[0:00] Tonight we just wanted to share briefly with you a little bit about our professional learning communities process at Buchanan and also just share with you how beneficial it has been for several of us on our Buchanan team to have been able to attend some of the national PLC conferences.

[0:19] And so I just want to talk a little bit about PLCs and what that means and then I'll let these two ladies just share some of their takeaways from the conferences.

[0:28] So one of the things that I think has I think we've been using the PLC process professional learning communities probably at least 20 years in the peer school district.

[0:38] It's been almost since I think one of the first years that I was teaching here is when we began that process.

[0:45] And really, I think one of the key things is that it's more than just a scheduled time.

[0:54] It is really kind of about how do we do things?

[0:57] How do we do things around here?

[0:59] What are we doing to benefit our kids?

[1:01] How are we making sure that our kids are being successful and reaching those potential that they have?

[1:09] That focus is always really on the student learning.

[1:12] One of the things that Buchanan prides ourselves on is that our kids are all of our kids and so having that collective efficacy where we are all working together for all of our kids

[1:25] I think really shows in the successes that our kids have and the successes that our teachers have in the classroom as well.

[1:34] The four main questions at the PLC process always asks of us and these are questions that we are continually asking of ourselves in our in our meetings that we're having together whether it be our building leadership team meetings or those common planning times that our teachers have built in but what do we want our students to learn how are we going to know if they've learned it what are we going to do if they haven't learned it yet?

[1:59] And what are we going to do if they already know it because we want to also, you know, keep pushing those kids and enriching, reaching all of them.

[2:07] And like I said, one of the real benefits I think that our district has is that we have been willing and able to send teams of teachers to those national conferences.

[2:19] I was happy to attend with Andrea and a group of four, four, four, four, four, four, I was number, there are five of us yet who went to Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona, we got to go in it was like negative 37,000 degrees in here and it was a nice sunny 70 in Arizona, but we went together with a team and not only is it such, such a benefit to be hearing from those national speakers who are so

[2:49] invested in that process. But the time and the collaboration that you have together, following

[2:56] that, when you are going out to you, or don't tell me, don't have Andrea tell you about our

[3:01] electric bike ride. But that time that we have together outside of the conference itself and

[3:08] the business is also just so worthwhile. And then Leslie, I know I went with a team just this

[3:15] last summer to Las Vegas, so they didn't do, I mean, what happens?

[3:21] Other than what you've got to share about.

[3:25] But again, we just are able to learn so much and talk to about the benefits of having multiple

[3:32] staff members who are able to attend to bring back that information.

[3:36] I'll let these ladies share some of what they have taken away from the conferences.

[3:42] Yes, we are just really excited to have the opportunity to go with different teams.

[3:45] And I think it's important that each grade level and department gets a representation each

[3:51] year to get those opportunities because, like she said, the national speakers really

[3:57] refresh that idea of how we need to be world class educators and have the top of the top

[4:05] expectations and always striving to achieve with our students.

[4:10] And so it's really cool how they have the big breakouts, but then they also have all

[4:13] amazing, or it's a big keynote, but then all the little breakouts that are wonderful.

[4:17] So I got to hear great sessions on effective feedback for kids about how our buildings could

[4:24] have collective commitments that were all on board for. One of the things that kind of stuck

[4:29] in my mind was the difference between climate and culture. So a lot of times we're always saying,

[4:35] oh, we have a great climate. We're all smiling and happy and friendly. Well, that's how we feel

[4:39] But to have a positive culture, it's how we're we behaving, how are we taking steps to

[4:45] actively make best use of our time and instruction.

[4:52] So, yeah, just kind of a refresher on impactful leadership.

[4:58] So I could take that back to my fourth grade team and my building and just remembering

[5:04] that PLC is never ending.

[5:05] It's always continuous stamina. We gotta keep up.

[5:13] So I think one of my big takeaways was that they really talked about teacher health.

[5:21] If you don't have healthy teachers, you weren't going to have healthy learners.

[5:27] And I think that was a big takeaway because we are seeing more mental health issues, more burnout, more...

[5:34] We all know behavior is increasing and it was just nice to hear that that is recognized

[5:42] on such a big platform and such a national level.

[5:50] They had some good ideas on helping another thing that I took away was that not only do

[6:03] social behaviors, but you have academic behaviors. You have that metacognition. You have, you know,

[6:10] so, and we just kind of take for granted that behavior is already learned once they come into

[6:21] our buildings. And sometimes, I mean, we are teaching children how to sit and what listening

[6:30] It looks like, and what an appropriate response to an adult is, and we have to teach those things before we can teach ABC123.

[6:45] So just keeping in mind that we all know that kids don't start at the same point, but our collective goal is to all get them to make gains.

[6:56] I

[7:00] just want to re-emphasize, again, thank you, Andrea, and Leslie for sharing those things,

[7:05] but re-emphasize again how impactful it is for us to be able to attend these.

[7:11] So I think the Board for providing us the opportunities and thank our district administration,

[7:17] for allowing us the opportunities to continue our learning because, like we know, teachers,

[7:23] we are continuous learning, never stopping learning.

[7:26] And I loved what...

[7:30] Or now if it was Andrea or Leslie said, but about how that the work for our PLCs is never finished. Just like our improvement plans, they're continuous. We're always looking at ways that we can grow and be better. And that's the same with our PLCs. We continue to refine and our practices. We aren't trying to just do PLC. We want it to be that culture of that continuous improvement. And again, the conference in the learning, when we're there,

[7:59] It doesn't just stay there.

[8:01] That ripple effect when we come back and we share with others and the excitement, of course,

[8:07] of being able to travel to, you know, something, even on an airplane, you know, they might

[8:12] have snacks on there, but, you know, to be able to travel to places that some of us wouldn't

[8:18] get to otherwise.

[8:20] And then to do it with our friends and our colleagues is just a joy.
