And thornton our community isn’t just living community isn’t just living here, we are out here working in here, we are out here working in the shifts in different areas the shifts in different areas and teaching our kids, running and teaching our kids, running small shops and keeping the city

As a council member, I wanted our council member, I wanted our resolutions we bring forward resolutions we bring forward represent the different cultural represent the different cultural heritage and more than just heritage and more than just performative.

[6:15] our roots in performative. Our roots in thornton are tied to the chicano thornton are tied to the chicano movement is tied to the metro movement is tied to the metro area. This is important because area.

[6:24] this is important because I think a lot of times we think I think a lot of times we think of hispanic heritage month and of hispanic heritage month and we’re not a monolith of hispanic we’re not a monolith of hispanic peoples. There’s tons of peoples.

[6:36] there’s tons of different people, different different people, different movements and different movements and different ethnicities in hispanic heritage ethnicities in hispanic heritage and I wanted to just kind of and I wanted to just kind of highlight chicano movement baz highlight chicano movement baz it has a huge deep history in it has a huge deep history in colorado, and I even think in colorado, and I even think in thornton being that many people thornton being that many people part of the movement in denver

[6:50] part of the movement in denver moved to the suburbs eventually moved to the suburbs eventually and took uproots here in the and took uproots here in the northern parts of the metro area northern parts of the metro area north of denver. That was built north of denver.

[7:01] that was built by working class people in its by working class people in its complex and it’s never one thing complex and it’s never one thing and came out of mixture of and came out of mixture of cultures, indigenous roots and cultures, indigenous roots and mexican roots and living here in mexican roots and living here in the u.s.

[7:09] grew out of farm the u.s. Grew out of farm workers movement fighting for workers movement fighting for dignity, fighting for families dignity, fighting for families and fair housing and kids and fair housing and kids fighting for real education in fighting for real education in their own neighborhoods. My their own neighborhoods.

[7:23] my parents being some of those parents being some of those folks who if you look at chicano folks who if you look at chicano history, many of my now history, many of my now ancestors or my elders didn’t ancestors or my elders didn’t get to learn spanish language in get to learn spanish language in the school system growing up

[7:31] the school system growing up because that was something that because that was something that was taught to the kids. They was taught to the kids. They weren’t -- you were discouraged weren’t -- you were discouraged trust worthy speaking spanish as trust worthy speaking spanish as somebody who went to school in

[7:42] somebody who went to school in the denver metro area in the 60s the denver metro area in the 60s and 70s. And so the history and 70s. And so the history alive and we’re seeing overdue alive and we’re seeing overdue recognition across denver. I recognition across denver.

[7:52] I just kind of wanted to highlight just kind of wanted to highlight a couple of things coming up. A couple of things coming up. The colorado history museum in the colorado history museum in denver has a very powerful denver has a very powerful exhibit showing the reality of exhibit showing the reality of the chicano movement in denver

[8:04] the chicano movement in denver and labor battles and fights and labor battles and fights that our people have to be seen. That our people have to be seen.

[8:25] on the campus, there’s a whole on the campus, there’s a whole working group that is putting working group that is putting together a latino history senter together a latino history senter and knowing a bit of history of and knowing a bit of history of the -- campus and I went there the -- campus and I went there and I currently attend there for and I currently attend there for teaching license certificate. Teaching license certificate.

[8:36] the -- campus, when it was the -- campus, when it was formed displaced a whole group formed displaced a whole group of working class people to build of working class people to build that campus and so it’s a good that campus and so it’s a good thing that they’re putting thing that they’re putting together a dedicated latino

[8:47] together a dedicated latino history center. That way the history center. That way the history isn’t forgotten. You history isn’t forgotten. You really can’t talk about the really can’t talk about the fight for rights for the chicano fight for rights for the chicano movement without talking about movement without talking about robin robin rodolfo corky gonzalez.

[9:04] corky rodolfo corky gonzalez. Corky fought his way up from a boxer fought his way up from a boxer and put up that fight to fight and put up that fight to fight for our people and 1966 founded for our people and 1966 founded crusade for justice right on the

[9:12] crusade for justice right on the 16th avenue and opened a school 16th avenue and opened a school for kids so they could learn for kids so they could learn their own history and organize their own history and organize the 1969 youth liberation the 1969 youth liberation conference that brought conference that brought thousands of young people

[9:23] thousands of young people together to demand change. Those together to demand change. Those struggles, they’re not just in struggles, they’re not just in the history books and shows up the history books and shows up in the local economy so just in the local economy so just going around town today, I was

[9:31] going around town today, I was talking to latino business talking to latino business owners, and it’s been difficult. Owners, and it’s been difficult.

[9:41] business slowed down a bit maybe business slowed down a bit maybe from the political climate and from the political climate and people are feeling the pinch of people are feeling the pinch of harder economic times and some harder economic times and some of the businesses have been of the businesses have been suffering and I wanted to suffering and I wanted to encourage people toll -- if you encourage people toll -- if you have a opportunity to eat out, I

[9:52] have a opportunity to eat out, I know it’s a little tough for know it’s a little tough for everybody. But put some dollars everybody. But put some dollars into the latino businesses into the latino businesses specifically, this next month specifically, this next month through the middle of october,

[10:02] through the middle of october, just to kind of recognize latino just to kind of recognize latino businesses in our community. Businesses in our community. Definitely appreciate that added definitely appreciate that added support from the community. This support from the community.

[10:17] this helps keep money in our helps keep money in our neighborhoods and helps keep neighborhoods and helps keep money in the city and gives back money in the city and gives back to the folks that make thornton to the folks that make thornton run and corky gave us the words run and corky gave us the words for his opening -- ongoing fight

[10:26] for his opening -- ongoing fight when he wrote the poem " when he wrote the poem " I am juaquin?" 1967. It’s not a I am juaquin?" 1967. It’s not a polite piece of poetry and raw polite piece of poetry and raw and honest and lays out the and honest and lays out the whole chicano experience and

[10:37] whole chicano experience and hurt, pride, labor and refusal hurt, pride, labor and refusal to be erased. To honor that to be erased. To honor that tonight, I want to read an tonight, I want to read an excerpt of the poem myself. This excerpt of the poem myself.

[10:50] this is a part of the poem and a very is a part of the poem and a very long poem called "I am long poem called "I am juaquin" and this is towards the juaquin" and this is towards the end. I have endured in the end.

[10:58] I have endured in the rugged mountains of our country rugged mountains of our country and survived toils and slavery and survived toils and slavery of the fields. I have existed in of the fields. I have existed in the body of the city and the the body of the city and the suburbs of bigotry and minds of suburbs of bigotry and minds of social snobbery and prisons of social snobbery and prisons of anti-genx and exploitation and

[11:12] anti-genx and exploitation and in the fierce heat of racial in the fierce heat of racial hatred and now the trumpet hatred and now the trumpet sounds and the music of the sounds and the music of the people stirs and the revolution, people stirs and the revolution, like a sleeping giant, it slowly

[11:23] like a sleeping giant, it slowly rears its head to the sound of rears its head to the sound of trampling feet and clam moraying trampling feet and clam moraying voices and mariachi and smell of voices and mariachi and smell of chili verde and soft brown eyes chili verde and soft brown eyes of expectation for a better

[11:36] of expectation for a better life. In the fertile farmlands life. In the fertile farmlands in the barren plains and in the barren plains and villages and we start to move. Villages and we start to move.

[11:52] mexican know, espanol or latino, mexican know, espanol or latino, chicano, whatever I call myself, chicano, whatever I call myself, I look the same and sound the I look the same and sound the same. I cry and I’m the massing same.

[12:36] we do it. You can literally see it all you can literally see it all around town. For example, the around town. For example, the sculpture resilience and bloom, sculpture resilience and bloom, it’s been up for a couple of it’s been up for a couple of years now.

[12:47] it was put in there years now. It was put in there at pecos park on the west side at pecos park on the west side and saw the artist local artist, and saw the artist local artist, it’s a perfect example of this. It’s a perfect example of this.

[12:58] some call the low rider cactus some call the low rider cactus and it’s covered in chicano and it’s covered in chicano murals like on a low rider. But murals like on a low rider.

[13:10] but it’s a cool and meaningful nod it’s a cool and meaningful nod to the hispanic history here in to the hispanic history here in thornton and glad that thornton thornton and glad that thornton has commit to that and that we has commit to that and that we have a sculpture with that have a sculpture with that intention. You can also see this intention.

[13:19] you can also see this commitment around city events commitment around city events for example and we’ve been for example and we’ve been bringing in local hispanic bringing in local hispanic groups like chicano heat for groups like chicano heat for music events and thornton events music events and thornton events we had we had [speaking non-english language] [speaking non-english language] and played at thornton fest and

[13:32] and played at thornton fest and they had a whole lot of energy, they had a whole lot of energy, mexican-style music. We do mexican-style music. We do annual dia de- los muertos and annual dia de- los muertos and if you haven’t been there. I if you haven’t been there. I recommend checking it out.

[14:23] small business owners have and it’s really cool we provide that it’s really cool we provide that parody in spanish. There’s a ton parody in spanish. There’s a ton of spanish speaking businesses of spanish speaking businesses around ward 1. If you haven’t -- around ward 1.

[56:08] it’s a the last council meeting. It’s a great reminder how the heart of great reminder how the heart of the -- how big the heart of the the -- how big the heart of the community really is. The community really is.

[56:22] the renallal side of things one big renallal side of things one big piece was power head colorado piece was power head colorado community engagement program, community engagement program, which is another grant funded by which is another grant funded by the large power head colorado the large power head colorado grant. I will say there’s some grant.

[57:00] I will say there’s some frustration towards rtd about frustration towards rtd about the ambassador program rollout, the ambassador program rollout, which felt to many of the which felt to many of the members quick and chaotic and members quick and chaotic and it’s a great start to the whole it’s a great start to the whole process. Thornton does have one existing data does have one existing data center, which is operated here center, which is operated here for several years, and the for several years, and the moratorium does not affect its
