it's called the Charles City it mates
[0:06]
with School District Board of Education
[0:09]
meeting to order number two a little
[0:25]
agendas do we have any changes additions
[0:27]
Corrections and I also post their sign
[0:42]
motion carries
[0:43]
one of welcome visitors for public
[0:45]
comment will see you in your process for
[0:54]
really assessment survey we have Mr
[0:58]
Jerry Gallagher here again to help us
[1:00]
discuss this we're so excited we have
[1:03]
these special guests so Jerry's here we
[1:05]
have Jerry Mitchell operations director
[1:07]
under group Communications Justin -
[1:10]
boring than our high school principal
[1:11]
Brian Jones just so we know it's Jerry
[1:14]
Gallagher probably be here with the
[1:15]
first half an hour so we have things
[1:17]
targeted for Kenny one way to do that
[1:22]
the discussion who had to the first item
[1:25]
they would like to discuss
[1:34]
weirdly here also the stage person yeah
[1:53]
we all know that we have some facilities
[1:56]
you know you go back to 2013 you know
[1:59]
when the bill school project came about
[2:01]
you know this one plugin called phase 2
[2:03]
you know phase 2 what we want to do with
[2:05]
some high school renovations and things
[2:07]
like that and now you know for a variety
[2:11]
of reasons there's a little bit of a lag
[2:13]
and you know the next steps on that but
[2:15]
you know we've been having a lot of
[2:16]
internal discussions and now we're ready
[2:18]
to start having some more external
[2:20]
discussions as well and you know we're
[2:23]
looking at really tiny Gummidge of when
[2:26]
it would you know first of all the
[2:27]
timing of when we might ask the
[2:29]
community to support this but also what
[2:31]
it could be as well and what those
[2:33]
things are because it's not just ice
[2:34]
where we have needs with our secure
[2:37]
entrances of the elementary you know
[2:39]
there's other things we need to look at
[2:40]
there's some learning opportunities with
[2:42]
as we talked about pathway learning as
[2:45]
we talked about so the partnership we've
[2:47]
had with some of our you know with
[2:49]
Niagara we talked about you know career
[2:50]
based learning and those same types of
[2:52]
things so that be driven that way as
[2:53]
well and then also talking about you
[2:57]
know what makes it sustainable what
[2:59]
makes it attractive Northeast Iowa and
[3:01]
you know facilities are a piece of that
[3:02]
as well so I think that just kind of
[3:04]
drives the discussion what what to do we
[3:06]
obviously the postcard that shows us
[3:08]
where the survey results showed us where
[3:11]
we are in terms of understanding and
[3:15]
comprehension the community of some of
[3:16]
these needs so I just looking for
[3:19]
guidance stuff from the board of what
[3:20]
next steps may be and what we want to do
[3:23]
Jerry
[3:24]
together you walked on I have been
[3:27]
through lots of facilities across the
[3:29]
state of Iowa I'm talking about
[3:32]
Washington and Lincoln and those secure
[3:34]
entrances is that a common thing that
[3:36]
you see where the upgrade is necessary
[3:41]
yes yes and it is a common selling point
[3:48]
to help drive home to folks the for lack
[3:52]
of a better way to say it it gets
[3:55]
people's attention when you're talking
[3:57]
about safety and security it's something
[4:00]
that has broad reach and heel to your
[4:03]
stakeholders and so typically when I
[4:06]
talk to school districts about that I
[4:09]
recommend putting ads front and center
[4:11]
when you're we're having conversations
[4:13]
with why I'm wondering if um I'm a part
[4:20]
of that safety issue would we all know
[4:22]
the circles at the high school because
[4:24]
there are the night lights and things
[4:26]
like that and so that would be a part of
[4:29]
the whole safety thing right yeah did
[4:32]
you also get your foot traffic and where
[4:35]
do you get most people when you're
[4:37]
building it's probably with high school
[4:39]
all right
[4:39]
argument over the video Elementary so I
[4:43]
think that and what I was in there it's
[4:47]
all bit when you're selling needs you
[4:51]
want to think about what makes us unique
[4:55]
compared to other buildings because you
[4:58]
have to assume that there is going to be
[5:00]
a segment of your population that has
[5:03]
been in other buildings and they've been
[5:05]
in other high schools and you're those
[5:08]
sight lines with those circles are so
[5:10]
unique that I up again that's another
[5:13]
issue that put near the top to say okay
[5:15]
this is something that it worked in the
[5:18]
1960s it is not feasible now it isn't it
[5:23]
isn't just a safety issue
[5:26]
it's a mobility issue it's a more
[5:30]
comfortable 'ti issue but for saving it
[5:33]
security absolutely that's a problem
[5:35]
that is a problem and also like all the
[5:39]
outside doors that we have the
[5:41]
two entrances yeah I was walking through
[5:44]
your classrooms it might be at another
[5:47]
high school that I had been in recently
[5:50]
and I've had a lot of tools and so I
[5:52]
know what stands out and some of those
[5:55]
exit ways and entryways and classrooms
[5:58]
were very unusual I guess I don't
[6:01]
understand focus when the building is
[6:03]
constructed but again easing the access
[6:07]
is not necessarily something that I
[6:08]
would want to against your high school
[6:17]
what about Jerry what about learning
[6:19]
spaces you know as we as we talk about
[6:21]
learning spaces and into circles and in
[6:24]
some of the areas that you walked in the
[6:25]
high school how do those compare in
[6:28]
terms of facilities to other areas that
[6:30]
you've walked in the state this like
[6:33]
antiquated you know it just they did not
[6:36]
give me that feel of not regulation
[6:42]
you're really looking at it was a city
[6:45]
get kind of a learning style is what I
[6:48]
thought what I want we're developing
[6:49]
that this is very traditional
[6:51]
instead of there's so many classroom
[6:54]
settings today that have flexible
[6:57]
seating you walk in if you know this is
[7:00]
going to be very easy for these kids to
[7:01]
collaborate I talk about my kids all the
[7:03]
time always they gonna learn and it's
[7:05]
just through constant conversation and
[7:07]
when I wanted to your classrooms I kind
[7:09]
of help this is pretty traditional which
[7:12]
is okay and that's what we want but did
[7:16]
you know there has to be something so as
[7:20]
you've gone through other districts do
[7:22]
see more flexible use spaces or do you
[7:25]
see what we've kind of determined here
[7:27]
is to be a traditional setup more
[7:29]
flexible spaces I've even seen older
[7:32]
buildings be making what they can with
[7:36]
the space to modernize a little more
[7:38]
effectively the motion able to do so
[7:40]
mark to form a spaces that you know
[7:45]
teachers can set aside time to
[7:48]
collaborate students can set aside time
[7:51]
to work together and I just didn't make
[7:54]
those spaces are there and I saw that in
[7:56]
old school I thought though at my school
[7:59]
when you walked around did you see did
[8:01]
you see areas where students felt
[8:03]
thinking they could come
[8:04]
you know Tom work on projects or
[8:09]
homework things like that in high school
[8:13]
yeah
[8:16]
nothing comes to mind off the top of my
[8:19]
head adjusted my under pressure I don't
[8:21]
remember seeing that I felt that here
[8:24]
kind of industrial death area was very
[8:27]
strong and that there were there were
[8:29]
spaces back there there's a lot in that
[8:32]
area but otherwise I didn't you know I
[8:35]
didn't kiss I don't remember anything
[8:38]
that I saw but a couple months ago in
[8:41]
part because it's good the movement of
[8:43]
those circles that when you walk in
[8:45]
there it just takes your attention away
[8:47]
from everything else and so is it just
[8:49]
hard you know physically put anything in
[8:52]
there or kids to mean bit because so
[8:54]
many schools now have these common areas
[8:58]
you know have these places set aside for
[9:02]
kids to be a little more together I
[9:04]
don't remember anything like that make
[9:07]
it wrong I think there's a little bit I
[9:13]
mean there's kids do go in there though
[9:17]
she used to like her library right and
[9:19]
then I wouldn't know the computer lab
[9:21]
but now people I know those seniors they
[9:29]
are the senior she had launched an error
[9:30]
on this in years
[9:33]
and other than that it's like the study
[9:35]
Hagen witnesses or Meyer or it's like a
[9:39]
conference it's all the time just one
[9:46]
now I don't know they might be split I
[9:48]
added pounds that you don't know I know
[9:50]
my soul Meyers is on the one side right
[9:52]
where the desk is and then during this
[9:55]
study quality other side is like more
[9:57]
free range and sometimes like I know I'm
[9:59]
in mr. Pittman's classroom sometimes we
[10:02]
like going and the big table but it's in
[10:07]
split or was where seniors are on one
[10:10]
side the other those periods whatever
[10:13]
wait
[10:13]
and the other side versus tables yeah I
[10:16]
think one of the things that the high
[10:21]
school philosophy for a long time has
[10:24]
will just make do with what we have
[10:27]
right and I think this is
[10:31]
a time where borders saying do we need
[10:34]
to change that maritime
[10:37]
and Brian do you want to speak to our
[10:40]
strategic goals in terms of teaching and
[10:43]
learning have been equity student
[10:45]
leadership student engagement and
[10:47]
especially you think about student
[10:48]
leader statements to engagement Brian
[10:50]
you wanna talk about some the
[10:50]
conversations you're having as a staff
[10:52]
where in the possible future of the term
[10:55]
of teaching learning a little bit really
[11:03]
freaking hard right now to come up with
[11:05]
kind of a new model for our ice wall
[11:07]
that's really focused on engagement
[11:09]
that's you know kind of main purpose of
[11:11]
it is that we take very strong that our
[11:13]
high school right what's our goal our
[11:15]
goal to prepare kids for post high
[11:16]
school right and that goes a bunch of
[11:18]
different directions unfortunately when
[11:20]
you have you know the more traditional
[11:22]
model kind of like we pointed out but
[11:25]
we're not always hitting everything so
[11:27]
we're really working together and oh the
[11:29]
community group yesterday of some
[11:30]
business leaders just kind of going
[11:32]
through like what kind of things as our
[11:33]
community become our kids what we're
[11:36]
starting to learn is it's a lot of you
[11:37]
know surprise a lot of hands on a lot of
[11:40]
you know work based career based things
[11:42]
which all tie into that engagement all
[11:45]
the time that equity thing that when you
[11:47]
just have four walls in the classroom
[11:49]
and it's a little tough you know so
[11:50]
we're trying to kind of get creative you
[11:52]
know it's that unfortunately no it's we
[11:54]
can get creative with our space but it's
[11:56]
a lot better experience it's a lot
[11:58]
better situation and also we can start
[11:59]
to have that flexibility or in those
[12:01]
common areas or he brings up a really
[12:03]
good point about that kind of commentary
[12:06]
one of our biggest users of that mr.
[12:07]
Pittman why because he just has a
[12:09]
classroom he wants to build a lot and
[12:11]
have larger groups work and work on
[12:12]
individual projects and that's that's
[12:14]
the art of engagement that's the order
[12:16]
know if you don't even student
[12:17]
leadership is pieces but so as we kind
[12:20]
of ran the water we're starting to see
[12:21]
more anticipation those are the two
[12:31]
words that you really where we have two
[12:33]
themes that you really drove around if
[12:35]
you think about what a new high school
[12:37]
space could be be a little over the two
[12:39]
words is usually pushes a lot of
[12:41]
flexibility you know that it needs to be
[12:43]
a flexible space it needs to be
[12:45]
something we can use but it also needs
[12:47]
to be a good balance you know this it's
[12:49]
how can we make it so we have classroom
[12:52]
time but then we also have a balance of
[12:53]
really those open those large group
[12:55]
things those are kind of the two big
[12:56]
things that I pushed on the staff with a
[12:58]
flexible space and into the balance just
[13:01]
to make sure they kind of have a good
[13:02]
frame of mind going into it when we
[13:04]
start talking about I would be cool to
[13:06]
add this kind of stuff and that's what
[13:10]
I've been really pleased about is you
[13:12]
know I think to the public it feels like
[13:14]
nothing's been happening but there's
[13:15]
been a lot of internal discussions we
[13:17]
knew that any good discussion around
[13:19]
what what the needs of our students are
[13:22]
you know for facilities starts with
[13:24]
students and starts with teachers and so
[13:27]
Brian and really proud of the work he's
[13:28]
done the last you know year he spent is
[13:31]
having lots of one-on-one discussions
[13:32]
small group discussions what are the
[13:34]
needs you know what's the what's the
[13:36]
strengths what the weaknesses are you
[13:38]
know and what we need to approach in a
[13:39]
lot of discussions with kids you know
[13:41]
they know because they're the ones that
[13:42]
live it every day you know and I know
[13:44]
that ultimately not the ones that make
[13:45]
the final decision you know the
[13:47]
community makes the final decision on
[13:48]
that we have to communicate that but it
[13:49]
starts with it starts with our kids and
[13:51]
our staff on you know what
[13:54]
when we believe in with our vision
[13:55]
what's our mission and then try
[13:57]
facilitated discussions around that so
[13:59]
that's when we give him a lot of credit
[14:01]
for the work he's led on that yeah it
[14:23]
was crazy like the new middle school is
[14:26]
just like like we've all been talking
[14:27]
about just so much more water like the
[14:29]
doors moved inside his eye but you could
[14:32]
like I mean well and what we really did
[14:35]
our intimate gear which I don't know if
[14:37]
you guys remember we focused a lot of
[14:38]
that courtyard from like the cemetery
[14:41]
project and so we did a lot more of like
[14:45]
collaborating within groups so like my
[14:48]
group we were like we did stuff with the
[14:50]
cemetery and we like we're on the radio
[14:53]
so that was like our thing in other
[14:55]
groups we did the chapel and like that
[14:57]
was an ongoing project process outside
[14:59]
of our eighth grade year so like a lot
[15:02]
of what we did was different that and
[15:04]
the only reason we were able to do that
[15:06]
was because of the way that the facility
[15:08]
was set up like I would have been way
[15:09]
harder a viewer to trying to try to do
[15:11]
it in the old middle school eighth grade
[15:13]
year so I think that the way that the
[15:15]
numinous was set up that a lot of a lot
[15:17]
more like group discussions and like
[15:20]
just of open classrooms the ability that
[15:23]
they are able to like open up all those
[15:25]
doors and like we we've just get half
[15:27]
the day to just work on our projects so
[15:29]
it was a lot easier then I think it
[15:31]
would have
[15:40]
and I want to commend her staff you know
[15:42]
I time in the campuses every day seeing
[15:45]
a middle school how to utilize that you
[15:46]
know I watch the fifth grade we were one
[15:49]
of their final projects before
[15:50]
Thanksgiving was a it was a
[15:51]
project-based learning type of scenario
[15:54]
I'd make a pumpkin farm station all the
[15:56]
way throughout it well you have a
[15:57]
student leadership the student agent it
[15:59]
was it was so cool for some reason a
[16:01]
couple kids have taken their shoes off
[16:02]
during instruction time and they put the
[16:05]
shoes back on I remember one of the kids
[16:06]
goes you need to go wash your hands you
[16:07]
should touch your shoes I mean it's
[16:09]
doing leadership and engagement and you
[16:11]
know they were building mock cities in
[16:13]
math but you know that's not as possible
[16:16]
in a really structured just for wall
[16:18]
space because as I go in there using the
[16:20]
caves that are using the meadows they're
[16:22]
using the open space you know I they're
[16:24]
making a plot map in Marshall County so
[16:28]
that Boyd County you know in eighth
[16:31]
grade right now and they're using all
[16:32]
those spaces and that interdisciplinary
[16:34]
piece and the collaboration comes from
[16:36]
it I want to really credit high school
[16:38]
staff and they're still doing that it's
[16:39]
just a lot more difficult you know Rob
[16:41]
head has got to take and do a lousy it
[16:44]
was like Hawaiian it was a Hawaiian he
[16:45]
was doing like a War Chant
[16:47]
one day he's in the cafeteria and you
[16:50]
know things going on and or you know and
[16:53]
it's fine we have to be really you know
[16:56]
cautious of not disrupt any classes or
[16:58]
kissers have enough sectionals in the
[16:59]
common space you know the main
[17:01]
intersection the high school you know
[17:03]
comic a face print I wear these and the
[17:06]
sad part is we have so much square
[17:08]
footage out there but it's just not
[17:10]
utilized appropriately because you can
[17:11]
there PI their circles and we're not
[17:13]
able to appropriately you know utilize
[17:15]
them if you think about the flow between
[17:18]
at five five hundred circle or you know
[17:20]
with the study hall space and it's a
[17:22]
doorway we're trying to eat grass during
[17:25]
passing time in a four minute passing
[17:26]
time you know
[17:27]
five hundred kids through a doorway that
[17:29]
wine so there's just some things that
[17:31]
don't make sense that you know the
[17:38]
jury's got about ten minutes left what
[17:40]
other questions do we have for him so we
[17:42]
can make sure he gets his daughter to
[17:45]
school on time guess that's why he's got
[17:47]
to do such a big man yeah one of the
[17:57]
things that I would recommend doing if
[17:59]
you noticed in terms of this
[18:01]
conversation is that I think it might
[18:04]
sound simple but it takes organizational
[18:06]
work has to get more children's and I
[18:09]
went to tours a couple of different ways
[18:12]
I would do two words that are general
[18:15]
open to the public you know different
[18:18]
times whether they be Saturday mornings
[18:20]
or 30 nights so you're able to get
[18:24]
people with different schedules in but I
[18:25]
would also do very targeted invitation
[18:28]
all right tours and select business
[18:34]
leaders from parent groups maybe senior
[18:42]
citizens
[18:42]
you know just people did you know that
[18:46]
you want as a board and have a really
[18:50]
good dialogue list and be able to answer
[18:52]
their questions and you know that they
[18:55]
could help you also spread the word
[18:56]
another person and you would make them
[19:00]
feel engaged and important as well I
[19:02]
invited now I think it's important I
[19:04]
would have loved loved loved student
[19:07]
engagement here this morning and I would
[19:10]
encourage you to have students help to
[19:14]
lead those towards
[19:16]
there's ones that are living everyday
[19:18]
and what's different about them
[19:20]
listening these groups listening to
[19:22]
students or were teachers is that
[19:25]
there's just that it was advice makers
[19:27]
will have by those teachers talk about
[19:30]
it because they feel that there's that
[19:32]
direct financial gain and windfall for
[19:36]
teachers with a new building whereas the
[19:38]
students
[19:39]
it's just the you're just advancing
[19:42]
their education and so there is a
[19:44]
difference in how they listen to
[19:45]
students as opposed to teachers and so I
[19:48]
we have a few trusted students you know
[19:50]
can be or not you're not in any way
[19:54]
she'd would dictate what the students
[19:56]
say we just know that they won't handle
[19:58]
it well answer questions and hopefully
[20:01]
it's work and of course that's not to
[20:02]
say that you don't have buildings
[20:07]
maintenance folks they're you know can
[20:09]
call other leadership that are available
[20:12]
to answer questions by with offline over
[20:15]
those tours another thing that I would
[20:17]
do is I would make sure they have one
[20:20]
page fact sheets available very soon and
[20:25]
events and you know this isn't about
[20:28]
saying here's the Bovington for this is
[20:33]
what we're going to do necessarily
[20:33]
companies I think that it's just about
[20:36]
here's where we're at this is this is
[20:39]
where we're at these are some of the
[20:40]
things that you know is if we need that
[20:43]
we that we don't have show a couple
[20:45]
pictures and an anecdote give some data
[20:48]
and put it on one page for folks have to
[20:51]
have that you know next to a program
[20:55]
that concert or basketball we probably
[20:58]
start doing to show it over because it's
[21:01]
very clear than our survey and then
[21:03]
we've discussed this before
[21:05]
afterwards in wide gap in knowledge and
[21:09]
understanding their needs so so we've
[21:13]
got to start doing that if you want to
[21:15]
continue your advanced constellation
[21:18]
Jerry before you go just one question
[21:22]
we've had a lot of the residents here in
[21:24]
town we've lived in in Floyd County and
[21:26]
in the district for a long time and a
[21:28]
lot of them have gone to school there
[21:30]
some of them have gone to school there
[21:31]
and they have some strong opinions about
[21:33]
you know how that facility fit them when
[21:35]
they went through in their early 1970s
[21:37]
do you have any maybe suggestions on how
[21:41]
we can help to change that public
[21:45]
opinion of it was good enough for me
[21:47]
it's good enough for my kids or
[21:50]
grandkids or nephews or nieces or
[21:52]
whoever you want to put them all the
[21:55]
most powerful our communication pieces
[21:57]
that I've been a part of in recent years
[22:00]
was what they students a senior in high
[22:03]
school who unprompted do like an
[22:07]
interview about sodas leads said exactly
[22:09]
what it is you said and laid it out
[22:13]
there in a way that was very much
[22:16]
concise but informative by saying
[22:19]
something along the lines of you know I
[22:21]
hear that to my parents my grandparents
[22:22]
all the time that you know that this is this was good enough for them
[22:28]
that she'd be for me here's why it's not
[22:31]
here's why learning has changed I don't
[22:35]
work and this is what I need to be able
[22:42]
to I you know someday be the head of my
[22:47]
field whatever it is that I want to do
[22:49]
and you have an advocate at the table
[22:51]
right now somebody that I think very
[22:54]
strong because what you're already doing
[22:56]
is saying I've been in a space that
[23:00]
allowed me that gave me that flexibility
[23:02]
of learning and maybe feel comfortable
[23:04]
and I've already made that transition
[23:05]
into the space I didn't you know what it
[23:08]
wasn't it wasn't conducive to good
[23:10]
learning and so I would I would really
[23:13]
recommend having some of those trustees
[23:16]
to the leaders again out of trying some
[23:19]
of this mess today I'm sorry it doesn't
[23:22]
walk in sir
[23:24]
and with levels that have become
[23:39]
sawed-off ppl experience you know
[23:42]
because they well they were here
[23:44]
downtown and they went there and then
[23:47]
they went into the circles limits right
[23:49]
there all three different and they did that cemetery thing which I
[23:54]
think that the parents really appreciate
[23:56]
yeah I mean the community really
[23:58]
appreciated they were really into it and
[24:01]
way behind you they won't donated a lot
[24:03]
of money you know and if we could just
[24:06]
use that you know to a certain extent -
[24:11]
and I think helping just like that with
[24:15]
the students doom leaders say yeah it
[24:18]
was good enough for you but this again
[24:20]
you need because the truth is if you
[24:22]
look at history there's a huge boom in
[24:25]
school construction 1970s in 1962 the
[24:29]
why is that I used to work baby boomers
[24:31]
so the great generation raised their
[24:33]
taxes to accommodate the baby boomers
[24:36]
the fact I'm doing the research the
[24:37]
history on this so the same thing
[24:40]
happens you know a generation is having
[24:42]
the high variance am willing to step up
[24:44]
and do the right thing to do that I
[24:46]
think you know that is part of our
[24:48]
dialogue too is it's an investment and
[24:50]
you know one thing I've you know we
[24:53]
think that are proud of a Kennedy has
[24:56]
supported our has the support of law
[24:59]
enforcement took care of the jail did
[25:02]
you know what now it's time to
[25:03]
security prison-- herself my to take
[25:05]
care of kids yeah no I'm gonna come up
[25:07]
some point keep em up yeah if we do our
[25:09]
job right the jail should be empty
[25:12]
that's a bit of dream beginning for
[25:15]
worse you're trying that's a part of our
[25:16]
mission statement so society make the
[25:39]
world a better place and it's making
[25:42]
kids regular facility around they still
[25:44]
do it but I think I didn't kill the
[25:46]
Thursday company's help facility one
[25:54]
additional thing about facility tours
[25:58]
and again you know I apologize this is
[26:00]
redundant if you want to talk about this
[26:02]
but think about facility tours as a mini
[26:05]
focus group or survey and so when you
[26:09]
have people coming in the door you know
[26:11]
right away on Saturday morning
[26:13]
collaborate with them before they come
[26:16]
them anyway what do you think you're
[26:18]
gonna see today
[26:19]
give me some initial ones the last time
[26:21]
you were here didn't get some feedback
[26:23]
from them
[26:24]
even before they walk in and make sure
[26:26]
and get there before they eat and we'll
[26:30]
go let's get some comments and record
[26:31]
those things that is that that's great
[26:34]
information to have our messaging it's
[26:37]
great information to have these are
[26:38]
these little contacts for you then you
[26:41]
don't know what you're gonna say maybe
[26:43]
they'll come out and say well then it
[26:44]
wasn't as bad as I thought well that
[26:46]
still feedback if you want all of it
[26:49]
and so make sure that you're evaluating
[26:51]
that's true
[26:59]
for 2020 we have two dates possible
[27:04]
realistically for a bond vote correct
[27:07]
mark Kensington Market will ever in your
[27:14]
opinion every ready for March Thank You
[27:17]
passage I know you wanted to tell us I
[27:20]
can tell on your face I don't believe
[27:24]
the you are I'm working the four other
[27:27]
school districts right now ahead of
[27:29]
March in or all we're already way down
[27:33]
the road on requesting and the
[27:39]
informational the informational pieces
[27:41]
are out there we're already doing some
[27:44]
video work and you know that the public
[27:47]
needs by an armed robbery that you have
[27:49]
because of the holiday bridge so I I
[27:52]
would say I think if you use the time
[27:55]
between you know wants to get back to
[27:58]
break to before school ends to be able
[28:00]
to do that heavy so could I ask you a
[28:38]
couple questions you take two years of
[28:40]
high school with perspective you know
[28:43]
the area actually it was per diem rate
[28:54]
when you brought that up instead
[28:57]
just ask them I will tell you the
[29:01]
biggest thing I've seen personally is
[29:03]
there's definitely that you know a lot
[29:06]
of time to do a high school total
[29:07]
Britain in the middle school you know
[29:09]
and you get that kind of like two
[29:11]
different worlds
[29:15]
what am i we bring in a conference I
[29:17]
haven't seen nice what we get together
[29:18]
once a month and so I was just given one
[29:21]
of them as quick walk through and we
[29:23]
walked through those doors in the middle
[29:24]
school and it was like where am i this
[29:27]
doesn't feel the same you know cuz you
[29:29]
see both sides of it you know especially
[29:31]
that one entryway Olsen it goes from
[29:33]
brand new and modern to learner in high
[29:36]
school is not something we've ever been
[29:38]
intentional about to give you a bunch of
[29:40]
personal feedback that's just better
[29:41]
than my little observations but
[29:43]
definitely something that I would argue
[29:47]
that it doesn't help us when we're
[29:48]
hiring no booth you to or us anything
[29:50]
you know and here's what helps with
[29:52]
hiring and you go in and they even when
[29:55]
buildings full of people and even though
[29:56]
it's not a good shade it's still warm
[29:58]
and inviting we have a great family
[30:00]
culture those types of things but what
[30:02]
it really stinks for us is like in
[30:03]
summer we're doing summer hires it's
[30:05]
just an empty skeleton of the building
[30:06]
and they don't have that wanted I can
[30:09]
tell you we had somebody that we were
[30:10]
looking at trying to hire for position
[30:12]
here last year I wanted his passion was
[30:14]
training conditioning and we ended up he
[30:17]
an offer that I'm pretty sure we had
[30:20]
talked about got some feedback when he
[30:21]
saw our waiting room that was I can't
[30:23]
believe that they came over and he had
[30:25]
an opportunity of Minnesota of a much
[30:27]
better facility he loved her family with
[30:29]
her cultures at first sight but like I
[30:31]
can't build a really strong straight
[30:33]
munition prog-rock its kind of going in
[30:49]
the right direction if on these tours
[30:53]
people could see the difference what has
[30:56]
happened to make that facility I do I
[31:02]
mean he's talking more about what like
[31:04]
they did in the shop area with machinery
[31:08]
I'm guessing because I mean like the
[31:10]
structure of it hasn't changed at all I
[31:11]
mean they're changing like misters
[31:13]
Persians yeah God was still Umbreon and
[31:16]
the kids and rest version and Jessie why
[31:19]
are the things that they've done
[31:20]
you know they've just done it with sheer
[31:22]
willpower you know they're we got that
[31:24]
grant from air gas and you know thank
[31:26]
Jerry he helped out with operations
[31:28]
budget at two but they built by
[31:30]
themselves to be welding loose we
[31:31]
repainted we took all that old a
[31:34]
antiquate machinery out sold at an
[31:36]
auction you know we're out in the Olson
[31:37]
had his classroom now they're making mad
[31:39]
to a new woodshop space and then the
[31:42]
renovate a little shops takes in what we
[31:43]
call makerspace it's going to have a
[31:44]
flexible space where they can do a lot
[31:46]
of different things and Jim and Brett
[31:49]
and Jesse have been really clear they
[31:52]
need talking with Jimmie Johnson to
[31:53]
they're actually asking to not do a lot
[31:55]
of renovations down their religious
[31:57]
paint
[31:58]
new doors the doors are all shot those
[32:00]
types of things because they realize if
[32:02]
they're innovative and elsewhere image
[32:03]
they make huge amount of square footage
[32:05]
down there and they also realize the
[32:07]
shops because it does not be pretty
[32:08]
yeah and so and then doing a lot of the
[32:10]
work themselves but they they both are
[32:12]
in classroom out there I mean that's how
[32:14]
cools in the stuff that's I noticed
[32:15]
we're doing dead in the big you know
[32:22]
attracted stuff all that is that he's
[32:25]
got places I think it looks kind of
[32:27]
messy but there's a place over here for
[32:29]
this to happen and it's a place that
[32:31]
we're going to have to happen it I guess
[32:33]
that makes it a flexible space right and
[32:39]
I know like he has like obviously
[32:41]
classes so I he has his own section in
[32:44]
the corner actually reserved for class
[32:46]
that the students have a place to sit
[32:48]
and a desk it's a classroom setting in a
[32:52]
shop yeah he will it's more than happy
[32:56]
to are you around there because when I
[33:00]
was running if something had ever been
[33:06]
happenin
[33:07]
this is what Justin I got coffee - again
[33:10]
we thought the survey results would be
[33:11]
higher on the understanding where we
[33:13]
were and we also didn't waste people's
[33:14]
time that having much Town Hall and
[33:16]
meetings you know that had really been
[33:18]
done back then you know 14 15 you're on
[33:20]
the middle school phase - but something
[33:22]
happened is that we we become a gym and
[33:25]
all our foot traffic on the big events
[33:28]
you know whether it's a huge concert a
[33:30]
basketball game volleyball wrestling
[33:31]
tournament are going there we don't host
[33:34]
much annual high school thinking about
[33:36]
that yeah and all the LR fine arts
[33:38]
performing arts Kobe adores brands and
[33:40]
that's helped us and people understand
[33:42]
there's a need there for an auditorium
[33:44]
but really our foot traffic in terms of
[33:47]
visitor
[33:47]
like that absolutely increase so that I
[33:49]
think Justin I'm willing to talk with
[33:51]
Jerry Gallagher has contributed to the
[33:53]
loss of important people and loss of
[33:56]
understanding of the knee of high school
[33:57]
and when their kids aren't at that level
[33:59]
they don't pay attention know it's three
[34:01]
years their kids to it okay now they're
[34:04]
nice well you can walk in to come a gym
[34:06]
and go oh the whole five Tom campuses
[34:09]
like this you know you don't realize it
[34:11]
it's night and day when you cross that
[34:12]
threshold right but I'm really excited
[34:19]
to about and you know we're talking
[34:22]
about in a career alignment and the work
[34:24]
we're doing with with teaching and
[34:26]
learning high school and I think this is
[34:28]
gonna be product I walk to that the
[34:30]
space will have to again being preceded
[34:32]
do it who are we what we believe in and
[34:34]
then doesn't facilities matter side
[34:36]
because I can call my name but I can
[34:38]
tell you a couple of facilities about
[34:39]
the last 10 years that they're beautiful
[34:41]
but it might as well up in 1965 again
[34:43]
they've built what I call an Eisenhower
[34:45]
school you know you know flat you know
[34:48]
kind of wings and ponds and things like
[34:49]
that and just straight classrooms right
[34:51]
the bathrooms are here and Locker base
[34:52]
and things like that like oh my gosh she
[34:54]
knows so being innovative to figuring
[34:57]
out what our kids need over the next 20
[34:59]
50 years that's part of the process but
[35:02]
that's why we have kids and staff trying
[35:04]
to visionary another your show some of
[35:07]
those buildings in the fall of 13 yeah
[35:15]
but then you see some that are red new
[35:17]
and nice but they were built in 1960
[35:20]
[Music]
[35:24]
Washington is new you know because I
[35:26]
didn't ornate a lot of things changed
[35:29]
and they had an open classroom so that
[35:37]
was kind of back then
[35:38]
and then they wanted to put in a minute
[35:41]
because it was just chaotic
[35:43]
I guess the children you know happy here
[35:47]
even if it's a big flat building it
[35:51]
doesn't have to have and what's what's
[35:54]
funny about Washington is in that Dennis
[35:57]
one of the things and totally concept
[35:58]
was so big and seventies I'm a history
[36:00]
geek like what kind of history of it
[36:02]
however you seen it each web back that
[36:05]
way not all the way it like just free
[36:07]
makes children like but but generations
[36:14]
you know it is web back the other way
[36:17]
you know it's not completed for range
[36:18]
but it can't be classrooms any you know
[36:20]
like with brian says flexible right
[36:22]
that's the middle schools model that
[36:23]
Washington really is too because even
[36:26]
though there's classrooms there's a lot
[36:28]
of open flexible space you know if you
[36:31]
go through the early childhood centers
[36:32]
there's two we called busy be rooms
[36:34]
where kids can come in the middle and
[36:35]
work and collaborate there's a lot of
[36:37]
that space to do that and they use those
[36:39]
you know really really well
[36:41]
and so it's funny in Washington even
[36:43]
though it you know kind of come back a
[36:44]
little bit to the center it's still much
[36:46]
more of an open concept you know the
[36:48]
doctor just straight corridors hallways
[36:50]
if people asked it's kind of odd you
[36:52]
have to walk through the media center to
[36:54]
get to the crash and you're like we
[36:55]
thought about that's beautiful and you
[36:57]
know you should have walk library take
[36:59]
you to the classrooms I don't know if
[37:02]
this
[37:03]
to learn conversation but we had some
[37:07]
friends over a couple nights culpable
[37:08]
community leaders wanting to know a
[37:11]
little bit more about the plans and the
[37:15]
first thing he said was I couldn't get
[37:19]
those test scores up we just had a
[37:23]
meeting about that very thing that
[37:25]
that's not the most importantly and then
[37:27]
he also brought up wouldn't it be
[37:30]
interesting to know where these kids are
[37:31]
in five or ten years which we also
[37:33]
talked about at that meeting and the
[37:37]
school that where he grew up in is that
[37:38]
a lot of things without reach to get
[37:41]
successful people contributing in a big
[37:46]
way and so that's that's a couple over
[37:51]
then we're this will come to board you
[37:54]
know we're looking at how can we engage
[37:57]
our community to know if we're healthy
[37:59]
and I didn't know thank you to a couple
[38:01]
of board member set on a focus group for
[38:02]
doing that we'll have fun at work but
[38:04]
you know I know that's a conversation
[38:05]
you know our facilities time to test
[38:08]
scores if you know the types of things
[38:09]
and what I would say is the on test
[38:12]
scores it's time that we healthy but
[38:14]
health is more than just test scores you
[38:15]
know those types of things and if we do
[38:17]
have some gaps tended to test scores we
[38:19]
realize that we will work out of that
[38:20]
too but that being said we know there's
[38:23]
other majors and at the end of the day I
[38:25]
wouldn't care as much about test scores
[38:27]
if I know how a kids doing one five and
[38:29]
ten years after high school and that's
[38:31]
we're actually gonna go after that
[38:32]
pretty hard to figure that out and as
[38:34]
well and I know a lot of topic of this
[38:36]
conversation but but that means said -
[38:38]
we do know that you know that that type
[38:43]
of learning is really
[38:49]
well I'm sure it's really off topic in
[38:52]
the fact that kind of a post together
[38:54]
with what I improve those just worse we
[38:56]
need to have facilities that are viable
[39:00]
for the learning that kids need to have
[39:03]
so then we call them out comes with one
[39:04]
improve outcomes now my test scores but
[39:07]
just the quality of life and maybe we
[39:09]
want to make facilities that help
[39:11]
nurture and grow that we may want to
[39:14]
make them employable
[39:15]
all right gets collaboration is what
[39:17]
have that top things for high test
[39:20]
scores are just one measure how
[39:22]
successful we are imitation well I
[39:27]
remember you know kids have chest aches
[39:29]
I'd be like crazy anymore that was a
[39:31]
long way adults Tolu depression did you
[39:34]
know all of that right Jim I can't
[39:37]
believe how many accommodation letters
[39:40]
that I have to write well we know you
[39:42]
think about that I don't know the single
[39:44]
employer town on the resume or
[39:46]
application is going to ask you for your
[39:47]
standardized test scores at school right
[39:49]
and that's why we come back to we're
[39:51]
still new that's worth these essential
[39:52]
competencies you know communication
[39:54]
empathy critical thinking the learners
[39:58]
mindset those types of things those are
[39:59]
the things are plurally cuss words
[40:02]
letting into that as well and our
[40:05]
facilities you know allowing for those essential competencies you know as
[40:10]
we think about that you know and where
[40:14]
that goes so ya know it's all tied
[40:16]
together for sure but that's why as a
[40:18]
community we're figuring out what are
[40:19]
the metrics that matter most our
[40:21]
community on our school are healthy and
[40:23]
we'll major success by that that she
[40:27]
that he said we should have a one-page
[40:29]
handout when people cut some of the
[40:32]
things that like Jerry Mitchell talked
[40:34]
about that I was totally not aware of I
[40:38]
think definitely should be included they
[40:41]
might not see ya yeah Jerry you want to
[40:48]
talk about talk about one of the biggest
[40:49]
needs you know in your of your mind
[40:51]
especially just for the millions and
[40:52]
nuts and bolts
[40:53]
well biggest needs of course is HVAC all
[40:56]
the air handlers on the north end of the
[40:58]
building are all in the growth five out
[41:00]
of six or operating one week to skip
[41:03]
parts out of air conditioning finally
[41:06]
got running in the library and stuff
[41:08]
towards the end of the summer of it
[41:09]
hopefully starts back up this next
[41:11]
summer
[41:13]
gotta your handlers in the 600 500
[41:15]
circle everything is you know near an
[41:18]
end alike so there's a lot of big
[41:20]
decisions to me you know if we can pass
[41:23]
a bond and hopefully go to a geothermal
[41:26]
system or or if we stay with a pack or
[41:28]
whatever we do were great if we don't go
[41:32]
to that and of course we're gonna have a
[41:34]
lot of HVAC electricals needs and things
[41:38]
that need to be done also got a lot of
[41:42]
underground conduit with electrical
[41:44]
that's starting to collapse we've had
[41:47]
runs just a surface mount electrical
[41:49]
link some of the classrooms operable
[41:51]
certain heavy 600 struggle right now
[41:55]
we've had it in the gym for a while a
[41:58]
lot of the outlets underneath the stage
[42:01]
that's there are not impossible anymore
[42:04]
and we're getting more and more
[42:07]
now 34 classrooms go down and that's
[42:10]
because one claps can't do it then it
[42:11]
pops breakers try to trace it you can't
[42:14]
pull the water back out because it can't
[42:15]
do its collapse so those are the issues
[42:18]
were running into I guess those are the
[42:21]
biggest needs so anyway I don't mind we
[42:24]
got we do have a session that we do an
[42:27]
annual asbestos update all their floor
[42:30]
tile and anything that's a 9x9 floor
[42:34]
tile and you walk around there's always
[42:35]
best system some of the the ceilings in
[42:40]
the circles are asbestos so you're
[42:42]
talking to health well-being and you see
[42:45]
that some of the tiles starting to break
[42:47]
up and we got to staff they're certified
[42:49]
so we can do a certain amount of area
[42:51]
that gets very big that we have to hire
[42:52]
it down but things like talk about you
[42:55]
know your security expert I know you
[42:57]
have your certifications that's what's
[42:58]
your what your take on security in terms
[43:01]
of the facility be brutally honest yeah
[43:05]
it's for me all right I could go in that
[43:08]
building
[43:09]
any place if I wanted to say I wanted to
[43:11]
dress up in me and when I worked
[43:13]
healthcare I got certified sent out to
[43:15]
the Michigan to be certified to do
[43:17]
things like that and you could get into
[43:20]
that building many many ways and just go
[43:23]
on a rampage if you wanted to windows
[43:26]
being open because of the heat spring
[43:28]
fall doors there proper doors open it
[43:33]
stylish operators because you know the
[43:36]
environment our main entrance yeah we
[43:40]
got the vestibule where you come in out
[43:41]
of the weather to do it but you see the
[43:44]
distance from the front entrance to
[43:46]
where the front receptionist sit once
[43:49]
you bust them in there's no guarantee
[43:51]
they're going to come to the that window
[43:53]
they could just go right in the building
[43:54]
and that's the same way in all three of
[43:56]
the buildings we're talking about high
[43:58]
school Lincoln and Washington middle
[44:01]
school has a pic as a good sign except
[44:03]
you can come into that vestibule you
[44:05]
buzz them into the office then you can
[44:07]
talk in the office before you go out
[44:08]
into the learning areas so yes security fix is not good there could be
[44:16]
many things and you know Jerry hit out a
[44:18]
little bit too there's there's certain
[44:21]
classrooms in the in the circles and the
[44:23]
reason why you could have so many feet
[44:25]
between emergency exits the only way you
[44:28]
can do that in a circle you got to have
[44:30]
an emergency exit through a classroom so
[44:33]
one of them that's a big one is where
[44:37]
the I guess what's the proper word for
[44:41]
where we cook and everything else
[44:43]
family consumer so there we go family
[44:45]
consumer science I already I go back
[44:47]
component that was in school so that
[44:49]
sort of eat just been right there a
[44:51]
family consumer science there's an
[44:53]
emergency exit in that room
[44:57]
thing they cook they have food in there
[44:59]
and all that that door to hallway has to
[45:01]
stay online 24/7 because you have to
[45:04]
have an emergency exit through that room
[45:06]
to go outside if there was a fire at the
[45:08]
interests that are that circle you have
[45:11]
to be able to get out those other exits
[45:13]
so that's what those exits are for we
[45:15]
have to have some feet between exits
[45:17]
same thing as fire extinguisher and
[45:19]
stuff like that and I also hear about
[45:21]
security and safety and the circles you
[45:23]
know didn't think much of it when I went
[45:26]
to school there
[45:27]
but now when you're walking around it
[45:28]
you can see what 10 feet in front of you know you're not sure what's
[45:32]
happening yeah there's there's many
[45:42]
things it's definitely a building that's
[45:44]
and served its purpose but it's also
[45:47]
time that we need to do some things or
[45:50]
do some of these to it we know how many
[45:53]
times would you say yours best friends
[45:55]
you know trying to track down pop
[45:58]
breakers scavenge parts from other air
[46:01]
handlers to fix one to make it work on the air-conditioning to get it
[46:05]
going you know do routine maintenance
[46:08]
that everything's renewer you could
[46:10]
focus on other things let's put this way
[46:12]
a brandy cakes we hired year and a half
[46:14]
ago he said our HVAC specialist way and
[46:17]
if we didn't have him I could say we'd
[46:20]
probably be in more trouble it was a
[46:21]
great hire the guy's a brain at this um
[46:24]
he spends probably 90% of his time
[46:27]
between the high school and sometimes up
[46:31]
Washington more more just to try to keep
[46:33]
those operating very little time in the
[46:36]
middle school we shouldn't spend a lot
[46:38]
of time we need to go or just ignore but
[46:40]
still it's pushing that four to five
[46:42]
year mark where you're going to have
[46:44]
things but they're the things that
[46:46]
happen there everything tells you right
[46:48]
away what's wrong with it you don't have
[46:50]
to go search for it breakers are on work
[46:52]
in the high school we've had an ADD
[46:55]
breakers and had electrical outlets and
[46:58]
switches for lights you've got so many
[47:01]
added devices that also million that
[47:05]
sort of track and it just even find it
[47:07]
so over the years that of course happens
[47:09]
we just had to do I forgot about this -
[47:12]
we just had this play a little over
[47:13]
10,000 down in the shop there because of
[47:16]
an old breaker panel going down so we
[47:19]
had to redo an ad for a new breaker
[47:21]
panel
[47:22]
typing overhead because there's no fix
[47:25]
yet so you know those are the things are
[47:27]
starting to happen 10,000 here doesn't
[47:29]
sound like maybe that's not a lot you do
[47:31]
10,000 in that project a month later he
[47:34]
might do it 10,000 and another project
[47:36]
over the years that adds up so brandon
[47:40]
spends a lot of time in fact he texted
[47:43]
me about three times already just in
[47:44]
this because we're having a couple of
[47:46]
issues that he's working on right now
[47:47]
he's constantly just working on issues
[47:51]
instead of doing the PM's that we should
[47:53]
do what you prevented maintenance and
[47:54]
we're being on preventative maintenance
[47:56]
program better but you know when you're
[47:58]
spending your whole time preparing
[48:00]
instead of doing that they're not being
[48:02]
proactive or being reactive I don't want
[48:04]
to let it be proactive how about is
[48:07]
there a pretty frequent occurrence for
[48:09]
you to tell you know teachers day well
[48:13]
I'm sorry but this outlet or this way or
[48:15]
this area isn't available for you
[48:17]
because we can't we're working on
[48:19]
tracking it down you know
[48:20]
you maybe take a week or four days to
[48:22]
figure out what issues before you can
[48:24]
bring it back for them to us yeah that's
[48:26]
got to be quite often other things that
[48:28]
happen and this one was in the 600
[48:31]
circle about a year ago with a
[48:33]
condensate line come apart in a crawl
[48:37]
space says probably about twice as wide
[48:39]
as this table and it's about three foot
[48:42]
tall Britain's laying on his back on a
[48:45]
creeper that you know usually used for
[48:47]
many vehicles and stuff and pushing this
[48:50]
way probably about 300 feet to get back
[48:52]
in there so we're hanging down on the
[48:54]
tools and parts doing an event that's
[48:57]
about six inches wide by about two foot
[48:59]
longer so he's laying on the back down
[49:01]
in there so also what is that is a
[49:03]
confined space so you've got a lot of
[49:05]
other things to do so to fix that
[49:07]
project we have that area down for about
[49:09]
a week week and a half and that's right
[49:12]
in the middle of a classroom setting so
[49:14]
those things are starting to happen more
[49:16]
and more and help me discover that all
[49:17]
some steam just starts rolling into that classroom and goes out into the
[49:23]
circle so that's how you discovered
[49:25]
because you have no other way to know
[49:27]
that that's gonna happen so and that's
[49:29]
something that you don't play on a
[49:31]
creeper and go all the way around the
[49:32]
insides of those circles on a regular
[49:34]
basis just even see what the equipment
[49:35]
looks like when you talk about getting
[49:37]
parts the new scheme lines in a circle
[49:39]
you need something like a 17 degree
[49:42]
angle it will steam under what you have
[49:45]
90 degree or 35 degree angles and all
[49:47]
sudden we're having to have custom parts
[49:49]
made and this isn't challenging and
[49:51]
that's that's what made that project
[49:52]
take so long we actually thought we had
[49:54]
fix one time we order some parts online
[49:57]
through Grainger even bind them and it
[50:00]
has to have a flexible fitting well you
[50:03]
kind of circle in about every five feet
[50:06]
is trying to turn and all that of course
[50:08]
when you make it or handle it all along
[50:10]
as you're putting it in on a circle with
[50:13]
if you're trying to fix it
[50:14]
it'll make those bends for you that need
[50:16]
to be the exact degrees that we mean so
[50:19]
fixed it once it wasn't ten minutes and
[50:22]
it's back apart the rumors filling back
[50:23]
up again we start all over so yeah
[50:26]
that's the same thing with them okay
[50:28]
thanks for that no not for a low
[50:33]
pressure steam line they would notice
[50:36]
this in Iowa but I've heard stories you
[50:38]
know Brian is your top story to hear
[50:39]
from some people in the back I'm circle
[50:41]
to the bellman it was kind of new cool
[50:43]
thing people came and visited and saw
[50:45]
that and in every school like all this
[50:47]
so neat which'll notices nobody else
[50:50]
built them I can't find another set of
[50:52]
circles in Iowa that never built and I
[50:55]
think that just shows the limitations
[50:56]
that they have you know that's that's
[50:58]
the struggle we would have you wud right
[51:00]
circle order yet to start fresh with the
[51:04]
circles you know and I think that's part
[51:06]
of the challenge but is he's kind of
[51:07]
sharing you know the safety security
[51:08]
issues on top of that but then just that
[51:11]
constant maintain your life you have you
[51:13]
talked to architects and we talked to
[51:15]
Estes just big very because when you
[51:17]
have to cut classrooms into pies the
[51:20]
ineffective use of square footage you
[51:22]
know if you if you look at if you were
[51:25]
to look at our square footage per
[51:26]
student versus some other school in this
[51:28]
rings it's pretty high for the high
[51:29]
school but I don't think you asked a lot
[51:32]
of our staff they would say it's all
[51:33]
about we feel like it's only two tons of
[51:35]
space you know to talk about the cloud
[51:37]
space it's because the space is being
[51:38]
utilized in February it's won a
[51:40]
challenge
[51:44]
I wonder Jerry's time I know he's super
[51:46]
busy you guys have anything also asked
[51:47]
you know just a couple quick things you
[51:49]
were just a little over six years so if
[51:55]
I take the other side of the coin that I
[51:58]
know will pop up why are we in such a
[52:07]
tough shape now why isn't the district
[52:09]
spend any money over the last 50 years
[52:11]
to maintain that darn build-up Jerry we
[52:15]
have because you know money absolutely
[52:17]
and we have been um you know you can't
[52:21]
get parts on equipment forever
[52:23]
eventually eventually those two parts
[52:26]
are obsolete you either have to retrofit
[52:28]
which we started doing in things like
[52:31]
that so the the sixth air handler that I
[52:35]
was talking about on the roof of of the
[52:37]
north end of the high school that one we
[52:41]
tap off of the other five to fill in
[52:44]
some areas so of course then instead of
[52:46]
buying or trying to retrofit parts and
[52:48]
when you retrofit it's not exactly the
[52:51]
same of course as everyone knows you're
[52:52]
trying to retrofit anything so then you
[52:54]
take parts off the one you can take down
[52:56]
and do it so in them it has been
[52:57]
maintained
[52:58]
I think there's been sort of processing
[53:01]
put in place to keep maintaining before
[53:03]
and after I've been here as you know
[53:07]
it's not going to last forever you're
[53:09]
not gonna be able to get the parts to
[53:10]
make them last forever so in part of
[53:14]
night
[53:15]
some of those types of questions the
[53:18]
district isn't unlike anybody or
[53:21]
anything else we have X amount of funny
[53:25]
weather no matter what Thunder comes
[53:28]
from have all of Local Option Sales Tax
[53:31]
etc etc we've spent almost all of our
[53:37]
money that we've received over the last
[53:39]
20-30 years with those funds on repairs
[53:44]
maintenance improvements additions to
[53:47]
Lincoln geothermal to Washington the new
[53:51]
dental school transportation center etc
[53:54]
but again had been talking about for 30
[53:57]
plus years where you work down to at
[53:59]
before we put the dual enough but
[54:03]
buildings are only only last X amount of
[54:09]
time you let your row replace it needs
[54:11]
to be replaced every so often
[54:14]
een needs to be replaced that
[54:19]
air-conditioning on top of the new
[54:22]
addition 270 addition make the north
[54:24]
the high school needs to be replaced and
[54:27]
that we've spent the district over the
[54:30]
years has spent everything on the loser
[54:34]
there hasn't been enough money to
[54:36]
completely can't buy new at the the high
[54:40]
school even the newer to replace the air
[54:43]
conditioning units of the north end of
[54:45]
the - great yeah
[54:48]
a perfect example of him Mike and Terry
[54:52]
and I met yesterday we're going out five
[54:54]
years so you've got to pick and choose
[54:56]
it because you're exactly right you
[54:58]
don't have unlimited funds that you can
[55:00]
just do everything all at once you've
[55:02]
got a pick each year and pick your
[55:04]
product if you're anybody to do an
[55:07]
example of when put them on top
[55:08]
mother-in-law's had a furnace in her
[55:10]
house for probably 20 years
[55:13]
she just had put Brandon furnace and air
[55:15]
conditioner because it's there so you
[55:18]
can't fix them anymore you know and
[55:20]
that's the point we do we've done what
[55:22]
we can on the equipment that we have in
[55:24]
the high school by maintaining it
[55:26]
upgrading and things like that the
[55:30]
middle school we can see everything of
[55:32]
the operations the middle school and
[55:34]
like I said earlier when something goes
[55:36]
down at the middle school we know
[55:38]
exactly where it's at what it is and all
[55:40]
that because of all the technology that
[55:43]
we have that we can track everything at
[55:45]
the high school and something goes down
[55:46]
there's not that technology there's
[55:48]
those upgrades to that point then you
[55:51]
have to go troubleshooting and and spend
[55:53]
a lot of time to find it so yeah so
[55:56]
there's there's a lot of a difference
[55:57]
that's going to be cleared even
[55:58]
internally our discussion has never been
[56:00]
around building a new high school it's
[56:02]
to renovate the car line right you know
[56:04]
and so because there's not a lot of
[56:06]
great things that happened the CP space
[56:07]
you've got a lot of great things have
[56:09]
happened you know for a lot walling for
[56:11]
example you know the 2012 board and
[56:14]
administration have the new science
[56:16]
wings and then into being a part of plan
[56:18]
would be to lay those let me touch their
[56:20]
great shape they're the Cadillac science
[56:22]
terms are beautiful the dilemma that
[56:25]
this board will face the communal faces
[56:27]
do you have eight circles you have the
[56:29]
nicest circles in Iowa you know and I'd
[56:33]
be curious with the communities just you
[56:34]
know as I go around and you might want
[56:37]
to what conversations which do you guys
[56:38]
know like over 150 of those now I'm not
[56:40]
heard anybody too sentimental about
[56:42]
circles you know because they realized
[56:44]
that just they come the end of life and
[56:46]
so because of that that's what makes
[56:48]
this renovation a possible renovation a
[56:49]
little more tricky is that would be city
[56:51]
construction - to replace that and hey
[56:53]
somebody had a board you know here's
[56:55]
going to sign out circles if they were
[56:56]
squares you'd be able easier to renovate
[56:58]
those types of things but I think you
[57:01]
know what I really credit you know
[57:02]
Jerry's you know office and his
[57:03]
apartment because they do a masterful
[57:05]
job there their idea preventive
[57:06]
maintenance things on the middle school
[57:07]
you know four or five years there's
[57:09]
already things that we're doing but keep
[57:10]
it good shape and keep it there and you
[57:13]
know but there's a place where things
[57:15]
just you know we can like you said you
[57:17]
like yeah and then my point too is the
[57:21]
end of life has come on a lot of stuff
[57:23]
up at the high school even if we don't
[57:27]
take the circles into account but that's
[57:29]
going to take more money to replace and
[57:35]
upgrade
[57:37]
than what we the district has access to
[57:40]
at the current point which is why we
[57:43]
talk about upon the Amish you how old
[57:46]
are the healing systems for them so
[57:50]
they're from the early nineteen sixties
[57:51]
correct so you know when we had our
[57:53]
assessment they put together a
[57:56]
construction cost to replace those for
[57:59]
the domestic pipe in which I assume this
[58:01]
part that steam it kind of talked about
[58:02]
like Franklin was underneath the circles
[58:05]
and then new HVAC system which has about
[58:08]
a a ten point three million dollar costs
[58:11]
associated with it what's your annual
[58:13]
maintenance operating budget
[58:26]
and Jerry spends all that no no what is it he gets about yes yes his
[58:41]
annual budget is like so he'd have to
[58:48]
save every dollar he was allocated for
[58:50]
more than ten years to be able to find
[58:53]
it to replace just those two items which
[58:55]
means no roofs or anything everywhere
[58:57]
God's good stuff not no painting and or
[59:01]
an electrical nothing else we're done
[59:03]
for ten years correct which is that
[59:05]
pretty significant amount or we could
[59:08]
borrow the money and nothing gets done
[59:09]
for 30
[59:10]
we're paying interest or for teachers so
[59:14]
I mean these are these are big expenses
[59:15]
that the district just doesn't have
[59:17]
operating capital to the rare
[59:19]
the only other you do is yeah and that's
[59:22]
one point yeah that that's why we're at
[59:24]
the point of potentially asking the
[59:29]
public well I ain't even flipped it to
[59:32]
you of that it's not that we don't take
[59:33]
care of stuff is that we you know we
[59:36]
really do I mean for example we're
[59:38]
putting in new football filled legs as
[59:40]
far as I can tell those are original to
[59:42]
tie the football field so going back to
[59:43]
I don't know I checked with Jeff says he
[59:45]
could probably tell us exactly but I'm
[59:47]
gonna assume probably at least the late
[59:48]
sixties early seventies there's nobody
[59:50]
able with polls and eight light
[59:51]
standards anymore and we have made those
[59:53]
work for all these years
[59:55]
don't need Kevin that's why I'm assuming
[59:58]
we've kept those in good repair we've
[1:00:00]
done that you know it's just now that
[1:00:02]
we're looking at going oh we should
[1:00:04]
replace us because we have some issues
[1:00:05]
with the pole being unsafe and then
[1:00:07]
quite honestly were throwing lamps all
[1:00:08]
the time so they've gotta go up on the
[1:00:10]
cabinet or casanova scissor lift to
[1:00:13]
replace them and then just you look at
[1:00:15]
your arm line cost/benefit right this is
[1:00:17]
not worth our time and effort to do that
[1:00:18]
but i would tell you a lot of districts
[1:00:21]
would replace those lights probably 20
[1:00:22]
years ago so I would credit our
[1:00:25]
community over a rise we were it's a
[1:00:29]
it's been approval you know over the
[1:00:31]
years the the boards here have been
[1:00:33]
through ville and have gotten the
[1:00:34]
money's worth I would credit you know
[1:00:36]
another place where we've been frugal is
[1:00:38]
we agent buses a lot
[1:00:42]
we'd your buses a lot longer than a lot
[1:00:44]
of districts because we invested the
[1:00:45]
money in hiring and outs and kanuk and
[1:00:47]
Carl our Kurt Kurt does I'm just this
[1:00:51]
kids giving me her does an amazing job
[1:00:53]
because we have some buses that we keep
[1:00:56]
in good repair and we passed a state
[1:00:58]
trooper inspection with the de here with
[1:00:59]
flying colors with Boston Center
[1:01:01]
sometimes pushing 20 years old we get
[1:01:03]
our money's worth because we invested in
[1:01:05]
preventive maintenance
[1:01:06]
the right things I take a lot of pride
[1:01:08]
in our staff really underlings are clear
[1:01:10]
men doing the right thing so Jerry
[1:01:16]
what's so life expectancy you that mean
[1:01:19]
what's most appropriate of the new
[1:01:23]
middle school what's its life expectancy
[1:01:25]
for a tracking system just in general we
[1:01:29]
get stuck to major pairs
[1:01:31]
you know I the building in general I
[1:01:36]
guess I'm not sure how you come up with
[1:01:38]
really what if you preventive
[1:01:41]
maintenance do all your peons and try
[1:01:42]
keep everything up and running there's
[1:01:44]
no reason we shouldn't have dirty that
[1:01:45]
are plushy or some on everything that's
[1:01:48]
the main workings of that facility you
[1:01:51]
know you're gonna definitely have a lot
[1:01:53]
of general upkeep for it and when you
[1:01:56]
have a lot of windows and things like
[1:01:58]
that
[1:01:58]
there's probably increased upkeep just
[1:02:01]
because of seven there's no reason that
[1:02:07]
facility can get away without having
[1:02:10]
some major things done to it for 30
[1:02:12]
years
[1:02:17]
I know this might not be like a security
[1:02:19]
issue but like I know it's something
[1:02:21]
that like there's just something so
[1:02:23]
simple I just like the intercoms not
[1:02:24]
working but like we can't even like the
[1:02:27]
office can't convey a message did like
[1:02:29]
the teachers and then hope like hope
[1:02:32]
does not but like if we made your
[1:02:33]
message was needed to be like announced
[1:02:36]
it week it's muffled like I don't know
[1:02:39]
if it's like the speakers or wider or
[1:02:41]
that's the you know still on was like
[1:02:43]
that we run into so for example what
[1:02:46]
things I hate one of my pet peeves is
[1:02:48]
steel bells I think it just tastes like
[1:02:50]
the Ferris Bueller's Day Off you know
[1:02:51]
there's no reasonably the 2000 that we
[1:02:53]
can you know have a like Tron of bells
[1:02:55]
which we do it all of our campuses
[1:02:57]
except for high school and our high
[1:02:59]
school is so old that it still has
[1:03:00]
clocks at literally bugs right and
[1:03:03]
that's the Bell which is this wow that's really there's still Bell Barrett
[1:03:06]
we're in the middle school boys high
[1:03:08]
school and we can't take that out
[1:03:10]
because it's only belts down there now
[1:03:13]
the problem is an engineer you can talk
[1:03:15]
more about that stress to put into the
[1:03:16]
whole system and we have struggling in
[1:03:18]
asbestos and you want to start going to
[1:03:20]
ceiling its and doing some of the things
[1:03:21]
and then you know some of those repairs
[1:03:23]
that they see it like a simple thing is
[1:03:25]
way more complex I getting out it's to
[1:03:27]
the attorney but you want to speak to
[1:03:29]
that just like the high cost of some of
[1:03:30]
those things that are just we don't
[1:03:32]
realize right because you know speaker
[1:03:35]
so we're doing a bail system in one in
[1:03:37]
Washington Lincoln that's all through
[1:03:39]
computer controlled and everything so
[1:03:41]
it's more like what Mike's talking about
[1:03:43]
modernizing it to do that at the high
[1:03:45]
school at the Washington Lincoln let's
[1:03:47]
back up with Washington Lincoln it's
[1:03:49]
pretty easy to do because of
[1:03:51]
the way their high school the speakers
[1:03:55]
are all wearing out so to do that
[1:03:56]
project there then you are gonna pull a
[1:03:59]
new wire everywhere in your home what
[1:04:00]
didn't I like so it's not just uh ten to fifteen thousand dollar project
[1:04:06]
it's probably push more like a fifty
[1:04:08]
sixty thousand pilot project to do all
[1:04:10]
those workings inner workings of it so
[1:04:12]
things like that multiply when you have
[1:04:15]
quite a bit of asbestos in the ceiling
[1:04:18]
and the circles have all of that if you
[1:04:20]
want in this in this circles look at the
[1:04:23]
ceilings it's all that really looks like
[1:04:24]
spackling the stuff that's a spring on
[1:04:27]
this bestest back from the sixteen so if
[1:04:29]
you want to put it like new lighting you know they be lightly because because
[1:04:38]
of that anytime even even Seward
[1:05:08]
remember blinds column with all the
[1:05:10]
pathogen bath the north bathrooms which
[1:05:13]
are we call the north bathrooms that are
[1:05:15]
just to the north of the five hundred
[1:05:17]
circle we had those two bathrooms shut
[1:05:19]
down last last week for probably almost
[1:05:22]
the entire week we had backup and stuff
[1:05:26]
coming in those bathrooms and worked and worked on trying to get them
[1:05:30]
out and finally called in
[1:05:33]
exterior contractor he came in and
[1:05:35]
worked and worked worked and we find out
[1:05:37]
that was working and not for any student
[1:05:39]
misbehavior like when something got
[1:05:40]
flushed out just normal wear and tear
[1:05:42]
and usage and just it just catches up
[1:05:44]
you know just think they clog after a
[1:05:46]
while in the thing did you say well that
[1:05:49]
happens anywhere the reason that is
[1:05:52]
lying turn is because what they what
[1:05:55]
they do now so and there were the old
[1:05:57]
cast lines and everything else they're
[1:05:59]
not PVC and larger and everything else
[1:06:01]
for a larger facility so thank you for
[1:06:04]
built different 60s than they are now
[1:06:07]
and they can crack in a row we do have
[1:06:10]
that literally yeah there's always a
[1:06:13]
concern we've already added a tank out
[1:06:16]
in that in the lawn from we did that
[1:06:19]
about a half ago because of the way the
[1:06:22]
clay traps were designed in the art art
[1:06:24]
area we kind of constantly had clay
[1:06:27]
clogging up the drains so we'd have two
[1:06:29]
issues on the far north in finally ended
[1:06:31]
up with a fifteen thousand dollar
[1:06:33]
project about two years ago put a put a
[1:06:36]
receptor trap out in the lawn was a big
[1:06:39]
tank that we can pump out on a regular
[1:06:41]
basis things like that even that wasn't
[1:06:43]
made for what we use for art now we're
[1:06:47]
ahead to retrofit it it's better not
[1:06:49]
perfect but it's better
[1:06:58]
kind of questions for Gerry
[1:07:06]
for anybody else
[1:07:10]
it was you're here in the community
[1:07:18]
experiencing I'm hearing right now yes
[1:07:21]
the between they would like to see
[1:07:30]
facility planning a play about what what
[1:07:34]
should happen with ice boner I think
[1:07:37]
we're to the point now we we need to
[1:07:42]
buckle down as or in the senior
[1:07:44]
leadership and start to tell the story
[1:07:46]
everything that Jerry has said of the
[1:07:50]
safety concerns and saying this this is an authority we
[1:07:58]
from the conversations today I think
[1:08:01]
it's clear that we we have needs that we
[1:08:06]
can't fix with the funding that we have
[1:08:11]
and it's not because of we have we have
[1:08:18]
diligently it is not the school that my
[1:08:25]
parents grew up
[1:08:27]
and so
[1:08:29]
they think that's an that's an important
[1:08:31]
message to to also convey
[1:08:35]
the jobs that we're asking our students
[1:08:38]
to do today are not the students
[1:08:42]
are not the jobs that we ask students to
[1:08:44]
do 50 years ago and so those messages
[1:08:49]
need to come out I think it's time to
[1:08:52]
say we're gonna start telling that story
[1:08:57]
and see there's community support or to
[1:09:02]
raise a community awareness which
[1:09:06]
so is it appropriate at this time to
[1:09:10]
like Justin would you be the one that
[1:09:14]
worked on this one-page back sheet well
[1:09:16]
honestly it will put multiple people so
[1:09:22]
is it can we say Justin go ahead and do
[1:09:27]
that well okay I'm just as fossil yeah
[1:09:32]
well we can do whether the direction
[1:09:35]
could be is if you please the board in
[1:09:38]
the January meeting we can do actually
[1:09:40]
today into action on in here
[1:09:41]
but it please Lord I put a
[1:09:43]
recommendation out that we initiate a
[1:09:46]
communication plan on to the community
[1:09:49]
and also and I'm we've been working on
[1:09:52]
skeleton of one that I get out to you
[1:09:54]
guys for review and for the community
[1:09:55]
that we'd say you know you're going to
[1:09:57]
town hall meetings let's let's open a
[1:09:59]
community-wide dialogue a discussion
[1:10:00]
where we feed the needs are getting
[1:10:02]
tours lined up getting information
[1:10:04]
campaign when people are in doubt
[1:10:07]
they're going you know they other
[1:10:09]
questions answer and get that feedback
[1:10:12]
and answer questions that come up and
[1:10:14]
engage your parents and do those types
[1:10:16]
of things and we can do it really a nice
[1:10:18]
aggressive I the wrong work but you know
[1:10:21]
mortgage trip campaign again I'll
[1:10:23]
reiterate we want to keep the focus on
[1:10:24]
teaching learning focus on teaching
[1:10:26]
learning but this is in the background
[1:10:27]
going on at the same time and my
[1:10:29]
recommendation would be sometime in may
[1:10:30]
run the survey again see where we're at
[1:10:32]
that can inform our next steps of where
[1:10:34]
we're going what we need to do there
[1:10:36]
there's no doubt we need to do something
[1:10:38]
but we also know that we're all in this
[1:10:41]
together the communities kind of
[1:10:42]
supportive of what we need to do and it
[1:10:43]
is a big investment but I also and I
[1:10:47]
think this is a big piece for us too
[1:10:50]
if we decide to go in this direction and
[1:10:52]
wait and figure out the next steps I
[1:10:54]
think that's really nice
[1:10:56]
no one has listened to the community of
[1:10:59]
the survey and be responsive to that you
[1:11:02]
know the survey comes out we just
[1:11:03]
decided to do something else you know I
[1:11:05]
think there's there's a key talking
[1:11:07]
point like hey community we hurt it
[1:11:08]
you're not informed you're not ready we
[1:11:10]
need to do a better job of that and get
[1:11:11]
that information out and you know there
[1:11:14]
are some some tax questions in the
[1:11:16]
community and we're gonna take some more
[1:11:19]
time and and answer those questions and
[1:11:21]
listen to you and I think that's a huge
[1:11:23]
David horse I'd like to suggest maybe we
[1:11:28]
have a couple of more board meetings in
[1:11:32]
the high school in the next six months
[1:11:35]
or so maybe even short tours if we need
[1:11:42]
additional depending upon the length of
[1:11:46]
time that meanings end up going if we
[1:11:50]
think that our board meetings are
[1:11:52]
getting too long in the next six months
[1:11:56]
with everything else we're doing maybe
[1:12:00]
have the third Monday of the month as a
[1:12:02]
workshop at 6:30 6:15 and just have it
[1:12:07]
devoted to high school on communication
[1:12:13]
whatever so that we can focus on this
[1:12:18]
one topic we did that a lot in 2014
[1:12:22]
we're dealing with the school project
[1:12:25]
going forward I think for four months
[1:12:29]
we've had every Monday night for four
[1:12:32]
months the the regular meetings were
[1:12:36]
regular business on the second fourth
[1:12:39]
Monday and the first and the third were
[1:12:41]
only on moving the middle school project
[1:12:45]
forward so that you can stay focused on
[1:12:48]
that one topic for a meeting so I'd just
[1:12:51]
bring that up as a reminder we did that
[1:12:53]
before maybe we need to look at that in
[1:12:56]
the future again and I'm not I don't
[1:12:58]
think we're to the point where we need
[1:13:00]
every need to meet every Monday night
[1:13:01]
but if we want to spend an hour on this
[1:13:04]
topic once a month maybe it could mean
[1:13:08]
the third Monday and we just lined up
[1:13:11]
the high school people and do short
[1:13:14]
tours or something it's just a
[1:13:17]
suggestion another way to look at us
[1:13:21]
handling and dealing with it given the
[1:13:24]
public awareness out do we have to meet
[1:13:29]
could it be a Saturday morning could be
[1:13:31]
70 parties yeah another time preferably
[1:13:46]
not very many more things just because
[1:13:55]
take away another night from you know
[1:13:58]
being a family whatever i i i person's
[1:14:03]
that's just well I might to not
[1:14:26]
automatically this but a work session
[1:14:28]
you know it's on your core you can
[1:14:30]
proceed self-confidence come up you can
[1:14:32]
still do that discussion especially a
[1:14:34]
discussion is maybe those those were
[1:14:36]
sessions because the tape on tours in
[1:14:37]
high school to engage the community I'll
[1:14:40]
tell you one thing we'll need to is help
[1:14:42]
from the board as well engaging you know
[1:14:43]
we we think between now and probably
[1:14:46]
maybe we need to do probably 20
[1:14:47]
different community meetings and I'm not
[1:14:49]
saying like being informal town all time
[1:14:51]
say the idea get the Dave's in the
[1:14:53]
conical you know having people and and
[1:14:55]
while that's powerful for me to do that
[1:14:57]
I'll do a lot of those it's a powerful
[1:14:58]
for board members for students and I'll
[1:15:00]
tell you as I go I'm gonna take students
[1:15:01]
with me we don't do because our focus on
[1:15:03]
student leadership we don't want any
[1:15:04]
we're about students because they it's
[1:15:06]
their school we serve them they're our
[1:15:08]
primary customer but what we'll need
[1:15:10]
help with back to and we're telling the
[1:15:12]
staff to you know make this the dialogue
[1:15:14]
is you're sitting around the dinner
[1:15:16]
table you talk about you know or you're
[1:15:17]
talking with people your questions
[1:15:19]
answer those questions and you know get
[1:15:21]
needs to be just a we call see wat see
[1:15:23]
MOT consistent message over time this
[1:15:26]
needs to be a dialogue in the community
[1:15:28]
so we can get more feedback where people
[1:15:29]
thinking are they sensing or they see it
[1:15:31]
when they carry to be more responsive to
[1:15:33]
it those surveys one step you know and
[1:15:36]
now or the next level of getting more
[1:15:37]
deeply feedback to actually invite some
[1:15:44]
of our local clubs and organizations to
[1:15:48]
a meet send the president a letter and
[1:15:52]
say
[1:15:55]
whatever chapter we really like you to
[1:15:58]
come to this meeting
[1:15:59]
well we thought about - inviting some of
[1:16:02]
those lunch groups to have lunch up at
[1:16:04]
the high school you know we'll take out
[1:16:06]
to work it will be just a good comment
[1:16:10]
on that fan mail or something like that
[1:16:11]
and you know invite rotary of my why is
[1:16:14]
that become beating at our high school
[1:16:16]
you know those types of things are
[1:16:18]
powerful messages again we're not trying
[1:16:21]
to sell people on something at this
[1:16:22]
point we're really just trying to make
[1:16:23]
them informed and combined with the
[1:16:27]
chance to do this because because
[1:16:31]
ultimately it's not this bond that makes
[1:16:35]
the decision on it if we move forward
[1:16:36]
our high schools the community and right
[1:16:38]
all we're doing we asked the question
[1:16:41]
but part of our job to ask that question
[1:16:43]
is also make sure that people have the
[1:16:44]
right information answer your questions
[1:16:46]
and just being open invitation about
[1:16:47]
them
[1:16:47]
what I think I responsibilities to
[1:16:49]
communicate what the gates out or how
[1:16:50]
people understand how we're gonna go
[1:16:52]
about that what we're going to do
[1:16:55]
support us given that clarity how can I
[1:16:58]
put every what our plan is you know the
[1:16:59]
leadership I'm going to have this is
[1:17:01]
what going forward would you support it
[1:17:06]
and I think we talked about in our
[1:17:08]
communications committee meeting having
[1:17:10]
our board meetings
[1:17:18]
super stack drop it throughout what
[1:17:21]
people see going forward and a guy had
[1:17:25]
made the comment they you know
[1:17:27]
unfortunately a lot of public to come
[1:17:29]
but maybe you're going to once this
[1:17:32]
people will start from high school or
[1:17:47]
even even our work sessions I don't know
[1:17:49]
if there's if you had met someone in the
[1:17:51]
morning would be proud I don't know
[1:17:52]
where we couldn't have yeah someone make
[1:18:01]
sure you get a lot of the people
[1:18:04]
involved not just
[1:18:06]
right maybe that's not a problem but it
[1:18:09]
sometimes it is to me to engage oh
[1:18:14]
thanks have question I didn't get an
[1:18:18]
answer
[1:18:20]
I think that's a great idea I think we
[1:18:22]
should start out I want to make that
[1:18:27]
happen
[1:18:29]
we'll do in the library I think Jerry
[1:18:32]
said feedback works there what I'm
[1:18:39]
hearing is you guys would love to see
[1:18:41]
plans moving forward from the
[1:18:43]
administration leadership on
[1:18:45]
communication and engagement and those
[1:18:47]
different things and so you combine
[1:18:52]
words including tours and then it's a
[1:18:55]
lot would happen is I'll put a plan
[1:18:56]
together they haven't reviewed with a
[1:18:59]
committee at some point as well tall
[1:19:00]
view and then in a first January meeting
[1:19:02]
my recommendation would be to the board
[1:19:05]
to direct means to initiate in
[1:19:06]
communication with mr. Fisher just so
[1:19:09]
making sure that that point is a whole
[1:19:11]
plan to talk about how we're gonna do
[1:19:14]
the days of 104 and what we're going to
[1:19:17]
do
[1:19:18]
if you're successful in moving this
[1:19:19]
project forward our continued our
[1:19:22]
teaching and learning facilities put
[1:19:25]
people all of those things I mean a big
[1:19:28]
part of the plan that's just
[1:19:29]
specifically renovations yeah yeah the
[1:19:31]
security we want you know make sure it's
[1:19:37]
comprehensive and I'm confident you can
[1:19:38]
do that absolutely well and right right
[1:19:42]
no surprises well I'll tell you is that
[1:19:43]
not playing a lot of lot of input from
[1:19:45]
you folks I see a long footwear me to
[1:19:47]
give me important feedback we'll get
[1:19:49]
through community and good leadership as
[1:19:51]
well and it'll be able to be breathing
[1:19:52]
thing you know as we go into town hall
[1:19:54]
meeting we get input and feedback you
[1:19:56]
know they may just some of the things I
[1:19:57]
would use time so no I haven't rarely
[1:19:59]
the smartest guy who knows all Leon you
[1:20:01]
guys to sometimes be looking for a draft
[1:20:14]
of that you know or email my update and
[1:20:17]
give me some feedback and input and
[1:20:19]
we'll get some feedback from our
[1:20:20]
leadership from our staff from our
[1:20:22]
students on that communication plan and
[1:20:24]
community as well I have one of my white
[1:20:30]
work that I can't
[1:20:30]
my wife works I gotta get into it yeah
[1:20:34]
these pictures all you want to be my
[1:20:36]
chicken scribblers well you have any
[1:20:40]
[Music]
[1:20:44]
well I just wanted to say thanks to mr.
[1:20:47]
Fisher Mike and Justin for their work
[1:20:49]
I'm putting that communication together
[1:20:51]
they talked about it every time
[1:20:54]
Communications I really appreciate them
[1:21:01]
hissing it's not going to take much to
[1:21:04]
really finalize you've got certain
[1:21:08]
crafts here here's my cavities I was
[1:21:11]
gonna have free this morning but got
[1:21:12]
kicked my butt of the sinus infection
[1:21:14]
I'm just a little high I got here attack
[1:21:16]
that because I really do I Jerry mother
[1:21:18]
helped us with it and as did any of
[1:21:21]
Justin and so we're taking the best from
[1:21:22]
people I'm going to read past some super
[1:21:25]
tender threads that are doing this work
[1:21:27]
as well and if they're so I'd say the
[1:21:30]
next couple days you'll see if you got
[1:21:31]
draft for me but again don't it's not
[1:21:33]
the Word of God I have to be back in put
[1:21:35]
it on the plate you're seeing sensing so
[1:21:37]
that by the time we get before being at
[1:21:39]
a credible plan to get community
[1:21:41]
everything so living breathable absolute
[1:21:47]
government well the end target hopefully
[1:21:50]
is the same but how we get there always
[1:21:54]
very well adjustments on yeah yeah
[1:21:57]
[Music]
[1:22:03]
oh yeah I just know see some press
[1:23:15]
coming out in Mason City is asking to
[1:23:17]
join the NAIC so I have super-predator
[1:23:19]
meeting today right now my position on
[1:23:21]
that I mean ask them thank you guys
[1:23:23]
there's a consideration really talented
[1:23:26]
Bryan as a senior leadership want
[1:23:28]
puddling for the recommendation they
[1:23:29]
have this is so new
[1:23:31]
no basis either it's something on the
[1:23:34]
back for several years so also you'll be
[1:23:37]
seeing we had a nice conversation with
[1:23:39]
press about our high scores in the state
[1:23:41]
test I'm getting sourced to you where
[1:23:43]
we're struggling with it's a new test
[1:23:45]
this year and they had a dashboard where
[1:23:47]
we pulled it down a bit of a mess
[1:23:49]
and so we're having a hand calculate a
[1:23:51]
lot of the scores on a spreadsheet we're
[1:23:53]
actually engaging with a new company
[1:23:55]
called performance matters and it's our
[1:23:56]
own in-house data warehouse we're using
[1:23:58]
but it's taking them tied because they
[1:24:00]
had to do the scores from the state that
[1:24:02]
dumped into our auditor warehouse and
[1:24:03]
then we're going to training tomorrow on
[1:24:05]
how to use that that were asked a lot of
[1:24:07]
presentation for you guys as a board to
[1:24:09]
later on as well but I wanted you know
[1:24:11]
right pull the source that I just want
[1:24:13]
to happen tonight if I need you I can
[1:24:15]
give to you right now that would make
[1:24:16]
sense it's a packet of information I
[1:24:18]
want to get into digestible chunks that
[1:24:19]
make sense to you guys so we'll be
[1:24:21]
hopefully get that to you soon so we're
[1:24:22]
close from last train doesn't ask for
[1:24:25]
that but right now the way this
[1:24:27]
typically they're not reading it so
[1:24:29]
we're trying to be good like an
[1:24:31]
executive summary that you guys so
[1:24:33]
that's it
