[6:54] and makes lemonade out of them

[6:58] she decided that making the

[7:02] everyone aware of the the

[7:04] dangers of that disease and to

[7:06] make sure that we specifically

[7:08] were aware she decided that she

[7:12] would take on the task of being

[7:14] one of the very few people in

[7:16] the country who have dedicated

[7:18] their life to making us aware of

[7:22] colorectal cancer in which case

[7:22] in her neighborhood she has

[7:26] raised thousands of dollars

[7:28] toward both making us aware and

[7:29] finding a cure

[7:30] for her efforts

[7:35] we are presenting her today with

[7:38] a resolution recognizing all of

[7:40] her contributions to the

[7:42] awareness of this horrible

[7:46] disease and hope for a speedy

[7:48] cure for it's at some point in

[7:50] the future. thank you very much

[17:46] friends colleagues and everyone

[20:25] a lot of people's college years.

[20:25] what you should get

[20:28] the friendship, the knowledge

[20:31] the relationships

[20:35] and I just want to appreciate

[20:37] that and especially my friends

[20:39] that have kept me out of trouble

[20:42] when you go a few hours from

[20:44] home, the people at home worry

[20:46] about what you'll do and what

[20:47] you'll say and it's always good

[20:48] to have great friends with you

[20:49] to take care of you

[20:53] I want to thank the people of

[20:54] the oth district, the largest

[20:56] district in the state we're the

[20:58] only one that borders Iowa and

[21:00] Illinois and it causes certain

[21:01] votes that we take

[21:04] and I just want to say to my

[21:06] friends on the other side of the

[21:07] aisle and some in here

[21:10] at certain areas the rural areas

[21:12] have different priorities. We

[21:14] have a different taxation and we

[21:15] have a lot of different

[21:18] we're not voting certain ways

[21:20] because we're mad or whatnot but

[21:22] we are trying to protect our

[21:23] areas and we do have different

[21:24] priorities. So I hope everybody

[21:25] respects that

[21:30] I would say for everyone here

[21:33] that's going to be continue here

[21:34] and new people on the sidelines

[21:35] coming in

[21:37] just stand close to your

[21:38] principles if you always tell

[21:40] the truth and always say what

[21:41] you think you don't have to

[21:41] remember what you've said or

[21:42] what you

[21:44] told someone else and that's

[21:45] pretty important.

[21:49] 45 years ago, Ronald Reagan was

[21:52] the president and I thought he

[21:53] was the right man at the right

[21:56] time with the Cold War and

[21:58] whatnot but one thing he said

[21:59] that has always troubled me a

[22:00] little bit as he asked are you

[22:02] better off than you were four

[22:03] years ago.

[22:06] and I think that's a good

[22:08] question to ask. Politics does

[22:09] it all the time but we really

[22:09] should ask

[22:13] at times is your country better

[22:14] off than it was four years ago?

[22:16] Is your state better off than it

[22:18] was four years ago and I would

[22:20] just enjoin people to think

[22:22] about leaving the state and

[22:24] leaving the country because some

[22:26] of us came down here saying

[22:26] we're going to leave the state

[22:28] better than we when we got here

[22:30] and tried to do that and I would

[22:31] encourage

[22:35] everyone here to go forward. I

[22:36] may be at the other end of the

[22:38] building I may not

[22:40] somebody said my door's

[22:42] always open. I hope people

[22:44] realize that that is true but

[22:46] I hope I continue in here

[22:48] another one from northeast

[22:49] Missouri that's off unemployment

[22:52] so anyway but it's been a great

[24:04] was the crime preventionittee

[24:05] before they were combined with

[24:05] public safety

[24:07] and that's when I had a

[24:08] chance to meet the gentleman

[24:09] from Jasper

[24:12] I always appreciated

[24:16] how he ran those committees how

[24:17] he conducted himself

[24:19] and as a young legislator at the

[24:19] time

[24:20] I really

[24:24] appreciate how he moved in this

[24:26] building and how he forged

[24:28] relationships and that always

[24:30] meant something to me and I

[24:31] never told him this to his face

[24:32] but he's always been sort of a

[24:34] mentor to me and I appreciate

[24:35] his leadership and his

[24:35] friendship

[24:40] over the past seven years I am

[24:40] proud of the work that I've

[24:42] helped advance in the areas of

[24:44] public safety juvenile justice

[24:46] impaired driving child welfare

[24:48] and the official recognition of

[24:49] Black History Month in Missouri

[24:51] none of that work was

[24:52] accomplished alone

[24:54] I want to thank the Republican

[24:56] and Democrat members alike who

[24:57] worked with me over the years

[25:00] we didn't always agree and

[25:00] sometimes we disagree pretty

[25:01] strongly

[25:04] but I appreciate those who are

[25:05] willing to work with me and

[25:06] listen and pass good legislation

[25:10] as I hope to serve Kansas City

[25:12] in a new role I want to maintain

[25:14] these working relationships and

[25:15] strengthen the partnership

[25:15] between Kansas City and the

[25:16] state of Missouri

[25:19] Kansas City and the state of

[25:20] Missouri we are not adversaries

[25:22] we are partners

[25:24] and I want to strengthen that

[25:26] partnership and I look forward

[25:27] to working with many of you

[25:28] again on other issues that will

[25:29] impact Kansas City.

[25:32] I also want to thank the house

[25:34] staff. Lord knows they probably

[25:35] got tired of seeing emails from

[25:35] me

[25:38] my legislative staff and

[25:39] everyone else who worked behind

[25:40] the scenes to keep this

[25:41] institution functioning

[26:52] these are mostly heartfelt

[26:54] expressions of respect and

[26:56] admiration for my fellow members

[26:58] Well, mostly

[27:00] maybe some of them

[27:02] at least a few

[27:06] they're also great expressions

[27:08] of great respect and admiration

[27:12] for our staff that folks let's

[27:14] be patient with them especially

[27:16] you new folks coming in you've

[27:18] got to keep in mind they've got

[27:19] to start all over again every

[27:20] two years

[27:24] so we owe them a definitely a

[27:25] debt of gratitu

[27:30] and honestly for great respect

[27:31] for

[27:36] and appreciation of the

[27:38] institution that we are blessed

[27:39] with serving in

[27:41] you know the voters had enough

[27:42] confidence in us to elect us

[27:45] here and they expected some a

[27:45] lot

[27:47] some very little

[27:48] but

[27:53] we all intended to take on that

[27:56] responsibility and to represent

[27:58] them as best as we could here in

[27:59] our time.

[28:02] and what an awesome duty and

[28:03] responsibility that is

[28:08] I agree and truly concur with

[28:09] all those sentiments and I do

[28:13] truly thank our voters that

[28:16] put us here our staff and my

[28:17] fellow members

[28:20] on this day there is probably a

[28:22] cheer or two rising from some of

[28:24] the departments throughout the

[28:25] state

[28:26] well first

[28:30] for those folks it was all for a

[28:31] good cause

[28:34] I would like to and this is

[28:36] brand new because I just

[28:37] thought of it. I'd specifically

[28:37] like to

[28:42] thank the chair of the joint

[28:44] committee for allowing me the

[28:45] opportunity to say my farewells

[28:46] in a proper way to the

[28:47] Department of Transportation

[28:52] I just wish, conservation

[28:54] anddNR would have offered me the

[28:55] same opportunity

[28:58] I'm sure conservation is

[28:58] appreciative that they did not

[29:03] however, once again I thought

[29:05] and I still think that that is

[29:06] truly my duty

[29:10] to hold those accountable who we

[29:13] entrust with so much of the

[29:13] people's money

[29:16] and if I want to give advice

[29:18] which I plan to do here in a

[29:19] minute

[29:24] and that loud guffaw you heard

[29:27] over the microphone was my good

[29:28] friend from the Murphy district.

[29:30] I got one last thank you to do.

[29:34] I would like to thank my LA Josh

[29:36] roman for putting up with me for

[29:37] the time he has

[29:44] I would like to thank all thelAs

[29:46] that I ever had but the list is

[29:47] fairly exhaustive

[29:52] apparently they can always

[29:53] find something else to do other

[29:53] than work for me

[29:56] Joshua was fortunate enough he

[29:57] caught me in the last two years

[30:34] some advice to those who remain

[30:35] and those who come in in the

[30:35] future

[30:42] never forget who you are

[30:43] actually working for

[30:48] I got bad news for you. none of

[30:50] them are in this building on a

[30:51] regular basis

[30:54] and that's the way you should

[30:55] look at it folks

[30:57] there's lots of folks with

[30:59] helpful advice and you should

[30:59] look at it that way

[31:02] too often

[31:06] we have observed is that

[31:10] legislation gets passed for the

[31:12] benefit of one or at least a

[31:13] very few

[31:14] well

[31:18] if it contributes to the greater

[31:20] good, I probably have no not too

[31:21] much problem with that but too

[31:21] often we do not

[31:26] have a reason for every vote

[31:30] I have made notes through my

[31:31] entire time here

[31:35] about specific legislation and I

[31:36] had a reason for every vote

[31:40] if you do not have a reason for

[31:42] the vote you made, I would ask

[31:43] you why are you here

[31:50] And I never hold a particular

[31:52] vote against any individual even

[31:54] if they disagree with me with

[31:55] maybe a couple of exceptions

[31:58] but if you don't have a reason

[31:59] for it

[32:01] well then I'm going to hold that

[32:01] against you

[32:05] not as a member here but as a

[32:05] citizen of the state of

[32:06] Missouri.

[32:06] and

[32:11] God forbid that you would file a

[32:13] bill that you have no idea what

[32:14] it does

[32:19] I one of my biggest pet peeves

[32:21] is someone presenting a bill in

[32:22] a committee that I was chairman

[32:24] of who couldn't answer a single

[32:26] question about the bill they had

[32:30] filed not one that unfortunately

[32:31] happened pretty often

[32:36] Most of you are my friends and

[32:37] you shall continue as that

[32:41] and I know that you are

[32:44] honest and you came here for all

[32:45] the right reasons

[32:46] some of you

[32:50] unfortunately got elected to

[32:52] this job as a stepping stone to

[32:56] somewhere else. Well, OK if you

[32:57] can honestly say you did

[33:00] the people's work while you were

[33:02] here then fine I don't begrudge

[33:08] a few of you have made great

[33:12] sport of my heritage and

[33:16] certainly by voice inflections
