[10:04] the work plan and a proposed meeting schedule

[10:07] for the next six months.

[10:10] You have seen this before.

[10:11] We did go through this practice in January,

[10:13] but I wanted to revisit with you.

[10:14] And so we could review what we've got coming up.

[10:20] I'm sorry.

[10:21] It's a little bit blurry, folks.

[10:23] I'm sorry about that.

[10:25] So to give everybody a little bit

[10:26] of background, the Public Art Advisory Commission,

[10:30] or as what I'll call it this evening,

[10:32] the Commission uses a work plan as a working document

[10:35] to help track projects and create your budget.

[10:39] All of these funds used for public art

[10:41] are held in a public art special revenue fund.

[10:44] These funds are dedicated to the acquisition, installation,

[10:48] lease, and maintenance of public art through the commission.

[10:52] There's not a specific stream of public art funding.

[10:55] All of the budget is supported by the town's general fund,

[10:59] unless a specific grant is sought after and awarded.

[11:03] The town budget was adopted on June 16, 2025.

[11:09] And due to budget cuts in every town department,

[11:13] not every item submitted through the Public Art Advisory

[11:16] Commission budget was funded.

[11:18] We've updated this work plan to show our actual expenses

[11:22] for the '25/'26 fiscal year.

[11:26] You can see here there's three columns on the left-hand side.

[11:29] The first green one is the budget that was approved

[11:32] for '25/'26, which we just finished out that year in June.

[11:37] But right next to that was what was proposed by the Commission.

[11:40] So you can see that we really did have to make some cuts.

[11:44] And what you see on the actual expenses is what we spent.

[11:48] Now if the Commission remembers, at the top there,

[11:52] you can see you have $5,000 for the Annual Mural Program.

[11:55] But the Commission did decide that our utility boxes were

[11:59] in really good shape, and we were still waiting

[12:01] for the Caltrans box approval.

[12:05] And so we didn't move forward with that $5,000 in this last

[12:08] fiscal year.

[12:09] The next item there on the actual expenses is the $2,133

[12:14] spent.

[12:15] That SMART Station installation is our photo contest.

[12:18] So that was the printing of the photos

[12:20] that the commission recommended to council.

[12:23] Council actually approved that.

[12:25] We printed those photos and we hung those

[12:27] along the SMART Station fence.

[12:29] And then the next item you see is the $2,500 that was spent.

[12:36] This was for the Bruce Johnson sculpture lease payment.

[12:40] And then right above that, you can

[12:43] see the youth banners is crossed out.

[12:46] We rolled that forward into this year.

[12:49] We're actually still waiting for our third quote

[12:52] on printing of those banners.

[12:53] We have to collect three quotes.

[12:56] So we've rolled that forward into this current fiscal year

[12:58] that we're in, and we're going to have

[13:00] that project done this year.

[13:02] And let's see.

[13:03] Down below, you can see annual project total-- so the total,

[13:06] $4,633.

[13:09] And then you see $3,689.

[13:12] That was site improvements.

[13:13] So that was site improvements to Big Joe.

[13:16] We actually had to install some lights there, according

[13:19] to that contract that we have.

[13:23] And then the $4,947, that was other expenses.

[13:28] We had some legal fees associated with the contract

[13:33] that we did for the Bruce Johnson sculpture

[13:35] and also the contract or agreement

[13:37] that we did with LBC for that sculpture that just went up.

[13:44] And you can see there, the $13,268 is the total

[13:48] of the $30,000.

[13:50] So during these hard times, it really is nice to keep it tight

[13:54] and show some savings.

[13:56] And I can see that we did that here.

[13:58] And those are the dollars we closed in June fiscal year.

[14:03] And then moving forward to this fiscal year,

[14:05] you can see that we do have the $5,000 for the murals

[14:21] payment.

[14:28] And so you'll see on this next page, this tentative plan.

[14:35] So for this plan, staff is suggesting-- of course,

[14:44] And then September 23rd, we will be bringing an update

[14:49] on the financial sustainability work that this Commission was

[14:53] invited to, a workshop back in May.

[14:57] And so we'll have an update in the form of a report

[15:00] out to the Commission, as well as

[15:02] a report to the Commission to plan for utility box painting

[15:07] or Connex box murals, which I know

[15:09] has been a topic of discussion.

[15:11] So staff's going to pull together

[15:13] some ideas for the Commission and some timelines,

[15:15] and present it in September.

[15:18] And then staff's proposing that October be canceled,

[15:21] and then a special meeting be called in November.

[15:25] That normal day and time for November

[15:28] is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

[15:30] We weren't sure about the availability,

[15:33] so we do have a couple meeting dates to propose

[15:37] to the Commission this evening, and then the December meeting

[15:41] canceled.

[15:41] If the Commission recalls, we would usually

[15:43] cancel December and reschedule November,

[15:46] and do a special meeting and combine those.

[15:50] I think our regular meeting day in December falls right after

[15:55] Christmas or right around there, in between Christmas and New

[15:57] Year's.

[21:30] was a bummer for the people that participated.

[21:34] Because they really want the community

[21:35] to come to see real professional art in their studios.

[21:41] And it's really thrilling for the artists and the community

[21:45] to participate.

[21:50] It's in October, the first two weekends in October.

[21:54] I will be participating, but because of the lack of turnout

[21:58] and I had it in my backyard, I'm moving mine

[22:01] to a gallery in Petaluma.

[28:39] of our Cali design challenge.

[28:45] We went through the entire cycle of starting out from iteration

[28:52] and thinking about, what could we

[28:55] do to improve our Cali campus?

[28:57] Students went through the empathy phase

[29:00] of interviewing people and finding out the best

[29:04] way to make Cali art and community more

[29:09] visible on campus.

[29:11] Students designed prototypes both through measurement,

[29:17] photography, sketching, and then digital prototypes

[29:24] as well using concept art, using AI.

[29:27] They created proposals that they then presented

[29:32] to a panel of community members and got feedback.

[29:38] And then they worked with the Caleb McPhail

[29:45] from the high school, who is the construction

[29:50] teacher at the high school.

[29:51] And students work, both students who are

[29:53] in the program or designers.

[29:54] But we also had students who just

[29:56] came on for the construction phase, who

[29:57] helped build the students' projects that they had imagined.

[30:02] And so each of the projects was built. One of them

[30:09] has been installed in the upper campus.

[30:11] Students built a trellis and bench,

[30:14] and then they painted a mural.

[30:18] Most of the mural is complete.

[30:19] There's a little detail to be added in.

[30:24] One of our students, they did a mural.

[30:27] Unfortunately, the mural, for whatever reason,

[30:30] in that same conditions, that particular mural

[30:35] decided to warp.

[30:36] Oh.

[30:37] And so we are going to start over in the fall,

[30:41] but not as a mural.

[30:42] We realized what we actually want

[30:45] is vinyl to be placed onto a whiteboard,

[30:50] because the student's vision is actually something that

[30:54] can have magnets placed on it.

[30:57] So we had a whiteboard donated, and we have in our budget

[31:01] to have the student's artwork printed onto vinyl.

[31:05] So we're going to have that done,

[31:07] and that's going to be then mounted in the preschool and TK

[31:12] yard.

[31:16] And another one was students created a rainbow mural

[31:20] and they built a bench.

[31:21] And so those two things are going

[31:22] to be installed in the fall.

[31:25] But what was so exciting was every single part of it,

[31:30] we as adults got to be the guides on the side.

[31:33] We were the thinking partners.

[31:35] We were not the lead designers.

[31:37] We were not the lead of any part of it.

[31:41] Everything came from the students.

[31:43] When the students wanted to create,

[31:45] we'd say, OK, well, what's your thought here?

[31:50] Or we'd ask questions like, OK, well, how big is that?

[31:53] Well, let's go look at that.

[31:55] Is that really how tall you think it is.

[31:56] I'm this tall.

[31:58] How tall do you think that actually is?

[32:01] A student said, well, I think I want this to be 13 feet tall.

[32:05] And I said, well, how tall are you?

[32:07] Let's think about how tall is the preschooler.

[32:12] It was really good.

[32:12] It was good, actual design thinking,

[32:15] that really good critical thinking.

[32:17] We also brought in high schoolers

[32:19] to work with students as well, side by side.

[32:22] I think probably for me, the most exciting thing

[32:24] was we became what was called cool detention.

[32:30] Was we brought in students who, when they finished

[32:35] the first hour of their school detention

[32:39] for whatever they had done that they had earned detention,

[32:42] they could come over and help with the design projects

[32:46] as construction people.

[32:49] Students, after that, were asking to come.

[32:51] They said, well, I finished detention,

[32:52] but can I stay for two more hours?

[32:54] I love this.

[32:55] And I had kids running up to me all week long asking,

[32:59] when is that next building thing?

[33:00] It is so cool.

[33:02] Where is that cool guy who builds stuff?

[33:04] Can I build with him?

[33:05] And we got kids who felt disenfranchised,

[33:10] who, because of this project, felt excited.

[33:15] We put every single kid who participated,

[33:16] even if they participated for 20 minutes on this project--

[33:19] we put their names at open house.

[33:22] And they were running up to it and showing their parents

[33:24] that there's my name.

[33:25] I did something with this.

[33:27] So as a result, the program is going

[33:31] to be not in this exact iteration,

[33:34] but it's going to be expanded into a full-time class

[33:37] for sixth graders in the fall.

[41:59] was asked to rank recreation service categories

[42:04] and their level of benefit.

[42:11] level.

[42:12] So we've been working on this over the last few months,

[42:16] and we have tentatively scheduled to bring forward

[42:18] a report to the Commission and then
