[1:27] elementary fun fair. They're selling tickets for all of our

[1:30] rides here. All the proceeds support the wide oak PFC. This is

[1:34] something we've been doing for years. It helps support their after school activities. All

[1:38] of their art classes or music classes. So it's a great way to come have fun while also supporting

[1:43] a great cause. Quick question of clarification. White Oaks, PFC. What is the PFC stand for? It's

[1:50] not PFC hangs is it? Absolutely. PFC stands for Parent Faculty Club. So it's all the parents

[1:58] that volunteer and help make all the fun things happen at school. Speaking of fun things, you look

[2:03] around here. It's already hustling and bustling. We got people of all ages, the young,

[2:07] the young at heart, all here, ready to celebrate West Lake Village and all the fall has to

[2:12] offer. Can you let some of our viewers at home who are like halfway off the couch, but not halfway

[2:16] into their cars yet? They're self-driving. You should be here by now. What do people have to look

[2:21] forward to when they come here to the city celebration? Absolutely. Besides all these fantastic carnival

[2:26] rides, we also have food trucks. We've got a beer and wine garden in the back. We've got some

[2:31] local breweries, 14 cannons, five threads, great local beer, serving in the back patio.

[2:38] We've got a photo booth, free unlimited photos, a mobile tide pool, which is super cool.

[2:43] You get to come and touch some marine creatures, learn about them, what else do we have?

[2:48] I saw a whole bunch, oh, I'm amplified, I see a whole bunch of food options right now.

[2:54] I see hot dogs, I see Japanese food, I see I see everything, what are you most looking

[3:01] to put in your belly. Oh my gosh, I actually just went and got it. I went and got a shaved ice from

[3:06] Kona Ice. But I will be sampling all the food trucks today because they're all fantastic.

[3:11] Now what is the hardest part about planning an event of this magnitude? I know a lot goes into this.

[3:17] That's a great question. It's probably thinking about every little thing that every attendee

[3:24] could want in an event and making sure catering to all the different demographics, age-wise.

[3:30] Yeah, yeah, exactly, literally, so that's probably it, but I love it and it's so much fun.

[15:06] are contributing to our community by attending. Sure. By coming here today, you're helping to raise funds for the

[15:13] parent faculty, Club of White Oak Elementary School. And it's also a great way to meet other people in the

[15:19] neighborhood and build some community and support a good cause. And how long have you been a part of

[15:26] said BFC. Oh, I've been a part of the BFC for 60 years. This is my first year at the director

[15:31] of community relations though. Wonderful. And what are the, what are the hurdles and joys

[15:37] to implementing an event of this magnitude? It's fantastic. And I can only imagine getting

[15:42] better as the night goes on. I'd say the biggest hurdle is getting people to help. So volunteers,

[15:51] Businesses around this area are super generous and really quick to jump in, which is great.

[15:58] So if anyone has a lot of free time, they're welcome to always help come and volunteer.

[16:03] But if you're at home right now, the biggest hurdle is getting people here.

[17:24] And so events like this today are imperative to bringing everyone back together and bringing the joy in the smiles and the hearts and minds to not just the white oak elementary community, but West Lake Village at large.

[55:00] I went to Roosevelt High School and see how to Washington. And the guy is a legend there. And he changed my life. I knew that after I was in his class that I wanted to do music. I wanted to be a teacher that early. So it's kind of nice because I knew what I wanted to do early on in my life. So it was never like cash. What am I going to do? I always kind of knew. So I felt kind of lucky that way. Is it surreal now that there's a very good chance that what your teacher at Roosevelt did for you, you have done for other students in the domino effect thereof?

[1:08:00] Yeah, it's I mean the market. I mean if you follow the real estate market or all you know that yet last 18 months has been like nothing we've ever seen

[1:08:06] So a lot of it's been setting expectations for buyers

[1:08:09] because it's tough out there.

[1:08:10] First time buyers, people coming into the community,

[1:08:13] it's very difficult so you have to be aggressive.

[1:08:15] And we've been working hard to get our clients into homes.

[1:08:19] And then from the selling standpoint,

[1:08:22] you're doing it in a market like we've never seen.

[1:08:23] So it's really just keeping a post on it

[1:08:26] and just working closely with every client

[1:08:29] and doing everything we can.

[1:08:31] And a lot of it is to our basic connections

[1:08:34] in the community with other agents and having a good reputation and helps, you know, it helps

[1:08:39] our clients.

[1:08:40] It really does.

[1:08:40] It gets passed on to the client.

[1:08:42] So that's what we really strive to do is just, you know, everything's done to the highest

[1:08:46] level.

[1:08:48] I'd say on that too, communication has never been higher, you know, people want to know what's

[1:08:53] going on and what, a lot of answers to questions and we've just been made ourselves, making

[1:08:59] ourselves available to a much higher extent these days because it's just highly competitive

[1:09:04] out there and both sellers and buyers are they've got a lot to deal with so and that's what

[1:09:14] It sounds like an obvious question but yeah look look look look look we're at right now the

[1:09:18] community and you know we both grew up in the area like I said but over the last 20 25 years

[2:10:37] I want to ask you first about the Wesley community foundation because it's very important that we

[2:10:43] You know on a night like tonight when all this great amazing things are happening that we really focus on the little things that make our community so great

[2:10:49] So please the floor is yours to address that well the West like village foundations community foundation

[2:10:54] It's a non-profit charitable foundation.

[2:10:57] We raised money throughout the year to give scholarships to high school seniors as they head

[2:11:01] on to college and other things and you don't have to be graded at academics, but that

[2:11:05] you can get scholarship for academics, but also if you're involved in your community, you

[2:11:08] go to music, theater, things like that and we give out, you know, $5,000, $10,000 a year

[2:11:14] in scholarships and how did the beer gotten, morning gotten in the back there, is raising money

[2:11:19] for the West Lake Village Community Foundation.

[2:11:20] So, I wanted to share that with everybody, something we do every year, and we enjoy it, and it's part of the event.

[2:11:27] So, it's fantastic. And what in your mind, what in your mind, and what in your mind makes West Lake Village the place to be?

[2:11:37] I know you, you know, last time I interviewed you, you know, yeah, I had heard of, you know, your path and how you made it here and how happy you were and we are as you have you here.

[2:11:48] But what makes West Lake Village that special is that the local businesses and the local people?

[2:11:54] Obviously it's important to support our local businesses now and more than ever.

[2:11:58] Talk to me about that.

[2:12:00] Well, you know, it's, you know, COVID has been so hot on everybody.

[2:12:03] You know, families, kids, but also our local businesses, restaurants in particular.

[2:12:07] So we are on a campaign constantly promoting our local businesses to get out of the shop local.

[2:12:12] We've got small little businesses here, little restaurants, get out of the shop local,

[2:12:17] support the local folks and you know you said what's special about what's like

[2:12:21] villages the people you said it's the people it is the people it's the residents

[2:12:24] that live here in love this city to small middle village and they care about one

[2:12:28] another and so we care about the local business community too so let's get out and

[2:12:32] shop local. It's really I don't know about you but this past year and a half for me has

[2:12:39] really been a time to you know we're been forced to reflect we even forced to stay home

[2:12:44] force to do things and in some ways we have slow down so talk to you about talking

[2:12:50] about slowing down talk to you about you know down another thing that we're

[2:12:54] promoting a lot of slow down in our hometown you know oh I love the rhyme is

[2:12:59] that patent pending slow down in our hometown we sure do oh my gosh are I

[2:13:04] need to get a lower back tattoo or that you know it's West Lake village it's a

[2:13:08] small community right it's a neighborhood town and people love to walk here they

[2:13:12] to ride bikes, and we want people to just slow down, you know, we got a little bit of

[2:13:18] a problem, too many people speeding on our streets, and that's us, you know, that's the

[2:13:22] people that work and live here. So we ask everybody to slow down and join the village and

[2:13:26] enjoy life, but it's just slow down a little bit. No, it's one of those things that

[2:13:33] it's very easy for us to tell other people to do that. Like, you know, you're driving along

[2:13:39] And then you yell at someone because they're yelling at someone and then all of a sudden you're like oh, what have I done to realize it might be you

[2:13:45] Yeah, I know and that that's right, and so we it's slow down as for all of us, right just to just to be aware to a pedestrian cyclist

[2:13:53] And especially in COVID with a lot of people being at home

[2:13:55] So there's a lot more people actually walking around the street

[2:13:58] So we need to all but just be a little bit more aware and then just slow down a little bit as you look at this, you know

[2:14:04] This landscape of happy people on rides and eating and walking around and just joy and music and truly a fair, what feelings come to light and what makes you most optimistic for the year going forward and how are you feeling about the end of this year and then 2022. Can you believe that your 2022 is coming?

[2:14:28] I know it's gone so fast. Yeah, that's a great question. You know, it's a sense of community. I think it's what gives me optimism

[2:14:35] What I love about West Lake village. At first on my came here, the first time I came here actually was at this event

[2:14:40] Yeah, in 2018 before I became the city manager. Oh, I'm going to check out West Lake village to see what what it's like

[2:14:46] And I came to this event and there's just a beautiful sense of community among, you know, families, kids, parents, the local

[2:14:52] Elementary School we're fundraising for that tonight

[2:14:55] Um, so that's what gives me sort of the hope about the future and what does it mean for you to put on event?

[2:15:00] With people again. This isn't a Zoom box. This isn't a Brady Blunch. This is like real humans, like here, you know, what does that mean? To the city. It is a little weird, right? But people are so hungry for it. We're very social beings as people. And we need to be able to connect with our neighbors and our friends. And so I love it. It's just a beautiful thing and I'm happy we're doing it.
