[5:42] I want to continue to work with
[5:44] you guys as vice President Of
[5:45] academic affairs.
[5:47] I am excited for that.
[5:51] So I will still be involved here
[5:52] at pasadena city college.

[5:56] the associated students.
[5:59] Thank you again very much for
[6:00] everything that this college has

[6:07] [Applause]
[6:28] Secretary vurdien: this will
[6:29] come later.
[6:37] Vice President Selvidge:
[6:37] it is
[6:38] now time for public comment on
[6:39] items not on the agenda.
[6:39] Do we have any speaker cards?
[6:45] Trustee fellow:
[6:45] yes, Mr.
[6:46] President.
[6:50] First, martin
[6:50] enriquez.
[6:54] >> good evening.
[6:58] i am martin enriquez.
[7:04] I will read into the record
[7:04] the
[7:07] letter of monsignor rodriguez.
[7:11] Into the record.
[7:13] This letter was addressed to
[7:14] walter t sheffer the
[7:20] ii.
[7:22] I e-mailed this letter in 1992
[7:22] to a member of the board.
[7:27] So what I read is not a
[7:28] surprise
[7:28] and hand-deliver the copy.
[7:35] Monsignor english
[7:36] '
[7:36] s letter reads
[7:36] as follows.
[7:41] As the pastor of
[7:42] saint andrew'
[7:42] s
[7:44] church, I am concerned about the
[7:44] well-being of the chicano and
[7:48] hispano
[7:49] community, both in the
[7:50] spiritual and worldly realms.
[7:53] St. Andrews is the largest
[7:56] church in western pasadena,
[7:57] serving the spiritual needs of
[7:58] its adherence.
[8:00] The bulk of the congregation is
[8:03] latino, of mexican heritage.
[8:07] As
[8:08] such, the interest of the
[8:09] chicano and hispano catholic
[8:13] community are the interest of
[8:13] st. Andrew'
[8:14] s catholic church.
[8:18] He goes on to write
[8:19] I found his
[8:22] presentation forceful and
[8:22] convincing.
[8:23] I concur with his findings.
[8:27] Then he urges
[8:29] , I, meaning tobias
[8:32] english, urged the board of
[8:33] trustees to give serious thought
[8:36] to the plan proposed by yours
[8:36] truly.
[8:37] Thank you very much.
[8:43] Trustee fellow:
[8:43] thank you.
[8:45] We have two requests to speak
[8:47] about the armenian resident --
[8:47] armenian genocide resolution.
[8:49] Would you like to talk about it
[8:52] now or when the item comes up?
[8:54] Ok, both of you?
[8:56] Ok.
[8:56] There are no others.
[9:02] Vice President Selvidge:
[9:03] thank you.
[9:03] The next order business is the
[9:04] approval of minutes.
[9:07] We have the approval of minutes
[9:10] for a meeting number 10, meeting
[9:14] number 11, May 10, 2016, meeting
[9:19] number 12, session
[9:19] meeting May
[9:19] 18, 2016.
[9:21] Trustee banh: motion to approve.
[9:34] Trustee brown: I second.
[9:36] Vice President Selvidge: all in
[9:37] favor?
[9:40] The motion carried unanimously.
[9:55] Item e,
[9:55] approval of consent
[9:56] items.
[9:57] Are there any consent items that
[9:58] any trustee was like brought out
[10:00] separately?
[10:03] Trustee fellow: motion to
[10:04] approve consent items.
[10:07] Vice President Selvidge: axa,
[10:08] one item has been pulled from
[10:09] the consent agenda.
[10:11] This is consent item trustee
[10:13] brown:
[10:16] -- this is consent
[10:19] item 234-b.
[10:25] We have a motion to approve and
[10:25] a second.
[10:27] All in favor.
[10:35] The motion carried unanimously.
[10:40] Action items recommended for
[10:45] approval item
[10:47] f, oath of office.
[10:55] Well nune c
[10:56] aripian join me and
[10:59] President Vurdien at the
[11:00] lectern.
[11:19] this
[11:20] is the official oath of
[11:20] office for student trustee.
[11:25] I might add that
[11:26] nune is a
[11:29] political science major.
[11:34] Or July to make any remarks?
[11:39] Secretary vurdien:
[11:42] nune garibian
[11:44] has been a model student of the
[11:46] college.
[11:48] I was very impressed by how much
[11:52] nun
[11:53] e all it takes work at the
[11:53] college level.
[11:58] As mentioned by
[11:59] trustee Dr. Ross
[12:04] selvidge, nune will go
[12:04] to law
[12:06] school after completing her
[12:06] degree in political science.
[12:08] She will be transferring for the
[12:09] fall of 2017.
[12:13] During the two years that she
[12:14] has been at the college, she has
[12:15] made a very construct of
[12:21] participation -- constructive
[12:21] participation of not only the
[12:23] department of associated student
[12:23] affairs, but also the college at
[12:24] large.
[12:28] We congratulate you on your
[12:29] election to trustee.
[12:32] >> thank you.
[12:35] Vice President Selvidge: raise
[12:35] your right hand.
[12:38] And I will read the oath and you
[12:39] will repeat after me.
[12:45] I do solemnly swear
[12:45] -- that I
[12:52] will support and defend --
[12:52] the
[12:53] constitution of the united
[12:54] states and the constitution of
[12:59] the state of california --
[12:59] against all enemies foreign and
[13:05] domestic --
[13:05] that I will bear
[13:11] true faith and allegiance --
[13:11] to
[13:12] the constitution of the united
[13:12] states and the constitution of
[13:18] the state of california --
[13:18] that
[13:23] I take this obligation freely --
[13:23] without any mental reservation
[13:28] or purpose of evasion
[13:29] -- and
[13:31] that it will well and faithfully
[13:35] -- discharge the duties upon
[13:37] which I am about to enter.
[13:40] Congratulations.
[13:40] [Applause]
[13:45] Would you like to say something?
[13:49] Secretary vurdien: you can sit
[13:49] over there.
[13:50] Vice President Selvidge: you
[13:52] need to sign right here.
[14:08] Thank
[14:08] you.
[14:29] Vice President Selvidge: the
[14:29] next order of business is item
[14:35] g, adopt resolution number 553
[14:38] reserves for contingencies
[14:38] 2015-2016.
[14:40] Dr. Vurdien?
[14:43] Secretary vurdien: we are asking
[14:47] that the board approve this
[14:48] resolution, number 553.
[14:52] And that is routine to adopt the
[14:57] reserves for contingencies for
[14:58] 2015-20 16 in the amount of
[14:59] $20,000.
[15:01] Vice President Selvidge: is
[15:02] there any discussion?
[15:04] Trustee fellow: motion to
[15:04] approve.
[15:07] Trustee brown: I will second the
[15:07] motion.
[15:11] Vice President Selvidge: the
[15:11] item has been moved and
[15:11] seconded.
[15:13] Any further discussion?
[15:14] All in favor?
[15:21] The item passes unanimously.
[15:35] Is this a blanket vote?
[15:36] [Laughter]
[15:42] Item h,
[15:42] approval of equal
[15:43] opportunity fund, multiple
[15:44] method allocation model
[15:49] certification for fiscal year
[15:50] 2015-2016.
[15:52] Secretary vurdien: it is
[15:52] recommended that the board of
[15:55] trustees approved this multiple
[15:56] method allocation model
[15:56] certification form.
[16:00] What this does is informs the
[16:00] chancellor'
[16:00] s office that they
[16:04] college has followed everything
[16:05] that the chancellor'
[16:06] s office
[16:07] wants us to do and that we have
[16:08] complied about the multiple
[16:09] method allocation model when it
[16:14] comes to the eeo
[16:14] pasadena
[16:16] college district.
[16:20] Trustee fellow: it looks at we
[16:23] have complied, so I move this
[16:24] motion.
[16:25] Trustee brown: I second the
[16:26] motion.
[16:27] Vice President Selvidge: any
[16:28] further discussion?
[16:29] All in favor?
[16:35] The motion passes unanimously.
[16:35] Think you.
[16:41] Approval item I,
[16:42] approval of
[16:42] items and deletions to the
[16:44] current -- seesmic, to the
[16:46] credit curriculum.
[16:48] Secretary vurdien: we are
[16:51] recommending the addition of one
[16:52] credit course and the deletion
[16:53] of three other courses.
[16:56] And as you will notice, the
[16:58] deletions are due to the fact
[16:58] that those courses are no longer
[17:00] current and the addition is the
[17:04] required
[17:05] , one of the new courses
[17:07] for the transfer degrees and
[17:08] also to transfer to ucs.
[17:10] Vice President Selvidge: thank
[17:12] you.
[17:12] are there any questions from the
[17:13] board?
[17:16] Do I hear a motion?
[17:18] Trustee fellow: motion to
[17:18] approve.
[17:20] Trustee martin: second.
[17:24] Vice President Selvidge: we have
[17:25] a motion to approve and a
[17:25] second.
[17:26] All in favor?
[17:34] Thank you.
[17:38] We need a rollcall on this.
[17:43] Trustee martin:
[17:44] that'
[17:44] s what the
[17:44] lights are for.
[17:55] Vice President Selvidge: did you
[17:57] record who had their lights on
[17:58] for yes and no?
[18:14] Thank you.
[18:20] Item j, portman to measure p
[18:20] citizens oversight committee.
[18:22] Secretary vurdien: we currently
[18:30] have four
[18:30] vacancies.
[18:31] Three of the vacancies are to be
[18:31] appointed by trustees to
[18:32] represent their respective
[18:32] trustee areas.
[18:34] And the fourth one to represent
[18:35] the senior citizens
[18:35] organization.
[18:41] The board members have
[18:44] nominated
[18:47] Mr. Rick alvarez to represent
[18:48] trustee area 3.
[18:51] Dr. Bill opel to represent
[18:52] trustee area 2.
[18:59] And Dr. Joseph piza
[18:59] ronian to
[19:00] represent the senior citizens
[19:00] organization.
[19:02] We have another\_
[19:03] ul vacancy to be
[19:06] appointed for area 1.
[19:08] Vice President Selvidge: with
[19:12] the trustees like to make a
[19:13] comment about the individuals
[19:13] they have nominated?
[19:15] Mr. Oesterle?
[19:18] trustee osterling: I nominated
[19:22] bill opel to serve as the person
[19:26] on the committee to represent
[19:29] trustee area 2 bill is very
[19:30] financially sophisticated.
[19:30] But also, bill has been actively
[19:33] involved in the pcc foundation
[19:34] for many years.
[19:37] So I think he brings a great
[19:41] balance of looking out for the
[19:43] taxpayers interest, but also has
[19:43] a passionate dedication to the
[19:44] college.
[19:49] Vice President Selvidge:
[19:49] I would
[19:50] like to add that, a long, long
[19:51] time ago, bill opel and I both
[19:55] belonged to the islanders -- the
[19:59] highlanders club, the climbing
[20:00] club here when we were students.
[20:04] Trustee brown: I persuaded Mr.
[20:09] Recall of ours -- rick
[20:09] calaveras
[20:14] olivarez
[20:15] to serve because he loves pcc.
[20:20] In fact, he was
[20:20] graciously open
[20:22] to welcome our President When he
[20:23] first came here.
[20:27] But the bottom line is that
[20:27] he
[20:31] is a city attorney and he really
[20:34] wants to be involved in the
[20:34] affairs of pcc.
[20:37] And of course, he would be a
[20:40] wonderful person to work on
[20:40] [Indiscernible]
[20:42] I'
[20:43] m very proud to have him join
[20:43] us.
[20:46] Vice President Selvidge: thank
[20:46] you.
[20:53] With respect to Mr. Zero
[20:53] nian, I
[20:54] have known him for quite a long
[20:57] time for various civic
[20:58] activities here the city of
[20:58] pasadena.
[21:00] I am delighted that he is both a
[21:01] graduate of the university of
[21:03] southern california and a former
[21:04] naval officer, as am I.
[21:06] I am very pleased with that.
[21:09] I have asked an individual to
[21:12] formally accept my nomination of
[21:13] him and I expect to present his
[21:16] name at the next board meeting
[21:19] for representation of area 1.
[21:24] So do I have a motion for the
[21:28] three individuals names to
[21:29] be
[21:34] appointed to the Mr. P
[21:35] oversight
[21:36] committee?
[21:41] All in favor?
[21:46] The motion passes unanimously.
[21:51] Vitamin k, board policy
[21:52] revisions.
[22:01] -- item k, board policy
[22:01] revisions.
[22:02] It is a member of the committee
[22:02] going to speak on these?
[22:07] >> I'
[22:07] m a member of the
[22:07] committee.
[22:14] There is nothing out of the
[22:14] ordinary here.
[22:18] It is just policies
[22:22] policy statements.
[22:22] Everything is up to date.
[22:26] >> I would like to speak.
[22:29] Vice President Selvidge: trustee
[22:34] brown. Trustee brown: one
[22:35] is the
[22:38] student -- which is pretty
[22:38] clear-cut.
[22:41] The one that is impressive to me
[22:44] is the one in articulation.
[22:48] We had two sets.
[22:53] The
[22:53] articulation for high
[22:54] schools and college, where
[22:57] students can take ap classes.
[23:03] To me
[23:04] what came out very clearly
[23:04] is the importance that the
[23:08] articulation, classes, the
[23:11] students, and the faculty of
[23:13] high school and
[23:16] faculty of
[23:16] college have to agree that this
[23:20] is something that is going to be
[23:24] credited.
[23:30] If there is a high
[23:34] school -- if
[23:37] students wanted to take college
[23:43] credit classes, there has
[23:43] to be
[23:44] a written agreement between the
[23:49] faculty from pcc
[23:49] and the faculty
[23:52] from the high school so these
[23:53] classes will be honored.
[23:56] I like this articulation.
[24:01] Vice President Selvidge: thank
[24:01] you very much.
[24:02] Any of the trustees would like
[24:03] to comment on this?
[24:05] Do I hear a motion?
[24:09] To prove the three policy
[24:10] revisions?
[24:14] -- to approve the three policy
[24:15] revisions?
[24:19] We have a motion and a second.
[24:20] All in favor?
[24:24] The passes unanimous.
[24:27] -- the past is unanimous.
[24:33] Item l, a
[24:33] duct resolution 555 in
[24:38] support of A.B. 2222
[24:41] -- adopt
[24:43] resolution number 555 in support
[24:45] of A.B. 2222.
[24:50] >> this would help the students
[24:51] not only of our district but
[24:52] also the community college
[24:56] students
[24:57] to have cards and make
[25:00] a program that would help them
[25:01] get those passes and transit
[25:05] passes more easily at an
[25:06] affordable rate.
[25:09] Vice President Selvidge: this
[25:10] came through the legislative
[25:11] committee.
[25:14] Trustee white? Do you have a
[25:18] comment?
[25:21] Trustee white: we felt this was
[25:23] a very important bill, because
[25:28] we have -- we know our students
[25:28] have transportation costs.
[25:35] The cost has gone up for
[25:35] students.
[25:39] This is a bill that would
[25:43] correct that
[25:44] For us it is an important
[25:48] component of community
[25:49] education.
[25:54] The cost of transportation, the
[25:54] cost of books.
[25:58] These are all something we are
[25:58] working on and supportive of.
[26:03] There was a question from one of
[26:08] our trustees about the back of
[26:09] the bill and sponsorship.
[26:13] That was the shortcoming of our
[26:14] recommendation, what we didn'
[26:16] do and what we should have done
[26:19] is include a link to the
[26:22] legislative council digest so
[26:23] you can be fully informed about
[26:23] the bill.
[26:26] That is something we will pay
[26:27] attention to as we move forward.
[26:33] Trustee brown:
[26:33] is this the bill
[26:37] that was brought through by
[26:37] holden?
[26:40] I know there was a lot of
[26:43] lobbying to try to get this bill
[26:47] through for our students.
[26:48] So I am definitely in support of
[26:48] it.
[26:51] Vice President Selvidge: any
[26:52] other questions?
[26:55] Trustee osterling: I support
[26:59] this and just want to point out
[27:03] here in california the way our
[27:06] community college system works,
[27:07] the price of tuition is
[27:07] relatively low.
[27:09] Sometimes the barrier of
[27:15] difficulty
[27:16] to college education
[27:17] such as books, and it don'
[27:18] delay when I have been here and
[27:19] talking to students on campus,
[27:25] -- anecdotally
[27:26] when I have been
[27:27] here and talking to students on
[27:29] campus, we can'
[27:30] t change the
[27:32] length of time it takes to get
[27:33] here, but we can support and
[27:36] subsidize the cost to do that.
[27:41] Vice President Selvidge: I
[27:41] have
[27:43] one question, what does the bill
[27:46] say with respect to the course
[27:47] load or the full-time, part-time
[27:51] break? And the funds that would
[27:51] be dedicated?
[28:00] And ike knowledge this May be
[28:02] complicated because state lie
[28:03] there are transit agencies here
[28:03] and there.
[28:08] That is a bit of interest to our
[28:08] students.
[28:18] >> if you are not aware last
[28:21] week the -- passed a pilot
[28:23] project that is connected to
[28:24] this.
[28:26] And they reduce their course
[28:28] load requirement to eight units
[28:30] for student eligibility for
[28:30] their current college student
[28:31] past.
[28:36] Eight units is what is expected
[28:36] to right now.
[28:40] In the bill itself there is no
[28:40] unit requirement.
[28:44] There is
[28:45] a low income
[28:47] requirement, but I believe most
[28:47] community colleges meet that.
[28:51] Based on a percentage of
[28:53] students on few other waivers.
[28:58] Vice President
[28:59] Selvidge: any
[28:59] other comments?
[29:00] Do I hear a motion?
[29:03] >> I move approval.
[29:04] >> second.
[29:07] Vice President Selvidge: all in
[29:07] favor?
[29:10] Passes unanimously.
[29:20] adopt resolution number 55 six
[29:20] in commemoration of the first
[29:26] 100th anniversary
[29:28] --
[29:30] commemoration of the 101st
[29:31] anniversary of the armenian
[29:32] genocide, April 2016.
[29:48] >>
[29:50] under President Of the
[29:50] armenian association here at
[29:51] school.
[29:55] I would like to say a few words
[29:55] about how much this resolution
[29:57] is important to the club.
[30:01] Our club consists
[30:05] of 160
[30:08] students and way more alumni we
[30:09] had that were all regularly
[30:12] attending different events and
[30:12] fundraisers.
[30:15] We have done many things this
[30:18] year including cultural
[30:18] education and entertaining
[30:20] events.
[30:25] Educational such as the
[30:29] corporation -- as the
[30:29] cooperation we have with
[30:35] educational committee,
[30:35] the
[30:35] relations committee from the
[30:36] pasadena district here.
[30:43] And entertaining the
[30:44] -- we are
[30:45] going to santa barbara every
[30:47] year annually and having it
[30:47] games with other schools such as
[30:49] usc.
[30:54] This is a very big deal for our
[30:56] club, because we don'
[30:58] t consist
[30:59] of only armenians.
[31:00] Our goal is to bring together
[31:03] armenians and non-armenians and
[31:09] teach to the pcc
[31:09] people, our
[31:10] cause, our tradition, our
[31:10] culture.
[31:15] And how much we have been heard
[31:18] from these -- from this
[31:18] genocide.
[31:22] i would like to look him you as
[31:23] well to our next event that we
[31:25] are going to have next semester
[31:29] to learn more.
[31:33] I really appreciate your time.
[31:34] Thank you.
[31:37] Vice President Selvidge: our
[31:40] next speaker is --
[31:49] >> good evening board of
[31:50] trustees and President
[31:50] Superintendent.
[31:54] I am
[31:54] part of the armenian
[31:55] national committee pasadena
[31:55] chapter.
[32:00] want to start off by saying
[32:01] thank you for passing a
[32:02] resolutions in the past.
[32:05] It has been a tremendous support
[32:07] to see the board of trustees and
[32:08] pcc has been so supportive to
[32:12] the armenian community and
[32:13] making sure our history and
[32:15] culture has recognized, not only
[32:18] by pcc but our students and
[32:19] supporting our students,
[32:20] including the armenian student
[32:21] association.
[32:25] He has been very
[32:25] active as the
[32:28] past President Here, in making
[32:29] sure the armenian student
[32:30] association has a presence here
[32:34] on campus
[32:34] , as well as the
[32:35] greater community of pasadena.
[32:38] He has partner with the city of
[32:39] pasadena human relations
[32:42] commission and has actually held
[32:43] several forums here at pcc.
[32:47] These events,
[32:47] including the
[32:49] resolution, show how important
[32:50] it is for the armenian community
[32:53] and the armenian students to
[32:54] have a voice.
[32:59] Bo7
[33:00] I do encourage you to pass it
[33:00] again this time around.
[33:04] we are looking forward to our
[33:05] continued partnership with the
[33:09] armenian national committee of
[33:09] america and the board of
[33:09] trustees.
[33:10] Thank you so much.
[33:14] Vice President Selvidge: thank
[33:15] you, Dr. Vurdien?
[33:21] Secretary vurdien:
[33:21] the college
[33:23] or commenced the board of
[33:24] trustees passes this resolution
[33:27] in support of not only the
[33:28] armenian students at pasadena
[33:31] city college, but also the 1.5
[33:37] million men and women
[33:41] We have also recommend that the
[33:46] board works
[33:47] two and a credible
[33:51] constructive, stable, and --
[33:52] armenian-turkish relations.
[33:59] >> motion to approve.
[34:08] >> first of all I wanted to
[34:08] commend the armenian community
[34:12] in general for constantly
[34:16] reminding us if we forget about
[34:18] the events of history we are
[34:20] doomed to repeat them.
[34:23] Secondly our requests to --
[34:26] if you could give us e-mail
[34:27] notification to the trustees of
[34:29] coming events.
[34:39] I would also like to say
[34:41] congratulations to you on this
[34:42] resolution.
[34:45] I think it is a very grim
[34:46] reminder to all of us of events
[34:48] occurring right now around the
[34:48] world and we always have to be
[34:52] mindful of fellow human beings.
[34:58] >> any other comments?
[35:04] Last year I did a certain
[35:06] amount
[35:07] of reading up and I mentioned
[35:11] last year when the resolution
[35:16] came before the board that one
[35:17] of the starkest ways that
[35:20] somebody can get an appreciation
[35:26] of what went on
[35:27] in the eastern
[35:28] ottoman empire is to read the
[35:31] diplomatic dispatches of
[35:33] ambassador morgan fall.
[35:39] He was sent to the state
[35:42] department into diplomatic
[35:44] dispatches.
[35:52] There is a lot of of strife
[35:55] going on there now.
[35:57] I know one location that was
[35:58] mentioned by ambassador morgan
[36:01] anthall.
[36:11] A very prominent city and
[36:13] trading center in that area, you
[36:17] read about it in his dispatches.
[36:19] They are in the news today.
[36:20] Any other comments?
[36:26] >> I would move approval.
[36:34] Vice President Selvidge: all in
[36:35] favor, it passes unanimously.
[36:40] Information item,
[36:44] superintendent, rep for it --
[36:45] superintendent President Report.
[36:49] Secretary vurdien: I want to
[36:53] start by thanking the board by
[36:58] approving the item, the
[36:58] whole
[36:59] number of administrators and
[37:02] faculty and staff.
[37:07] I know we are looking forward to
[37:09] the three new vice President'
[37:12] approved today to join us, Dr.
[37:13] Lisa norman as vice President
[37:16] For human resources, vice
[37:20] President Of instruction, and
[37:21] Dr. Richard -- vice President Of
[37:22] business and administrative
[37:22] services.
[37:24] And we also have in the same
[37:29] list four new deans
[37:29] that have
[37:31] been approved by the board.
[37:32] Two of them are not with us
[37:32] today.
[37:36] They are Dr. Natalie russell for
[37:37] esl and foreign languages and
[37:42] missed the on miller --
[37:42] Miss The
[37:47] on miller -- Miss Dion
[37:47] miller.
[37:53] We have our new
[37:55] dean for the
[37:56] business division.
[37:59] Play stand to be reckoned --
[38:00] please stand to be recognized.
[38:00] [Applause]
[38:04] We also have the dean of
[38:05] mathematics.
[38:05] [Applause]
[38:10] And in the same list we also
[38:14] have our new director,
[38:18] permanent director of transfer
[38:18] and outreach.
[38:19] [Applause]
[38:26] And I know we have Miss
[38:26] -- in
[38:27] the business division.
[38:27] [Applause]
[38:31] And we have our new permanent
[38:37] counselor
[38:37] , now to become a
[38:40] permanent counselor --
[38:41] [Applause]
[38:47] And I hope I did not
[38:47] -- if there
[38:49] is anyone in the general public
[38:51] please raise your hand so we May
[38:52] recognize you.
[38:55] That'
[38:56] s true.
[39:02] Our new entry, my executive
[39:02] director of information
[39:03] technology.
[39:03] [Applause]
[39:06] I apologize to you.
[39:13] I forgot you just got this new
[39:13] position.
[39:23] I also wanted that -- also want
[39:24] to take a moment to thank all
[39:27] the faculty members [Applause]
[39:27] And our staff and
[39:28] administrators.
[39:37] I am proud to say that
[39:38] the way
[39:38] the hiring happened this
[39:42] semester, pasadena city college
[39:44] should probably be a role model
[39:47] for the state that has been
[39:48] wanting for a long time to be
[39:52] pushing colleges and diversify
[39:52] their faculty.
[39:56] As of now we have
[39:59] probably 67
[40:04] through 70% of new hires come
[40:06] through groups that have been
[40:06] underrepresented in higher
[40:07] education and administration.
[40:16] We work diligently to ensure
[40:20] that our faculty and staff and
[40:20] administration kept the
[40:21] appropriate training when it
[40:24] comes to cultural sensitivity.
[40:29] I would like to
[40:30] congratulate the
[40:30] associated students and dean of
[40:34] student life, as well as
[40:37] everyone else who worked to have
[40:42] the new pass receive
[40:42] approval at
[40:42] last thursday'
[40:43] s metro board
[40:43] meeting.
[40:47] We have
[40:48] partnered for many years
[40:49] in finding ways to reduce
[40:50] transportation costs for our
[40:50] students.
[40:53] Today we saw our board as a
[40:58] resolution -- our board pass a
[40:59] resolution in support of that.
[41:06] The trustee, Dr. Foster, myself,
[41:12] and Mr. Alex,
[41:12] our executive
[41:13] director for strategic planning
[41:19] and communications
[41:19] will be going
[41:19] to sacramento.
[41:33] Next tuesday we will have an
[41:36] opportunity at lunchtime to
[41:36] share with business and city
[41:41] leaders
[41:44] the project that the
[41:45] pasadena city college is working
[41:47] on.
[41:53] We know it would be an
[41:54] opportunity for us to inform the
[42:01] community as to the vision
[42:01] and
[42:02] the district has put future of
[42:06] education
[42:07] in this area of
[42:07] california.
[42:18] We significantly helped the
[42:19] economic workforce in the
[42:19] region.
[42:22] Finally I would like to
[42:26] congratulate our
[42:27] restorative
[42:27] program, which was recently
[42:32] named as the recipient of the
[42:33] --
[42:33] for the foundation of laboratory
[42:34] technology.
[42:40] It is a testament to the quality
[42:43] of our faculty, staff and
[42:43] students.
[42:49] Also the same program had a 100
[42:52] pass rate at the board exam,
[42:54] which not to many colleges can
[42:54] boast of.
[42:57] That concludes my report.
[43:06] Vice President Selvidge:
[43:06] announcement by shared
[43:07] governance for presented as an
[43:07] board of trustees.
[43:11] Academic senate? >> nothing to
[43:11] announce.
[43:15] Vice President Selvidge:
[43:16] management association?
[43:18] >> we will be sponsoring a
[43:25] classified appreciation day
[43:25] -- a
[43:25] class appreciation day to
[43:28] accommodate the two morning and
[43:29] evening shifts.
[43:38] Vice President Selvidge: --
[43:38] senate?
[43:43] We have a
[43:43] new face representing
[43:44] the associated students.
[43:48] >> good afternoon to the board
[43:49] of trustees.
[43:54] My name is julia russo
[43:56] I am the newly elected President
[43:56] Of associated students.
[44:00] I look
[44:01] forward to working with
[44:01] each and every one of you this
[44:02] upcoming year.
[44:04] Our entire board has switched
[44:08] out
[44:14] In addition I
[44:15] would like to give
[44:16] a short message on irving'
[44:16] behalf.
[44:20] He would like to thank everyone
[44:20] for a great year and for the
[44:21] support.
[44:25] I'
[44:26] m honored to have the
[44:29] opportunity to sit.
[44:31] I know julia russo will do a
[44:36] fantastic job
[44:37] and let'
[44:37] s work
[44:38] together to make sure we achieve
[44:38] our goals at pasadena city
[44:39] college.
[44:42] Vice President Selvidge: I met
[44:46] julia at an event at the pacific
[44:49] asian museum, our us -- our
[44:50] local simply men had sponsored
[44:50] it.
[44:55] I believe I was right after the
[44:55] election.
[44:59] Congratulations and thank you
[45:03] for taking on the workload you
[45:03] are going to assume this
[45:04] upcoming year.
[45:08] Item keep.
[45:14] -- item he --
[45:17] item p.
[45:21] Any comments by board members?
[45:22] Trustee osterling?
[45:27] Trustee osterling:
[45:27] our prayers
[45:30] go out to the village college --
[45:33] to the fellow college campus at
[45:34] ucla and other colleges that
[45:34] have experienced violence.
[45:39] Trustee
[45:42] martin: I'
[45:42] m going to
[45:43] send a versatile complementing
[45:47] congratulations to Dr.
[45:49] Vurdien,
[45:52] but for all the campus for these
[45:53] new hires.
[46:00] I know from what we read there
[46:01] were 75 applicants for each one
[46:02] and we were just reading one.
[46:07] What would 75 times
[46:07] this be?
[46:08] That would be pretty high.
[46:12] A lot
[46:13] of people did a lot of
[46:15] work to get through that many
[46:15] applicants through the process
[46:19] and properly screen
[46:19] from our
[46:20] pression on the board.
[46:23] -- our impression on the board.
[46:30] Particularly Dr. Vurdien.
[46:34] I am thrilled he has had the
[46:37] opportunity to in some ways
[46:40] choose his team.
[46:41] And I'
[46:42] m very excited for him and
[46:47] for us, because I
[46:48] know my
[46:52] lessons and management,
[46:53] kind of
[46:55] in the old japanese model, the
[46:55] ability to be able to work
[46:59] ollaboratively is higher value
[46:59] than even competency.
[47:06] It appears we have the best of
[47:06] both, so I am very excited about
[47:07] all of this.
[47:11] I wanted
[47:13] to commend you and you
