[7:15] is the library of course. I'm Lori

[7:18] Barnes as the mayor said and uh I'm here

[7:20] tonight with my team of staff. Jennifer

[7:23] Stevenson who is a assistant director

[7:25] for public services, Nancy Anderson

[7:27] who's finance manager and well we also

[7:30] have some of our friends here. friends,

[7:32] would you please wave? Library

[7:34] supporters, we couldn't make it without

[7:35] our friends. They're awesome. I just

[7:37] wanted to begin by thanking you because

[7:40] we could not do all that we're doing at

[7:41] the Olive Branch Library, the BJ Chain

[7:44] Library without your support. And we're

[7:45] just always so grateful to you for that

[7:48] ongoing continued support. And I'm here

[7:50] to tell you tonight, you have a

[7:52] wonderful public serving library in your

[7:55] community that's doing incredible things

[7:57] every day. Uh you I hope that you're all

[8:00] very proud of that library because I

[8:01] know I certainly am. It's one of the

[8:03] very best libraries in the state of

[8:05] Mississippi. It's at least the second or

[8:07] third highest used library in the state

[8:09] of Mississippi. And uh it's just

[8:12] incredible all the things that that

[8:13] amazing staff does day in and day out to

[8:16] serve your constituents. At this time, I

[8:18] want to give you a little update on some

[8:19] positives that we've got going on. We

[8:22] measured continued high levels of

[8:23] library usage as is indicated by the

[8:25] number of items checked out. We've had

[8:28] high visitation in our libraries from

[8:30] the patrons coming in the library. We're

[8:33] providing even more library programs for

[8:35] all ages with increased attendance.

[8:38] We're having great success in the area

[8:39] of outreach services with partnering

[8:41] with local organizations. We've updated

[8:44] our technology, including our computers

[8:46] and software, and we continue to offer

[8:49] that 247 Wi-Fi service that people

[8:52] really enjoy and love to take advantage

[8:54] of. At this time, I'm going to turn over

[8:56] to Jennifer Stevenson, and she's going

[8:58] to give you an update for about

[8:59] statistics for the library. Thank you.

[9:03] >> Good afternoon. Thank you so much for

[9:05] having us, Mayor Adams, board of

[9:07] alderman, and alder women. I get to be

[9:09] the fun statistics person every year,

[9:12] but I like to talk about numbers, and we

[9:15] have some great numbers to brag on. As

[9:17] you'll see in your handout, we have one

[9:19] side that is the BJ Chain Public Library

[9:22] statistics and the other side which is

[9:25] First Regional Library. And it shows

[9:27] that last fiscal year we had over 94,000

[9:31] visitors just to the VJ Chain Public

[9:34] Library. And we had over 193,000

[9:38] items checked out just from the Olive

[9:41] Branch. And we had over 400 total

[9:44] programs and o almost 16,000 people

[9:48] attended programs just at our Olive

[9:50] Branch BJ Chain Public Library.

[9:54] So what does that all mean? because I

[9:56] like to kind of compare things. Well,

[10:00] last year we had almost 18% increase

[10:04] just in our summer reading programs.

[10:07] We've even built higher this this year

[10:09] for our summer reading program. We had

[10:12] an 18.48%

[10:15] increase over last year's number. So, we

[10:17] are steadily providing more and more

[10:19] services, more and more programs. The

[10:22] attendance has gone up 37%

[10:25] this year compared to last year of how

[10:29] many people attended. Just for our

[10:31] summer reading program, we had over

[10:32] 7,500 people in your library.

[10:37] I also want to compare and give you some

[10:39] bragging rights. You know, Lori said

[10:41] that Olive Branch was in the top three.

[10:44] Well, we're number one. First regional

[10:47] is number one in the state. Okay. We

[10:51] have with Olive Branch, they constitute

[10:54] 21% of our circulation

[10:57] and 13.8% of our FRL

[11:02] uh patron computer usage. But in the

[11:04] state of Mississippi,

[11:06] compared to the latest published fiscal

[11:09] year from the Mississippi Library

[11:11] Commission, FRL had 582,977

[11:18] visits that year compared to over 4

[11:21] million in the state. So for the state

[11:23] of Mississippi, First Regional Library

[11:26] represents 13.5%

[11:29] of all the people in this state walking

[11:31] into a public library.

[11:34] Now, as far as our circulation, again,

[11:37] First Regional Library is number one.

[11:40] We constitute over 900,000 checkouts,

[11:44] which is 15

[11:46] 15.7%

[11:48] of the entire state's checkouts in a

[11:52] public library. So, we work very hard

[11:54] and we're not satisfied with that. Every

[11:56] year, we try to do better. We try to do

[11:59] better not just for our library and our

[12:01] staff, but for your constituents. So, we

[12:04] very much appreciate everything that you

[12:06] do for the library and we will try to

[12:09] pay that back by always making you proud

[12:12] of what we're doing.

[12:15] >> We certainly are proud. I'm curious on

[12:16] those statistics. Uh the electronic

[12:19] devices or electronic medium versus hard

[12:22] copy good old books, how's that trending

[12:24] one versus the other? Well, certainly

[12:26] book circulation is highest. People most

[12:29] a lot of people that we serve still want

[12:31] that book in their hand, which we're

[12:33] happy to provide and we do provide. But

[12:36] I will tell you, it seems like the trend

[12:38] is more people are beginning to embrace

[12:42] uh electronic resources like ebooks. Uh

[12:45] our usage is higher uh than it's been at

[12:48] any point in time since we've offered

[12:50] ebooks. Uh we do have I I was sharing

[12:53] with another uh board of alderman uh

[12:55] earlier this summer. We do have some

[12:57] problems with that because uh first of

[13:00] all they're very expensive. You know we

[13:02] can buy a book a lot cheaper than we can

[13:04] typically buy an ebook. Also the

[13:06] publishing houses are very proprietary

[13:09] with their ebooks. They only let us

[13:11] circulate them so many times and then

[13:13] they take them away from us and if we

[13:15] want it to circulate more or we have

[13:17] demand for it more, we have to buy it

[13:19] again. So, we we do have those things

[13:21] that we contend with, but usage is very

[13:24] high. And I know because I'm the one who

[13:26] measures all the troubleshooting uh that

[13:28] goes on with our patrons. They'll

[13:29] contact me saying, "Hey, I need to get

[13:31] my pen or I need this or I need that."

[13:33] Our patrons are actually contacting me

[13:35] directly because I like to monitor that

[13:37] and the usage there is just really

[13:39] growing tremendously. So, um but I hope

[13:42] that answers your question, Mary.

[16:05] We get to award different employees with

[16:07] monies that are not from taxpayer

[16:09] dollars because we can't give away

[16:11] taxpayer dollars, but some citizens and

[16:13] businesses step up to let us recognize

[16:15] employees that go above and beyond in

[16:17] serving our citizens. And uh it was

[16:19] tough this time. The boards got all the

[16:20] recommendations. There were five

[16:23] recommendations and all of them were

[16:25] very very worthy. Uh but the winner at

[16:27] this time are these four gentlemen and

[16:30] submitted by division chief Kohia and he

[16:34] goes as follows. I respectfully submit

[16:36] this memorandum to nominate OBFD truck 2

[16:39] B shift Lieutenant John Magnapinto,

[16:41] firefighter Jackson Nimik, firefighter

[16:44] Anthony McGregor, and firefighter

[16:45] Coleman Dowel for the mayor's award in

[16:47] recognition of their exceptional

[16:48] service, dedication, and actions that

[16:51] went above and beyond the call of duty

[16:54] in service to the citizens of Olive

[16:55] Branch. On Saturday, July the 4th, the

[16:58] city of Olly Branch experienced a severe

[17:00] storm event that caused widespread

[17:03] damage throughout the community,

[17:04] including significant destruction at the

[17:06] city park. During this incident, Truck 2

[17:09] was a key company in the emergency

[17:11] response and played a critical role in

[17:13] assisting and rescuing citizens impacted

[17:15] by the storm. The crew operated under

[17:18] hazardous and challenging conditions

[17:20] while demonstrating outstanding

[17:22] professionalism, teamwork, and

[17:23] commitment to public safety. Their

[17:26] service continued beyond the immediate

[17:28] emergency response following the storm.

[17:30] The Olive Branch Emergency

[17:32] Communications E91 dis E 911 dispatch

[17:36] center experienced a failure of its

[17:37] communication system. Although local

[17:40] resources were able to restore limited

[17:42] dispatch operations and radio

[17:44] communications using a temporary backup

[17:47] system. What does that mean? Handheld

[17:48] radio.

[17:50] >> That's usually a backup system. Okay. A

[17:52] backup system. Full repairs were

[17:54] expected to take up to 5 days. This

[17:56] created a significant challenge for

[17:58] emergency operations and the continued

[18:00] ability to provide reliable services to

[18:02] the citizens of O branch. After

[18:04] receiving the request for assistance,

[18:06] Lieutenant John Magnapinto and the Truck

[18:09] 2 crew responded to the OBBC facility

[18:12] utilizing the ladder truck. The crew

[18:15] assessed an antenna approximately 75 ft

[18:18] above the ground and successfully reset

[18:20] the equipment. Their actions were

[18:22] directly responsible for restoring the

[18:23] city's communication system to full

[18:25] operational capacity, significantly

[18:28] reducing the impact of outage and

[18:30] ensuring emergency responders had

[18:32] reliable communications. After

[18:34] completing this critical assignment,

[18:36] Trump 2 returned to service and

[18:38] continued responding to emergency calls

[18:40] and protecting the citizens of Olive

[18:42] Branch throughout the remainder of their

[18:43] shift. The actions of Lieutenant

[18:44] Magnapinto, firefighter Nimchek,

[18:47] firefighter McGregor, and firefighter

[18:49] Dao represent the very best qualities of

[18:51] public service. I agree. Their

[18:53] willingness to respond wherever they

[18:55] were needed, utilize their specialized

[18:57] equipment and training, and assist

[18:59] beyond their normal responsibilities had

[19:01] a direct and positive impact on the

[19:04] safety and well-being of the community.

[19:06] Their professionalism, initiative,

[19:08] teamwork, and dedication to the citizens

[19:09] of Olive Branch make them highly

[19:11] deserving of the mayor's award. I

[19:13] respectfully recommend that Olive Branch

[19:15] Fire Department Truck 2 Bshift recognize

[19:18] this recognition for their exceptional

[19:21] service and commitment to the community.

[19:23] So, Lieutenant, you see when you make

[19:25] division chief, how much longer you have

[19:27] to write more detailed and precise but

[19:30] very well-written document. Uh, so it is

[19:34] my pleasure to award you with

[19:41] four Chris $100 bills each.
