[5:29] other certifications. Dererick is from originally from

[5:32] Winslow, Maine. He attended Winsel High School and then went on to the

[5:37] University of Southern Maine where he received a bachelor's degree in sports

[5:40] medicine. In a time where there's a big shortage

[5:44] of police officers, we're very fortunate to have such qualified professional join

[13:39] constitution had in 1787 by protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through

[13:45] this guardian of out liberties remembering that lost rights may never

[13:50] be regained. So um they just need the chair to sign it. So, I've kind of

[13:55] filled it in. Want to sign and copy and attest and seal that

[14:03] and mail that back to her. Next, I'm going into old business

[14:10] couple weeks ago. We talked about our SU8

[14:14] uh school board starting the the term and day decision that was done back in

[14:20] 2009. I happen to be the chair that time. We

[14:24] tabled that last week and you had some information you want to put out.

[14:28] » Uh yes. So since uh when SAD became RSU8,

[14:34] SAD 47 became RSU8, the school board starting term date has been July 1 for

[14:41] the town of Oakland for its existence. Um I did speak to the superintendent.

[14:48] They have nothing in their bylaws regarding any towns when towns can

[14:54] appoint their their board members. Each town does it differently. China starts

[14:59] at a certain time, Belgrade, Rome, Sydney. Um

[15:04] I checked with our lawyer just to make sure and he agreed that it's a pretty

[15:09] much a town's decision. Um, the town did have a special had it on a warrant

[15:14] article in the 2012 May town meeting that had it for July

[15:20] 1st start date. So, um, so I I tabled that myself because I

[15:27] want I remember that we had quite a conversation on it at a time. So I would

[15:31] and I called the superintendent, talked to superintendent, talked to the

[15:34] assistant superintendent, talked to the chair of the board, the current chair,

[15:38] and I talked to the old chair, the the one that just got done. All of them

[15:42] agreed and and they all gave some very valid points saying that at the

[15:47] beginning of July, committees are assigned to all members

[15:52] to all members. So I just give you a hypothetical situation. Dana is all in

[15:56] sports and I'm all into academics. Well, Dana would be in a committee of sports

[16:01] and I'd be in academics. Well, if I'm termed out, not termed out, if I'm voted

[16:06] out come January, my replacement would naturally go into my seat and would take

[16:12] over as the, you know, into academics and might not even want to do anything

[16:16] with academics. And so, it disrupts the whole program in the in the school

[16:22] committ. Um, so that would be one thing. Another thing, they start their budget

[16:26] is what they said. They start their budget and I remember this very clearly.

[16:30] They start their budget as of July 1 already thinking of numbers for the next

[16:35] year already thinking of how many people and if somebody comes in halfway through

[16:41] then again they take in they're halfway through the process and it's kind of

[16:45] like you know they're playing catchup for the rest of the year. So there's a

[16:48] number of very valid points. Um each one of not each one of them only a couple

[16:53] said sounds like you're trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist and and and

[16:58] so for as far as I'm concerned we should not change that

[17:02] » comments. I would agree with that um for for two

[17:08] reasons. Because I think that the voters that voted the the current school board

[17:12] member in deserve to have that person complete their term as did the person

[17:16] that ran and was um and was elected. And additionally, I know there was comments

[17:22] that this town does, this town does it. I don't really think that she was just a

[17:26] precedent to change anything just based on what another town does because people

[17:30] want Oakland to be Oakland, not another town. And each one of the chairs and and

[17:35] and the superintendent, assistant superintendent said, even though they

[17:39] have been elected to the school board, they can attend all those meetings and

[17:44] try to be caught up to, you know, to where they should be come the first part

[17:50] of July. And the other and and I said all of them agreed very much unlike the

[17:56] town of Oakland, we start our budget season in

[18:00] January. So it it's not catchup. I started last week.

[18:04] » Yeah. Yeah, you do. But we we don't get it until but you all your your

[18:09] department heads get it and all that. So I I my recommendation just leave it

[18:13] alone and move on. Boom. >> Ch a question. Um so the the the newly

[18:19] um elected um school board member is able to attend the meetings and observe

[18:24] so that they can be up to speed January July one if they like. I think that's

[18:39] have a lot to do with the district and I have no problem with them starting in

[18:44] July. The problem that I and other people in the district have is that

[18:48] they're not they're voted in November and they don't start till the following

[18:53] July. So you have someone voted out last November, served until just kept it

[19:00] voting and doing everything until the following July when the the new person

[19:05] that was voted in in November start was able to start. Um the consideration that

[19:11] I would like you to make is that why can't we have the voting in June when

[19:16] you did the school board elections? Vote them in in June then they start the

[19:21] next month. every other district, four of the three of them start the the

[19:28] day like right away. Um, and one of them, Belgrade's the only one that has

[19:34] the election in March and they start in June, so it's within a couple months.

[19:38] Ours, so I don't mind I I mean, we're fine with it starting July. Your logic

[19:44] is great. It's spot on, but we would like them to be elected closer to the

[19:51] date they start. So that the people of Oakland have vote that have voted people

[19:55] in, you know, and voted somebody else out don't have the person they voted out

[20:00] in for months and months. >> Exactly.

[20:03] » I understand that and I I don't and I and each one of them had said the same

[20:08] thing. We could do a June vote, but I think our June vote is we might get 500

[20:15] people sometimes. You know, I know a couple years ago we had 228 people

[20:19] voted. uh like our town meeting held in May uh last year I count them every time

[20:25] when we're sitting there we had 98 people representing 6,432

[20:30] people and and I just think me personally and this is we can talk about

[20:35] it more but me personally I think that's a very poor representation when you get

[20:40] 100 or 228 people voting for school board you know that

[20:46] » you had the town was Say it again, sir. >> I think we haven't listened to that at

[20:52] our town meetings and we're spending a lot more money.

[20:56] » So, they voted in their own.

[20:59] » Yep. So, sir >> agree with 110%. I just think it's the

[21:04] right thing to do. Why keep someone hanging on for till 6 months? You know,

[21:10] seven months and you know they're getting kicked out that just creates

[21:13] poor vibes all the way through. You know what I'm saying? At the same time, each

[21:18] one of the people I talked to at the school said they think that is the best

[21:21] way we're doing it and they said that they wish the other towns would do it

[21:25] also.
