]
but shop
[29:21]
nework council member alaka you know
[29:24]
we've done a lot of big things over the
[29:26]
last six months and it's been just
[29:28]
really great to have you at uh the desk
[29:31]
you know bringing your perspective and
[29:32]
insights and you know especially some of
[29:34]
the things that we've done over the last
[29:35]
six months your fingerprints are going
[29:37]
to be on and it's going to you know
[29:38]
those projects are going to be better
[29:39]
because of it so I I really thank you
[29:41]
for uh stepping up to kind of serve
[29:43]
under a kind of weird circumstances you
[29:45]
know just six months but you've done so
[29:47]
much there and uh provided so much it's
[29:49]
going to benefit New York for years to
[29:51]
come so thank
[29:53]
you thank you council member jorgens
[29:55]
council member aaka
[30:06]
there we go thanks you think i' have it
[30:08]
figured out by now um I never imagined I
[30:11]
would be back on the dis these past few
[30:14]
months have truly been a gift thank you
[30:16]
to Mayor and the council for giving me
[30:18]
this opportunity to serve my community
[30:20]
once again I'm proud to be newark's only
[30:23]
recycled council member quazo and freedus it was
[30:30]
my pleasure to serve nearly 10 years

[30:37]

[30:40]
sacrificed as you dedicated your time to
[30:43]

[30:45]
there is life after counsil and I hope
[30:48]
you enjoy this next phase knowing your
[30:50]
contributions to our community have left
[30:52]

York and
[30:56]
Beyond to our new uh City Council
[30:59]
Members I am so excited for you and want
[31:01]
to share a bit of advice remember to
[31:04]
remain open to new ideas embrace our
[31:07]
history and those who came before you
[31:10]
ask questions but remember campaigns can
[31:13]
be personal and Petty but now the
[31:15]
campaign is over it is time to lead and
[31:19]
I ask those that will be taking their
[31:20]
oath tonight to truly hold on to the
[31:22]
words of that oath we the citizens of
[31:25]
New York expect and deserve our leaders
[31:27]
to serve all residents of our city no
[31:30]
matter whom they voted for and to lead
[31:32]
without bringing pettiness or
[31:34]
retributions into these Chambers never
[31:36]
take anything personally and it's
[31:38]
critical that you learn how to disagree
[31:41]
civil council members elect you have a
[31:44]
wonderful staff their experience and
[31:47]

[31:54]
newark's small and Incredibly dedicated
[31:57]

[32:00]
best resources and I hope as you bring
[32:02]
your new ideas and philosophy you treat
[32:05]
them with the professionalism they
[32:08]
deserve as I return to Life as a regular
[32:11]
citizen I will do my civic duty and
[32:14]

the quality of life in our community has
[39:01]
been enhanced throughout the efforts of
[39:03]
our senior center planic

commission and every other department
[39:08]
within the
[39:10]
city I have been blessed to work with
[39:14]
mayor David
[39:15]
Smith then mayor Alan naggie and now
[39:20]
honorable Mayor Mike
[39:23]
Hannah each mayor while different in
[39:26]
many ways also kept the best for New Y
[39:29]
has their highest
[39:32]
priorities it has been wonderful to work
[39:35]
with my counterparts on the city
[39:37]
council you have each brought your
[39:41]
perspective and personalities to the
[39:43]
office but with the highest priority
[39:45]
being on the wellbeing of our
[39:48]
community I'm not done it's seven pages
[39:50]
to go
[39:56]
so mayor mik can and elected
[39:59]
congratulations on your
[40:03]
re-election even though not been
[40:05]
recognized by the bayeri newspaper group
[40:09]
or endorsed by but you are the mayor of
[40:12]
the Grassroots campaigning definitely
[40:14]
you did on campaign on the extra M
[40:17]
walking if you will and I noticed that
[40:19]
many many times along what's the name of
[40:21]
your do Rosie Rosie along with Rosie
[40:28]
cus to the first lady of New York Miss
[40:32]
Kat Hannon Arland
[40:34]
[Applause]
[40:37]
assembly of a great job as a campaign
[40:40]
manager but I used to call her the first
[40:43]
lady of New York but tonight I was
[40:45]
pushed to the side and I have to name
[40:47]
the first lady of New York the the queen
[40:50]
of s Edward Catholic School library
[40:53]
that's the new name for how many years
[40:56]
more than 29 years correct yes so you
[40:59]
beat me there
[41:01]
too Miss sus kayaso a great friend we
[41:05]
called each other commod and comp do you
[41:07]
remember that we agreed 13 years
[41:12]

[41:15]
for us on the first campaign you have
[41:18]
been a true friend I knew you from the
[41:21]
first campaign you've been a true friend
[41:23]

[41:25]
I wish you a very good retire and
[41:29]

[41:37]
you Miss Anna podok I can retire alert
[41:40]
tonight as a recycle Council
[41:43]
women well it is that's what it is so
[41:47]
and thank you for every for we about
[41:50]
three months
[41:51]
ago we was when Council seat became
[41:55]
vacant and we the council along with the
[41:58]
city manager we posted
[42:02]
uh a vacancy and was 10
[42:06]
applicants and without doubt you were
[42:10]
selected to fill a very successful an
[42:14]
unanimously vote to fill so thank you
[42:16]
for your second time as the city council
[42:18]
and and I love
[42:21]
you thank you for you've been great
[42:23]
friends
[42:25]
[Applause]
[42:29]
council member
[42:30]
Jurgens so you've been on this Council
[42:32]
for two
[42:33]
years took me 10 years to be a rookie
[42:36]
council
[42:39]
member and tonight you're jumping from
[42:41]
Rookie council member to a senority a
[42:43]
senority council member how's
[42:47]
that goes along with uh my good
[42:52]
colleague C member mayor verter from
[42:55]
Union City we we are very Diversified
[42:58]
conso 322 so you went to the conso five
[43:01]
men oh much as it's too bad to be on the
[43:03]
Cil we are very divers we are a very
[43:05]
Diversified counil but J thank you for
[43:09]
your for and you have a very bright
[43:11]
political future on the city of New
[43:13]
World looking
[43:16]
forward Eve Marie
[43:18]
little Eve Mar oh my
[43:22]
gosh you are the ones
[43:29]
your ballot when I read your ballot
[43:31]
first when you came out and you stayed
[43:33]
at the University Professor that catch
[43:36]
my
[43:40]
eye and when you came into you went
[43:43]
those applicants coming forward the
[43:44]
filling the the temporary council member
[43:47]
and when you coming forward we the city
[43:51]
manager along with the council we
[43:52]
prepared the handout with 10 qu eight
[43:54]
questions to to hand out to the the
[43:58]
prospect
[44:00]
applicants I guess you are number five
[44:02]
or number six on the list whoever was uh
[44:05]
and you didn't give a a chance to the
[44:07]
councel to read the questions you blah blah you read the questions and you
[44:10]
answer the questions
[44:12]
so you made my day on that day
[44:16]
so right you remember that
[44:25]
yes you along went remember aoka applied
[44:28]
for but we didn't select you because I
[44:30]
guess we didn't select you because you
[44:31]
were outs spokes person but you one of
[44:34]
those questions was uh are you seeking
[44:37]
the election of the councel and we we
[44:39]
try not to give an advent to the councel
[44:42]
and that's why you selected but but we
[44:44]
picked a good recycle person to fill the
[44:49]
counil are you ready to roll up your
[44:53]
sleeves for this new are you so the best
[44:57]
to you and well deserve it
[45:00]
so Mr
[45:03]
grandal definitely you'll bring the
[45:05]
experience to this bar as an Insider
[45:09]
because you work many years on the
[45:10]
executive
[45:12]
team I am sure this new consult
[45:16]
structure will benefit
[45:19]
from and this apply to the three new
[45:22]
councils
[45:24]
uh this Council now this Cil but this
[45:28]
IIA technology on the councils it's a
[45:31]
very demanding so be prepared for for
[45:36]
long meetings long technology advanced
[45:40]
and special Mr mirand will put up to you
[45:42]
to dat so he the technology director
[45:45]
here
[45:48]
Julie so you switching from Planning
[45:50]
Commission to a council elected the best
[45:53]
to
[45:55]
you a person uh a persistent
[46:00]
candidate race decided by three votes
[46:04]
you beat me lady 1995 I was by five and
[46:07]
you beat by three so the the the the
[46:11]
margin gets Slimmer and
[46:13]
Slimmer I believe you are very strong
[46:16]
and positive ballot statement a very
[46:18]
support family campaign
[46:24]
atmosphere I want to wish you the best
[46:27]
of the best is a council elected Julie
[46:38]
Del so tonight I'm sing to my funel good
[46:41]
boy Obrigado but like council member uh
[46:45]
kayas said few words in in Spanish I
[46:49]
want to said some words in
[46:51]
Portuguese right it's kind of boring but
[46:54]
I have to express myself a bit
[47:07]
spe
[47:33]
Mar medison
[47:36]
Marissa and McKenzie Zachary Max me and
[47:47]
Miley Blessed Be Good forever
[47:56]
[Applause]
[48:14]
I feel like I should have given all the
[48:15]
council members Miranda rights before um
[48:17]
Council vice mayor frus read his script
[48:20]
uh now we need to take a vote colleagues
[48:23]
and it needs to be a Voice vote on the
[48:26]
item before mag get a motion so moov by
[48:30]
council member quazo glad to Second the
[48:32]
Motions by vice mayor freedus we need to
[48:35]
do a Voice vote do you need to call that
[48:38]
city clerk Harrington or just simply
[48:41]
uh whatever your pleasure is all those
[48:44]
in favor say I I I there's no opposition that passes
[48:52]
unanimously resolution of the city
[48:54]
council of the city of New York
[48:54]
declaring the results of the general
[48:55]
municipal election held on November 5th
[48:59]
2024 I would like to invite council
[49:01]
member Anna opaka to join me at the
[49:24]
podium she
[49:36]
thank
[49:40]
you I would never call counc Anna
[49:43]
abadaka
[49:45]
recycled what I would say is I have her
[49:47]
on speed
[49:49]
dial should that need a rise again in
[49:51]
the
[49:52]
future before I get into the
[49:54]
accommodation that the city has prepared
[49:56]
for council member opad do I did want to
[49:58]
say a few words what a true treasure to
[50:00]
our
[50:02]
community here's a woman that has served
[50:05]
our community with such
[50:09]
distinction and we had the unfortunate
[50:11]
situation where a council member
[50:14]
resigned and we needed to fill that
[50:17]
position and I knew I wanted to fill the
[50:19]
position with somebody that would fill
[50:22]
the term until the election because I
[50:24]
felt it was important that the residents
[50:27]
of the city of New York have the
[50:28]
opportunity to choose that represent
[50:32]
representative I did not want to give
[50:34]
favor to somebody as an incumbent who
[50:38]
would only serve for a few months so I
[50:40]
called former councilor member an
[50:43]
abadaka and she immediately indicated
[50:48]
that she would be proud to serve and
[50:50]
we're a better Community when you can
[50:54]
reach out to a citizen who served D and
[50:57]
is now enjoying retirement to say would
[51:00]
you come back and help us out and
[51:03]
without hesitation she said
[51:05]
yes I promise you tonight and I think
[51:08]
it's actually written in here Mr uh
[51:10]
bonon we will not be having a closed
[51:12]
session
[51:15]
tonight it was funny to watch Anna in
[51:17]
close sessions we'd be talking about a
[51:20]
development or an issue and Anna would
[51:22]
just kind of you know scratch her head a
[51:23]
little bit like why haven't you folks
[51:26]
dealt with this yet I dealt with this 10
[51:29]
years ago and you're still dealing with
[51:31]
it today she brought a historical
[51:33]
perspective to the council that was
[51:36]
important she understood the issues she
[51:38]
understood what we were trying to strive
[51:41]
for in terms of creating a better
[51:43]
community and she embodies that every
[51:46]
day so it's with great pleasure that I
[51:50]
read this accommodation to council
[51:52]
member Anna abadaka whereas on July 8th
[51:55]
2024 an opaka was appointed to the New
[51:57]
York City Council to fill a vacancy
[51:59]
through certification of the November 5
[52:02]
2024 election results and whereas Anna
[52:04]
opaka is a lifelong New York resident
[52:07]
who previously served on the city
[52:09]
council from 2005 to
[52:12]
2014 she offered her experience
[52:14]
knowledge and time to serve the city
[52:16]
that she
[52:18]
loves whereas during onopa short and
[52:21]
impactful appointment the city council
[52:23]
adopted the Broadband master plan the
[52:25]
Tri City Hazard mitigation plan the
[52:28]
facil master plan the Citywide Parks
[52:31]
master plan and held six six closed
[52:38]
sessions on abadak was
[52:41]
supported also supported finding field
[52:44]
space for the nework girls softball
[52:47]
league and served as a judge for the new
[52:50]
park dog park Halloween costume
[52:55]
contest we low ourselves so
[52:58]
much to provide Community Support
[53:01]
whereas an abadaka thrives on giving
[53:04]
back to her community and has many years
[53:07]
of involvement with the Hispanic
[53:08]
Community Affairs Council the shapo
[53:11]
pente program save aan zando and the
[53:15]
Newark graffiti abatement
[53:18]
team we'll see you in a few weeks
[53:21]
whereas Anna abadaka has made many
[53:23]
accomplishments during her elected and
[53:25]
appointed career and has made
[53:27]
significant contributions to the newerk
[53:28]
community and has consistently
[53:30]
demonstrated a tireless work ethic a
[53:33]
passion for public service and a deep
[53:35]
commitment to enhancing the quality of
[53:37]
life for all those she has served now
[53:40]
therefore we the city council members
[53:43]
for the City of New York do hereby
[53:45]
commend Anna abadaka for serving her for
[53:49]
offering her service as an interim
[53:50]
council member her dedication and
[53:52]
tireless service to the newer Community
[53:55]
it witness therefore before we have set
[53:57]
our hands and signatures on this uh
[54:00]
accomodation and I'd like to present it
[54:01]

[54:44]
most they sent out the bat signal for
[54:46]
you but I really want to really commend
[54:48]
you for your kindness when I was still
[54:50]
trying to navigate and figure out nework

[55:01]
stabilizing force and I really want to
[55:03]

[57:13]
other government um Partners we have in
[57:16]
the
[57:17]

[57:28]
of your extraordinary 9 years of
[57:30]
dedicated service to the city of Newark

others to lead with the same dedication
[58:05]

[58:10]
supervisor Elisa
[58:12]
[Applause]
[58:22]
Marquez she broke it we broke it
[58:26]
no we didn't break it I broke it let's
[58:29]
be clear about that ladies and Gentlemen
[58:31]
let's hear it for council member Anna
[58:33]
[Applause]
[58:41]
opaka city manager bonon
[59:02]
[Applause]
[59:10]
[Music]
[59:21]
sorry mayor Hannon presents oh city
[59:25]
manager City manager bonon
[59:31]
flag thank you Council
[59:33]
badaka next I'd like to invite council
[59:37]
member Susie coyazo to join
[59:41]
[Applause]
[59:54]
me almost feels like were the Oakland A
[59:56]
selling our star athletes to the
[59:59]
Yankees sorry it's the way it
[1:00:03]
is what I think of Susie
[1:00:06]
Kazo first of all we were so proud to be
[1:00:08]
able to have the first state of the city
[1:00:11]
address outd doors in historic old town
[1:00:15]
and that really came as uh impetus from
[1:00:18]
Council M Kazo that we need to recognize
[1:00:22]
the value of that part of our community
[1:00:25]
and nobody exemplifies leadership in
[1:00:28]
that Community better than Anna
[1:00:34]
[Applause]
[1:00:41]
abadaka we
[1:00:46]
not you know when you're
[1:00:49]
Irish and you make a mistake you
[1:00:52]
acknowledge
[1:00:53]
it and move on
[1:00:57]
and blame the city
[1:00:59]
manager it does say
[1:01:02]
Anna thank
[1:01:07]
you who wrote it see this is what
[1:01:09]
happens when you don't prepare a script
[1:01:11]
because I I don't like to prepare a
[1:01:14]
script when I'm talking about the
[1:01:16]
contributions of a real friend to our
[1:01:20]
community because I want my comments to
[1:01:22]
be heartfelt I don't want them to be
[1:01:24]
rehearsed and when I think of you I
[1:01:27]
think of the heart of Newark you are the
[1:01:29]
heart of Newark we beat around you you
[1:01:33]
know um when she gets teary eyed up here
[1:01:37]
at the council talking about her service
[1:01:39]
it's because she has a great love for
[1:01:40]
our community it's like I'm leaving my
[1:01:42]
family because we are all part of her
[1:01:45]
family and we're now saying she's saying
[1:01:48]
goodbye to us she won't be far away if
[1:01:50]
she mentioned but it's not the same she
[1:01:53]
was involved in real critical decisions
[1:01:57]
for our community when it comes to
[1:01:59]
affordable housing when it comes to how
[1:02:01]
do we reduce crime in our community she
[1:02:04]
was there at the Forefront with ideas
[1:02:06]
and suggestions on how to make new Yark
[1:02:08]
A Better Community for all of our
[1:02:11]
residents the fact that she has a great
[1:02:13]
restaurant that serves great food is
[1:02:14]
just simply a side
[1:02:17]
benefit so it's a great honor for me uh
[1:02:22]
to recognize Susie coyazo she told me
[1:02:26]
early on when I was a younger council
[1:02:28]
member council member Hannah you're my
[1:02:31]
assistant what I need you deliver and
[1:02:34]
even when you're when you become the
[1:02:36]
mayor you're still my assistant don't
[1:02:38]
forget
[1:02:40]
it that's the kind of respect that she
[1:02:43]
deserves whereas Maria Susie Kazo was
[1:02:47]
first elected to the New York City
[1:02:48]
Council on November the E8 2011 and
[1:02:51]
reelected in 2016 and 2020 she served as
[1:02:55]
Vice mayor in 2015 2019 and
[1:02:58]
2023 whereas in her capacity as a
[1:03:01]
council member and vice mayor Maria
[1:03:02]
Susie Kazo served on the Alam County
[1:03:04]
Fire advisory commission the Alam County
[1:03:07]
Library advisory commission the Alam
[1:03:09]
County Transportation Commission and the
[1:03:12]
New York City Council New York Board of
[1:03:14]
Education liaison committee whereas
[1:03:16]
under Maria Susi Coo's leadership the
[1:03:19]
city council approved new affordable
[1:03:22]
housing all weather soccer fields a
[1:03:24]
skateboard park new Bark Park the city's
[1:03:28]
first dog park new hotels a new Civic
[1:03:32]
Center including the police department
[1:03:34]
and the Allen L Nagi library and the
[1:03:37]
David W Smith City Hall did you ever
[1:03:41]
tell mayor Nagi that it was only on a
[1:03:42]
three to2 vote that we actually approved
[1:03:44]
the
[1:03:48]
L I'm not
[1:03:51]
done whereas Marie Susie coyazo has also
[1:03:54]
organized and close to the Mariachi
[1:03:57]
Festival as part of the groovin at the
[1:03:59]
Grove summer concert series and the dia
[1:04:02]
de la maros Festival which this
[1:04:06]
year we closed off part of foron Avenue
[1:04:10]
again at the request of council M coyazo
[1:04:13]
because it has become such a significant
[1:04:15]
event attended by hundreds and hundreds
[1:04:18]
of people that had deserved that type of
[1:04:21]
response from the city so thank you city
[1:04:24]
manager bonon and City staff for making
[1:04:26]
that happen you requested it and it got
[1:04:29]
done can we mention we had about 3,000
[1:04:32]
people at the miachi festival and about
[1:04:34]
2,000 at the the other muos this year
[1:04:37]
yes
[1:04:38]
[Applause]
[1:04:40]
[Music]
[1:04:43]
yes and the fact that they were all
[1:04:44]
shopping in new Yark was just a side
[1:04:48]
benefit whereas Maria Susie Kazu is a
[1:04:51]
founding member of anando and a proud
[1:04:54]
member of the New York Rotary Club
[1:04:56]
past president twice and I just want to
[1:04:59]
mention avanzando for those of you that
[1:05:01]
don't know it and if I misstate anything
[1:05:02]
please correct me it's an organization
[1:05:05]
that really gives back to the community
[1:05:07]
to Young students that are seeking
[1:05:11]
higher education and maybe just don't
[1:05:12]
have the financial means to be able to
[1:05:15]
accomplish their goals aan zando
[1:05:19]
historically has provided scholarships
[1:05:21]
to needy students in our community and
[1:05:24]
Susie coyazo was a founding member of
[1:05:27]
that organization so thank you for that
[1:05:30]
whereas Maria Susie coyazo is committed
[1:05:32]
to maintaining the highest quality of
[1:05:34]
life for all residents of the city and
[1:05:36]
devoted uncommon time talent and energy
[1:05:41]
to this end she has earned the respect
[1:05:43]
of her colleagues City staff and
[1:05:45]
residents now therefore we the city
[1:05:47]
council members for the City of New York
[1:05:49]
do hereby commend Maria Susie coyazo on
[1:05:52]
her retirement from elected service we
[1:05:54]
thank you for your dedic ation and
[1:05:56]
tireless service to the nework community
[1:05:58]
and her advocacy for local businesses by
[1:06:01]
encouraging everyone to shop Newark at
[1:06:04]
City Council meetings so it's with great
[1:06:05]
pleasure that I present to you this uh
[1:06:11]
[Applause]
[1:06:22]
accommodation I would like to invite
[1:06:25]
assembly member Alex Lee to return
[1:06:26]
please thank
[1:06:32]
you thank you so of course it is my
[1:06:35]
great honor to provide to you a assembly
[1:06:37]
resolution for your years of service to
[1:06:39]
the city of New York but uh Council M
[1:06:42]
Kazo I really don't think there's anyone
[1:06:43]
else that can claim to have shed as many
[1:06:45]
Blood Sweat and Tears literally for this
[1:06:47]
community and definitely the community
[1:06:49]
has always been with you in all your
[1:06:51]
endeavors and but I really want to
[1:06:53]
stress how important it is that you've
[1:06:54]
always been uplifting every member of
[1:06:56]
the New York Community but especially
[1:06:57]
spotlighting the Latino community and
[1:07:00]
especially Latina leaders and you were
[1:07:02]
the first person to join with me to have
[1:07:04]
our first annual ever at that point uh
[1:07:06]
Latino Heritage Month Awards and really
[1:07:09]
uh even had it right in front of the
[1:07:10]
tortilla factory and really seeing how
[1:07:12]
much you have grown to a spot like this
[1:07:13]
community because we want to make sure
[1:07:15]
that even as communities change and
[1:07:17]
people come from across the world to
[1:07:18]
live in this great community that we
[1:07:20]
continue to recognize the history and
[1:07:22]
the Heritage that the Latino Community
[1:07:24]
has represented and so so I um this is a
[1:07:27]
gift that is a small token for the
[1:07:29]
incredible incredible advocacy you have
[1:07:31]
for the entire community and I wish you
[1:07:33]
best of luck out there uh without having
[1:07:35]
to spend your Thursday nights out here
[1:07:36]
but we will always be there to help you
[1:07:37]
when you need it as well thank you
[1:07:39]
congratulations
[1:07:41]
[Applause]
[1:07:56]

[1:12:27]
2014 and uh he's TR thank
[1:12:33]
you he's a he's a gentleman if there's
[1:12:36]
no other way to characterize leis fredes
[1:12:38]
he's a gentleman and an honorable person
[1:12:41]
in our
[1:12:43]
community he takes this responsibility
[1:12:46]
so
[1:12:47]
seriously he does his homework he talks
[1:12:51]
to staff he understands the
[1:12:53]
issues and he knows what the Newark way
[1:12:57]
looks like because in his 29 years he's
[1:13:02]
exemplified the new Yark way every
[1:13:09]
day he served proudly for many years
[1:13:11]
with mayor
[1:13:13]
alegi they were like uh ying and
[1:13:17]
yang Mutt and Jeff I mean there's all
[1:13:19]
sorts of analogies I could come up with
[1:13:21]
to describe their
[1:13:22]
relationship at some point uh they they
[1:13:25]
were just always on the same
[1:13:27]
page council member fedus knew exactly
[1:13:29]
what mayor Nei was thinking and vice
[1:13:31]
versa and we accomplished so much good
[1:13:35]
for this community I mean I just think
[1:13:37]
of this beautiful city hall that we're
[1:13:38]
sitting in for those of you that don't
[1:13:40]
for remember the old city hall which oh
[1:13:44]
the way mayor did not have restrooms on
[1:13:45]
every
[1:13:47]
floor this is such an upgrade other
[1:13:50]
cities look at the city of New York and
[1:13:52]
how do you do it how do you continue to
[1:13:54]
do what you do because we stay focused on the priorities of our
[1:13:59]
community and council member fros was
[1:14:01]
always vice mayor frus was always in
[1:14:03]
tune with that it was with great honor
[1:14:06]
that I served with him and I remember
[1:14:09]
when he called me the young council
[1:14:11]
member at the time but young in terms of
[1:14:13]
years of service did did I I'm sure
[1:14:16]
that's what you
[1:14:18]
meant so it's a great honor and really a
[1:14:22]
sad day in all honesty when you say
[1:14:24]
goodbye to folks that have served your
[1:14:25]
community for 50 years it's really a
[1:14:27]
it's a joyous day but it's also a sad
[1:14:29]
day because you recognize that their
[1:14:31]
contributions to your city from a city
[1:14:34]
council perspective are coming to a
[1:14:37]
conclusion so it's with great pride that
[1:14:39]
I read that whereas Lewis fratus was
[1:14:43]
first elected to the city council in
[1:14:47]
1995 and was
[1:14:52]
reelected six consecutive terms do I
[1:14:54]
need to reach everyone one of these
[1:14:55]
terms I need to reach every one of
[1:14:57]
these serving a total of 29 years as a
[1:15:00]
council member he served as vice mayor
[1:15:01]
in 1998
[1:15:03]
2002 2006 2007 2011 well we couldn't
[1:15:09]
find anybody
[1:15:12]
else 2015 2020 and
[1:15:17]
2024 where whereas in His official
[1:15:20]
capacity as the council member and vice
[1:15:21]
mayor Lewis Freda served as a New York
[1:15:24]
representative on the Aly County
[1:15:25]
Transportation Commission AC Transit
[1:15:28]
policy advisory committee the congested
[1:15:31]
management agency the Alam County Waste
[1:15:33]
Management Authority board stop waste
[1:15:36]
and the Community Development advisory
[1:15:37]
committee whereas Lewis freedus has had
[1:15:41]
so many accomplishments during his
[1:15:42]
elected career that it would be
[1:15:43]
impossible to list them all recent
[1:15:46]
accomp accomplishments under his
[1:15:48]
leadership include new affordable
[1:15:51]
housing all- weather turf soccer fields
[1:15:53]

[1:15:56]
city's first dog park new hotels and a
[1:15:59]
new Civic Center including the police
[1:16:02]
department Allen L Nagi library and
[1:16:04]
David W Smith City Hall whereas Lewis
[1:16:08]
freedus Community involvement includes L
[1:16:11]
Uso American fraternal Federation
[1:16:15]
pfsa Supreme Council New York Optimus
[1:16:18]

[1:16:21]
Portuguese American Leadership Council
[1:16:23]
of the United States and the newerk
[1:16:26]
Portuguese soccer club whereas Lewis
[1:16:28]
alfredus is committed to maintaining the
[1:16:30]
highest quality of life for all
[1:16:32]
residents of the city and devoted
[1:16:34]
uncommon time talent and energy to this
[1:16:37]
end he has earned the respect of his
[1:16:39]
colleagues on and City staff and all
[1:16:41]
residents now therefore we the city
[1:16:43]
council members for the City of New York
[1:16:45]
hereby recognize and commend Lewis
[1:16:48]
freedus on his retirement from elected service and thank him for
[1:16:52]
his dedication and tireless service to
[1:16:54]

[1:16:58]
to tackle complex issues has made him a
[1:17:01]

[1:17:03]
direction of the city of Newark so vice
[1:17:06]

[1:17:49]
for your 29 years of outstanding service
[1:17:51]
you've served exactly amount of years

cherish I just want you to know that
[1:18:07]
everyone was able to fit in this city
[1:18:09]
hall unlike a different city hall I
[1:18:10]

[1:18:12]
so you have should be very proud of that

and vice mayor frus before you leave yes
[1:22:17]
sir ladies and Gentlemen please know
[1:22:19]
that the residents of our great city of
[1:22:21]
Newark are thankful for vice mayor frus
[1:22:25]
is 29 years of dedicated service to our
[1:22:29]
community it has been common practice to
[1:22:32]
recognize our Civic leaders for
[1:22:34]
extensive service to our community
[1:22:36]
examples include former council member
[1:22:39]
Shirley cisk who served on our city
[1:22:42]
council for 21 years we named our
[1:22:45]
Eucalyptus Grove on Cedar Boulevard The
[1:22:48]
sherly cisk Grove former council member
[1:22:51]
Susan Johnson who served on our city
[1:22:54]
council so for 22 years we named the
[1:22:57]
park on Spruce Street the Susan Johnson
[1:23:00]
bridg Point Park and of course let's not
[1:23:03]
forget our library is named after former
[1:23:06]
mayor Allan L Nagi for his 42 years of
[1:23:10]
service and former mayor David Smith who
[1:23:14]
by the way wanted to be here tonight
[1:23:16]
mayor Smith lives in Livermore he was
[1:23:19]
worried about the traffic and the
[1:23:20]
weather but he certainly told me that he
[1:23:24]
wanted to be here to commend you for
[1:23:26]
your years of service but we named this
[1:23:29]
beautiful Civic Center after mayor Smith
[1:23:32]
for his 35 years of service of which 33
[1:23:36]
years were mayor of the city of Newark
[1:23:39]
therefore we are proceeding with a
[1:23:40]
significant Capital project that I will
[1:23:43]
ask my Council colleagues to name after
[1:23:46]
vice mayor freedus unfortunately we
[1:23:48]
don't have a timetable when the
[1:23:50]
groundbreaking will occur and it is a
[1:23:53]
complex project
[1:23:55]
but more important but more information
[1:23:57]
will follow at this point I'm not going
[1:23:59]
to name the project until we get closer
[1:24:01]
to the groundbreaking but please know
[1:24:03]
that there's a significant Capital
[1:24:05]
project that will be named after you in
[1:24:07]
the near future and I look forward to
[1:24:09]
that day

[1:36:02]
member Eve Marie little thank
[1:36:06]
you thank you so much
[1:36:09]
um I have never in my life ever said
[1:36:11]
this before but I'm actually a little
[1:36:13]
nervous this is new for me um so I just
[1:36:16]
want to start off by saying thank you for believing in me thank you
[1:36:21]
for trusting me thank you for absolutely
[1:36:23]
everything it's so incredibly crazy to
[1:36:26]
me that I was a little girl little huh
[1:36:30]
get it little little girl um from a
[1:36:32]
little town in West Texas and to be
[1:36:36]
where I am today is just mind-blowing to
[1:36:38]
me and
[1:36:40]
uh I just I'm baffled for words and it's
[1:36:44]
not going to happen much so write it
[1:36:45]
down um but most of all ever since I was
[1:36:49]
a little
[1:36:50]
girl everyone used to always say they
[1:36:52]
wanted to have these careers and they
[1:36:53]
want all these be things and and my
[1:36:55]
brother and my sister are huge career
[1:36:57]
people Engineers doing incredible things
[1:36:58]
and my dad would always say what do you
[1:37:00]
want to be when you grow up and I said I
[1:37:03]
want to help people and he goes honey
[1:37:05]
that don't pay nothing honey you got to
[1:37:07]
find a career you know and I have always
[1:37:10]
had a passion for helping others and I
[1:37:13]
didn't know what it was I didn't know
[1:37:14]
what I wanted to do and uh when I went
[1:37:17]
off to Texas S&M University I didn't
[1:37:19]
know what I wanted it to be but I knew I
[1:37:21]
liked International stuff you know so I
[1:37:23]
majored in international studies and
[1:37:26]
cultureal anthropology with a minor in
[1:37:30]
Spanish I see it's one or more classes
[1:37:33]
it's no big deal and it was until I got
[1:37:35]
the opportunity to go work in Machu
[1:37:37]
Picchu Peru that I was working at a
[1:37:40]
hotel there that I found my passion for
[1:37:41]
Hospitality my passion for helping
[1:37:43]
people through providing services and
[1:37:45]
through providing kindness towards
[1:37:47]
others and that's where I fell in love
[1:37:48]
with it so I enjoyed it graduated
[1:37:50]
college and then someone came into our
[1:37:53]
school class and I had no idea what I
[1:37:54]
was going to do I was getting a career
[1:37:56]
had no idea and someone said hey there's
[1:37:58]
an internship opportunity at a school
[1:38:00]
called Tang de hako and onang South
[1:38:03]
Korea I said all right let's do it so I
[1:38:06]
applied for it and I got accepted to
[1:38:08]
South Korea and it was so funny because
[1:38:10]
all my friends were going Eve you're
[1:38:11]
going to Asia and I'm like yeah and they
[1:38:13]
go do you speak Korean no all right and
[1:38:15]
it wasn't until I was actually on the
[1:38:17]
plane when they
[1:38:20]
said oh snap it got real you know and I
[1:38:24]
was learning quickly but the thing was I
[1:38:26]
learned about the Asian culture and I
[1:38:28]
learned about that and I learned more
[1:38:29]
and more and I had a passion for wanting
[1:38:31]
to learn more and I was a teacher at
[1:38:33]
that school and I learned Korean I learn
[1:38:35]
Korean because if you're hungry enough
[1:38:37]
you'll learn a language you know and I
[1:38:39]
made the effort to care and then I moved
[1:38:41]
back to United States and I realized you
[1:38:42]
know what hospitality is really where I
[1:38:44]
am but I also like
[1:38:45]
teaching so I fell in love with that and
[1:38:47]
then I got when I lived in Houston I
[1:38:49]
started working for the African
[1:38:51]
Consulate of Ghana and I I worked for
[1:38:53]
the Gan consulate and I would get a lot
[1:38:56]
of man you you don't look African and I
[1:38:59]
was like it's okay you can talk to me
[1:39:00]
it's fine you can tell me but I got to
[1:39:02]
learn more about that culture as well
[1:39:04]
and that was important to me and then I
[1:39:06]
learned about the Chinese culture and
[1:39:09]
the Asian culture when I worked as a
[1:39:10]
dragon boat racer why am I sharing all
[1:39:13]
this to you why am I telling you all
[1:39:15]
this it's because I care and I care
[1:39:17]
about different cultures and I care
[1:39:18]
about different backgrounds and that's
[1:39:20]
the reason I care a lot so one of the
[1:39:22]
big things here in the Community is I am
[1:39:24]
a leader in scouting and I'm very
[1:39:26]
involved with it and I'm very thankful
[1:39:28]
for everybody here but one thing I did
[1:39:29]
was I took a lot of things in scouting
[1:39:31]
and I grabbed it and took it on and
[1:39:32]
that's what I've been told a lot is I
[1:39:33]
just take things on and I go a thousand
[1:39:35]
miles an hour and that's part of the
[1:39:37]
things I want to do with our city I
[1:39:38]
really want to do big changes here and I
[1:39:41]
also want all people from all
[1:39:43]
backgrounds from all cultures to feel
[1:39:45]
comfortable and talk to me this is
[1:39:47]
important to me and Susie has left great
[1:39:50]
things of getting involved and getting
[1:39:51]
and doing things and that's important to
[1:39:53]
me that I can be there to represent it's
[1:39:55]
important to me and Louis I just wanted
[1:39:57]
to thank you so much for your kindness
[1:40:00]
thank you for your leadership to me
[1:40:02]
thank you for being so sweet and when
[1:40:04]
you and I spoke and you just said eve
[1:40:05]
you're exactly what the city needs and
[1:40:07]
then he told me in 29 years I have never
[1:40:09]
endorsed a candidate and after me and
[1:40:11]
your energy and your spunk I would like
[1:40:13]
to endorse you and that and I said thank
[1:40:17]
you so much what is endorsing me
[1:40:20]
so this was a opportunity for me and
[1:40:23]
thank you you Maran thank you also for
[1:40:24]
your kindness as well thank you for your
[1:40:26]
kind words Susie thank you for your
[1:40:27]
conversation and thank you for the kind
[1:40:29]
words that you said to me but most of
[1:40:31]
all I want to thank Mayor Mike Hannon I
[1:40:34]
came up to him because someone attempted
[1:40:36]
to break into our Scout our boy scout
[1:40:38]
shed Mike Marano knows what I'm talking
[1:40:40]
about we've had a lot of problems with
[1:40:41]
it and I was angry and I was said he
[1:40:42]
said what are you g to do about it and I
[1:40:44]
said I don't know but I'm angry and he
[1:40:46]
goes why aren you run for city council I
[1:40:47]
was like you know what I will and he
[1:40:50]
said good and then I turned in my
[1:40:52]
paperwork to she said oh my gosh I'm
[1:40:54]
running for city council but I did put
[1:40:57]
my heart into it I did listen to people
[1:40:59]
I walked 89.4 eight steps I'm 89.4 miles
[1:41:05]
429,000 steps half almost half a million
[1:41:08]
steps I lost 17 pounds I've gained six
[1:41:11]
so far just in FYI thank you but I also
[1:41:14]
want to say a huge thank you to our
[1:41:16]
former Alan eggy thank you so much he
[1:41:18]
sees what I do for scouting for food he
[1:41:20]
sees what I do in The Scouting community
[1:41:22]
and he said Eve I know you're not a
[1:41:23]
talker you're not going to be walking
[1:41:25]
around shaking hands and kissing babies
[1:41:27]
you're actually going to be on the
[1:41:28]
boot's work because he knows what I do
[1:41:30]
and he held my hand through my campaign
[1:41:33]
he helped answer questions for me I
[1:41:35]
would take screenshots of where I would
[1:41:37]
walk and I'd say hey check this out and
[1:41:39]
he goes walk more you so I want to thank
[1:41:42]
you for that very much and of course
[1:41:44]
he's not here today but Mr Dave Smith
[1:41:46]
also thank you for the conversation that
[1:41:48]
I had with him he had great things for
[1:41:49]
us but most of all as someone who works
[1:41:52]
in the hospitality as industry as
[1:41:53]
someone who works in the education
[1:41:55]
industry the biggest people here at the
[1:41:57]
end of day is the staff I want to thank
[1:41:59]
all of the staff members with our city
[1:42:01]
thank you for what you guys do behind
[1:42:02]
the scenes especially to Miss Sheila
[1:42:05]
thank you for what you do you held my
[1:42:07]
hand through all my yes all my election
[1:42:09]
stuff thank you so
[1:42:12]
much and I know everyone's tired and I
[1:42:15]
know everyone's hungry so I will just
[1:42:16]
share one thing with you guys before I
[1:42:18]
finish I hope I I did everything right I
[1:42:21]
hope I don't have a script I never have
[1:42:22]
a script just YOLO um but I do want to
[1:42:26]
let you guys know one time a friend of
[1:42:27]
mine said to me Eve you know the thing
[1:42:30]
about you is Eve you're not a you're not
[1:42:32]
a soda shaken three times you're more
[1:42:35]
like a bottle of champagne after a
[1:42:37]
hurricane and I was like and so I would
[1:42:39]
like you guys just take that hurricane
[1:42:42]
take that drink and cheers to the future
[1:42:44]
of our city thank you so much
[1:42:54]
I couldn't help but notice though when
[1:42:56]
you said Texas A&M University I didn't
[1:42:58]
hear go Aggies did I Mr
[1:43:02]
Bon council member Julie
[1:43:07]
Delano thank you
[1:43:12]
perfect is the green light
[1:43:15]
on you're on okay there we
[1:43:20]
are is your heart in the right place
[1:43:24]
those were actually the very words that
[1:43:26]
vice mayor lisis fredes had just come up
[1:43:30]
to me Louise said is it in the right
[1:43:33]
place and he stared at me and he said is
[1:43:35]
it is it right when I walked into the
[1:43:38]
building and so I just want to say yes
[1:43:41]
it is because my heart is with nework
[1:43:45]
and I love this community it's actually
[1:43:47]
the only community that my daughter
[1:43:49]
knows she grew up here and now she's a
[1:43:52]
senior in high school and her friends
[1:43:55]
are also here with her and their
[1:43:57]
families as well I know that there was a
[1:43:59]
lot of people that came up when I taking
[1:44:01]
my oath but many of us go way back and
[1:44:05]
when I say that I mean into childhood I
[1:44:08]
mean into decades we also have uh
[1:44:11]
honorable Judge tamisa hawen Hall Stone
[1:44:14]
she's here too and she came up with me
[1:44:18]
um she was actually one of my teachers
[1:44:21]
in high school just for a moment while
[1:44:23]
she was going through law school as well
[1:44:26]
and she's always been an inspiration to
[1:44:28]
me and so when I decided to run I wanted
[1:44:31]
to also open up my campaign to Young
[1:44:35]
students here in Newark as well so that
[1:44:37]
way they could be part of the campaign
[1:44:39]
so that they could be part of nework so
[1:44:41]
that when they grow up and they go on to
[1:44:43]
college that they have a reason to come
[1:44:45]
back home to nework and that's exactly
[1:44:49]
where we want them we want them home and
[1:44:51]
we want everyone to be heart of nework
[1:44:54]
and I just really wanted to say thank
[1:44:55]
you to everyone and the volunteers that
[1:44:59]
have come and to help not only my
[1:45:01]
campaign but also to help Newark in
[1:45:03]
every way
[1:45:04]
possible additionally my incredible
[1:45:07]
interns and their fames jalila Gabby
[1:45:10]
Noah Isha your energy and dedication and
[1:45:14]
belief in this campaign really inspires
[1:45:16]
me daily you represent the future of
[1:45:19]
leadership in our community and I'm so
[1:45:22]
proud of what we've accomplished
[1:45:25]
together thank you to those who have
[1:45:28]
known over decades and continue to
[1:45:31]
inspire me I know we have the Mesa
[1:45:34]
family is here too the Corone family the
[1:45:38]
L the katabi katanos
[1:45:41]
cares and judge Ian riveron he also came
[1:45:45]
he was actually a peer of mine a student
[1:45:48]
a friend and eventually he became a
[1:45:51]
judge and so it's just those type of
[1:45:54]
people that you want to keep in your
[1:45:56]
lives that continue to inspire you that
[1:45:59]
continue to help you that continue to
[1:46:02]
support you and so I just want to say
[1:46:04]
thank you to everyone and this moment
[1:46:07]
actually is very significant to me
[1:46:09]
because it honors a legacy of service
[1:46:12]
that runs deep in my family my
[1:46:14]
grandparents instilled in me the values
[1:46:17]
of hard work sacrifice and giving back
[1:46:20]
on my maternal side my family
[1:46:22]
immigration ated to the United States of
[1:46:24]
America in the 1920s and my grandfather
[1:46:27]
proudly served in World War II
[1:46:29]
dedicating himself to protecting our
[1:46:32]
cherished freedoms his legacy lives on
[1:46:36]
in those that continue to fight for our
[1:46:38]
country and my maternal side my
[1:46:41]
grandmother she served at the Gideon
[1:46:43]
Masonic Home and on my paternal side my
[1:46:46]
grandparents worked for the school
[1:46:49]
district and they promoted education my
[1:46:52]
parents and my family's contributions
[1:46:54]
big and small they remind me every day
[1:46:58]
that service to others is a foundation
[1:47:01]
of a meaningful
[1:47:02]
life I know that our campaign was built
[1:47:06]
on a belief that New York was more than
[1:47:07]
a city because it really is it's a
[1:47:09]
family we're vibrant and diverse and we
[1:47:13]
com and we are a community that cares
[1:47:16]
about people from our schools to our
[1:47:18]
parks to local businesses and
[1:47:20]
neighborhood watch teams as your ccil
[1:47:23]
member I plan to work tirelessly to
[1:47:26]
improve whatever it is that we need to
[1:47:29]
enhance our city and support
[1:47:32]
everyone let me be clear though this is
[1:47:34]
only the beginning because reaching our
[1:47:37]
goals requires all of us to stay
[1:47:39]
engaged and I believe that every
[1:47:42]
resident will continue to shape new work
[1:47:46]
whether volunteering or supporting local
[1:47:48]
businesses or attending city meetings
[1:47:51]
your voice does matter
[1:47:53]
and so I just want to end with stating
[1:47:56]
that I have an incredible spouse Jeff a
[1:47:59]
wonderful daughter
[1:48:01]
jalila and my parents who instilled in
[1:48:04]
me the values that guide my work thank
[1:48:06]
you for your unwavering love and to
[1:48:09]
everyone who believed that nework was a
[1:48:12]
place to call home I just want to say
[1:48:14]
thank you and we never know exactly who
[1:48:17]
those last three voters were but I want
[1:48:19]
to say thank you thank you to them
[1:48:24]
[Applause]
[1:48:33]
yay council member in
[1:48:40]
grindall yep
[1:48:42]
on so first of all I want to thank um
[1:48:45]
council member kaaso and congratulate
[1:48:47]
you for um all the all the things all
[1:48:50]
the help you've provided me over the
[1:48:51]
years and I wish you the best in in your
[1:48:55]
retirement um also want to I want to
[1:48:57]
express the same to council member frus
[1:49:00]

[1:49:04]
working with you and I wish you the best
[1:49:06]
in your retirement and of course Anna um
[1:49:09]
it's it's been a pleasure to work with
[1:49:10]
you and I I I'm going to take you up on
[1:49:13]
the offer to um provide advice in the
[1:49:15]
future you can count on it um so um New
[1:49:19]
York residents um I'm deeply honored and
[1:49:22]
excited to embark on this journey today
[1:49:24]
marks the beginning of a new chapter one
[1:49:26]
where we work together to strengthen our
[1:49:28]
community address challenges and build
[1:49:30]
the future we can all be proud of first
[1:49:33]
I want to express my sincere gratitude
[1:49:35]
to the voters of Newark for placing your
[1:49:37]
trust and confidence in me I'm here
[1:49:40]
because of you and I promise to give you
[1:49:42]
my very best every
[1:49:43]
day a special thank you to my family
[1:49:46]
Annabelle Alita Travers and winwin um
[1:49:51]
you are um your your unwavering support
[1:49:54]
and encouragement have been my backbone
[1:49:56]
throughout this challenge your love and
[1:49:58]
strength have made it all have made all
[1:49:59]
the difference I'm also profound
[1:50:02]
profoundly grateful to the many
[1:50:03]
Community leaders who stood with me
[1:50:05]
especially my friend and Mentor uh mayor
[1:50:08]
Emeritus David W Smith for whom this
[1:50:10]
very building is named U mayor Smith's
[1:50:12]
endorsement guidance and mentorship has
[1:50:14]
been invaluable to me his legacy of
[1:50:16]
service and commitment to nework
[1:50:18]
continues to
[1:50:20]
inspire um as many of you know I had the
[1:50:22]
opportunity of knocking on thousands of
[1:50:24]
doors during this campaign it was
[1:50:26]
daunting but it was also one of the most
[1:50:28]
rewarding experiences of my life
[1:50:31]
directly engaging with New York
[1:50:33]
residents and hearing the your stories
[1:50:35]
and concerns reaffirmed my commitment to
[1:50:37]
this
[1:50:39]
community I want to continue that
[1:50:41]
dialogue in the years ahead that's why
[1:50:43]
every month I'll be hosting a a coffee
[1:50:45]
with a council member a chance for
[1:50:47]
anyone in our community to sit down with
[1:50:49]
me share your thoughts and discuss how
[1:50:51]
we can make nework even better you can
[1:50:54]
also just call me or send me an email
[1:50:56]
but um I I want to make that I want to
[1:50:58]
open the door to that the the the first coffee will be at on January
[1:51:02]
11th at 2 p.m. at the Oldtown Starbucks
[1:51:05]
all announced details each month from
[1:51:07]
this dis and on my website which is
[1:51:09]
Terren fork.org one of the highlights of
[1:51:12]
being part of this community is our
[1:51:14]
annual Newark Days parade It's a
[1:51:16]
Wonderful tradition that brings us all
[1:51:18]
together um as I as I participated in
[1:51:21]
the parade this year
[1:51:23]
um I thought about the journey that I've
[1:51:24]
taken and the road ahead after the
[1:51:26]
election it occurred to me that the
[1:51:28]
titles of the playlist I played during
[1:51:30]
the during the parade tells something of
[1:51:32]
the story for this journey um Running
[1:51:35]
Down a Dream by Tom Petty this song
[1:51:39]
captures the essence of my dream to work
[1:51:41]
hard for our community to make nework a
[1:51:42]

[1:53:32]
Council e Marie little you had a couple
[1:53:33]
folks you wanted to thank
[1:53:36]
well I might have to learn this um so I
[1:53:39]
did definitely wanted to also thank and
[1:53:41]
I I just since I don't have a written
[1:53:42]
script or anything fancy I wanted to
[1:53:44]
thank the big thing is I'm by myself
[1:53:46]
here in California but I'm very very fortunate to have my incredible
[1:53:51]
boyfriend Miss Mr Andrew Smith right
[1:53:53]
there in the back right there raise your
[1:53:55]
hand don't be
[1:53:58]
shy I want I wanted to thank him for
[1:54:01]

[1:54:03]
I want to say thank you I'm a lot of
[1:54:04]
work and I want to thank you so much for
[1:54:06]
being patient and when I told you I
[1:54:08]
wanted to R for city council you
[1:54:11]
said end quote and also I want to thank
[1:54:14]
my son it was very very difficult Austin
[1:54:17]
Alexander Rolan little the
[1:54:20]
Chavez and you can stand up Austin thank
[1:54:26]
you and I I just want to thank him I
[1:54:29]

[1:54:30]
gone for every single weekend and I want
[1:54:32]
to say thank you Austin for your
[1:54:33]
patience and thank you for everything
[1:54:37]
great what a historical
[1:54:41]
evening I'm honored that the voters of
[1:54:43]
our great city of New York have
[1:54:44]
reelected me to serve as our mayor for a
[1:54:48]
second term let me Briefly summarize my
[1:54:51]
recent experience as I walked and
[1:54:53]
knocked on over 3500 homes in our
[1:54:57]
community ensuring that I touched all
[1:55:01]
neighborhoods our residents were very
[1:55:03]
receptive and
[1:55:05]
courteous as they highlighted why they
[1:55:08]
love our city and more
[1:55:10]
specifically their
[1:55:12]
neighborhood as an elected official or
[1:55:14]
candidate seeking elected office we must
[1:55:16]
continually remind ourselves that we
[1:55:19]
serve the public that no idea from a
[1:55:22]
resident is a bad idea and that we must
[1:55:25]
take the opportunity to listen if there
[1:55:28]
are many good ideas that emanate from
[1:55:30]
our residents and just as important so
[1:55:33]
many heartwarming stories out there in
[1:55:36]
our
[1:55:37]
community residents were also very much
[1:55:40]
at ease suggesting opportunities to
[1:55:42]
enhance our city whether they were
[1:55:44]
discussing Street conditions Public
[1:55:47]
Safety or our
[1:55:49]
schools even in those few occasions
[1:55:51]
where there was disagreement on the
[1:55:54]
direction of our city the conversations
[1:55:57]
were beneficial as I had the opportunity
[1:56:00]
to appreciate and hear different
[1:56:03]
suggestions and
[1:56:05]
perspectives I'm also grateful that our
[1:56:07]
residents passed measure
[1:56:09]
LL which will PRI which will provide our
[1:56:13]
city approximately 2.3 to 2.5 million
[1:56:16]
dollar of Revenue that will allow us to
[1:56:19]
begin designing and eventually
[1:56:21]
development of two new fire stations as
[1:56:25]
we replace the fire stations on Cherry
[1:56:28]
and
[1:56:29]
Russian please consider that measure ll
[1:56:32]
in increase in the transient occupancy
[1:56:34]
tax commonly known as the hotel tax
[1:56:37]
passed with over
[1:56:39]
80%
[1:56:41]
support I'd like to personally thank the
[1:56:43]
International Association of
[1:56:45]
firefighters Local 55 for their support
[1:56:49]
of measure
[1:56:50]
LL we need to ensure that that these
[1:56:52]
public safety personnel who respond to
[1:56:55]
the most critical events whether fire or
[1:56:58]
medical have accommodations that align
[1:57:02]
with the dedicated service that they
[1:57:04]
provide our
[1:57:10]
community during my second term I will
[1:57:13]
ask my colleagues on the city council to
[1:57:15]
focus on the following Community Driven
[1:57:19]
priorities improve the quality of our
[1:57:22]
city
[1:57:23]
streets we recently surveyed our
[1:57:25]
residents and the number one priority
[1:57:28]
interestingly enough was not Public
[1:57:30]
Safety rather the conditions of our city
[1:57:33]
streets it is clear as we currently are
[1:57:37]
performing underground infrastructure on
[1:57:39]
our main thoroughfare Thorton Avenue as
[1:57:42]
we prepare to conduct a complete Street
[1:57:45]
rebuild from Thorton Avenue down to
[1:57:48]
Spruce Street we were so fortunate to
[1:57:52]
receive $4 million of support from
[1:57:56]
Congressman R cona and assembly member
[1:57:59]
Alex
[1:58:07]
Lee in addition we received $20 million
[1:58:11]
from the metropol Metropolitan
[1:58:13]
Transportation Commission for
[1:58:15]
infrastructure and other improvements
[1:58:17]
along that roadway we anticipate the
[1:58:19]
finalizing of the design and
[1:58:21]
construction doc doents next year and
[1:58:23]
construction will begin soon
[1:58:26]
thereafter Public Safety I've always
[1:58:29]
felt that we as the governing body have
[1:58:32]
no greater responsibility than ensuring
[1:58:34]
our residents are safe and feel safe to
[1:58:38]
that end when residents dial 911 our
[1:58:41]
public safety personnel continue to
[1:58:43]
respond in a timely manner to address
[1:58:46]
and resolve whatever emergency exists
[1:58:49]
our residents must have a sense that the
[1:58:52]
city of New York is a safe place to
[1:58:54]
raise a family and it is our
[1:58:56]
responsibility to provide our public
[1:58:58]
safety personnel with the tools and
[1:59:01]
equipment necessary to meet that
[1:59:11]
expectation
[1:59:14]
scrolling ladies and gentlemen we truly
[1:59:16]
have dedicated public servants in our
[1:59:19]
city government under the leadership of
[1:59:21]
our city Manager David
[1:59:24]
[Applause]
[1:59:32]
banon we also have such dedicated
[1:59:35]
employees working in a variety of
[1:59:37]
different departments in our city
[1:59:39]
ensuring that your requests for service
[1:59:42]
or the services that they provide are
[1:59:44]
nothing less than outstanding let's
[1:59:46]
thank all public all public employees
[1:59:49]
that are here today and tonight y
[1:59:52]
[Applause]
[2:00:01]
Newark Public
[2:00:03]
Schools I heard from many residents
[2:00:06]
concerned about the Newark Public
[2:00:08]
Schools I advise residents that we have
[2:00:10]
a separate elected school board and
[2:00:13]
encourage residents to remain or become
[2:00:16]
engaged with the nework Unified School
[2:00:18]
Board I do recognize that many of our
[2:00:21]
residents do not distinguish between
[2:00:23]
city government and the school district
[2:00:26]
I also recognize that several of our
[2:00:28]
newly elected Council would like to see
[2:00:30]
more interaction between the city and
[2:00:33]
the school district to see if there are
[2:00:35]
partnership
[2:00:36]
opportunities that will Elevate test
[2:00:38]
scores and to begin conversations as to
[2:00:41]
the best reuse for schools that have
[2:00:43]
become vacant due to declining
[2:00:46]
enrollment I'm committed to meeting with
[2:00:48]
the new president of the New York
[2:00:49]
Unified School Board to see where we can
[2:00:52]
assist the school board in achieving
[2:00:54]
these goals I'm appreciative of our city
[2:00:57]
manager David Bon who regularly meets
[2:01:00]
with the interim superintendent varar as
[2:01:03]
we seek commonality in lifting up our
[2:01:05]
schools to a point where residents are
[2:01:08]
desirous of sending their children to
[2:01:11]
their local neighborhood
[2:01:14]
school that's okay
[2:01:20]
[Applause]
[2:01:27]
this is a point in our history that is
[2:01:29]
historic we have three council members
[2:01:32]
who have spent over 50 years of combined
[2:01:35]
service to their Community simply stated
[2:01:38]
council members abadaka coyazo and vice
[2:01:40]
mayor freedus have clearly demonstrated
[2:01:43]
a love for our community and have served
[2:01:45]
us nobly always keeping the best
[2:01:48]
interest in the community at the
[2:01:50]
Forefront
[2:01:52]
will miss council member kaz's a
[2:01:53]
reminder at the close of every council
[2:01:55]
meeting with the request that we shop
[2:01:57]
new work this transition is historic but
[2:02:01]
also a great opportunity to begin a new
[2:02:04]
as I welcome council members Eve Marie
[2:02:06]
little Julie Del contonio and teren
[2:02:09]
grindall to join council member jorgens
[2:02:11]
and me as they have now assumed seats up
[2:02:15]
here at the dis I've had the opportunity
[2:02:18]
to meet with my new colleagues oneon-one
[2:02:20]
we''ve exchanged IDE on the future of
[2:02:22]
our community and these new council
[2:02:24]
members have some exciting ideas that
[2:02:27]
will further enhance the quality of our
[2:02:29]
community furthermore we discuss the
[2:02:32]
concept of what we have historically
[2:02:34]
described as the Newark
[2:02:36]
way this term carries some of the
[2:02:38]
following characteristics we were're
[2:02:41]
part of a team that seeks to improve the
[2:02:44]
quality of life for our residents of
[2:02:46]
those seeking to move into our city of
[2:02:50]
Newark we View Council meetings as
[2:02:52]
opportunity for
[2:02:54]
celebration and of course we treat each
[2:02:56]
other and City staff with the respect
[2:02:59]
that they have earned as dedicated
[2:03:01]
public servants each of these folks
[2:03:03]
brings different life experiences and
[2:03:05]
will undoubtedly chart a new and vibrant
[2:03:08]
course for our
[2:03:15]
community quite frankly as mayor I'm
[2:03:19]
excited to be able to lead and
[2:03:21]
participate with my Council colleagues
[2:03:23]
as we Define our new
[2:03:25]
future in conclusion I want to thank my
[2:03:27]
wife Kathleen my partner of 45 years who
[2:03:32]
managed my
[2:03:35]
[Applause]
[2:03:42]
campaign as my colleagues have pointed
[2:03:44]
out uh no day went without walking our
[2:03:49]
neighborhoods and when I would come home tired Kathy would say here's the
[2:03:55]
next neighborhood that you're going to
[2:03:58]
walk a little tidbit Kathleen managed my
[2:04:01]
University of Portland campaign when I
[2:04:03]
ran and was elected student body
[2:04:06]
president remember Cathy how we
[2:04:09]
mimeographed flyers and posted them in
[2:04:11]
dormitories or handed them out
[2:04:13]
campaigning was so much
[2:04:16]
simpler I'd like to thank my son James
[2:04:19]
and his wife Teresa and my grand kids
[2:04:21]
and E for being here tonight I know many
[2:04:24]
of my family members living up in Oregon
[2:04:25]
are watching these proceedings and I
[2:04:28]
want to thank them for their
[2:04:29]
encouragement and support so I thank you
[2:04:32]
for the opportunity to represent you as
[2:04:34]

[2:07:37]

you for those of you that don't know in
[2:09:10]
the city of Newark we rotate the vice

[2:09:17]
little will be our vice mayor for the
[2:09:18]

committees and you'll see it ladies and
[2:09:42]
gentlemen in front of
[2:09:44]
you I'm requesting your authorization
[2:09:48]
for these appointments if if you'd like
[2:09:51]
to take a moment to look at
[2:09:54]
them the uh critical issue there is when
[2:09:58]
you're listed as an Alternet my
[2:10:00]
expectation as the mayor is that we're
[2:10:01]
always going to attend any committee
[2:10:03]
that we are assigned to but if something
[2:10:06]
should occur vacation illness whatever
[2:10:09]
the case may be in most cases you have
[2:10:11]
an alternate so just let your alternate
[2:10:14]
know that you're not able to attend and
[2:10:16]
I'm certain that alternate uh would be
[2:10:18]
happy to do so
[2:10:22]
would in the anybody in the audience
[2:10:23]
like to speak to these
[2:10:26]
assignments any Council comments or
[2:10:28]
questions also to keep in mind
[2:10:30]
colleagues these are an annual
[2:10:32]
appointment so if there's an assignment
[2:10:35]
that you would like next year feel free
[2:10:37]
to uh look at that as an additional
[2:10:40]
opportunity okay I want to thank my
