[38:56] you to Vanessa for inviting me Next slide please. I

[39:01] Wanted to start with a definition Uh for tactile locking

[39:06] surface indicators or twistees TWSIs Uh... They are a special

[39:11] kind of paver that conveys Information about what's going on

[39:15] on the ground in front of you via texture indicationally

[39:18] sound And there are two types Um or warning twisties

[39:22] Which are truncated domes Um, that you find often that

[39:25] For example The corners of intersections Um, and then directional

[39:28] disease Which give you a path to follow These are

[39:31] kind of three or four parallel lines That you can

[39:34] follow to get from point A to point B Next

[39:36] slide please. This slide gives Um... Two examples from Ottawa

[39:41] Where I live Uh The first shows a training platform

[39:45] And you can see the truncated domes The attention twisties

[39:48] along the platform Edge to warn you that you are

[39:50] at the edge And then a line of directional twisties

[39:53] going down the platform Um They lead you from the

[39:56] elevator Which is behind me along the platform To get

[39:59] on the train on my other Uh picture It is

[40:02] an intersection And I have Um, there are truncated dome

[40:07] Attention Tweezies at the edge of the bike path and

[40:11] travel Um traffic And then there is a line of

[40:14] direction of Twizzies Leaving you through this intersection This is

[40:17] a little bit of a complicated one Uh Next slide

[40:20] please. Um So my next slide Um is a picture

[40:25] that was sent to me about of Queen Street in

[40:29] Brampton. Um, on this slide Um we have Um... The

[40:34] sidewalk and the bike path And there has been used

[40:37] to demarcate between the sidewalk and the bike path A

[40:40] line of directional twisties I can tell you as a

[40:43] white Kane user I would follow this line And clip

[40:47] The garbage can that is right beside the twisties I

[40:49] would hit Um... The lamp posts, all of which have

[40:52] been planted Right in the middle of this line Uh...

[40:55] Rather than being a useful way to demarcate between Where

[40:59] the fliedwalk is and where the bike path is... Um...

[41:02] This This tells me there's a line to follow And

[41:04] it's going to walk me into all of the Street

[41:06] furniture Uh... Which obviously is not very good for safety

[41:11] Next slide Please. Um On this slide I have a

[41:16] picture Um... Highlighting a pilot project Which the city of

[41:19] Ottawa Um... Has done And normally you would have a

[41:24] half height curb between a bike path and a sidewalk

[41:26] Um... On this slide I have a picture of Uh

[41:29] This is Mackenzie King Bridge And due to the way

[41:31] The bridge is built If they can't do that that

[41:33] way So they have... Bypass and the sidewalk are the

[41:37] same level Uh... And but between them They have this

[41:39] line of tactile walking circuits indicators that are this crosshatch

[41:44] pattern So they're different from the Attention Tweezies Which are

[41:48] the truncated dome And from the directional Twizies Which are

[41:51] You know The going in a straight line So if

[41:53] I feel these with my cane I know it's not

[41:56] The warning that there's a drop - off or a

[41:59] traffic Um... On the other side And I know it's

[42:02] not Aligned to follow I know it's something else And

[42:05] so in this case It's The other side is The

[42:08] bike path Be careful I wanted to show you this

[42:11] Because this could be a potential solution for what's going

[42:15] on Um... In Brampton... On Queen Street Uh... And I

[42:19] would encourage you to Your City Council and staff to

[42:23] reach out to staff at the City of Ottawa This

[42:26] was a project that we did in conjunction The city

[42:30] of Ottawa Consulted with members of the Blind Community Not

[42:34] just myself at CNIB But others who use white canes

[42:37] and guide dogs Um to make sure that they had

[42:39] come up with something That would be distinct Uh in

[42:44] cane detectable and wouldn't get confused Uh, uh, one of

[42:47] the other types of walking Surf - fit indicators Next

[42:51] slide Please. Uh My final slide is One final example

[42:57] Uh... This shows... Um... Where I work Uh... The Property

[43:02] Manager used The Directional Twizies to build A to do

[43:07] a path along the sidewalk So you could follow The

[43:10] path along sidewalk And nowhere You're going Then COVID happened

[43:13] And this restaurant built a patio right over top of

[43:16] The directional walking surface indicators Um, and so I have

[43:20] two pictures The first picture is from Before They before

[43:24] they fixed it of me Uh, walking into The Pattier

[43:28] Wall with my white cane Um... Following that path Uh...

[43:31] In this case What the property management did was They

[43:36] took out the directional Twittes and put a square of

[43:40] truncated domes Um... As a sort of Attention This path

[43:45] is ending Um... So when I follow it with my

[43:47] white cane And that's what Shown in this second picture

[43:50] on the slide Um... I know that's where The path

[43:53] ends and that I can no longer keep going in

[43:57] that straight line In this case I have to walk

[43:58] around The patio to find The path on the other

[44:01] side Uh... This could be something... Um... Was relatively easy

[44:07] It seems for land The property manager to fix this

[44:11] by simply replacing the Theresies with pavers Um... And putting

[44:15] a new one in. They didn't have to do a

[44:17] whole bunch of digging up or anything Um, pretty easy

[44:19] Fix to make it a little more safer Um, next

[44:22] slide Please. Um. This is Just My final slide to

[44:26] say Thank you once again for inviting me I hope

[45:02] that you can make them as accessible for people Who

[45:05] are blind to death blinder have low vision as possible?

[46:33] Ottawa Um So I haven't actually used transit and Brampton

[46:36] yet Um Vanessa reached out to The CNIB Entemi Cause

[46:41] like I said In Ottawa They use these directional Tweezies

[46:45] And has spent a lot of time figuring out Especially

[46:47] the demarcation between sidewalks and bike paths In a way

[46:51] that is going to keep cyclists safe and keep pedestrian

[46:54] safe and keep Those of us who are white Kane

[46:57] users from wandering into the cycle path by accident. Okay

[47:02] I was wondering if there was a requirement Or if

[47:05] it would be Value - wide of then those same

[47:09] pathways in the marks for people who may have to

[47:12] get on and off the bus So yeah. I do

[47:16] know that Um in clearing our path There is a

[47:19] section on bus stops and bustations Um, and so it

[47:23] does give some recommendations there I don't remember if it

[47:26] talks about tactile We're walking surface indicators with regards to

[47:30] breast Aspecifically But that would be a good place to

[48:18] that Uh Chowdry Transportation Policy Planner regarding Complete Street Standards

[48:24] Upgrade. Provided You have the floor An apologised for the

[48:29] name I'm really sorry. So it's Rowe The Cha -

[48:33] 3 But nice to meet everyone Um Thank you. And

[48:39] I guess I'll get started then Yes Um So I'm

[48:42] a transportation planner at the city And my group Transportation

[48:45] planning is part of Integrated City Planning under planning building

[48:49] and growth management as Transportation Planners We are responsible for

[48:53] guiding the development of transportation infrastructure services And policies to

[48:59] meet Brampton's Transportation and mobility needs. Next slide please.

[49:09] And to guide that development We have been working on

[49:12] the city's transportation Master Plan also known as the Brampton

[49:15] Mobility Plan or the BMP The BMPs The City's long

[49:19] - term strategy for transportation infrastructure and initiatives That will

[49:23] guide future investments to support growth in the city The

[49:26] mobility plan was endorsed by counseling September 2025 along with

[49:31] some more chair targets and a number of infrastructure projects

[49:33] There is a list of action Items in the BMP

[49:37] to support the physical infrastructure One of these items speaks

[49:41] to updating the city's design standards to reflect complete streets

[49:45] guidance. Next slide please. So what does that all mean.

[49:51] Design standards are used by planners and engineers to essentially

[49:57] plan and build roadways They set out The physical dimensions

[50:01] and arrangement of the roadway travelings and boulevard space When

[50:05] undertaking Municipal road construction and development projects within Brampton Contractors

[50:11] and developers are required to adhere to city of Brampton

[50:14] Standard drawings So what's currently shown on screen is our

[50:18] existing roadway standard And I've taken the more technical engineering

[50:21] drawing in the background and shown it in the figure

[50:24] The best way to visualize this would be to think

[50:27] of it as a slice of the roadway And we

[50:30] can see left to right There's the tree that's shown

[50:34] in the technical drawing in the figure Lamp post sidewalk

[50:39] through travel lanes and median And then the same mirrored

[50:43] on the other side And this is what we would

[50:45] use as a starting point for any major road project

[50:48] Um... And this is just an example But the roadway

[50:53] with would change depending on what kind of road it

[50:55] is If it's a main road or if it's a

[50:57] local road Our current standards are outdated and have a

[51:00] vehicle focus can tell by the pavement with allocated in

[51:08] our existing standards And with this standard update What we

[51:12] hope to do is update the technical guidance to ensure

[51:14] that all modes of transportation Special vulnerable users such as

[51:18] pedestrians and cyclists are given adequate Dedicated space that is

[51:22] safe in the roadway alongside the vehicles. Next slide please.

[51:29] And that's where the complete streets piece comes in The

[51:32] project has focused on complete streets and complete streets are

[51:36] essentially Streets that are designed to be safe for all

[51:38] users and should accommodate for all people of all ages

[51:41] and abilities by balancing the competing demands for corridor space

[51:45] Complete streets include dedicated space for pedestrian cyclists and transit

[51:49] vehicles and focus on placemaking through inclusion of green space

[51:53] Streetscaping and other urban design features to make Uh, uh,

[51:57] make the street feel more like a place rather than

[52:00] just a convait for a movement. And they are typically

[52:04] context - sensitive and support the land use around them

[52:07] So not every street would look the same For instance,

[52:09] a neighbourhood street would single - family homes would look

[52:12] very different than a downtown street with retail frontage in

[52:16] an intensification area And are updated design standards would reflect

[52:20] the context of the different land uses in Brampton. Next

[52:25] slide please. So this is a list of standards that

[52:29] we're operating through this project I'm gonna go through all

[52:32] of them But what I want to highlight is that

[52:35] in addition to the cross - section standard as I

[52:38] showed earlier We are also updating intersection standards. Next slide

[52:43] please. So this is an example of one of our

[52:50] proposed standards It's still in draft But in comparison to

[52:54] the existing standard There is wider sidewalk space, a dedicated

[52:57] planting and furnishing zone dedicated cycle tracks with buffers from

[53:01] The travel lane And this exempt particularly would be applied

[53:05] to Jason to a commercial or industrial land use such

[53:08] as torboom road or kennedied road through commercial areas And

[53:13] we received feedback from our accessibility office That we need

[53:17] to review the guidance on how to approach a separation

[53:19] between cycle tracks and sidewalks through this exercise. For all

[53:25] new standards that we are proposing We do have the

[53:28] planting and furnishing zone situated between the pedestrian and cycling

[53:32] facilities However we understand that these are the ideal scenarios

[53:37] And we may not always be able to achieve the

[53:41] required with to include a full planting and furnishing zone

[53:45] Especially during retrofit projects or projects with constrained space So

[53:49] we have been reviewing what Other jurisdictions are doing and

[53:52] what to include for guidance in the situation where the

[53:56] cycle tech is right adjacent to the sidewalk and a

[54:00] planting information zone cannot be accommodated. Next slide please. So

[54:06] we have research commonly used tactile walking surface indicators Including

[54:11] the direction indicators which are the flat topped elongated bars

[54:15] The tactile warning delineators Uh that are the trapezoidal race

[54:20] services and the tractile Attention indicators which are the tyrannocated

[54:24] domes We've also have some samples back there if anyone

[54:28] is interested in taking a look after We can pass

[54:30] them around Next slide please. So the preferred approach at

[54:38] City of Ottawa is to have the half height barrier

[54:41] curve between the possession and cycling facility The barrier curb

[54:45] would be cane detectable due to the difference in elevation

[54:48] But also won't be a pedal strike hazard for cyclists

[54:52] may not be a parent visually at first But as

[54:54] you can see in the diagram on the top right

[54:56] There is an elevation difference Um, however the elevation difference

[55:01] could also cause adrenainage issues depending on existing conditions and

[55:06] the way the grade and drainage flow currently operates. Um,

[55:10] next slide please. So in areas where drainage or the

[55:15] other issues and the half - height curb cannot be

[55:17] implemented Ottawa has an alternative approach in areas Um, where

[55:23] that's not feasible to have the dropped curb This tech

[55:28] Which is the tactile delineator plates. The tactile deny or

[55:32] paint was piloted by the city of Ottawa on Mixed

[55:35] King Bridge and was deemed successful and is now The

[55:39] recommended alternative to wherever the half - height curb cannot

[55:43] be a comma dated. Next slide peace. The city of

[55:50] Toronto's approach similar Ottawa is a height difference between the

[55:53] cycle track and the sidewalk as well They - this

[55:57] could be a cheap through either a barrier curb, a

[55:59] beveled curb or a fully mountable curb as shown in

[56:02] the slide Again The elevation difference may cause drainage issues

[56:05] if existing conditions are not favorable And their alternative approach

[56:09] is doing cents all a band of visually contrasted king

[56:13] detectable unit pavers. Um... And you can see that image

[56:17] in the bottom left And I believe I've seen a

[56:20] similar application in Mississauga as well. Next slide please. So

[56:27] the slide says Metrolinks But that's incorrect This is actually

[56:30] a federal recommendations from accessibility standards Canada It was just

[56:34] shared by a colleague from Metro Lynx. Is king detectable

[56:39] Um... The trapzoidal tactile warning didn't delineater And signals are

[56:44] no crossing point But it's still transversible by strollers and

[56:47] mobility AIDS It could be used to identify the edge

[56:50] of the pedestrian path in a shared or adjacent to

[56:53] a cycle tracks Um... I've not been able to find

[56:56] an application of this Insider, Ontario But it is research

[56:59] - backed and becoming an emerging Practice in North America.

[57:03] Next slide please. So we've shared some of our initial

[57:08] thoughts and research with our operations on maintenance team regarding

[57:11] the long - term impacts of the half - height

[57:13] curb and the trapezoidal delineator as those are not currently

[57:16] installed anywhere in Brampton We're still discussing with the preferred

[57:20] solution would look like And we're quite in the early

[57:23] stages We'll work closely with both our Accessibility team and

[57:27] Opera instants and maintenance team to create a solution for

[57:30] Brampton Projects moving forward That works for everyone. Next slide

[57:35] please. So in the interim We're looking for feedback from

[57:42] the committee If the other jurisdictions we should consider in

[57:45] our review Even outside of Ontario or North America Again

[57:49] We're in the early phases and nothing has been finalised

[57:52] or tested If there are applications in the vicinity We

[57:56] could possibly coordinate site visits as well to better understand

[58:01] and inform the design for a Brampton specific solution. Next

[58:04] slide please. Thank you and let me know if you

[58:13] you for your presentation Um I'll let Vanessa go. She's

[58:18] already ready to rock and roll Um Thank you for

[58:21] this Roveda However I feel like this is too little

[58:24] too late. Um, where was this when The Brampton Downtown

[58:30] Revitalization Project was being done? So this project is separate

[58:34] from The Downtown Revitalization Project and it's to inform future

[58:39] standards. But the current product as we saw in the

[58:44] CNAB Presentation The products were used incorrectly. So that was

[58:49] not my team You would have to defer any questions

[58:51] related to that to the demo Okay Can we defer

[58:54] the questions to whoever is responsible for it please Um

[58:58] Because this is a huge... This is a huge issue

[59:01] with that And it just seems very coincidental that everything

[59:05] that was in my email is a recommendation To the

[59:08] Accessibility team is now coming up in some sort of

[59:11] update in this And it's not to be honest This

[59:15] is not a standard Like I don't know if you

[59:17] have more documents But this just looks like a bunch

[59:21] of pictures on a presentation So I just I feel

[59:25] like this is a lot of saving face to be

[59:29] honest And I'm incredibly frustrated after being gas lit by

[59:34] the accessibility team since the end of May When I

[59:37] flagged this issue. It's a incredibly high risk safety issue

[59:45] It's a financial issue Because now the city is going

[59:48] to have to pay taxpayer dollars to repair these Um

[59:53] And it exposes the city to an incredible amount of

[59:56] liability Someone can issue a complaint to the human rights

[1:00:00] Tribunal. I'm just I'm absolutely I don't even have words

[1:00:07] for how frustrated I am. With this committee. And what

[1:00:12] I'm seeing Um... Be installed in Brampton. Large projects that

[1:00:20] have big impact from an accessibility perspective And also high

[1:00:25] financial price tag to it are not being brought to

[1:00:28] the council's attention I've been on the council for the

[1:00:31] last two and a half years And I have not

[1:00:34] seen any plans for The Downtown Revitalization Project This is

[1:00:39] not The first time that even code minimum requirements haven't

[1:00:43] been met Um... And I would just like The Minutes

[1:00:48] to show my complete frustration. And at this point This

[1:00:54] is a mandated committee. Required by the ministry of Accessibility

[1:01:02] and seniors It's not a committee because Um... Brampton likes

[1:01:08] to have it They're required to have it And if

[1:01:11] information is being kept from the accessibility committee on purpose

[1:01:15] So that certain accessibility features Don't need to be installed.

[1:01:20] Or I really don't know the reason behind this to

[1:01:23] be honest Um. I'm just... I'm incredibly frustrated and disappointed

[1:01:31] Um... I realise that I'm a volunteer on this committee

[1:01:35] But I am also a building code and accessibility consultant

[1:01:39] So I am knowledgeable in this realm I can read

[1:01:43] drawings So if you put something in front of me

[1:01:45] that is not correct I'm gonna call you out on

[1:01:47] it. So and we appreciate that. But just to clarify

[1:01:56] The downtown vitalization Project is being done by a separate

[1:01:59] team And is completely separate Project This is a complete

[1:02:03] street standard update To be fair This should have been

[1:02:06] done long before the revitalization Project We have tactile direction

[1:02:11] indicators use properly at peel Memorial hospital. So the excuse

[1:02:17] for them to be used incorrectly In addition to that

[1:02:20] It's not just the tactile direction indicators that were used

[1:02:23] incorrectly You don't have any contrast on the tactile Um...

[1:02:29] Attention indicators The clear width of the sidewalk does not

[1:02:32] meet city of Brampton Minimum standards There's trees in the

[1:02:36] way There are... Planters garbages in the way Um... And

[1:02:42] again I reiterate that this is a huge liability for

[1:02:46] the city of Brampton Um It's a huge safety issue

[1:02:50] for citizens And this You know Do we not want

[1:02:55] to be leaders in the accessibility realm rather than trying

[1:02:58] to cut corners? And slip things by the accessibility Advisory

[1:03:03] Committee. And I recognise that this is not a question

[1:03:07] to you This is a question to city of Brampton.

[1:03:13] Transit team or the Rhodes team as well as The

[1:03:16] Accessibility Team What's going on here? So we're gonna try

[1:03:22] our best to keep the Accessibility Team at the Sear

[1:03:26] Brampton and The Accessibility Committee has involved as they would

[1:03:29] like in the Complete Street Standard Project Um, we can...

[1:03:37] Right now again As I mentioned We're still in the

[1:03:39] early stages And nothing has been finalised for this update

[1:03:43] And we are looking for your feedback Moving forward for

[1:03:46] any future projects Currently we don't have My understanding is

[1:03:51] we don't have a standard For that delete Nation between

[1:03:54] sidewalks and cycle tracks So that's something we're trying to

[1:03:58] address through this standard update project. Um I would like

[1:04:04] to ask whoever is responsible for the Providealization Project that

[1:04:10] Um... They... I mean I don't know what we can

[1:05:06] terms of having somebody come to the next one and

[1:05:15] cane Are going to assume that it is a good

[1:05:18] An install properly product And if they're going to be

[1:05:21] bumping into garbage cans going into the bicycle lanes Possibly

[1:09:27] Regarding Accessibility issues identified for the downtown Rivalization Project. Vanessa

[1:09:32] You have the floor. Great Thank you Nuno Um So

[1:09:36] as I previously discussed Um we have some serious issues

[1:09:41] with the city of Brampton Downtown Revitalization Project Um... Where

[1:09:46] the sidewalk was Um... I guess I guess not really

[1:09:51] extended Um... But it was replaced with the new granite

[1:09:55] stone Um... And in addition to that The parking lanes

[1:10:00] were converted into What I'm been told are bike lanes

[1:10:04] But then... On them to really identify them as such

[1:10:08] Um... Or does it align to the city of Brampton

[1:10:13] Bike path standards? Um... Possibly the reason for this Um...

[1:10:18] Maybe they haven't... Put in the signage yet But... This

[1:10:24] is how it looks today Um... Some of the photos

[1:10:28] that we included were prior to the tactile Attention indicators

[1:10:34] being installed Which are The truncated domes That you see

[1:10:36] here Um... And as you can see The tactile tension

[1:10:41] indicator comes right into the sidewalk Um... These are also

[1:10:45] required to have a contrast As per the city of

[1:10:48] Brampton Um... Accessibility Technical guidelines Um... And this is something

[1:10:54] that we see It's... It's not anything new Um... You

[1:11:00] know The sidewalk intersections throughout The neighbourhoods You see sort

[1:11:03] of that... Um... Sort of rusted iron Um... Tactile Attention

[1:11:11] indicators before you get to The intersection Um... But in

[1:11:14] this case I guess I had an effort to keep

[1:11:18] the material consistent There was no colour contrast So first

[1:11:22] of all These were installed. Late Um... Without any sort

[1:11:27] of Additional signage or safety Um... Until they were installed

[1:11:33] Now that they have been installed It's clear that the

[1:11:36] contrast is not there Um... You can also see in

[1:11:39] this photo The tactile direction indicator That leads right into

[1:11:43] the lamp post And as per Kate's Um... Presentation earlier

[1:11:50] Um... She did indicate that these are to guide someone

[1:11:54] Um... Who has... A vision disability Down a safe path

[1:11:59] using their white cane Um This is a standard that

[1:12:02] has been adopted by a whole community And... And to

[1:12:06] use it for another use Um... Is quite frankly dangerous

[1:12:11] Um... When I... Inquired with the Accessibility Team about this

[1:12:17] Um... I was constantly put off Um... And it just...

[1:12:23] It very much felt like you wanted me to go

[1:12:25] away And I'm I'm not gonna go away Because I

[1:12:28] feel very strongly about The safety of our citizens Um...

[1:12:34] The last communication that I had from the city of

[1:12:37] Brampton team Was that the consultant who designed it indicated

[1:12:41] There was nothing telling them But they couldn't use it

[1:12:43] for that purpose And That in my opinion That's a

[1:12:47] very ignorant statement Um... Especially when we're dealing with something

[1:12:51] as sensitive As accessibility Um... Again This is... This tactile

[1:12:59] Uh... Direction indicator has been adopted by The Disability Community

[1:13:03] to lead them down a safe path And I don't

[1:13:06] know if anybody in this room could tell me that

[1:13:08] this is a safe path When you're going right into

[1:13:11] a lamppost. In addition to that Um... The sidewalks downtown

[1:13:18] We're already narrow Um... And adding... I mean adding the

[1:13:24] bike Lane didn't really improve the width of this Um...

[1:13:28] It's definitely again Not meeting The width at certain points

[1:13:33] to meet the city of Brampton Accessibility guidelines Um... In

[1:13:38] addition to that Um... Just make it up Here. If

[1:13:48] we could just scroll down The photos Please. So this

[1:13:52] was before The Tactile Direction Decaters were installed Um... You

[1:13:56] can see here that... There's almost no path. Um... Someone

[1:14:04] who's walking on a sidewalk So someone using a mobility

[1:14:07] device Would fall into the dirt Um... If they have

[1:14:11] a guide dog with them They're not enough room There

[1:14:14] Um... Possibly You are gonna put The Greats there But

[1:14:18] as. As of The last time I visited They were

[1:14:21] not installed If we could scroll down a bit more

[1:14:24] Please. Um This is also an incredibly dangerous situation I'm

[1:14:30] not sure exactly what happened here Um... But it looks

[1:14:33] like there was some artificial ramping done to bring The

[1:14:38] sidewalk up to the existing Um... Business entrance And probably

[1:14:45] was done with good intention But there's no tactile attention

[1:14:48] indicator The drop - off Um... It's not You know

[1:14:52] properly ramp to the width is incredibly narrow Um... This

[1:14:56] is not Um... The proper way to install accessibility Especially

[1:15:02] when this is a Multi - million dollar Project. Um...

[1:15:10] What I had shared with The City of Brampton Accessibility

[1:15:13] Team... Was tactile The description of tactile Direction indicators in

[1:15:19] the Toronto Accessibility Design Guidelines And I also connected them

[1:15:22] with the city of Ottawa Um... Accessibility team who are

[1:15:26] piloting those tactile Um... Indicators to separate a bike path.

[1:15:34] And a walking path. Scroll down please. And again just

[1:15:42] reiterating So the image on the bottom Um the tactile

[1:15:48] direction indicators are leading you right into the intersection Not

[1:15:51] even on to the pedestrian path Um So this is

[1:15:55] This is a significant issue As I mentioned When I

[1:15:58] reached out The day after our last meeting That this

[1:16:02] is a huge liability issue for the city... It's a

[1:16:06] huge financial issue Because it needs to be resolved sooner

[1:16:09] than later Um... Because more people are just gonna get

[1:16:12] hurt Um... You know Thank you Michelle for sharing your

[1:16:16] experience of walking downtown with the new sidewalks Um but

[1:16:21] this is incredibly disappointing And this is not how a

[1:16:26] leader and accessibility should be Um... You know putting their

[1:16:30] best foot forward And I'm very disappointed that... Um... As

[1:16:34] far as I understand And I've been on this committee

[1:16:36] for the last two and a half years We were

[1:16:38] not consulted Um... We're always very happy to review things

[1:16:44] I have always been very supportive of The Accessibility Team

[1:16:48] to review things One asked And I just... I Feel

[1:16:54] like it's a bit of a farce to be honest

[1:16:57] And... It's very disappointing That... Instead of working together Um...

[1:17:05] Improve accessibility in Brampton It feels like things are Um...

[1:17:11] Not being brought to the committee for specific reasons That

[1:17:15] I'm unclear of. Um... And... At this point I will

[1:17:21] be Contacting the ministry about The frustration that I've been

[1:17:25] facing on this committee over the last two and a

[1:17:28] half years Because this is not The first time Accessibility

[1:17:31] features have been... Not installed correctly And... Frankly I'm very

[1:17:39] frustrated to sit on this committee and have my hands

[1:17:43] completely tied. Because I'm a volunteer. Thank you. Thank you

[1:20:05] work. And our accessibility team. As you know this team

[1:20:13] They work day in and day out with accessibility It

[1:20:15] is the focus of their work every single day They're

[1:20:19] deeply committed. As individuals and as a team. To identifying

[1:20:24] barriers Removing barriers raising awareness and advancing accessibility across our

[1:20:30] city For everybody. And I want to assure you that

[1:20:33] this commitment remains unwavering. It is unwavering from this team.

[1:20:41] Um... And I'm proud to be part of this team.

[1:20:44] I don't have all of the answers. I don't have

[1:20:48] The answers you're looking for today at all. But what

[1:20:51] I can do is ensure you that your questions Your

[1:20:54] concerns are brought back to the appropriate project team We

[1:20:57] are committed as a team to obtaining The Information that

[1:21:00] you need to work through these questions. Both thoughtfully and

[1:21:05] thoroughly. Don't know what the answer is going to be

[1:21:09] I don't know what the fixes can be We all

[1:21:11] see the pictures. Um... There needs to be a great

[1:21:16] deal more conversation. And that's what we can commit to

[1:21:22] today That's what I can commit to And I appreciate

[1:21:24] your advocacy I appreciate the persistence on these matters It

[1:21:28] is important But I want you to know we share

[1:21:30] the same goal. We share the same goal of making

[1:21:33] our community Accessible and inclusive And I will do my

[1:21:42] And considered by the project team. And unfortunately That's all

[1:22:11] accessibility You would not pass along Um... The staff has

[1:22:17] answered The issue to the best of the ability. Um...

[1:22:26] well And Suel has the city clerk And the accessibility

[1:22:29] stuff So they are aware Alright so But everything has

[1:22:31] been seven already So at this point There's no reason

[1:22:35] for you to I disagree Chandra Because their last Genovieves

[1:22:39] last response Was that the consultant said there was nothing

[1:22:44] Saying that they couldn't use those for that. Sorry. We

[1:24:02] The best they could with the information they had But

[1:24:05] at this point really I'm unable to provide any further

[1:24:09] answers I can't answer on their behalf And unless there's

[1:24:13] a new question I can assist with Um... I've responded

[1:24:16] as much as I'm able So I would just like

[1:24:18] the minutes to reflect that I've spent the last three

[1:24:20] months trying to get information from This team. It's not

[1:24:26] a last - minute item that was added to the

[1:24:28] agenda I've been flagging it since The day before The

[1:24:32] day after the last meeting And that's all I'll say

[1:24:35] about it Um, moving forward Um... I would like to

[1:24:37] ask that Um... The revitalization team is at The next

[1:24:41] meeting And that... I would recommend that The Accessibility Team

[1:24:46] Conduct a full audit of what's been installed. Not just

[1:24:51] the tactile Direction indicators But the clear widths The contrast

[1:24:55] of the tactile Um... Attention indicators... And the placement of...

[1:25:04] Planters. Other streetscape items. If I may. Uh Frank Just...

[1:25:15] just add to this point I mean I understand what

[1:25:17] Chandra is saying I understand But finesse is saying Uh

[1:25:20] My point of view to this is Whatever The Oversight

[1:27:08] road We have there being no signs at all Um.

[1:27:13] And since this project team has not been able to

[1:27:15] attend Um... I want to know We've been able to

[1:27:19] share the concerns As Vanessa has said from a while

[1:27:23] ago How would they be held accountable Like are there

[1:27:27] any audits taking place regarding legislation when these things are

[1:27:31] in fruition. Because that's partly what legislation is doing audits

[1:27:36] And then therefore them being held accountable and actually Then

[1:27:40] looking it afterthought. So I just want to put that

[1:27:44] forward It's kind of like a practical standard. Of actually

[1:27:48] doing audits. While it's in process Then wait until it's

[1:27:52] at the very end Or even at the beginning When

[1:27:54] they may send us Actually... They're proposals So I have

[1:32:55] this year. Um... The city is required to update and

[1:32:58] review its Multi - year accessibility plan at least every

[1:33:02] five years So that's what we're doing Um... Since the

[1:33:07] beginning of this year. Um... The plan identifies accessibility initiatives

[1:33:13] and outlines the steps The city will take to continue

[1:33:17] to prevent and remove barriers to accessibilities in our program

[1:33:21] services and facilities. This report Uh... Outlines draft recommendations for

[1:33:29] the next Multi - air accessibility plan And it's based

[1:33:33] on a public consultation phase that was done Um... At...

[1:33:38] The spring and summer of this year. So the steps

[1:33:46] for developing this plan included Uh... Review of the existing

[1:33:50] plan Um... Deciding what should be carried over Um... This

[1:33:55] was done in consultation with... The... The internal stakeholders. And

[1:34:03] Others that were... had involvement in those initiatives. Um... The

[1:34:10] consultation with the community was mainly done through an online

[1:34:15] survey. This was... Done on an online survey available as

[1:34:25] an online survey The survey was also Um... shared with

[1:34:29] AAC. And Accessibility staff also Uh... We're able to meet

[1:34:37] with... Residents that the people that were interested in having

[1:34:43] one - on - one conversation. About the survey questions.

[1:34:50] So the Public Engagement for the The plan was launched

[1:34:57] in May and it concluded in June. It included a

[1:35:03] number of topics Relating to city services The design of

[1:35:08] Public Spaces. The City Buildings. Recreation Programs Transportation. Parks and

[1:35:16] trails and employment Practices. We received over 100 survey responses.

[1:35:26] And we were asked asking people what they thought the

[1:35:29] city was doing well. With regard to accessibility and what

[1:35:34] improvements can be made. So almost half of the responses

[1:35:38] that we received were from people with disabilities The other

[1:35:42] responses were from caregivers family and friends. And people working

[1:35:47] with people with disabilities. So the draft recommendations for the

[1:35:53] The Multi - Year Accessibility plan are included Uh... In

[1:35:57] attachment 1. To this report Um... They are potential action

[1:36:04] items. Um... Based on the feedback that we received from

[1:36:08] the survey. Um... So this is what the residents came

[1:36:14] up with. Uh... Ongoing Accessibility Initiatives from the existing plan

[1:36:20] will be carried forward to the new plan And you'll

[1:36:23] see those in the final Uh... Report that we present.

[1:36:28] So at this point Um... We would like you to

[1:36:33] have a look at the recommendations And let us know

[1:36:37] what your thoughts are and what should be included in

[1:36:40] the next Four - year plan. Are there any questions.

[1:37:50] Um The consultation is with city staff to put the

[1:37:56] recommendations in motion Right But the recommendations are developed by

[1:38:06] or come from a city of Brampton Community. So business

[1:38:12] As I was just getting clarification Because I know a

[1:38:15] couple of them I actually do So I was just

[1:38:18] wondering Like is there someone selected to do them already?

[1:38:21] Or like number one and three. Specifically. Like Is it

[1:38:27] something that the team any of us can be involved

[1:38:30] in or is it just the city of Brampton staff

[1:38:33] per se. City staff will be implementing The recommendations is

[1:38:40] I was that you want to be involved in the

[1:38:42] implementation. Yeah I wouldn't mind that. Just to and yeah.

[1:38:55] experience and that awareness from an invisible discipline visible Disability

[1:38:59] perspective. And this is part of what I do That's

[1:39:04] part of workshops and being able to carry on with

[1:39:08] the advocacy throughout of You know being a voice to

[1:39:11] the voice Listen belonging to part of the community I

[1:39:14] just find it very important when tasks are to be

[1:39:17] done through the plans of including people disabilities in it

[1:39:21] So yeah. Okay we can see how we can involve

[1:39:49] going to be a timeline for when they're implemented? I

[1:39:52] just It's quite a long list And I'm just concerned

[1:39:58] that it might be more than I don't know how

[1:40:01] long the This is a four year period So it's

[1:40:07] fairly significant. In terms of the amount of work So

[1:40:12] I just want to make sure that whatever we're putting

[1:40:15] forth is manageable In the term. Right. Um Sorry So

[1:40:27] are draft recommendations Um... They can be prioritized. If you

[1:40:35] think you feel strongly about Certain ones You can let

[1:41:58] October Maybe so that we can put the plan So

[1:42:01] that's what we're looking at is feedback And actually Prioritizing

[1:42:05] these... recommended action items would be really valuable feedback. For

[1:42:11] the team to implement Uh... Or to add timelines to

[1:42:15] the plan There is a lot of action items Some

[1:42:19] of them are small tasks And some of them are

[1:42:21] quite large undertaking So having the committee's input to the

[1:42:25] prioritization will make a tremendous improvement to the implementation of

[1:42:31] all of them We do expect to achieve all of

[1:42:34] these action items. And this is what the team will

[1:42:38] be putting forth to all of staff and to the

[1:42:41] senior management Council for it to be approved When Council

[1:42:45] approves the final plan Um... That means it's marching orders

[1:42:50] for staff. To start implementing. So in what order? Definitely

[1:42:55] looking for your feedback on that. And I think if

[1:43:00] the at any point with any of the implementation pieces

[1:43:03] An opportunity to engage the committee. Absolutely Uh... We will

[1:43:08] be doing that And I think Lessons learned That would

[1:43:10] be top priority. Uh Thank you You actually answered my

[1:43:26] They go through a training session I'm just wondering if

[1:43:39] they are implemented Because I think it will make it

[1:43:41] easier for all staff Not just The accessibility team But

[1:43:45] everyone involved To have that I know I've participated in

[1:43:51] a... In a simulation... Of what it's like to be

[1:43:55] in a wheelchair What it's like to have cognitive disabilities

[1:43:58] And I think that might be a good way to
