We have a slate of planning Commission --

we have our annual planning commission officer elections.

We have a chair, a vice chair and a secretary.

We will first hear from the nominating >> Madam

chair, the nominating committee which consists of me
[2:20]
and Jerry Ford put together a slate of nominees.
[2:26]
Melissa Jones for chair, Susanna Rinhart for vice chair
[2:34]
And Blayne Keesee for Secretary.

Mr. Ford come I believe you have a report on the Montgomery
[3:19]
County Planning Commission?
[3:22]
>> The Planning Commission met on the 19th and as a spoiler
[3:26]
alert, there were no public hearings.
[3:28]
What was interesting is the first thing is since they had
[3:31]
time, the representative for the Virginia Cooperative Extension
[3:35]
gave a very extensive presentation about their role
[3:38]
in the community as communities everywhere.
[3:44]
I recommend everyone go back and look at that first 15 minutes
[3:51]
because it was a very good presentation.
[3:52]
And they did welcome a new member
[3:56]
to the Planning Commission.
[3:58]
I forget the gentleman previously
[4:00]
who had retired after maybe 20 years of service
[4:03]
on the Planning Commission.
[4:04]
Then what they did is they moved into a work session
[4:08]
and there are two items they worked on.
[4:11]
One is a housing development in the eastern part of the county
[4:14]
down there really by the eastern Montgomery School.
[4:19]
Our good friend that we see often
[4:21]
come to the hardest working men in the land use,
[4:24]
Steve Simons was there for that, then
[4:27]
that was followed by a smaller use request that
[4:30]
is more here on prices fork road heading out
[4:35]
towards Peppers Ferry Road.
[4:36]
Someone wants to convert some of that land
[4:38]
and build actually a wrestling facility.
[4:41]
Training and whatnot.
[4:43]
So they did their work session on that, at which point
[4:49]
they exited their work session and then they
[4:51]
did just what we do tonight where
[4:55]
they did their little reports so that was that.
[4:58]

What actually really cracked me up

is that the chair of the Planning Commission

introduced to the new person and said
[5:17]
that she was a graduate of UVA wise
[5:20]
and then he proceeded to say, which
[5:22]
is not how we refer to our dear neighbors in Charlottesville.
[5:29]
UVA unwise.
[5:34]

So we do not have any pending public hearing items so staff

would recommend canceling the work session on September 15th,

if that would be the pleasure of the Planning commission,
[6:10]
and then also I did want to let you know that our consultant
[6:15]
that is doing the Recode Blacksburg process will be
[6:19]
in town on October 6th and they would like to have a work
[6:23]
session.
[6:24]
That will be the night of a regular meeting.
[6:26]
We anticipate it being a shorter meeting,
[6:29]
so I believe that both items could be scheduled with plenty
[6:33]
of time on the same evening.
[6:35]
So I just wanted to make you all aware of that.
[6:38]
Also coming I had sent out an email
[6:41]
about the comprehensive plan update
[6:43]
and do encourage you all to take a look at the survey
[6:45]
and pass that on as you can two others in the community.
[6:50]
And then if you have any ideas for staff for public engagement,
[6:56]
please let myself or may gold know,
[6:59]
and we are actively looking for places
[7:02]
to go out and kind of meet the community where
[7:05]
they are at events and such.
[7:07]
As they happen this fall and to next spring.

>> Yes, and then we will have normal kind of public engagement
[7:21]
sessions either here or at the community center.
[7:27]
But we do want to make more effort, additional effort.

I think as we have in the past.

It will be conscious of okay, where
[7:39]
are people gathering that we can take advantage of where
[7:41]
they already are and try to gather some feedback that way
[7:45]

Does Town Council have a report?

>> Today at our work session we had the final presentation
[7:59]
on our community branding which if we look at the spring,
[8:02]
as we have talked about, Blacksburg is going to begin
[8:05]
rolling out the new branding that has been worked on.
[8:08]
Now that this is complete, our dated website
[8:13]
we'll move forward with getting that updated and improved.
[8:16]
There is a picture of that.
[8:19]
Also, we had an update about the Arpa funding,
[8:22]
the American Rescue Plan Act funding
[8:24]
because we are coming up on the three years
[8:26]
to spend it from today we had the Community Foundation and RV
[8:31]
presented on their strengthening Blacksburg's child care
[8:35]
workforce.
[8:35]
It was a great presentation.
[8:37]
I think it has made a lot of good efforts
[8:42]
and we can move forward from there.
[8:45]
I was very excited to hear them and then
[8:48]
we also had live, work and grow, who
[8:51]
helped with the Food Security Network presentation and we
[8:54]
heard about all the ways trying to get food to everyone
[8:58]
and that equally was inspiring and good to hear.
